1009 Notes and News SHORTAGE OF MEDICAL MANPOWER IN AMERICAN STATES A REPORT shows that by 1975 there will be a serious short- age of doctors in Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Rhode Island.l Family doctors (general practitioners, general internists, and paediatricians) are already scarce, forming only a third of the profession; 80% of these are over 50 years of age. But specialists in the three States are increasing in number, forming 37% of all physicians; 44% of these are over 50 years old, while 56% are under 50. There is a total of approximately 12,450 doctors for the area, which has an estimated population of 7,070,000. The three States urgently need more doctors, distributed more evenly among the branches of the profession. University of Cambridge Dr. I. M. Glynn has been appointed reader in membrane physiology. University of London Sir Brian Windeyer has been elected vice-chancellor for 1970-71. The title of emeritus professor of pathology has been conferred on Prof. W. H. McMenemey. Supplies of L-dopaThe Department of Health and Social Security has told

doctors that supplies of L-dopa approved by the Committeeon Safety of Drugs are shortly to become available in signi-ficant quantities. At first there will be sufficient for only9000 to 10,000 patients, but in the late autumn a consider-able expansion of production is anticipated. Of some60,000 patients in England and Wales with Parkinson’sdisease between a third and two-thirds might be expectedto benefit from L-dopa; and, since those who do benefitshould not subsequently be deprived of the drug, there will, for a time, be a gap between supply and demand. Duringthis period L-dopa will be distributed on a quota system tohospitals only, the amount to depend on the population ofeach hospital region. Until such time as supplies sufficientfor all patients likely to benefit from L-dopa can be guaran-teed, the drug will not be available on form E.c.lO.
