Rolls-Royce and Singapore Airlines sign Trent 1000 and Trent 700 contracts

Rolls-Royce has signed contracts with Singapore Airlines at the Singapore Airshow covering Trent 1000 and Trent 700 engines.Singapore Airlines formally confirmed a uS$1.7bn order for Trent 1000 engines to power 19 Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft, which will be covered by Rolls-Royce’s flagship TotalCare® engine support service. The order, originally an-nounced in February 2017, was in addition to an order for Trent 1000 engines for 50 aircraft, made by SIA Group, in 2013.The signing comes as the airline prepares for the entry into service of its first 787-10 aircraft pow-ered by the latest version of the Trent 1000, the Trent 1000 TEN (Thrust, Efficiency, New Technol-ogy). Singapore Airlines also signed a contract for SelectCare™ support for Trent 700 engines that power 11 Airbus A330 aircraft.SelectCare is a fixed-price overhaul agreement that allows customers to benefit from Rolls-Royce’s engine health monitoring and after-market capability, while providing cost certainty and plan fleet servicing. It is one of a range of Rolls-Royce CareServices available through its CareStore.

Eviation targets 2021 for “Alice” electric airplane to enter into service

Israeli venture capital-backed Eviation has set a date of 2021 for its “Alice” 9-seat electric com-

muter aircraft to enter into service. The com-pany has just signed a deal with South Korea’s Kokam as its battery supplier. Eviation is one of a number of companies looking to produce small electric aircraft that will consume less power, have lower emissions, be quieter than and have lower operating costs than its conventionally fueled counterparts.Part of the reason for the tie up with Kokam for battery supply is the South Korean manufacturer

can adapt its production processes to meet with Eviation’s specific needs yet on an initial low-volume scale.“If I would go today to Samsung or Panasonic or LG Chem or Tesla for that matter and say I need a different cell size, they will probably laugh be-cause the number of cells we are going to buy is not significant enough to start the design pro-cess,” Eviation CEO Omer Bar-yohay told Reuters in a phone interview.

Orders and deliveries – Boeing and Airbus

Airbus opened its 2018 business activity with orders in January for 20 A320 Family jetliners – taking overall bookings for this best-selling single-aisle product line to 14,135 and delivered 27 single-aisle and widebody aircraft during the month, bringing the company’s total deliveries since its creation to nearly 11,000. Boeing generated 28 orders in January, all 737s and delivered 44 aircraft during the month.

“Norwegian is far better positioned for 2018, with stronger bookings, a growing network of intercontinental routes complementing our vast European network and not least, a better staffing situation. Our major global expansion reaches its peak in the second half of 2018, when 32

of our 42 Dreamliners on order will have been put into service,” Kjos continued.

In February, the carrier announced it would continue its global expan-sion by launching the uK’s first low fare route to South America, with a non-stop service from London Gatwick to Buenos Aires.

WEEKLY AVIATION HEADLINES

Eviation is planning to fly the Alice demonstra-tor on its maiden flight by the end of this year, with the first public display aimed for the Paris Airshow in mid-2019, he said. Moving to com-mercial production after that would require rais-ing around $100 million of capital, Bar-yohay also confirmed.Electric airplanes are currently relying on improve-ments in battery technology, which is why smaller aircraft will take to the skies long before large commercial jets. The battery in Alice will have 9,400 cells distributed throughout the aircraft in-cluding the ceiling, floor and wings, and will weigh 3.8 tons, which equates to approximately 60 per-cent of the maximum takeoff weight.Batteries are heavy and store far less energy per kilogram than jet fuel, though the ratio is con-tinuously improving each year, allowing electric cars and airplanes longer ranges than they had previously.Eviation’s Alice airplane should have a range of up to 650 nautical miles (1200 kilometers), roughly 15 percent further than a similar-sized conventional Cessna Caravan. The cost is ex-pected to be around uS$2 million-plus, similar to the Cessna, but will offer lower fuel and main-tenance costs, according to Bar-yohay.

