Norway, with it´s population of only 5.2 million people, organise an estimated number of 900 festivals a year. Only 250 of these are arts and cultural festivals.

This brochure presents 72 of these festival organisers, which are all members of Norway Festivals - Norway’s only genre-wide, umbrella organisation for professional festival organisers.

ARTS FESTIVAL OF NORTH NORWAYThe Arts Festival of North Norway was first held in 1965 and celebrates its unique location, at the heart of Arctic Norway. The festival takes place in June, the time of the midnight sun, and is a meeting point between the far north and artists, bands and ensembles from around the globe. www.festspillnn.no

BERGEN INTERNATIONAL FESTIVALBergen International Festival began in 1953 and has focused on featuring prominent international and Norwegian artists in all the fields of the arts. The festival takes place every year over 15 days at the end of May and has over 200 events. www.fib.no

DALANE CULTURAL FESTIVALThe festival has been taking place in and around Sokndal, Lund, Eigersund and Bjerkreim since 1995. Its commitment is to local culture and giving local talent both the inspiration and knowledge to produce new cultural activities in and for the local community after the festival has finished. www.dalanekulturfestival.no

NORDLAND MUSIC FESTIVALNordland Music Festival started in Bodø in 1980 under the name St. Olaf’s days, and as an Olsok celebration. The festival changed name to the Nordland Music Festival in 1987. It is distinguished by the concerts unconventional locations and is held annually, in the second week of August. www.musikkfestuka.no

THE NORWEGIAN REVUE FESTIVALThe Norwegian Revue Festival is a biennial event and began in 1987. Set in the highlands of Norway, 100 revue groups, from Finnmark in the north to Agder in the South, take part in the competition that has become known as The Norwegian Masters in Revue. www.revy.no

OSLO MELA FESTIVALThe Mela festival was held in Oslo for the first time in 2001. The festival attracts around 300,000 people every year, and features an incomparable line-up of diverse expressionist artists from Africa, Asia, America and Europe. www.melafestivalen.no

THE OSLO MEDIEVAL FESTIVALThe Oslo Medieval Festival was first held in 1994, with primary aim of highlighting awareness that Oslo city has its roots in the Middle Ages. It is an entertaining festival for the whole family, focusing on Oslo’s exciting and diverse history. www.oslomiddelalderfestival.org

THE SAMI EASTER FESTIVALEaster was traditionally the time of year when the reindeer-herding Sami gathered in the towns of Karasjok and Kautokeino to celebrate the end of winter. Today, the Sami Grand Prix and the reindeer race are the highlights; other events include concerts, performances and exhibitions. www.samieasterfestival.com

ST.OLAV´S FESTIVALEver since Olav Haraldsson was made a saint in the Middle Ages, Trondheim has been an important visiting site for pilgrims. The St. Olav Festival continues to highlight Trondheim as a place for inclusive and embracing values. www.olavsfestdagene.no

STOPPESTED VERDEN - INTERNATIONAL CHILDRENS FESTIVALStoppested Verden is an international cultural festival for children and young people. The festival creates meeting places between different cultures, peoples and generations. www.stoppestedverden.no

THE NORWEGIAN YOUTH FESTIVALS OF ARTThe objective of the Norwegian Youth Festivals of Art (UKM) is to stimulate and spotlight young people’s creativity and cultural activity. UKM organises 400 separate festivals for youths between 13 and 20, that all culminate in the national festival in Trondheim. www.ukm.no

NARVIK WINTER FESTIVALEvery year 200 different events are carried out as part of the Winter Festival offering cultural events, concerts, theatre, art exhibitions and street stalls. Today, the Winter Festival is a contemporary festival with an exciting programme, which features Narvik’s cultural history. www.vinterfestuka.no

VESTFOLD INTERNATIONAL FESTIVALVestfold International Festival reveals and revels in the region’s cultural heritage through music and other art forms. Its hallmark is the jagged, rocky slopes along the coast of Vestfold county which, with their informal and sunny setting, serve as festival arenas.www.vestfoldfestspillene.no

ELVERUM INTERNATIONAL FESTIVALElverum International Festival began in 1974, in connection with a seminar for the Norwegian National Youth Orchestra. The Norwegian Youth Orchestra is the mainstay of the festival and gives grand orchestral concerts. The festival focuses on classical music, but features also pop, jazz and other genres. www.fie.no

ST. OLAVS FESTIVAL IN SARPSBORGThe St. Olav Festival is an annual festival in Sarpsborg, which has been arranged around Olsok (July 29th) since the 1960s. It is based on Olav Haraldsson (St. Olav) who founded the city. Olavsdagene are hosted by Sarpsborg Municipality in cooperation with a number of local organisations. www.olavsdagene.no

GLOGER FESTIVALThe Gloger Festival in Kongsberg has its origins in the newly restored baroque organ in Kongsberg Church built by the 1700s major organ builder, Gottfried Heinrich Gloger, from Germany. Kongsberg Church, with its unique atmosphere, stands at the centre of the celebrations. www.glogerfestspillene.no

THE HARDANGER MUSIC FESTIVALThe Hardanger Music Festival features top level artists in a unique setting. The performances take place at scenic locations along the fjord. The programme offers a wide artistic variety with particular emphasis on classical chamber music and Norwegian folk music. www.hardangermusikkfest.no

ILIOS CONTEMPORARY MUSIC FESTIVALIn its more than 20 years of existence, Ilios has become one of the most established European festivals of New Music. The festival showcases a huge variety of contemporary music, occasionally in collaboration with other art forms, in a mixture of established concert venues and unconventional spaces. www.ilios.no

INTERNATIONAL CHAMBER MUSIC FESTIVAL STAVANGERThe International Chamber Music Festival in Stavanger was held for the first time in 1991 and the programme is composed of international and national soloists and ensembles. www.icmf.no

GLOPPEN MUSIC FESTIVALGloppen Music Festival started as a network and a meetingplace for musicians in 2003. The festival celebrated its 10th anniversary in 2013. KIRSTEN FLAGSTAD FESTIVALThe Kirsten Flagstad festival is a classical music festival honouring the world famous Norwegian soprano Kirsten Flagstad, who has been called “the Voice of the Century”. The festival takes place in the city of Hamar, where Flagstad was born in 1895. www.flagstad-festival.no

LOFOTEN INTERNATIONAL CHAMBER MUSIC FESTIVALThe Lofoten International Chamber Music Festival began in 2004, and alternates every second year with the Lofoten Piano Festival. Both feature concerts and lectures of the highest quality. www.lofotenfestival.com

THE NORWEGIAN YOUTH CHAMBER MUSIC FESTIVALThe Norwegian Youth Chamber Music Festival is a festival where renowned artists and young musicians from all over Europe perform in diverse combinations. The Festival is spread over the west coast of Norway and in Oslo. www.nycmf.com

OSLO CHAMBER MUSIC FESTIVALThe Oslo Chamber Music Festival presents music from medieval times to the present day. OSLO INTERNATIONAL CHURCH MUSIC FESTIVALThe Oslo International Church Music Festival is held for 10 days each March. The festival’s concerts are held in the churches of Norway’s capital city, with Oslo Cathedral as the main venue. The festival explores the meeting of tradition and innovation in music.www.oicmf.no

RØROS WINTER CHAMBER MUSIC FESTIVALIn the middle of winter, and in the middle of the UNESCO World Heritage town of Røros, music and people meet to experience exotic, intimate and generous musical adventures given by world-class performers in a chamber music festival like no other. www.vinterfestspill.no

THE FARTEIN VALEN MUSIC FESTIVALThe Festival is devoted to composer Fartein Valen, his life and music, and is directly linked to the “Fartein Valens landscape”, i.e. the countryside was made into music. THE NORTHERN LIGHTS FESTIVALThe first Northern Lights Festival was held in 1988, and was based on classical music. Nowadays, the Northern Lights Festival’s aims to be a significant arctic music festival that features quality music and dance from across the musical fields. www.nordlysfestivalen.no

THE QUEEN SONJA INT. MUSIC COMPETITIONThe Queen Sonja International Music Competition is a competition for young singers that takes place every two years in Oslo. The competition was held for the first time in 1988. The competition programme includes competition, masterclasses, concerts and social events. www.qsimc.no

THE RISØR FESTIVAL OF CHAMBER MUSICThe Risør Chamber Music Festival began in 1991 with the aim to hold an annual chamber music festival where both important classical music and more contemporary repertoires would be featured.www.kammermusikkfest.no

OSLO OPERA FESTIVALThe Oslo Opera Festival - Opera to the people – dispels the myth that opera is boring and difficult. The audience gets to experience opera in the Music & Stage House, a mini opera house, in concert halls and in locations all around the city. www.operatilfolket.no

TRONDHEIM CHAMBER MUSIC FESTIVALEstablished in 1996, the festival developed into one of the most innovative chamber music festivals in the world. The Trondheim International Chamber Music Competition internationalise the festival and also, promote international festival composers on an annual basis. www.kamfest.no

