How it works The key to Whole Human Design is the Periodic Table of Human Elements™. It is the framework that will help you analyze the Hx behind your Ux. (It’s based on Maslow’s theory, Existentialism, Phenomenology and our two-year study at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.)

The Periodic Table is made up of 18 Human Elements.

These are elements of human experience that lead to a happier

    and more fulfilling life.

For more detail, download the workbook from our website!

Each column is based on a level of Maslow’s Hierarchy

    of Needs (1971).

    There are two types

    of elements

Once we have achieved a Freedom to Be, these elements add to a richer, more vibrant experience.

These elements untrap us from whatever is holding us back from living in a fulfilling way.

  • No matter where we go, we carry our full selves with us. When we become a “user,” we don’t set aside our hopes, fears, past or future. So why do we design as if we do?

This methodology will help you intentionally design the human experience (Hx) that lies beneath every user experience (Ux).

There are four steps to designing for the Whole Human...

    1. Go through the FREEING cards (1-11) Does this element seem especially relevant to your users or design context? If so, put it aside.

    2. Go through the FLYING cards (12-18) Does this element seem especially relevant to yoru design context or organization? If so, put it aside.

    3. Downselect Out of all the cards you set aside, choose one FREEING card and one FLYING card. Now you have a whole human strategy!

    4. Ideation In addition to brainstorming on ways to fulfill user needs, ideate for your FREEING and FLYING element. Use the design prompts on the card to help.

    1. HEALTH

  • Ownership of organism

    Designing for this element

Do your users need to feel in control of their bodies?

When we lose our physical health, our life is overridden by whatever pain, sickness or injury we’re experiencing. The loss of ownership of our bodies forces us to devote our attention to that ailment and to achieving homeostasis, rather than to ourselves. Very few things can have such a profound effect on our hope and excitement, because, when we lose the ownership of our organism, we no longer feel like helmsmen and women of our own lives; we become hijacked by the ailment.

It’s your job to help people develop a new relationship to their bodies in order to restore their feeling that they are in control of their livesv.

    • Help people listen to their bodies and what they are feeling. • Help people make sense of what they’re feeling and recognize patterns. • Help people adjust to new ways of life and restore their ability to enjoy living.

Physical safety Do your users need to feel like they are out of harm’s way?

    © 2018 Human Element

Our physical safety is the foundation of everything in our lives. When we feel like something in the world is putting us in danger, our inner alarm system is tripped--creating an overwhelming sense of fear and shutting down our bodies and minds. Furthermore, we have a hard time moving forward after trauma, because we still feel all-consumed by anxiety and constant fear that we are in harm’s way.

[1] B. A. Van der Kolk, The body keeps the score: mind, brain and body in the transformation of trauma. 2015.

Designing for this element It’s your job to do whatever you can to restore people’s sense of routine, comfort and confidence.

    • Help people go back to the basics and focus on building strength in eating, sleeping and breathing.[1] • Help people regain a sense of predictability in the world by building a routine.

  • Control of outcomes Do your users need to feel in control of what happens to them?

Every day we wake up without an ability to see what will happen to us. Sometimes a day can be perfectly mundane and expected; sometimes it can be radically unpredictable. When the world feels rational and manageable, we feel in control of our lives and our safety, but when the world intrudes on that control--by letting something bad happen--it feels chaotic, and we feel violated, threatened and frightened.

Designing for this element It’s your job to help people feel equipped to deal with the unpredictable nature of life.

    • Help people identify potential outcomes and prepare for multiple pathways rather than a fixed future. • Help people establish tactics and “disaster plans” to give a sense of control if something bad happens.

    Financial freedom

    Designing for this element

Do your users need to feel like they don’t have to compromise their well-being for money?

Financial freedom is the state of “enoughness,” having enough money to not worry about how to pay for the next flat tire, meal or medication. We don’t need to lavish excess to feel safe, but when money forces us to make decisions that put us in harm’s way or affect our well being, we become prisoners to our bank accounts.

It’s your job to help people develop confidence that their lives won’t be affected by a lack of money

    • Help people develop a mental model of what is “enough” for them. • Assist people in developing a plan to achieving “enoughness.”

  • Solidarity

    Designing for this element

Do your users need to feel like they are not alone on their journey?

Solidarity is the feeling that you have someone standing with you, arm-in-arm, as you navigate life’s ups and downs. It is a bond where two people take responsibility for each other’s happiness, reinforcing each other’s hope and strength, sharing pain and struggles and keeping each other close to heart. With solidarity, you gain a partner in all interests and a feeling that you won’t be left behind as you go through life.

Designing for this element It’s your job to help people feel the presence and involvement of others in their lives.

    • Give people the feeling of others being persistently supportive and present in their lives. • Help reinforce the feeling of “no man or woman left behind.” • Give people opportunities to show that they believe in one another • Help people provide support one another and be part of each other’s journey.

    Santuary for true self

    Designing for this element

Do your users need help talking off a mask and existing freely?

As we go through life, we learn how to hide who we truly are--to avoid being judged or hurt by others. The way in which we really want to speak, think, act, joke, look and feel is locked away inside; however, when we feel welcomed with another’s full heart, that inner spirit becomes uncaged, giving us the freedom to be authentic and explore/express new dimensions of our Self. It is infinitely empowering--to live in a way in which our outside matches the inside.

Designing for this element It’s your job to help people express themselves freely.

    • Help them shattter outer expectations and norms that don’t match the way they want to live. • Help them explore entirely new dimensions of themselves and express a new way of being. • Provide permission to be imperfect, quirky and unconventional.