BAE Systems Regional Aircraft wins fleet support contract from Braathens Region-al Airlines

BAE Systems Regional Aircraft has secured a three-year Fleet Support Services contract from Swedish carrier Braathens Regional Airlines (BRA) covering a total of 12 Avro RJs operated by the airline. The scope of the contract includes a renewal of

the long-standing JetSpares customized rotable spares rate-per-flying-hour support agreement, for which BRA is the longest-standing customer, having been enrolled on this service since 1996. The new agreement covers 640 parts per air-craft over the 12 aircraft fleet (10 RJ100s and two RJ85s) and is for a minimum of 38,000 fleet flying hours across the three-year period. Also signed was an agreement for rate-per-fly-ing-hour coverage for the Honeywell GTCP36-150M Auxiliary Power unit (APu) that is fitted to eight Avro RJ100s in the BRA fleet.Working with an established overhaul supplier, Regional Aircraft provides BRA with a guar-

launch customer order for its Cair™ VIP Inflight Humidification system from Jet Aviation for one Boeing BBJ MAX 8. This completion will feature increased humidity in the entire aircraft cabin which requires support from three humidifi-ers. This award is CTT Systems’ 86th VIP order for Airbus ACJs/Boeing BBJs. CTT’s humidifier maintains air humidity in the human comfort zone of approx. 20 percent Relative Humidity. A higher humidity on long-haul flights reduces dry air-related problems (e.g. fatigue, jet-lag, red eyes, dry skin, spread of viral diseases) and improves wellbeing and sleep. The humidifier is based on evaporative cooling technology and uses a method that effectively precludes the transfer of bacteria. The Cair™ VIP IFH system offers total anti-condensation protection.

BA Systems to modernize head-up displays for United Arab Emirates F-16 fleet

BAE Systems has been selected by Lockheed Mar-tin to modernize head-up displays (HuD) on F-16 aircraft for the united Arab Emirates (uAE) Armed Forces, replacing the fleet’s analog system with advanced digital technology. The HuD, which sits directly in a pilot’s line of sight, is a see-through display that presents real-time, flight-critical in-formation without obstructing his or her view of the outside world. BAE Systems will use its cut-ting-edge Digital Light Engine (DLE) technology to implement a HuD upgrade that integrates seam-lessly into the F-16’s existing HuD space, requiring no changes to the aircraft, cabling, or computing. The advancement will remove the outdated cath-ode ray tube image source and replace it with a digital projector. The fully digital system has the potential to re-duce life-cycle costs by 20% and offers at least

Revenues were uS$5.0bn with EBIT margins before special items of 8.4%.For the fourth quarter, deliveries reached 44 units, including a strong mix of Challenger and Global family aircraft, representing 29 and 13 de-liveries respectively.Commercial Aircraft’s financial performance for 2017 was marked by the continued production ramp-up of the C Series aircraft program. As an-nounced in the third-quarter financial results, engine delivery delays from Pratt & Whitney im-pacted the C Series aircraft deliveries, particularly in the fourth quarter. While revenues reached uS$2.4bn, in line with its guidance, the EBIT loss before special items at uS$377m compared fa-vorably relative to expectations.

