In the Magnaflux test the surface of the steel is lightly covered with finely divided magnetic particles and is then magnetized so that the forma- tion of an external field is prevented.I positions, and tanks are on the table, and located on the map by means of the reference points. The miniature mortar is a brass tube with a firing mechanism consist- ing of a plunger operated by rubber bands. A collar around the tube ad- justs the tension of the rubber bands to correspond to the number of rings of powder in the propelling charge. At the Automotive Labora- tories, Building 31, Milton McCleod, '35 and Richard Purcell, '35, student inventors of the electrical Odometer will demonstrate their device on visi- tors' cars. The electrical Odometer consists of a generator driven by a bicycle wheel which is slung on the running board of the car. Tfhe generator actuates a voltmeter which is accurately cali- brated in miles per hour. Other exhibits in the Automotive Laboratories include a setup for de- termining the air consumption of a Ford V-8 motor -under operating con- ditions and a device for measuring .clutch slip under different conditions of load. By the use of a complex organic material known as luminol, light can be produced wit l sufficient intensity to permit the reading of a newspaper. Tlhe strange feature of this source of light is that there is no appreciable rise in temperature of the liquid chemicals. One cap even clip his hands into the fiery liquid without the .slight- est injury. Many instances of development of visible radiation are on record, but none can compare with the brilliancy of the "cold light" to be produced to- day. It is probably the brightest case of chemiluminescence onl record. Most chemiluininescence reactions are oxidations. It is produced by treat- ment of a dilute aqueous alkaline so- lution of "luminol" (3 aminophthal^ hydrazide) with both hydrogen per- oxnde and another oxidizing agent. Corps Reviewedand Awards Made

Local Chapter Scabbardand Blade

The cadet corps of the R. O. T. C.of Technology were reviewed Wednes-day afternoon by Miss Mary Comp-ton, daughter of President Karl T.Compton, who has been chosen honor-ary colonel of the local chapter ofScabbard and Blade.

Miss Compton was escorted by CadetColonel Elmer J. Roth, of SouthOrange, N. J., and Captain LawrenceW. Sharpe, of Hollywood, Calif., whois also captain of Scabbard and Blade.She was introduced to the regulararmy officers at the review, andColonel Roth theta presented her tohis cadet staff of majors.

After inspection of the various com-panies, the entire corps passed in re-.view before Miss Compton and the-officers in the reviewing group.

The regular army officers who as--sisted the cadets at the review wereColonel Samuel C. Vestal, head of the,department of military science; Col-onel Robert Arthur, Major Oscar J.Gatchell, Major Thomas J. Johnston,Captain Bayard Johnson, CaptainJames P. C. Hyde, Captain Charles EB.Atkinson, Lieutenant George A.Bicher, and Lieutenant W. C. D.Bridges.

Scholarships PresentedDuring the review Miss Compton

presented the army ordnance scholar-ships. The senior award went to Lieu-tenant Colonel Thonet C. Dauphinle,of Faribault, Minn., and the junioraward to Second Lieutenant RudolphJ. Ozol ofe Boston.

Miss Compton was also the guest ofhonor at the Scabbard and Blade ballheld in Walker Memorial on Fridayevening. She led the grand marchunder crossed sabres a colorful mili-tary ceremony seldom seen outsideWest Point.

Passing in Review Technology GraduateWilns Award in BridgeDesigning Competition

Contest

Jerome M. Raphael, '34, a studentat the Institute, won first prize in theseventh annual bridge design compeltition held by the American Instituteof Steel Construction. AlexanderMatthews, Jr., a student at the YaleSchool of Engineering, won secondprize. First honorable mention wasgiven to David Hiat of New YorkUniversity, and second honorable men-tion to Fred A. Thompson, Jr., ofIowa State College.

The problem was to design a steelgrade crossing elimination bridgwcarrying a highway over a railroadand another highway parallel to therailroad. In addition to giving stu-dents certificates of award, the firstprize carries a cash compensation of$100 and the second prize $SO.

These awards were made from the10 best designs selected in a prelimi-nary competition when 94 studentsfrom 22 colleges in the United Statenentered drawings. The jury of awardconsisted of Dr. Shortridge Hardestyand E. R. Needles, consulting engin-eers of New York; H. Craig Sever-ance, J. Andre Fouilhoux, architectsof New York, and A. Lawrenct;Kocher, managing editor of The Arch-itectural Record.

Raphael is the son of Mrs. GeorgeRaphael of 152 Homes Avenue, Dor-chester. He was graduated from Tech-nology last year with the degree ofbachelor of science in architectural en-gineering, and is now studying forhis master's degree, doing much ofhis work in the department of civilengineering.

the Absorbtometer for their rate ofabsorption of moisture. This machineautomatically records the changingweight of a brick as it soaks up water.Mechanical strength tests such asmodulus of rupture and compressivestrength, are next made. Thin sectionstaken from the broken halves are ex-amined microscopically so as to learnthe condition of the bond layer be-tween the brick and the mortar.

Test of AssemblagesOther brick from the shipment are

made up into assemblages which afterappropriate ageing and curing arebroken by tension, and their bondstrength computed. This afternoon andevening, the men in the laboratorywill demonstrate their methodsthrough actual testing operations onmortar flow, brick density, absorptionand bond strength.

Difference In Time of TidesThere is a difference of three hours

in the tide times in the bays. As a -result, the tide in Buzzards Bay is ris-ing while the sea is still falling inCape CodBays and the tide in Bulzz-ards Bay begins to ebb several hoursbefore high water at the other end ofthe canal.

Nine Foot Tide DifferencesOccasionally, under unusual condi-

tions of flood tide driven by highwinds, maximum differences in levelof nine feet betwveenI the bays mayocculr.

At high tide in Cape -Cod Bay thewater rushes westward through thecanal to the lower level in BuzzardsBRay. Six hours later the current re--verses and flows swiftly to the east.

