MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Dear Parents/Guardians,
School Council
On Wednesday 20th March we held our annual election of office bearers at
our school council Annual General Meeting. Our President for 2019 is
Jaswinder Kaur, the Vice President is Melanie Flannery and the Treasurer
is Haider Khan. Other council members include Anh Le, Tan Do, Zainab
Mahmood and Jessie Nguyen. I congratulate the office bearers on their
election and thank all parent members for their support and commitment to
the school.
Harmony Day Celebrations
On March 21st the school was awash in a sea of orange and bright colours
as some beautiful cultural costumes were on display. A huge thank you to
the students, families and staff for their support of this important event.
There was some yummy food shared from many different cultures. Did
you know that within our school community there are approximately 33
different languages spoken by our families. As a school we celebrate
diversity and embrace our differences to unite as one. The tragedy in New
Zealand highlights the need for us to continually reinforce the notions of
tolerance, respect and compassion.
School Corridors
We as a staff, are concerned about the number of people in our corridors
during the school day as this is a safety concern for us and our students.
We ask that all visitors report to the office and sign in before going to
classrooms during class time and that all families remain outside the
buildings at the end of the day when waiting to collect your child/ren.
This is to avoid distractions to the students whilst packing up at the end of
the day (it gets quite noisy) and to alleviate congestion (an OH&S issue)
when students leave at the end of each day. Parents may wait at line up
areas or the canteen space to avoid disruptions to class and the office staff.
Teachers of younger classes will walk the students outside to meet you.
We ask for your cooperation with this matter, if parents wish to see the classroom teacher this can be done
before or after school, when class has been dismissed for the day.

NAPLAN Assessments for Years 3 and 5 students
The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is an
annual assessment for all students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. NAPLAN assesses the
sorts of skills that are essential for every child to progress through school and life
such as reading, writing, spelling and numeracy. The assessments are taken
nationwide in May each year. NAPLAN is not a pass or fail type of assessment ,
but rather shows how individual students are progressing in numeracy and literacy
skills against the national standards for all Australian children. We ask parents to
support the school by ensuring their children are at school on the specified days.
All students are expected to participate however parents may request to withdraw
their child for certain reasons. Please speak to your child’s teacher if you have any concerns. Students can
practise over the holidays by searching on Google for the NAPLAN public site.

School finishes early on Friday 5th April for the school holidays.

SCHOOL NEWS AWESOME COMMENDATION
To Noly Sensei,
はじめまして! My name is Emi Narasaki. I am a Japanese teacher at St Albans Secondary College.
I just wanted to email you to congratulate and commend you for your excellent work teaching Japanese at
the primary school level. From my understanding, language teachers are given very limited hours to work
with students in primary schools. However, every year all of your former students have an incredibly strong
understanding of Japanese. It is easy to identify which year 7s are former students of St Albans Heights as
they all know their hiragana and have a keen interest in Japan.
I look forward to teaching more of your former students in the future!
Kind regards,
Emi Narasaki
