Background InformationPerformance and Visual Arts, or 'the arts' include
many fields of study. Dance, drama, music, design, studio art, photography, and film and
are just examples of the many subjects one can explore. Training is very important when
choosing a career in the arts. Many schools, colleges, and universities are specifically for those who wish to make art their profession,
but most large colleges and universities offer a Liberal Arts program among other core
degrees.
What is getting an art degree like?
“Within the visual and performing arts or the branch chosen, training focuses on
both the history and theory of the discipline as well as the actual practice of
professional life therein.” (“Visual and Performing,”)
Do you need formal education in the arts to be successful?
Although naturally talented individuals can have success in an art career without formal
training, there are many aspects to consider. Developing skills in an organized environment helps promote discipline and team work, both
essential to a career in the arts. “To ensure the success of their endeavors, [artists] will also need to
learn and understand how community arts projects are organized, funded, managed, and promoted. (“Xavier University art,”)
Careers in the arts today
Currently, careers in art are very relevant and for the most part abundant.
“The explosion of eMedia and popular culture has created parallel growth and demand for the traditional visual and
performing arts disciplines. (“Careers in the,”)