Strong CurrentsUnder ordinary conditions the miax-

imum. velocity of these currents ex-ceeds three miles an. 'hour, while dulr-ing storm-, it may reach nearly fivemiles an hfour.

Scale of Nine Feet to the MileTrhe model will be built to the scale

Because of certain structural pecul-iarities of the cotton fiber, it has beenpossible to develop in the Textile Lab-oratory of the Institute a techniqueto measure the "maturity" of thisfiber.

This process will be exhibited aspart of the Open House today. Thistechnique, which involves the use of apolarized microscope, is simplicity initself and yet provides for smootheroperation of the textile mill, and finerquality products.

Bad Fibers Mar QualityThe textile industry has long been

aware of the fact that immaturefibers fail to contribute an adequateshare to the strength of the yarn, andthat they tend to disappear in themanufacturing process causing an un-due amount of waste. They causedifficulties in dyeing and similar oper-ations, since they resist the reactionof swelling agents and do not takedyes to produce a shade similar tothat found on mature fibers.

cate and sensitive. Fine screws movethe needles with an accuracy of.000025 inch, and by observation underhigh power lenses, its movement canbe controlled to pick out the desiredparticles. This instrument promisesto be of great aid in the study of bi-ology.

Through its use, microscopic ani-mals and living cells can be subjectedto selective degradation in an effortto find what parts of the cell are nec-essary to continued life. Many prob-lems long debated in biological circlesmay be solved by its use.

Water supplied at the rate of 24,00(gallons per minute at a height of 40feet is the job performed by a cen-trifugal pump in the basement of theSteam Lab., Building 3, for the pur-pose of studying engineering methods.

Direct connection is made to a 325horse power, angle-compound steamengine. The pump has a 30 inch suc-tion, and a 30 inch exhaust, and oper-ates at 240 revolutions per minute.Because of the intensity of the suc-tion developed, the intake pipe isplaced five feet below the surface ofthe water so that air will not bedrawn in and spoil the operation.

Exceeds Rated CapacityAlthough the pump has a rated

capacity of 24,000 gallons per minute,it has delivered as much as 38,000 gal-lons per minute in tests. All thiswater is drawn from a canal 10 feetdeep, located in the floor of Building 3.

The water leaving the pump is shotthrough a Venturi meter to determineits velocity, and then, knowing thearea of the tube, one is enabled tocalculate the volume of wvater flowing.

strations arranged in the HydraulicsLab. This action which tears water

wheels and other hydraulic equipment

to pieces is produced and explained

in the display.When water flows through a con-

striction in its path, it sometimes hap-

pens that the velocity is too great to

permit it to follow the contour of thepath exactly. It is when this happensthat cavitation occurs.

Low Pressure RegionsIn the "vacant" hollows which the

swiftly moving water is unable toreach, there is a region of flow press-ure, so that water is vaporized veryreadily, and water vapor fills thespace. This "bubble" of vapor is car-ried along, but soon collapses. At thepoint of collapse, the impact of thewater on the container is so great thatpitting occurs .

A "visible flow" Venturi jet illus-trates the conditions causing cavita-tion, while samples show the actual r~e-sult of metal plugs and glass platesexposed to the flow. The pits, whichresemble the work of a "diamond-billed" woodpecker, are clearly visibleon the polished surface.

In previous studies in the Institute'sRiver Hydraulic Laboratory on asmaller model of the canal, methodswere devised to produce waves rang-ing from slight ripples to the fullserge of the tide. Delicate instrumentsrecord these waves in the canal andsupply data for calculations.

Time as well as physical propor-tions are reduced in these experi-ments, making it possible to producethe complete cycle of the tide, whichin nature requires twelve hours, with-in a few minutes.

The reproduction of Buzzards Bayalone, with its numerous inlets andislands, will occupy a space of 35 by50 feet.

Enlargement of the canal is expect-ed to change the sea levels at bothends of the canal and to alter thevelocities of the currents through thewaterway.

At present, water flows through thecanal at approximately 13,500,000 gal-

lons per minute. After the enlarge-

ment the flow is expected to be at

least 75,000,000 gallons per minute.

Tides to be ReproducedScientific devices will accurately re-

produce in miniature the ebb and flowof the tides, and various floats ar-ranged along the canal will record theeffect of currents and wave motion.

The rise and fall of the tide, al-tfhough imperceptible to the eye, isactually. the motion of a giganticwave.

Still in operation, a steam engineinvented fifty years ago that set newrecords of economy at that time andlater became the "testing ground" formodern steam engine design, is beingshown in the Steam Lab., in Building3 today.

Built in 1885Built for the Institute about the

year 1885, this engine is especially de-signed to facilitate experimental oper-ation. The three cylinders develop 50horse power each, running at a speediof 80 revolutions per minute.

[Sizes of the cylinders are 9, 16, andj24 inches, with low, intermediate, andhigh steam pressures respectively.Connections are designed so that anyor all of the cylinders may be usedsingly, or in any combination. In thecustomary operation, exhaust steamfrom the cylinders is admitted to thenext larger cylinder, that from thelargest going to a condenser.

Steam JacketingProvision was made to allow re-

I heating the steam between cylinders.Steam jackets are built around thecylinders, and these may also be usedor not, depending on the operator'swishes. Steam pressure used is 160pounds, in the high pressure cylinder.

mMuch of the experimental work onlsteam engine operation was done onthis engine, and it was the testingground for theories of design. Muchfiof our present knowledge would havebeen delayed if it were not for thecomparison of conditions and resultsmade possible by this installation.

Absorbtometer TestThese are remeasured and tested in

the Absorbtometer for their rate ofabsorption of moisture. This machineautomatically records the changingweight of a brick as it soaks up water.Mechanical strength tests such asmodulus of rupture and compressivestrength, are next made. Thin sectionstaken from the broken halves are ex-amined microscopically so as to learnthe condition of the bond layer be-tween the brick and the mortar.

Test of AssemblagesOther brick from the shipment are

made up into assemblages which afterappropriate ageing and curing arebroken by tension, and their bondstrength computed. This afternoon andevening, the men in the laboratorywill demonstrate their methodsthrough actual testing operations onmortar flow, brick density, absorptionand bond strength.

Microscopic SectionsSlices showing microscopic views of

the bond layer between mortar and.brick will be shown to the public. Thecuring room, with its apparatus forcontrolling the humidity and tempera-ture of the atmosphere, will be openfor inspection.

Cape Cod Canal and Buzzards Bayare shown in a huge scale model beingbuilt in Building 20, to enable engin-eers to study in advance the effectsof the proposed enlargement of thewaterway.

The model of the canal will showit as it will appear, widened to 700feet on the surface and dredged to adepth of 40 feet.

To Accommodate LinersThis enlargement will provide a

waterway capable of accommodatingmost of the large liners, as well asnaval vessels. The model will be 116feet long and will occupy all of Build-ing 20, which has been set aside forthis research.

Directed by Prof. Reynolds.The project is under the direction

of Professor Kenneth C. Reynolds ofthe Department of Civil and SanitaryEngineering, who is co-operating withColonel John J. Kingman of the Unit-ed States Army Engineers Corps in astudy of the hydraulic problems thatwill be encountered in enlarging thecanal.

Work to Last Several MonthsLieutenant E. C. Harwood is super-

vising the study for the government,and Donald F. Horton is his repre.sentative in residence at the Insti-tute. The work is expected to last forseveral months.

The complex nature of the investi-gation is indicated by the fact thatthe average rise and fall of the tidein Cape Cod Bay is five feet greaterthan in Buzzards Bay, thirteen milebdistant through the canal.

Difference In Time of TidesThere is a difference of three hours

in the tide times in the bays. As a re-sult, the tide in Buzzards Bay is ris-ing while the sea is still falling inCape Cod Bay, and the tide in Buzz-ards Bay begins to ebb several hoursbefore high water at the other end ofthe canal.

tions of flood tide driven by highwinds, maximum differences in levelof nine feet between the bays mayoccur.

At high tide in Cape Cod Bay thewater rushes westward through thecanal to the lower level in BuzzardsBay. Six hours later the current re-verses and flows swiftly to the east.

Strong CurrentsUnder ordinary conditions the max-

imum velocity of these currents ex-ceeds three miles an hour, while dur-ing storms it may reach nearly fivemiles an hour.

Scale of Nine Feet to the MileThe model will be built to the scale

of approximately nine feet to themile, and will be constructed of con-crete and sand to form a channel ac-curately reproducing the curved pathof the canal across the Cape.

Technology GraduateWins Award in BridgeDesigning Competition

Jerome M. Raphael, '34 Is GivenFirst Prize In A.I.S.C.

Contest

Jerome M. Raphael, '34, a studentat the Institute, won first prize in theseventh annual bridge design compe-tition held by the American Instituteof Steel Construction. AlexanderMatthews, Jr., a student at the YaleSchool of Engineering, won secondprize. First honorable mention wasgiven to David Hiat of New YorkUniversity, and second honorable men-tion to Fred A. Thompson, Jr., ofIowa State College.

The problem was to design a steelgrade crossing elimination bridgecarrying a highway over a railroadand another highway parallel to therailroad. In addition to giving stu-dents certificates of award, the firstprize carries a cash compensation of$100 and the second prize $50.

These awards were made from the10 best designs selected in a prelimi-nary competition when 94 studentsfrom 22 colleges in the United Statenentered drawings. The jury of awardconsisted of Dr. Shortridge Hardestyand E. R. Needles, consulting engin-eers of New York; H. Craig Sever-ance, J. Andre Fouilhoux, architectsof New York, and A. LawrenceKocher, managing editor of The Arch-itectural Record.

Raphael is the son of Mrs. GeorgeRaphael of 152 Homes Avenue, Dor-chester. He was graduated from Tech-nology last year with the degree ofbachelor of science in architectural en-gineering, and is now studying forhis master's degree, doing much ofhis work in the department of civilengineering.

Colonel Elmer J. Roth, of SouthOrange, N. J., and Captain LawrenceW. Sharpe, of Hollywood, Calif., whois also captain of Scabbard and Blade.She was introduced to the regulararmy officers at the review, andColonel Roth then presented her tohis cadet staff of majors.

After inspection of the various com-panies, the entire corps passed in re-view before Miss Compton and theofficers in the reviewing group.

The regular army officers who as-sisted the cadets at the review wereColonel Samuel C. Vestal, head of thedepartment of military science; Col-onel Robert Arthur, Major Oscar J.Gatchell, Major Thomas J. Johnston,Captain Bayard Johnson, CaptainJames F. C. Miss Compton was also the guest ofhonor at the Scabbard and Blade ballheld in Walker Memorial on Fridayevening. She led the grand marchunder crossed sabres a colorful mili-tary ceremony seldom seen outsideWest Point.

Water Is Supplied At the RateOf 24,000 Gallons Per

Each .Minute

Water supplied at the rate of 24,000gallons per minute at a height of 40feet is the job performed by a cen-trifugal pump in the basement of theSteam Lab., Building 3, for the pur-pose of studying engineering methods.

Direct connection is made to a 325horse power, angle-compound steamengine. The pump has a 30 inch suc-tion, and a 30 inch exhaust, and oper-ates at 240 revolutions per minute.Because of the intensity of the suc-tion developed, the intake pipe isplaced five feet below the surface ofthe water so that air will not bedrawn in and spoil the operation.

