2 Northwood v Longlevens | Saturday 25th August 2018

Hello, and welcome back to Northwood Park this afternoon

as we start our annual pilgrimage on the Emirates FA Cup Road to Wembley. Welcome to our supporters new and old, and to all connected with Longlevens AFC; we trust they enjoy their stay with us and have a safe journey home later. Our “Road to Wembley” has been very short in recent times, just one game, to be precise, in each of the past two seasons! Long-time supporters will be aware that the Woods are still seeking their first appearance in the competition proper. Having been involved in the past at two other non-League clubs which have reached that nirvana, I can attest to the excitement and the money that such a cup-run brings – particularly as in one of those clubs, when the first round game is covered live on Sky TV! But, my point is, looking down the list of non-League clubs that have over the years reached the competition proper, any club can do it, given the luck of the draw. So why not Northwood this year? Or, indeed, Longlevens…Our visitors today compete in the Hellenic League, following promotion from the Gloucestershire County League in 2014, and although they have started this season slowly, they did win 1-0 at fellow Hellenic League outfit Holmer Green in the Extra Preliminary Round. They have scored goals in their opening games, and from scouting reports received, will prove a difficult opponent. We have had a good start to the Bostik League campaign, starting with the thrilling 4-3 victory against Tooting & Mitcham United last time out here, after trailing 1-3 with fifteen minutes remaining, James Ewington hitting an excellent hat-trick. It was a very different game at newly-promoted FC Romania last weekend; the Woods looked in control for much of the ninety minutes but it again took late goals to claim all the points, and all credit to the lads’ spirit and fitness. With the reduction in division size this season, there are not many midweek games throughout the campaign. But this Monday, there is one, as we travel to play a local Middlesex derby against our old friends at Uxbridge; kick-off is at 3.00 p.m. And the Woods are back here next Saturday, 1st September, when Waltham Abbey visit. Good afternoon and welcome to Chestnut Avenue for today’s FA Cup fixture. We extend our welcome to our

visitors from Longlevens AFC and trust they enjoy their short stay here. Two wins in the first two games to start the season is very welcome, as in the previous couple of seasons our indifferent start has seen us fall at the first hurdle in both FA competitions. So, today, we are ready to go and hopefully progress to the next round.Behind the scenes here, a few changes have

taken place and I think it’s fair to say that our media coverage has gone up a few levels now, our website remains a pride of ours and if any sponsors are looking out for opportunities, there were approximately 2.1 million ‘hits’ on the site in the last 12 months encompassing

over 44,000 unique visitors. These are fantastic figures and with the recent addition of our YouTube channel and Woods TV, the future is looking bright. We are about to announce a stadium rights sponsorship for this season and hopefully beyond, we enjoy a great relationship with our tenants from London Tigers FC and Bosch are continuing to use our facilities as their training centre. So, of course this is all good news for us and it’s hard but essential work, so winning games helps with the feel good factor. I continue to thank all of our donors, sponsors and my team around me who, as I have said, have upped their game this season, thus taking a little pressure away from the few who have tried to do many jobs over the past decade or so.Enjoy the game today. Up the Woods!

4 Northwood v Longlevens | Saturday 25th August 2018

Good afternoon, and welcome back to Northwood Park for today’s FA Cup fixture against Longlevens AFC.

I’d like to extend a warm welcome to everyone connected with Longlevens AFC, and hope that both clubs enjoy this special occasion.Longlevens is a place I know very well, having managed the Potters Bar District U11 football team for 11 years, we played Gloucester District U11 at Longlevens Junior School many times.Having sent our assistant manager Scott Dash to the previous round game between Holmer Green and Longlevens, we know that Longlevens are a very good side who will cause us plenty of problems today if we are not on our game. The FA Cup is the biggest competition in the world and with the increased prize money at stake, this season it is important that we try to have a good run in this year’s event. We have started off the season fantastically well. To firstly win a trophy against a Premier League opposition in Chelsea was a great start. Then to beat one of the title favourites in Tooting & Mitcham United, having been 1-3 down to come back and win 4-3 was rightfully recognised by the whole league and we as a club were rewarded with the ‘Team Of The Week’ award, which will be another Trophy to add to the cabinet.I believe the crowd of 148 was the best home

crowd we have had at the opening game for 11 years, so I thank you for your support, as I know the players and management appreciate every person in attendance. The FC Romania game dealt us different problems as a team, but I was very happy to come away with another three points. When you play a promoted side they join the league full of confidence, so it was a job well done on the day.

