About the Healthcare Intelligence Network

The Healthcare Intelligence Network (HIN) is an electronic publishing company providing high-quality information on the business of healthcare. In one place, healthcare executives can receive exclusive, customized up-to-the-minute information in five key areas: the healthcare and managed care industry, hospital and health system management, health law and regulation, behavioral healthcare and long-term care.

Executive Summary

From early detection of impending heart failure from as far as 3,000 miles away, to the latest wearable health tracker strapped to a forearm or sitting in a pocket, telehealth is having a radical impact on the healthcare industry. The range of telehealth and telemedicine services has expanded in the two years since the Healthcare Intelligence Network (HIN) last conducted a telehealth survey, and while the majority of organizations had telehealth programs in place in both 2013 and 2015, of those that didn’t, nearly triple the respondents in 2015 (64 percent versus 26 percent) said they would launch a service in the next 12 months.

A close look at those future programs offers insight into a market predicted to rise to 7 million in 2018, according to IHS Technology. By bringing on board full panels of providers in primary and specialty care, telehealth services are being designed to tackle healthcare access challenges in the emergency room (ER), rural health clinics and post-discharge home care – the full continuum, in one respondent’s words. Planned enhancements to current telehealth programs include self-management software, the addition of a transitional care model, and the development of dermatology, behavioral health, dentistry, and high-risk population solutions.

But other metrics stayed the same: videoconferencing remained a leading technology in both 2013 (59 percent) and 2015 (48 percent), and congestive heart failure (53 percent in 2013, 57 percent in 2015) and diabetes (50 percent in 2013, 58 percent in 2015) continued to be the top conditions or concerns targeted by telehealth programs.

“Success achieved with

telehealth: Remote early detection of

impending heart failure admission from 3,000 miles

away.”

Diabetes is telehealth’s top targeted health condition, say 59 percent of respondents.

“Success achieved: Early recognition

of potentially life-threatening situations with

increase in safer deliveries for

mother and baby.”

Respondent Demographics

Responses to the March 2015 survey on telehealth and telemedicine were submitted by 116 organizations. Of 63 respondents identifying their organization type, 16 percent were hospitals, 11 percent were physician organizations, employers, and health plans, 6 percent were home healthcare, 5 percent were disease management, and 33 percent categorized their organization type as ‘Other.’

Using This Report

This benchmarking report is intended as a resource for healthcare organizations searching for comparable data and means to measure implementation and progress. It is also a helpful planning tool for organizations readying initiatives in this area.

The initial charts and graphs presented here represent results from all respondents; images in subsequent sections depict data from high-responding sectors. (Figure titles begin with the segment they represent; for example, All, Health Plans, Hospitals, etc.)

Often, one of the largest responding sectors is composed of respondents identifying their organization type as “Other.” In general, we do not depict results from this segment because it represents a wide range of organization types, including consultants and product vendors. However, you will always find a graph indicating the demographics of respondents.

Here are some additional tips for using this report:
