In 2009, Trinity took our first mission trip to Puerto Penasco, Mexico. It was a beautiful group of 17 faithful workers who built our first house in Mexico. I will always remember it as the blue house. Each family picks the color of paint they want us to use. The next year when we returned, the owners of the house cooked us tamale’s to eat at lunch. The thing I remember most about that first trip was the reaction of the family. They did not really believe we were coming to build them a house. They were living in a structure made out of whatever materials they could find to build a shelter. Their bathroom was an outhouse they had created behind the house. They needed to have their current house torn down so that we could build, but they worried what would happen if we did not show up. When we arrived we still had to help with some deconstruction. At the end of the build, the mother in the house was overcome with tears (not unusual on these trips). When we asked her what she was thinking she said, “I believed that the only time I would be in a house with four solid walls, it would be my coffin.” That was a large dose of reality. This coming week we will make our 11 th trip to Peurto Penasco. We have 24 team members, many who have gone multiple times. I realized this week that it is probably my last time to be part of this ministry. It has been one of the many blessings I have received as your pastor. Please pray for the team as we travel and work together. It makes a difference. Peace, Barry By Barry Dundas IN TOUCH A publication of Trinity United Methodist Church Volume 58 March 8, 2019 901 E. In 2009, Trinity took our first mission trip to Puerto Penasco,

Mexico. It was a beautiful group of 17 faithful workers who built

our first house in Mexico. I will always remember it as the blue house. Each

family picks the color of paint they want us to use. The next year when we

returned, the owners of the house cooked us tamale’s to eat at lunch.

The thing I remember most about that first trip was the reaction of the

family. They did not really believe we were coming to build them a house.

They were living in a structure made out of whatever materials they could

find to build a shelter. Their bathroom was an outhouse they had created

behind the house. They needed to have their current house torn down so

that we could build, but they worried what would happen if we did not

show up. When we arrived we still had to help with some deconstruction. At the end

of the build, the mother in the house was overcome with tears (not unusual on these

trips). When we asked her what she was thinking she said, “I believed that the only

time I would be in a house with four solid walls, it would be my coffin.” That was a

large dose of reality.

This coming week we will make our 11th

trip to Peurto Penasco. We have 24 team

members, many who have gone multiple

times. I realized this week that it is probably

my last time to be part of this ministry. It

has been one of the many blessings I have

received as your pastor. Please pray for the

team as we travel and work together. It

makes a difference. Peace, Barry

Lori’s Lines Friends, since the 2019 Special General Conference concluded on Feb. 26, I have been trying to find the right words to say. Please know that my heart is broken for the United Methodist Church. I understand that two thirds of the United States delegates were in favor of the One Church Plan and they were hopeful to pass it. The One Church Plan also had the backing of the majority of bishops and commission members as a way for the United Methodist Church to be a global denomination in numerous local contexts. Unfortunately, this did not happen and many people and churches are hurting and weeping.

This coming Sunday we will be discussing “The Walking Wounded: Malchus the High Priest’s Servant.” Malchus was the servant attacked by Peter in the Garden of Gethsemane when the guards came to arrest Christ. Malchus’ ear was taken off by Peter’s sword. In this moment of time, I feel a lot like Malchus. I feel like I am among the walking wounded because of the decision made at General Conference. I know that sometimes our human reaction is to run from the pain, but I want to encourage you to not abandon or depart from our mission. For encouragement, let’s look closer at what happened to Malchus in his wounded state. Christ’s response was to reach out to Malchus with his healing hands and to reattach his ear. We can take comfort in knowing that Christ knows our pain and wants to comfort us in trying times. My prayer is for healing, strength, comfort, and love for all God’s people.

As your Associate Pastor, I want you to know that I LOVE YOU and care about all of you! More importantly, GOD LOVES YOU! Trinity is a remarkable church where conservatives, centrists, and progressives all come together and love one other. This DNA has NOT CHANGED! For this, I am most thankful! May we continue to show the love of Christ to all we meet.

Blessings,

Pastor Lori Persigehl ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ St. Ignatius of Loyola Prayer O Christ Jesus, When all is darkness and we feel our weakness and helplessness, give us the sense of Your presence, Your love, and Your strength. Help us to have perfect trust in Your protecting love and Your strengthening power, so that nothing may frighten or worry us, for by living close to You, we shall see Your hand, Your purpose, and Your will through all things. Amen.

Safe Gatherings • Are you looking forward to being in ministry with children, youth, or vulnerable adults? If yes, please, take the Safe Gatherings training found online. Contact Tammy Dees or Lindsey Keith to get started. Trinity will pay the $35 fee for the training. Trinity has over 80 people trained in Safe Gatherings. Thank you to all those that have stepped up on behalf of the safety of our children and adults. Save the Date • Vacation Bible School 2019, June 17-21 and 23, 9am – Noon, 3 year olds – graduated 6th graders.