Exceeds Rated CapacityAlthough the pump has a rated

capacity of 24,000 gallons per minute,it has delivered as much as 38,000 gal-lons per minute in tests. All thiswater is drawn from a canal 10 feetdeep, located in the floor of Building 3.

The water leaving the pump is shotthrough a Venturi meter to determineits velocity, and then, knowing thearea of the tube, one is enabled tocalculate the volume of water flowing.

Because of certain structural pecul-iarities of the cotton fiber, it has beenpossible to develop in the Textile Lab-oratory of the Institute a techniqueto measure the "maturity" of thisfiber.

This process will be exhibited aspart of the Open House today. Thistechnique, which involves the use of apolarized microscope, is simplicity initself and yet provides for smootheroperation of the textile mill, and finerquality products.

Bad Fibers Mar QualityTIMe textile industry has long been

aware of the fact that immaturefibers fail to contribute an adequateshare to the strength of the yarn, andthat they tend to disappear in themanufacturing process causing an un-due amount of waste. They causedifficulties in dyeing and similar oper-ations, since they resist the reactionof swelling agents and do not takedyes to produce a shade similar tothat found on mature fibers.

Graded in Four GroupsBy the technique developed it is

possible in the Laboratory and in sev-eral of the mills that have adoptedthe technique to grade cotton into atleast four groups of relative maturity.No particular training is necessaryfor the observer provided only that hecan distinguish between yellow-green,blue and purple.

One of the features of this eveningwill be the showing of a Micro Manip-ulator. This device, which has recentlycome into use in biological science, en-ables investigators to reach into liv-ing cells placed under high powermicroscopes, and move the differentparts of the organism about.

By the use of capillary needlesmade of fine glass, microscopic part-icles of the cell can be removed, orsubstances can be injected to note theeffect on the living organism.

Accurate to .000025 InchesThe instrument is extremely deli-

cate and sensitive. Fine screws movethe needles with an accuracy of.000025 inch, and by observation underhigh power lenses, its movement canbe controlled to pick out the desiredparticles. This instrument promisesto be of great aid in the study of bi-ology.

Through its use, microscopic ani-mals and living cells can be subjectedto selective degradation in an effortto find what parts of the cell are nec-essary to continued life. Many prob-lems long debated in biological circlesmay be solved by its use.

In previous studies in the Institute'sRiver Hydraulic Laboratory on asmaller model of the canal, methodswere devised to produce waves rang-ing from slight ripples to the fullserge of the tide. Delicate instrumentsrecord these waves in the canal andsupply data for calculations.

Time as well as physical propor-tions are reduced in these experi-ments, making it possible to producethe complete cycle of the tide, whichin nature requires twelve hours, with-in a few minutes.

Still in operation, a steam engininvented fifty years ago that set nevrecords of economy at that time an,later became the "testing ground" fomodern steam engine design, is beinjshown in the Steam Lab., in Building3 today. I

Built in 1885Built for the Institute about the

year 1885, this engine is especially de.signed to facilitate experimental oper.ation. The three cylinders develop 5(horse power each, running at a speesof 80 revolutions per minute.

Sizes of the cylinders are 9, 16, and24 inches, with low, intermediate, andhigh steam pressures respectively,Connections are designed so that anyor all of the cylinders may be usedsingly, or in any combination. In thecustomary operation, exhaust steamfrom the cylinders is admitted to thenext larger cylinder, that from thelargest going to a condenser.

Steam JacketingProvision was made to allow re-

Iheating the steam between cylinders.Steam jackets are built around thecylinders, and these may also be usedor not, depending on the operator'swishes. Steam pressure used is 160pounds, in the high pressure cylinder.

Much of the experimental work onsteam engine operation was done onthis engine, and it was the testingground for theories of design. Mouchof our present knowledge would havebeen delayed if it were not for thecomparison of conditions and resultsmade possible by this installation.

Tides to be ReproducedScientific devices will accurately re-

produce in miniature the ebb and flowof the tides, and various floats ar-ranged along the canal will record theeffect of currents and wave motion.

The rise and fall of the tide, al-though imperceptible to the eye, isactually the motion of a giganticwave.

The reproduction of Buzzards Bayalone, with its numerous inlets andislands, will occupy a space of 35 by50 feet.

Enlargement of the canal is expect-ed to change the sea levels at bothends of the canal and to alter thevelocities of the currents through thewaterway.

ed in metal and glass by the actionof water alone--is one of the demon-strations arranged in the HydraulicsLab. This action which tears waterwheels and other hydraulic equipmentto pieces is produced and explainedin the display.

When water flows through a con-striction in its path, it sometimes hap-pens that the velocity is too great topermit it to follow the contour of thepath exactly. It is when this happensthat cavitation occurs.

Low Pressure RegionsIn the "vacant" hollows which the

swiftly moving water is unable toreach, there is a region of flow press-ure, so that water is vaporized veryreadily, and water vapor fills thespace. This "bubble" of vapor is car-ried along, but soon collapses. At thepoint of collapse, the impact of thewater on the container is so great thatpitting occurs .

A "visible flow" Venturi jet illus-trates the conditions causing cavita-tion, while samples show the actual re-suit of metal plugs and glass platesexposed to the flow. The pits, whichresemble the work of a "diamond-billed" woodpecker, are clearly visibleon the polished surface.

This subject of dutch treats was de-bated to a capacity crowd recentlywith Radcliffe favoring dutch treats.

Philip Scarito, president of the So-ciety, will preside as chairman.

The Department of Mining andMetallurgy, which has the most im-posing name of any department, withthe exception of the Department ofBusiness and Engineering Adminis-tration, is repeating its usual exhibitof the process of extracting gold fromores. Every year, they lose about tenper cent of the ore, to visitors whostealthily look around to see if any-one is looking, then appropriate apiece to take home and show everyonewhat real gold ore is like. Our writings are usually humorous.We have found that when we producea straight edit column, everyone looksfor the double meaning. Only a fewweeks ago, we deplored the vote ofthe girls from Wellesley to "bear armsin case the United States were invad-ed." And just to prove that we weren'tentirely destitute of a liberal educa-tion, we added "id est, pugnare". Nextday, everyone was laughing at theGood Joke.