ULTIMA OSLO CONTEMPORARY MUSIC FESTIVALUltima is Scandinavia’s largest contemporary music festival and, since 1991, has been a key arena for contemporary music and related art forms. VALDRES SUMMER SYMPHONYThe Valdres Summer Symphony is a classical music festival with international musicians, including the largest course of study for young, classical talent in Northern Europe. HAMSUN DAYS IN HAMARØYAuthor and Nobel Price Laureate, Knut Hamsun, grew up in beautiful Hamarøy in Nordland. Since the first event in 1982, the Hamsun Days have contributed to spreading knowledge of Knut Hamsun’s life and works, and his close connection to Hamarøy. www.knuthamsun.no

KAPITTEL - STAVANGER INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL OF LITERATURE AND FREEDOM OF SPEECHKapittel discovers and reveals connections between the arts and the world, and protects the fundamental right to freedom of expression. At Kapittel you encounter new literature, expressions and debates about current issues. www.kapittel.com

THE BJØRNSON FESTIVALThe festival is named in honour of the Nobel Prize in Literature laureate Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson, who was raised in the area. The festival offers a programme of seminars, art exhibitions and courses that promote interest in literature and writing. www.bjornsonfestivalen.no

THE LITERATURE WEEK IN VESTFOLDVestfold County has run the festival since 2009. The main focus of the festival is to bring literature and writers to all municipalities in Vestfold. THE NORWEGIAN FESTIVAL OF LITERATUREThe Norwegian Festival of Literature of is the largest such festival in the Nordic countries based on non-capital values. Its main focus is Norwegian contemporary literature and the interaction between literature and society. www.litteraturfestival.no

FØRDE TRADITIONAL AND WORLD MUSIC FESTIVALScandinavia`s largest festival for accoustic trad/world/folk. First held in 1990, the festival takes place in the first half of July. JØRN HILME FESTIVALThe Jørn Hilme Festival was held for the first time in 1960 and is the oldest folk music festival in Norway. From the beginning, the Jørn Hilme Festival has been an event combining kappleik (a competition in folk music and dance), concerts, theatre and dance. www.hilme.no

THE NORTH SEA FESTIVALThe North Sea Festival in Farsund is an international music festival that focuses on the traditional music from the countries surrounding the North Sea. THE NORWEGIAN COUNTRY MUSIC FESTIVALThe Norwegian Country Music Festival is staged annually at Breim in Gloppen, featuring country music from all over the world. The first festival was held in 1995 and has since developed a bigger stage and festival area in connection with the Norwegian Fjord Horse farm. www.norskcountrytreff.no

THE NORWEGIAN OLD TIME DANCE COMPETITIONThis is a competition in recent and traditional forms of folk music such as waltz, reinlender and polka. About 500 musicians partake in this festival, which is hosted in different areas around Norway. www.landsfestivalen.no

THE NORWEGIAN TRADITIONAL MUSIC AND DANCE COMPETITIONA nearly 100-year-old competition features the oldest forms of fiddling, singing and dancing in Norway. Around 1,500 amateurs and professionals compete, and concerts are held. www.landskappleiken.no

RIDDU RIDDU FESTIVALRiddu Riđđu is an international festival, in Kåfjord, that focuses on Sámi and Indigenous peoples’ art and culture. It has a diverse programme for children, youths and adults; such as music, films, seminars, workshops, art, literature and theatre.www.riddu.no

THE NORWEGIAN FOLK MUSIC WEEKFolkmusic Week started in 1976 and gathers an audience of several thousand each year. Its aim is to highlight the broad spectrum within Norwegian folk music and dance by providing a stage for professionals and amateurs. KONGSBERG JAZZ FESTIVALThe Kongsberg Jazz festival is an international event held annually in Kongsberg, Norway, since 1964. It is regarded as one of Scandinavia’s most innovative jazz festivals, featuring internationally acclaimed artists and some of Norway’s finest artists. www.kongsberg-jazzfestival.no

LILLEHAMMER JAZZ FESTIVALDølajazz is a jazz festival held annually in October, in the town of Lillehammer. The organisation was established in 1977, and the first festival was held in 1978. Dølajazz is an intimate, contemporary jazz festival, with its main focus on young Nordic talent. www.dolajazz.no