James Ewington has shown already in pre-season and in the two league games what he is about and for him to have scored 10 goals so far means that if we can keep him fit for the season we have a class finisher on our hands. Our Under 18s will have played their first Save The Children Youth League game at Camberley by the time you read these notes, so I hope Rich, Mark and everyone involved had a

I hope you keep supporting in big numbers and we will try our hardest to make you all proud over this Bank Holiday weekend with the FA Cup game today and the local derby away at Uxbridge on Monday.Enjoy the game!

Club MattersSECRETARY ALAN EVANS

Good Start – two in twoWhen we were 1-3 down to expected title-challengers Tooting & Mitcham United on the opening day two weeks ago, not many people would have put money on the Woods coming back to win but the 4-3 success showed not only our ability to score goals but also a great spirit within the squad. We then followed that up last Saturday with a 3-1 away victory at FC Romania who were playing their first-ever game at Step 4 non-League level. Again it was late goals that turned the match our way and again it needed a good attitude to come back from the home side’s equalising goal scored from what looked like a debatable penalty just before half-time. We are back in League action in just two days’ time when we make the short trip to old friends Uxbridge on Bank Holiday Monday. Kick-Off is at 3pm and it would be good to see plenty of you there as we take on former manager Tony Choules’ latest Uxbridge. Hopefully see you all there!

Emirates FA CupMyles Stephenson has found fame with Rak-Su, a popular music combo having won X-Factor earlier this year but he can’t keep away from

non-League football and recently signed on for Hanwell Town. Myles also enjoyed much adulation when he hit the only goal of the game in our last FA Cup success, a first qualifying round replay at Harrow Borough back in 2015! So it’s three years since our last victory in the competition and since then we have lost at home to Didcot Town followed by successive

away game at Sun Sports and Swindon Supermarine and today we will be looking

to end that sequence as we take on Hellenic League side Longlevens in the first-ever meeting between the two clubs. The winners of today’s tie can earn an FA sponsorship prize of £2,890.00 with (for the first time this season) the losers being awarded £960.00 as a consolation prize. Our opponents have already banked £2,250 for being successful at Holmer Green in the Extra Preliminary Round so the Emirates FA Cup has become even more important to the finances of non-League clubs of our level this season. There have also been increases for the winners in each of the next couple of rounds too. If the scores are level after 90 minutes this afternoon we will face a replay at Longlevens’ Saw Mills End Stadium on Wednesday 5th September 2018 at 7.45p.m. (not this week). The draw for the First Qualifying Round of the Emirates FA Cup will take place at Monday lunchtime.

Other Cup CompetitionsThe Buildbase FA Trophy doesn’t start for the Woods until October but when we do get underway in that competition we will be away to Dunstable Town who were relegated back from the Southern Premier last season and will play the new season in Division One East of the Southern League. We’re not sure what day this game will take place on at the moment as AFC Dunstable (who share the ground) are also at home in the competition that weekend and neither club has preference! So watch this space for confirmation. In the Velocity Alan Turvey Trophy (Isthmian League Cup) we start our campaign with a home game against North Division side Bury Town on Tuesday 18th September 2018. The Suffolk side started their season with a 3-1 defeat at newly-promoted Felixstowe & Walton United. We last met Bury Town

Page 9: NORTHWOOD v LONGLEVENS Saturday 25th August 2018 …the North Gloucestershire League, but moved up to the Gloucestershire Northern Senior League in 1968/69. In the early part of the

twitter.com/NorthwoodFC | www.northwoodfc.com 9

back in 2007/08 in Division One North with our home game ending in a 4-3 victory, though we did lose 3-0 in the away fixture. Both Middlesex Cup competitions have been drawn in the last week or so and we will be away in the opening round of both. As last year, we will be away to AFC Hayes in the Middlesex Senior Cup on Tuesday 16th October 2018 while our first appearance in the Middlesex Charity Cup for several years will see us travel to play at Wingate & Finchley, with our manager Dean Barker making a swift return to his former club! That game should be played in mid-September so watch out for a date when it is arranged.