Open HouseAnyhow, we're going to try to give

you an inside impression of Technol-ogy which is just a bit more than theaverage Open House visitor perceives.We've met literally-hundreds of peo-ple who came to Open House, andwent away with the idea that Tech isa sort of conglomeration of long cor-ridors. Van de Graaf "man-made light-ning, at last man is rivalling and out-doing Nature", airplane wind-tunnels,more corridors, and mercury vaporlamps. The last are those horridlights that make you look like a crossbetween an anemic green cheese, andthe Bride of Frankenstein.

Those grim looking young "soldiers"in uniform are not stationed aroundTechnology to guard its secret formnu-lae and priceless equipment. In thefirst place they are not soldiers, butR. O. T. C. freshmen, and in the sec-ond they are not "guarding", but"guiding". They probably have enoughtrouble guarding themselves againstthe winsome misses who think theiruniforms are just too too cute. Theguides can tell you where Rooms 10-250, and 5-330 are, and can direct youto buildings 1, 2, 3, and 4, but you getinto difficult numbers like 6-312, and35-108, they're a bit confused.

Seeing the InstituteWe realize, of course, the difficulty

which a visitor for the first, or eventhe fifth time to Open House experi-ences in getting around to see all ofthe important exhibits. So we'd liketo give just a few words of advice.Read the programs, and follow them.See the non-technical exhibits, as wellas the technical ones. After all, youcan see the model boat exhibit at anytime, but if you miss the TechniqueRush, or the Tech Show skits, you'reout of luck. And of course, if you don'tknow your way around, you can' askthe guides. The composite ad-ice ofthree or four should get you whereyou're going.

Frosh AnticsNow that we've got the serious part

of our column off, we can relax a bit.The freshman class, we hear, is run-ning an exhibit of their hobbies. Well,we're somewhat doubtful, becausewe've got an idea that if all of thefreshman hobbies were laid end to endin the Main Lobby, Dean Lobdellwould make all the girls get right upand go home. And speaking of thatmethod of making generalities, if allof the people who come to visit OpenHouse today were laid end to end to-night, they lwould be darn glad to getoff their feet.Co-eds

As you may be aware from infor-mation contained elsewhere in thisissue, Technologx has been blessedwith a number of co-eds. That is,there are a number of co-eds; wehaven't made up our mind yet whetheror not their presence is a blessing. Ofcourse, we have whiled away many anidle hour by proclaiming to the worldin this column their faults and some-what doubtful virtues. So we do feela bit thankful for them, becausewhenever the freshmen, or TubbyRogers, or Professor Wiener fail todo anything sensational to commenton, we can always fall back on aminor scandal of the Margaret Cheneyroom. Incidentally, we have found outwhy co-eds as a rule do better in their

The study of the humanities, or humanism,may be defined in general as any system ofthought or action in which man, his interests,and his development, are made dominant.Walter Lippmann has said "humanism takesas its dominant pattern the progress of the in-dividual from helpless infancy to self-govern-ing maturity." The relation of a study of thehumanities to a complete knowledge of peopleand thus to a more probable success in leader-ship is obvious. Truly, then, a finished studyof the humanities will better enable the engin-eer to understand more fully problems ofhuman nature and to comprehend more easilythe actions of his fellow men, resulting in animprovement in his capacity to act as a leader.But time, unfortunately, does not permit sucha study.

It follows that the engineering school mustselect such subjects within the humanities aswill best benefit the student, providing himwith an education with which he is more prop-erly fitted to understand human relationshipsand thus to meet problems of life. Instructionin the correct studies should be made availableto all active students during his short fouryears of higher education.

The selection of non-technical subjectsshould not be left to the student's unguidedjudgment; in the choice of these all-importanthumanities. The school should provide a well-rounded schedule of studies in the humanitiesto be included in the curricula of all students.

Language, including English and at leastone foreign language; business subjects, in-cluding accounting and bookkeeping; econom-ics; and a general study of history are recom-mended as subjects to be contained in the stu-dent engineer's curriculum.

As is suggested by Mr. Dow, history shouldserve as a background for all instruction inthe humanities. History can be tied directlyto any single type of study in the humanities.It can form the basis of all teaching. To ac-complish this and, it should, of course, be prop-erly taught, i.e., in such a manner that thecorrect relations existing between it and thesubject classified beneath it are clearlybrought out.

Youngmen from high schools and preparatoryschools around Boston annually avail them-selves of this opportunity to see at first handthe results of research and study at the Insti-tute during the past year. Technically mindedlaymen and scientists from other colleges arealso present to review Technology's educa-tional plant.

Open House also offers an opportunity forstudents here to get acquainted with the workin departments other than their own in a mostinteresting fashion. The greatest danger tothe student of a technical school is that ofspecialization and intellectual narrowness.The great amount of information in the stu-dent's own field which must be learned in theshort space of four or five years leads the stu-dent to neglect the broadening of his mindwhich differentiates the outstanding from themediocre engineer or scientist.

An engineering education, regardless of thefield studied, consists-fundamentally of the ac-quisition of an understanding of a few basicnatural laws. Specialization is familiarity withthe unique applications of these basic laws tothe problems of the chosen field. Very oftenapplications that may seem unique to one fieldprove to be of great value in other fields. Thusthe engineer or scientist whose education hasbeen a broad one very often finds himself dis-tinctly in an advantageous position when newproblems are presented to him.

Today the work of students in all fields ofscience and engineering is on display. We hopethat the exhibits will be patronized not onlyby the public for whom they were designed butalso by our own fellow students seeking towiden their intellectual background.