MAIJAZZ - STAVANGER INT. JAZZ FESTIVALMaiJazz, established in 1989, features both international jazz artists and the best of national and local jazz. It showcases unique collaborations with the Stavanger Symphony Orchestra and the University of Stavanger. www.maijazz.no

MOLDE INTERNATIONAL JAZZ FESTIVALMolde International Jazz Festival or Moldejazz (first held in 1961 in Molde) takes place annually in July, and is known as one of the oldest jazz festivals in Europe. It originated from the local Storyville Jazz Club and features a wide range of jazz and related music. www.moldejazz.no

NOTODDEN BLUES FESTIVALNotodden Blues Festival is the largest blues music festivals in Scandinavia. It has been running annually since 1988. The festival has received the international award “Keeping The Blues Alive Award” for best international blues festival. www.bluesfest.no

SILDAJAZZ - HAUGESUND INTERNATIONAL JAZZ FESTIVALSildajazz is a jazz festival, which is held annually in the second weekend of August. The inaugural festival was in 1987. Both domestic and international artists participate at the festival. www.sildajazz.no

SEASIDE MUSIC & MISSION FESTIVALThe Seaside M&M Festival is the largest Christian Youth Festival in Northern Europe. The festival was held for the first time in 1981 and has featured contemporary international and national Christian artists. www.sginfo.no

TRONDHEIM JAZZ FESTIVALTrondheim Jazz festival is built around the exciting jazz scene in Trondheim and the world-renowned jazz course offered at the NTNU Department of Music. The festival mainly features exciting contemporary and innovative Scandinavian and European jazz. www.jazzfest.no

VARANGER FESTIVALVaranger Festival turns Vadsø into an oasis of music and rhythm The jazz festival was first held in 1982 and held annually in Vadsø. The festival is run by Vadsø Jazz Club, which is a member-based voluntary association. The festival mainly features musicians and artists from the Barents region. www.varangerfestivalen.no

VOSSA JAZZThe first Vossa Jazz took place in 1974 and its musical profile encompasses jazz, folk and world music. Vossa Jazz aims to stimulate interest in jazz and similar music forms both for listeners and active musicians. MARKET FOR PERFORMING ARTSThe Market for Performing Arts in Sandefjord is a unique national arena for the presentation, purchase and sale of professionally performing arts for children and young people. PORSGRUNN INTERNATIONAL THEATRE FESTIVALPIT features performing art from all over the world. The festival contains a professional programme with workshops and conferences, a programme for young audiences and a large number of performances, both indoors and out. www.pit.no

SHOWBOXShowbox was established in 2005, and since then the festival has become the largest performing arts festival for children and young people in Norway. The festival is also a forum for lectures, seminars, discussions and networking. www.showbox.no

THE PEER GYNT FESTIVALThe Peer Gynt Festival is one of Norway’s largest cultural festivals, celebrating Ibsen’s dramatic poem “Peer Gynt”. The theme is universal, and through the combination of Norwegian drama, music and nature the festival will entertain guests from all over the world. www.peergynt.no

STAMSUND INTERNATIONAL THEATRE FESTIVALSIT is a contemporary international oriented performing arts festival that aims to offer strong artistic experiences and reflections on art and life. The festival works with the international exchange of performing art. It is set in the small, lively fishing village of Stamsund in Lofoten. www.stamfest.no

THE ÅLESUND THEATRE FESTIVALThe Ålesund Theatre Festival, started in 1993, is aimed at a wide audience in the region. The Ålesund Theatre Festival emphasises a diversity of performing arts; classical drama, dance, puppetry, comedy, opera, stand up and performance art. www.hostscena.no

WINTER LIGHT FESTIVALNordland Theatre hosts the Winter Light Festival every year in February. The festival is one of the largest theatre festivals and cultural highlights in the middle of the dark season in the north of Norway.www.vinterlys.no

AMANDUS FILM FESTIVALThe Amandus film festival is a national film festival and competition for young filmmakers under 20 years of age. Over 600 directors and producers from across Norway attend courses, seminars and watch screenings of films made by and for youths. www.amandusfestivalen.no

KOSMORAMA TRONDHEIM INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVALThe Kosmorama Trondheim International Film Festival was established in 2004 and aims to strengthen the film industry and film in mid-Norway, and contribute to innovation at the intersection of culture and commerce. www.kosmorama.no

TROMSØ INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVALThe Tromsø International Film Festival is an annual festival held during the third week of January in Tromsø, Norway. The inaugural Tromsø International Film Festival was held in 1991. TIFF has five screening venues, including one outdoor snow cinema. www.tiff.no