Airbus posts full year 2017 results

Airbus has reported 2017 revenues of €66.8bn (2016: €66.6bn) with higher aircraft deliveries offset by a reduction in revenues of around €2bn from the perimeter changes. Commercial Aircraft revenues rose by 3.5% with record deliveries of 718 aircraft (2016: 688 aircraft) comprising 558 A320 Family aircraft, 78 A350 XWBs, 67 A330s and 15 A380s. Helicopters’ revenues were slightly lower with deliveries of 409 units (2016: 418 units). Revenues at Defense and Space reflect-ed the division’s perimeter changes of around €1.7bn but were 7% higher on a comparable basis driven mainly by military aircraft.EBIT Adjusted increased to €4,253m (2016: €3,955m).Commercial Aircraft’s EBIT Adjusted of €3,554m (2016: €2,811m) reflected the strong delivery performance supported by improved foreign ex-change rates.Helicopters’ EBIT Adjusted declined to € 337m (2016: €350m) but was broadly stable on a com-parable basis. Lower deliveries, an unfavorable mix, and lower commercial flight hours in services were compensated by transformation efforts which have globally supported the division’s com-petitiveness in a challenging market. GE Aviation receives KC-46 Tanker Flight Management System approval

GE Aviation has received approval for its flight management system from the Boeing KC-46 tanker program. The approval is a result of Boeing securing an amended type certification from the u.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) for the 767-2C aircraft configuration of the KC-46 aircraft. GE Aviation’s flight management system and com-munications management applications (CMA) are part of the KC-46 mission control system, which manages the aircraft mission. This is the first aircraft that GE Aviation has re-ceived FAA approval for its flight management system integrated with its own CMA. The CMAtakes the place of the traditional communication management unit (CMu) on the aircraft by pro-viding the communications management func-tion as a hosted application running on the flight management computer. The CMA provides fullaircraft communications addressing and report-ing system (ACARS) and aeronautical telecom-munications network (ATN) data link communi-cations between the aircraft, as well as Air Traffic Control and the mission control center. By provid-ing the FMS and CMA/ATN capability as software applications, GE has provided a more integrated user interface and eliminated the traditional CMu hardware on the aircraft. In order to receive the certification, Boeing’s team, which included Commercial Airplanes andDefense, Space & Security personnel, completed a series of analyses and laboratory, ground andflight tests that focused on the aircraft’s funda-mental capabilities including avionics, auto-flight and environmental control systems, as well as itsnew fuel system. The resulting data validated that all systems operated as intended. The ATC is one of two FAA airworthiness certifi-cations required for the KC-46 program. A com-bined Boeing/Air Force team has been concur-rently completing Supplemental Type Certificate (STC) work, which encompasses the military sys-tems that are installed on the 767-2C to make ita tanker.

€872m (2016: €1,002m), reflecting the perimeter changes but was broadly stable on a comparable basis.A total of 181 A320neo Family aircraft were deliv-ered, up from 68 during 2016.Supplier Pratt & Whitney introduced new engine fixes in the fourth quarter which have been certi-fied. A new issue has arisen recently, the impact of which is under assessment with respect to 2018 deliveries. CFM International meanwhile ex-perienced some maturity issues in 2017 on some batches of the LEAP-1A engine. The A320neo ramp-up remains challenging and requires that the engine suppliers deliver in line with commit-ments. On the A350, good progress was made with the industrial ramp-up, recurring cost con-vergence and the reduction of outstanding work in the Final Assembly Line, which has been signifi-cantly reduced. The A350 program is preparing to reach the targeted monthly production rate of 10 by the end of 2018. Meanwhile, Emirates Airline’s latest order provides increased visibility on the A380 program for the next ten years to come.Net income increased to €2,873m (2016: €995m) after the EBIT Adjustments, with earnings per share of €3.71 (2016: €1.29). vice of four weekly flights from London Gatwick to Buenos Aires Ezeiza International Airport will offer passengers more choice and low fares.Gatwick Airport CEO Stewart Wingate said: “The launch of Norwegian’s first ever South American route is another exciting landmark in Gatwick’s ongoing mission to connect the uK to more and more long-haul destinations. The airport now of-fers 63 long-haul connections – with many, includ-ing Buenos Aires, operated by low-cost carriers – making Gatwick the busiest departure airport for low-cost long-haul services in the world.