HUMANITIES AND THE ENGINEERBROAD EDUCATION NEEDED

ENERALLY recognized among prominentexecutives in our national industries is

the opinion that a complete education for theengineer must include a study of what arevaguely termed the humanities.

Alex Dow, President of the Detroit EdisonCompany, presented a typical example of thebelief prevailing among leaders of industrytoward a broader education of the engineer inan article which appeared in the A. I. E. E.publication "Electrical Engineering" for De-cember, 1934.

Mr. Dow maintained that a study of thehumanities would better enable the engineer tosolve problems in human nature. He said thesuccessful engineer "will surely in time beoffered opportunities wherein he will need theaptness of the executivewho knows that it isimperative to decide quickly, even though thedecision may be imperfect; he will see that hemust avail himself of other hnuman beings asassistants or delegates, even though these arenot to his heart's desire; and find that he mustrecognize and allow for an infinity of variables,requiring of him at the one end of his knowl-edge of the humanities, a silent comprehen-sion of mass psychology, and at the other endan occasional outspoken exhibition of what iscolloquially called 'horse sense'."

The word, humanities has been indefinitelydefined as a term used in connection with theculture which rests in general upon a classicaltraining. In truth, the humanities are thosebranches of knowledge which tend to developthe qualities which are most characteristic ofthe cultivated man.

STILL DEPRESSION BABIESSpring of every year sees a great, new and ever-

increasing flood of embryo business men and women,doctors, lawyers, and engineers graduated by the uni-versities of this continent. They are supposed to taketheir place in civilization-somehow or other civiliza-tion has had little or no place for them during thepast five years. What to do?

The younger generation may very fairly place theblame for their dilemma upon the shoulders of thosewho are directing the destinies of the nations of theworld. They at least had a start in the world, even ifthey feel the cold breath of adversity today-but theirchildren can find little or nothing to do in the everydaybusiness world. It is up to them to remedy this situ-ation.

The governments of the world are at last doingsomething about the situation-whether they willeventually be successful can not be said with anycertainty. They are trying. Even if they do succeed,the present generation graduating from college willnot feel the benefits of their efforts. Something mustbe done in the meantime that will go into action im-mediately. There are many people in the business andprofessional worlds who are still earning far far moremoney than they actually require to lead a comfort-able and happy life--Let them give a helping hand tothose who are just starting their career in the world.Let the Doctor or Lawyer with the large and lucrativepractice take some youngster just starting for him-self, and give him a boost up.

The business man must realize that it is a poor wayto economize by refusing positions to those who event-ually will take their place when they are gone. Whoknows how much of this depression would not havebeen avoided if many of the best and most able of thepresent generation of fathers and mothers had notdied in the war. Do we wish this to happen again asthe result of our own acts ? Surely not.

Spectrum Measurements In PastRequired Period Of

Several Days

Automatic measurement and compu-tation of spectral wave lengths is ac-complished by a machine recently in-vented by Prof. Harrison of the In-Stitute. The device may be seen in thespectroscopy laboratory in the base-ment of Building 6.

To measure a spectrum in the past,the photograph of the lines was placedon a comparator, a delicate machinecapable of making measurements towithin 1/25,000th of an inch. The dis-tances of the spectrum lines fromsome of the standard lines were ob-served and recorded to six or sevendecimal places.

By this method, the task of measur-ing the many lines that appear ohmost plates often required severaldays. Also several measurements ofeach plate had to be taken to elimi-nate the errors caused by temperaturechanges in the mechanisms used.Measurements Speeded Up 20 TimesThe new machine, which is on dis-

play today, although it is still in theprocess of development, takes meas-urements 20 times as fast as any othermethods and produces results that aretwice as accurate. It is expected thefurther developments of the machinewill make it 200 or more times fasterthan the old method.

A five year course is offered which combines study in Engineering or Science andEconomics or other social sciences. This leads to the degree of Bachelor of Science inthe professional field and the degree of Master of Science in Economics and Engineeringor Science.

Graduate courses leading to the degrees of Master of Science, Master of Architec-ture, Doctor of Philosophy, Doctor of Science, and Doctor of Public Health are offerled.A course in Public Health is offered, which is essentially equivalent to that prescribedfor the degree of Master of Science, and leads to a Certificate in Public Health.

Graduates of colleges or of scientific schools of collegiate grade, and in general allapplicants presenting satisfactory certificates showing work done at another collegecorresponding approximately to at least one year's work at the Institute, are admittedto such advanced standing as is warranted by their previous training, and are givenlcredit for our required subjects, including the entrance requirements, so far as theyhave been satisfactorily completed.

The Summer Session extending from June to September includes most of the sub-jects given during the academic year.

With the awarding of the TyroMedals to the victorious freshmanrifle team on last Wednesday after-noon, the semi-final chapter in riflehistory for the 1934-35 season wasbrought to a successful conclusion.Miss Mary Compton, daughter ofPresident Compton, acting as honor-ary Colonel of the Technology R. O.T. C. units presented David C. Whit-aker, Harold E. Cude, Jr., JohnSarano and Lloyd M. Hier with thecoveted awards at the Corps reviewat that time.

These Tyro medals are presentedeach year by the National Rifle As-sociation to the winners of the nationwide postal rifle championships. TheBeaver freshmen met some of thebest teams of the country in thisseries, including American LegionClubs, amateur clubs and teams fromother schools and colleges. The Amer-ican Legion Unit of San Francisco,California was barely nosed out bythe Frosh by a margin of one point.Gordon L. Foote, the fifth member ofthe team was not present at the cere-monies.

Varsity Banquet SoonThe final chapter in this season's

history will be written when the vars-ity rifle team meets on May 14th atthe American House to hold its an-nual banquet. The team this year hasconcluded one of its most successfulseasons ever, and has turned the long-est string of wins of any Technologyathletic team.

