NOTABLE LANDMARKS AROUND THE WORLD

INTRODUCTION:Landmarks are prominent buildings or features found in various locations worldwide. They often have deep historical and cultural significance associated with the people who live nearby the landmark. Few of us are able to travel the world and view all of these magnificent structures in our lifetime. However, we are able to use Google Earth to virtually visit notable landmarks. Through Google Earth, we can simply type in a location and view it in stunning detail.

The following slides are just a handful of our earth’s awe-inspiring landmarks. The rest of the world is yours to explore.

THE COLOSSEUM, ROME, ITALY

Look at the buildings surrounding the Colosseum. Can you notice any similarities? For example, do the structures appear to have similar architecture? Do you think they are made out of the same materials?

SPACE NEEDLE, SEATTLE, WASHINGTON

The Space Needle is a famous landmark and can even be said to symbolize the city of Seattle. Think about the buildings in your hometown. Are there any buildings that you think symbolize your town? Are there any buildings in your hometown that have historical, cultural, or personal meaning to you?

SYDNEY OPERA HOUSE, SYDNEY NEW SOUTH WALES, AUSTRALIA

The Sydney Opera House has unusual architecture. Design your own landmark. Be creative and do not be afraid to use silly shapes, colors, or other design elements. What is the purpose of your landmark? An observation tower like the Space Needle? Maybe its an amphitheater like the Colosseum. Or perhaps your landmark is a library. It is completely up to you.

STATUE OF LIBERTY, LIBERTY ISLAND, NEW YORK

Think about what the Statue of Liberty means to you and to the United States of American. Then, share your thoughts with your group and discuss other possible interpretations of this landmark.