IFS, the global enterprise applications company, has reported that Air Transport Services Group (ATSG), a provider of medium wide-body air-craft leasing, air cargo transportation and related services, has selected IFS Maintenix to deliver comprehensive fleet maintenance management across its two cargo airline subsidiaries – ABX Air and Air Transport International – and its aircraft leasing subsidiary, Cargo Aircraft Management. As one of the largest owners and operators of converted Boeing 767 freighter aircraft, ATSG has experienced strong growth in recent years. To meet evolving operational demands, ATSG’s airline subsidiaries – ABX Air and Air Transport In-ternational (ATI) – and its aircraft leasing subsidi-ary – Cargo Aircraft Management (CAM) – sought a modern, scalable software solution that could drive greater standardization and maintenance management process efficiencies.Following a market review, ATSG’s subsidiaries selected IFS Maintenix to deliver a full suite of engineering, planning and line maintenance func-tionality, helping ATSG optimize the maintenance management for its combined fleet.

Investors will be keeping a keen eye on how air-lines approach the dual problems of rising fuel costs and labor costs this year. Last December the International Air Transport Association (IATA) highlighted these two elements, which are air-lines’ highest expenditures, as the major chal-lenge for 2018. In 2016, labor costs accounted for 22% of airlines’ costs and fuel 21%. For 2018, pre-dictions reveal an expected 30.9% cost for labor and 20.5% for fuel. With the fluctuating nature of fuel prices, back in 2013 those figures were 33% for fuel and 18% for labor. It should also be noted that labor costs are traditionally higher in Europe and North America than in Asia, for which fuel remains the higher cost. Exacerbating the current challenge of labor costs is a shortage of workers on a global scale, and in particular many airlines are struggling with a pilot shortage as they look to expand their fleets. According to IATA Chief Econ-omist Brian Pearce, “As airlines have been mak-ing profit, the workforce has got market power, so that is pushing up the cost of labor.” IATA has

INDuSTRy PEOPLEalso forecast a hike in unit costs, measured as an airline’s cost to operate each kilometer and seat flown, from a rise of 1.7 percent in 2017 to 4.3 percent in 2018.In the united States, investors are concerned that the three largest carriers – American, Delta and United – could well be heading for a price war just as higher costs from pay increases agreed last year start to take effect. Airlines must now look even more closely at those areas where poten-tial savings can be made. According to aviation consultant John Strickland, “The most successful airline managements are the ones that have been very cost-focused every day – not just on staff costs but on aircraft costs, airport charges, distri-bution costs and so on.”

She is 120 centimeters tall, with sparkling, round eyes and a pleasant voice: Starting February 15, “Josie Pepper” the robot will be answering questions for passengers in Munich Airport’s Terminal 2. Whether they need directions to their gate or want to stop at a certain restaurant or shop – Josie Pepper will look them in the eyes and give them a prompt answer. With the rollout of Josie Pepper, Munich Airport and Lufthansa are breaking new ground: It is the first-ever test of a humanoid robot equipped with artificial intelligence at a German airport. For the next few weeks, Josie Pepper will welcome travelers to the non-public area of Terminal 2, which is jointly operated by Munich Airport and Lufthansa. In her initial deploy-ment, Josie Pepper, who speaks English, will await passengers at the top of the ramp leading to the shuttle connecting the main terminal to the satellite building. This test phase will be used to show whether Josie Pepper is accepted by passengers.Josie Pepper’s “brain” contains a high-performance processor with a WLAN internet access. This creates a connection to a cloud service where speech is processed, interpreted and linked to the airport data. What sets the system apart: When this robot type speaks, it does not just deliver pre-defined texts. With its ability to learn, it answers each question individually. Just like a “real” brain, the system gets steadily better at combining questions with the relevant information to provide more precise replies.IBM Watson Internet of Things (IoT) cloud-based, artificial intelligence technologies are behind Josie Pepper’s capabilities. Pepper was developed by the French company SoftBank Robotics. The lady robot was given the name “Josie” by the staff of Munich Airport and Lufthansa when she arrived at the airport.