For the first time in several years,a baseball team composed of Tech un-dergraduates is playing a regularschedule of games this spring. Theteam does not officially represent theInstitute, for any athletic team mustcarry on by itself without financialhelp from the school for two or threeseasons before official recognition andmonetary assistance are granted.

Accordingly the team plays underthe name of the Cambridge Colleg-'ians, with its eligibility rules the sameas those for Tech varsity sports.

To date two games have been play-ed, with both having been victories forthe opponents. Last Saturday LowellTextile, one of the better collegeteams in this vicinity routed the Col-legians, 19-0. Then on Monday theTech players travelled to Harvardwhere they were defeated by the jun-ior varsity team of that university bya 14-8 score. Saturday's downfall wasdue mainly to weak pitching and poorhitting, but at Monday night's prac-tice, both of 'these departments werecredited with good performances,while the fielding fell down badly.

Five Games LeftFive games remain on the schedule,

three coming next week. Boston Uni-versity and Tufts junior varsities andNortheastern will be met in thatorder.

In general Tech teams are not verysuccessful in the matter of wins andlosses, the measure of success being

Ithe interest aroused in the particularsport. For this reason the question ofrecognition of baseball in the futureas a varsity sport at the Institutewill be decided, mot on how manygames the Collegians win, but on theextent and the continuance of the in-terest in the team.

shoulder matches, and of these theyhave won 26, and lost only three. Inthe postal matches, they have gonethrough the entire series without asingle loss. All these victories havebeen earned through superior skill ofmarksmanship over teams of repute.In the shoulder to shoulder matches,the men have stacked up againstNortheastern, Harvard, Syracuse,West Point, U. S. Coast Guard Acad-emy, N. Y. U., Yale, Bowdoin, Nor-wich and a score of other college rifleteams, not to include the CharlestownMarines Unit, the Boston Yankee Di-vision Club, and other amateur or-ganizations. To show the keen compe-tition met in these matches, it is in-teresting to note that three of thevictories were won by a margin ofthree points or less.

In addition to a successful seasonin dual meet competition, the teamhas acquitted itself well in varioussectional and national competitions.The team placed first in the New Eng-

M. I. T.'s lacrosse team bowed be-fore the superior stickwork of theBoston Lacrosse Club, 11 to 6, Wed-nesday afternoon on the "Coop" field.The Technology team, composed chief-ly of inexperienced men, warmed upslowly, scoring no points at all dur-ing the first half. In the second half,however, the Boston men began to tireand were outscored by Technology 6to 4. The game was purely one ofskill versus stamina. The Boston Clubmen were handicapped by their poorcondition while the Tech men lackedknowledge of the game. The Technol-ogy team so completely outplayedtheir weary opponents in the secondhalf, scoring 4 goals within a fewminutes of the last quarter, that, hadthe game not been cut short by lackof time, it is quite certain that M.I.T.would have tied, if not beaten, theClub.

The stars of the game were DickGidley and Bob Leventhal, each ofwhom scored two goals. Dave Mathiasand Jack Colby each scored one goal.Bulkley, Crummey, Mathias, Forster,Colby and Gidley, all played the en-tire game. The Technology team. hasshown that it is improving and hasgiven proof that it possesses all therequisites of 'a good team. If it con-tinues in this definite upward trend,the game with Williams College Sat-urday ought to be very close, with aTech victory in the offing. Those among our visitors who are interested in sports can watch Techathletes in four branches of sport in action this afternoon. The dual meet be-tween the Tech and Bates track teams will probably draw the greatest numberof spectators, chiefly because the track field is conveniently located and theprogram of events is varied. Coach Oscar Hedlund has some outstanding trackand field men on his team, and their performances will be well worth watch-ing. Jim Thomson, stellar high jumper and scorer of points in other fieldevents, is one of the most outstanding entries. Captain Mort Jenkins, stardistance runner, and Stan Johnson, Olympic prospect in the broad jump, givepromise of turning in fine performances today.

Many of you no doubt have heard of Anton Kishon, the Batesathlete who puts the shot for the Maine school. He will be here withthe visitors and is a sure bet for first place in his shot put event.Kishon has been breaking records for hurling the iron ball ever sincehis high school days. He is now a sophomore at Bates and may wellbe a world champion before his collegiate days are over, so an oppor-tunity to see him in action today should not be allowed to slip by.

Out on the river this afternoon the Tech crews will be participants in arowing regatta, together with Harvard, Cornell, and Syracuse. The Techvarsity, captained by smiling Al Mowatt from Swampscott, and stroked byGuy Haines, son of the Tech coach, is one of the lightest eights to representM. I. T. in years. What they lack in power, however, is to a great extentmade up in co-ordination.

On the opposite side of Massachusetts Avenue from the Institute,two other Engineer athletic teams are competing against opponentsfrom other colleges. A lacrosse team that has been steadily improvingto date will cross sticks with Williams. Many of our visitors un-doubtedly have never seen a lacrosse game. The sport, althoughpopular in high schools in other parts of the country, is entirelylimited to prep schools and colleges around here. Much of the roughplay of football and hockey enters into the game, but the ball usedis about the size of a tennis ball, and the method of carrying the ball

Themeet with the first two colleges washeld last Saturday in competition forthe Compton Cup, and in spite of lastminute changes in lineup due to sick-ness, and in spite of the unusuallylight weight of men on the boat, theBeavers provided one of the mostthrilling races ever witnessed in theCharles River Basin.

