NOTES FROM FATHER TOM T he other week I had the privilege of blessing a moth- er soon after childbirth using the old, Extraordinary Form, of “Blessing of a Mother After Childbirth” also known as “the Churching of Women.” This was a blessing I have been looking at in the old Roman Ritual (1962) but did not quite understand. It is a blessing for a mother after she returns for the first time to Church, but the Rite seems to presume the baby is already baptized! Talking to some older priests, who remember how this was carried out in the past, I found that back in the day the baby would have been baptized soon after birth (to make sure it received the grace of salvation as soon as possible) but the mother stayed behind at home to recuperate from the childbirth and (perhaps) to prepare the food for the Baptism party! So when the mother did finally make it back to Mass, the Church would welcome her with a special blessing on her mother- hood and a thanksgiving for a safe delivery of her baby. At least, that was the intention of the old rite, but unfortunately it often got a bad reputation in the 60’s by some who unfairly equated it to the ‘purification’ of women after childbirth in the Jewish faith. I invited one of our new mothers to receive the “Churching of Women” after her first Mass back from childbirth. In the Rite, the pastor meets the moth- er, who holds a lit candle, in the back of the church, near the en- trance, accompanied with a serv- er carrying the aspergillum (holy water). The priest then prays the Magnificat (or Psalm 23) with the mother and invites the wom- an into the church: “Come into God’s house. Adore the Son of the Blessed Virgin Mary, and thank God who has given you the grace of motherhood.” He places the end of his stole in the woman’s hand and leads her to the altar rail in the sanctuary. Here the priest prays the Our Father quietly, then invokes God’s protection and blessing on the new mother: He then sprinkles her with holy water, again! Pope emeritus, Benedict XVI, allowed for the use of the former Rites in his document: “Summorum Pontifi- cum.” This includes the Triden- tine Mass (Extraordinary Form), the other sacraments (like Bap- tism) and blessings from the old FEBRUARY 24, 2019 7TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME An Old Blessing: The “Churching of Women” “Almighty everlasting God, who by means of the blessed Virgin Mary's childbearing has given every Christian mother joy, even in her pains of bringing forth her child; look kindly on this servant of yours who has come in glad- ness to your holy dwell- ing to offer her thanks. Roman Ritual. Although there is a modern blessing of a Mother After Childbirth in the new Book of Blessings, I have found the old ritual’s prayers more robust and its actions more expressive. It was a joy to watch our new mother smile as we blessed her femininity and honored her as a woman. I am glad to offer the “Churching of Women” to any new mother at our parish. Make sure to contact me soon after childbirth, preferably the blessing would take place upon the first time the mother comes back to church, before or after Mass. My hope is that these old rites help deepen our faith and appreciation of the graces Jesus’ Church offers. The blessing helps women to be appreciated in their motherhood and to receive the Godly strength needed to raise children and be open to life. Living out the Church’s teachings on being open to life and babies in marriage can be overwhelming, this old blessing gives the spiritual strength to a woman to persevere in her vocation. ~Fr. Tom