Camp Promotion Sunday: March 31 • Church Camp provides a place for children, youth and adults to experience God in a new way. Traveling to a setting that includes, nature, new friends, worship settings tailored to each age group allows our spirits to open up to God in a very meaningful way. The fun of swimming, boating, canoeing, hiking, art projects and more alongside adults that love God and care about kids brings refreshing moments to the spirit. Sharing bible stories brings the faith alive when sitting together outside in God’s nature. Prayerfully consider sending your family to Church Camp this summer. On March 31, students will see and hear what United Methodist Church Camps are coming this summer in Kansas and Nebraska. Camp Scholarships will be given to each student for ½ the registration fee or $100, whichever comes first. Pray for our students and families to find the camp that will feed their spirit. Camp Scholarship Potato Bar, March 31 • Stop by the Family Life Center Sunday, March 31 between 11:00am and 1:00pm for a delicious meal of baked potato with your choice or toppings: Chili, Cheese, Broccoli Cheese, Onion, Bacon Bits, Salsa, and Sour Cream. A side dish of salad and dessert accompany the meal. Your donation will go directly to students – 100%! All food is donated by the Education Committee and former Camp Scholarship recipients. NEW s’mores & More: April 13th, 7 pm, Location TBD • A night for families to get together, discuss camp details, the possibility of carpooling, and enjoy s’mores. Children’s Sabbath has moved to March 24: Choose a Rehearsal: March 21 or March 23 • Due to weather and illness, Children’s Sabbath is postponed to Sunday, March 24. All three worship services will be led by children. The prayers written by the students and the art work created will be used during worship. Did your student sign up to help on the original date? If so, we are still planning on them participating. If your student did not have a chance to volunteer we would love to have them volunteer to help on March 24. Rehearsals will be held on Thursday, March 21, 6 – 6:30pm and Saturday, March 23, 11-11:30am. Both rehearsals are exactly the same – choose the one that fits your family the best. Contact a planning team member or call the church office to volunteer or for more information: Tammy Dees, Nikki Dankenbring and Katie Snapp, Church Office – 825-5270.

Vacation Bible School Decorating Team • Are you interested in helping prepare the Vacation Bible School decorations? Contact a planning team member to volunteer or come to the Orientation meeting on Wednesday, April 3 at 6pm. So many ways to help! Items prepared for you to take home and work on. Come to a work night hosted by the Decorating Planning Team, childcare provided. Choose a room to dream up and prepare for Vacation Bible School alongside several other volunteers. For more information contact a planning team member: Megan Gibson, Mandi Feil and Marion Barrow.

TUMC College Scholarships T h e T r i n i t y S c h o l a r s h i p Sub-Committee will be offering college scholarships to Trinity youth, who are high school seniors this year. These scholarships will be for use dur-ing the 2019-2020 academic year at any college of the student’s choice. Because of the large number of scholarships given last year and the significant earnings losses in the 4th quarter of 2018, we have been financially forced to temporarily limit scholarship recipients to high school seniors only. We look forward to continued contributions to the Trinity College Scholarship Fund coming from benefit concerts, memorial donations and contributions made by individuals and/or groups supporting Trinity youth. We have decided to set aside a portion of this fund as a long-term investment which will continue to grow with gifts and memorials so that the earnings from this portion can provide meaningful scholarships for both high school seniors and undergraduate college students in the future. Applications for scholarships are now available in the church office and on the church website: https://www.triumc.org/youth/#college The deadline for receipt of the completed scholarship application is the close of the church business day on April 19, 2019. The scholarship committee will announce the recipient of the scholarships during church services on Senior Recognition Sunday, May 5, 2019.

Our Church News Continued

Again this year, our Trinity Foundation will be participating in the Match Madness event sponsored by the Greater Salina Community Foundation (GSCF) on Thursday, March 21st. During this day, you will be able to make a gift to the endowment fund of the Trinity Foundation and your gift will be matched proportionally up to 50% by the GSCF from a pool of $150,000. The matching amount this year will be deposited into the scholarship fund of the Foundation to provide college scholarships for Trinity youth. You can either come to the Salina Fieldhouse, 140 N. 5th, between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. to write a check to the GSCF with “Trinity Foundation” in the memo line or you may make an online donation at www.matchmadnessgscf.org between midnight and 11:59 p.m. The donation limit is $2,000 per charity per donor. In addition, Larry Michel will be shooting free throws at 5:00 for a chance to add $100 to our investment fund. Come and cheer him on. The Trinity Foundation is a separate 501(c)(3) corporation that, over the past 24 years, has provided 38 grants totaling over $34,500 to support ministries at our church besides building an endowment fund to secure the future of Trinity. If you have been considering giving a gift to the Trinity Foundation, March 21st would be an excellent day to maximize your donation.

Camera Operator Needed—8:30 Service Thanks to Charles Lee who has been making the announcement slides and running the camera at the 8:30 service for many years. He has done an excellent job. He even made the slides when out of town. He provided the online audience with good video so they could experience church at home or on the road. He is retiring from these volunteer positions. It may take three volunteers to replace him.

Believe it or not, I think I might have the volunteers.

Trinity is a great place where people step up to serve! Keith Holmes