Compton Culp Race ThrillingPrinceton got away to a fast start

and led the Beavers by several feet,but the supposedly superior Tigercrew was not able to increase this leadeven after the half mile marker hadbeen passed. At this point there wasno open water between any of theboats. However, passing the HarvardBridge, the heavier Princeton boatslowly drew away while the Harvardboat, crept upDabreast of the Beavers.In the last few minutes, Harvardpulled away and followed Princetonacross the finish line while Tech madea gallant but futile effort to overtaketheir Crimlson rivals. The race wassurprisingly close, in spite of theweight handicap and the fact that GbuyHaines, son of Coach Guy Haines, wasforced out of his regular berth, asstroke by an attack of measles in theearly part of the week.

With Haines out, Captain Al Mow-att was hurriedly moved from No. 2to stroke, and in spite of the shortnotice, he acquitted himself well.

Toffill in Mowatt's place at 2, Will-ard Bixby, '35 was moved up, fromthe J. It's. "Bix" did such a good jobin the pinch that Coach Bill Haineshas given him a regular berth on theboat at number 2. Captain Mowatthas been permanently moved up tosix while Birch formerly at six hasgone back to the J. V.'s.

Other Crews InexperiencedLast Saturday Cornell was badly

beaten by the powerful Navy crew,being led across the finish by 3lengths. Syracuse has not as yet hadits first race, but nevertheless itschances for a victory loom up as best.Harvard has had only one meet thisyear, and that was the tri meet withTech and Princeton.

Time Trial FastOn last Thursday and Friday nights,

the varsity boat held time trial, theresults of which were not revealed.However, judging from the twinkle inBill Haines' eye, and from the generaloptimism around the boat house afterthe runs, the results must have beenquite satisfatcory to all parties con-cerned. Earlier this year, the boat;lowered the old varsity record overthe Henley distance, and with favor-able conditions this afternoon, Techmay chalk up a record for the 194mile course and provide a big upset.

Operation of a Pelton water wheel,in a glass-walled setting, will beshown on the first floor of the Steam.Laboratory today. This and other hy-draulic exhibits are grouped at thesouth end of the room.

Almost complete efficiency is shownby this wheel, for when the streamof water coming from the nozzlestrikes the buckets on the lower partof the wheel, nearly all of the energyof the water is transformed into me-chanical energy.

Dropping straight downward undergravity alone, the spent water has lostall the velocity it had before strikingthe buckets, and all the energy storedin it has been used in rotating thewheel.

Nozzles and WeirsFlow of water through nozzles andi

weirs is taking place just alongsidethis wheel. Water from the nozzlesstreams through the air and falls ingraceful curves, while the weirs meas-ure the amount of the flowing water.

A weir is a vertical metal plateplaced across the water channel, andcut so that there is a large notch inthe upper surface.

Perpetual motion? No, but it surelyseems to be close to it! And yet, thereis nothing so mysterious about thatminiature steam turbine running inthe Steam Lab., Building 3, withoutany apparent source of heat

It is all done by the heat of the at-mosphere, The "boiler" is heated bythe air of the Laboratory while thecondenser is cooled by the evaporationof water from a wick. Thus there iscreated a difference in temperature,to make the steam turbine work.

Vapor "Boiler"Water vapor is formed in the

"boiler", and passing through theglass piping, it comes to the smallturbine and sets that rotating. Thecooled condenser returns the watervapor to liquid water, and so keepsthe vapor passing through the tur-bine.

This unusual power plant was loan-ed to the Institute for Open House bythe Cochrane Steam Specialty Co.

I A collection of 37 marine pencilsketches by the late William Bradford,presented to the museum last year byCharles H. Taylor, publisher of theBoston Globe, is now on permanent ex-hibition there. Bradford, a native ofNew Bedford, began his distinguishedcareer as marine artist by paintingships in the harbor at Lynn. He madeseveral trips into the far north tosketch and study, and his representta-tions of ice floes and icebergs havebeen exhibited both here and abroad.

A new model was added to the col-lection early last fall by Professor J.R. Jack. It is an Elizabethan Gal-leon, representing one of the largerships of the English fleet which de-feated the Spanish Armada in 1588.The scale of the model is 1Y, inch toone foot. The principal data for themodel was obtained from manuscriptsbequeathed by Samuel Pepys to Mag-dalene College, Cambridge, England.

Other models, rich in color and ac-curate in detail, include the SantaMaria, the Constitution and theGuerriere, the Mayflower, the Monitorand the Merrimac, in addition to sev-eral unsuual vessels seldom seensuch as the several kinds of warshipswhich were scrapped during theWorld War before they were ever putinto service.

tically every field of study, includingseveral aviation exhibits. HaskellGordon will -show visitors what aresaid to be the world's smallest air-plane models. These reproductionsare so tiny that they must be viewedthrough a microscope. In addition,there will be numerous other planemodels and one reproduction of a com-plete flying field

Francis W. Haggerty, who is stu-dent chairman in charge of the fresh-man exhibit, will show a marine dis-play featuring the subject of whaling.Completing the marine exhibit, How-ard Lawrence of Upper Montclair,N. J., will show a sextant and com-pass, as well as other nautical de-vices.

Among the radio exhibits will beone by Fred Lamb. Lamb, who spendshis summers as a radio operator inthe Naval Reserve Corps, will showa complete transmitter.

Photography will also occupy an im-portant position. Several studentswill show photographic processes,while others will display some oftheir outstanding pictures. Amongthis class of exhibitors will be pho-tographers from Technology's under-graduate publications.

Not all of the exhibits will be strict-ly scientific, for some of the studentshave used classical sources. Accord-ingly, the Open House guest will seea complete Elizabethan theatre model.Alwyn Marston will show a modelstagecoach which he designed andconstructed.

Several collections will round outthe freshman display. Among theseare an excellent group of butterflies,to be shown by Abner Towers. An-other interesting collection includesseveral varieties of bacteria, whichwill be shown by means of shadowII

The river hydraulics laboratory haspreviously made model studies notonly on the Cape Cod Canal but onother projects such as the Connecti-cut River.