Season TicketsFor the fourth season in succession, we are offering a cut-price deal for any supporter who wants to purchase a season ticket for the new season. For the cost of just £40.00 you will gain access to all of our home League games this season (Cup games are all-pay as we have to share the gate receipts on all of these so no season tickets are allowed). In addition to this, you will also have free admission to the Under-18s home games in the midweek Isthmian Youth League while cut-price admission charges will also apply if you want to watch London Tigers at home when the Woods are away on their travels (though of course we would love to see you at away games too). To apply please complete an application form either at the clubhouse or on-line (where you can pay by card) from the website www.northwoodfc.com As always we are looking to build on our Season Ticket numbers this season, especially with our recently appointed new media team around to promote all things Northwood FC. So please spread the word on the season tickets and try to encourage others to come down and give us a try.

Under 18s MidweekWe have been looking forward to our Under 18s competing in the Isthmian Youth League, now renamed the Save the Children Youth League once again and the team, which reached the Middlesex County Sunday Cup Final last season when most of the boys were a year younger that their opponents, will also be playing in the FA Youth Cup. They have been given a home game to begin with against Brimsdown FC on Thursday 6th September 2018. The winners of that tie will be away to either Colney Heath or Ashford Town (Middlesex) at the next stage. The League season started this week with an away game at Camberley Town last Monday so we

hope they got off to a good start. This coming week they start their Isthmian League Cup campaign with an away game at Potters Bar Town on Thursday night, 30th August 2018.

Printed Programmes are backAfter a year of only producing our match-day programmes on-line, we have recently made the decision to return to a printed version for the upcoming season, starting with today’s pre-season fixture against Chelsea. This has been made possible thanks to some kind anonymous sponsorship which will allow us to produce them without making a loss so please make sure you get your copy every week.

Replica ShirtsYou may have noticed that we have moved to Nike as our new kit manufacturer this season and we do have a very limited number of replica shirts available (large, XL or XXL) in both the home Red and the away Royal Blue version which we wore for the first time on Saturday at FC Romania at a cost of £35.00. Please let me know if you are interested. Groundshare – London Tigers FC – Extended for another yearOur two clubs have agreed a further year’s groundshare arrangement for the season 2018/19 as their Avenue Park ground will still not be ready for a return to football. The Tigers managed to avoid relegation with a string of wins towards the end of the last season so will be playing Premier Division football in the Spartan South Midlands League once again. They started with two away games – one defeat and one win – but played their first home match against Biggleswade United on Saturday; unfortunately losing 0-1. Their next home game is scheduled to be against London Colney on Saturday 8th September 2018 and those with Northwood Season Tickets can gain admission for half price.

TODAY’S VISITORS

LONGLEVENS AFCThe History

The Club, in its current format, was founded in 1954, though there were rumours that a

Longlevens team had been in existence prior to the Second World War. They initially played in the North Gloucestershire League, but moved up to the Gloucestershire Northern Senior League in 1968/69.In the early part of the 21st century, Longlevens were Northern Senior League runners-up in 2002/03 and 2006/07, before finally winning the title in 2008/09. However, their facilities fell some way short of the standard required for the next step up and ironically, the one thing they could not control was the proximity to the neighbouring rugby pitches, so the problem seemed insurmountable. The club were in danger of losing members of the squad and possibly the management, but had a breakthrough when the City Council created a new venue, at Saw Mills, and although Longlevens had finished outside of the automatic position for promotion to the Gloucestershire County League, they were admitted to the League.Having spent more than forty years trying to reach the County League, within three

years Longlevens had gained promotion to the Uhlsport Hellenic League – but those three years were pretty successful! Mark Moore, now the club’s manager, had a ’near-death’ experience during a League fixture and was only saved by the fact that a team of paramedics happened to be playing on an adjacent pitch and the fact that he was ultra-fit. At that time the team were languishing in the bottom four or five places in the League, but then went on an unbeaten run of 26 League games which actually saw them win the title, but they had not applied to progress to the Uhlsport Hellenic League. However, the following season, they won the League again, by 17 points and also lifted the Les James League Cup, and this time were duly promoted into the Hellenic League. So, in 2014/15 another new phase started for the club, in Division One West of the Uhlsport Hellenic League and they won promotion at the first attempt. So, after three consecutive titles and two consecutive promotions, Longlevens found themselves in the Premier Division and they have consolidated their position there since, finishing tenth, twelfth, and last season, in ninth place.

THE WOODS IN THE FA CUP

14 Northwood v Longlevens | Saturday 25th August 2018

And so here it is. Northwood’s participation in the 2018-19 FA Cup begins this afternoon, and all those of

a Woods persuasion will undoubtedly hope it marks the start of a memorable journey. Our visitors, though, might have something to say about that having already dispensed of Holmer Green en route to today’s meeting at Northwood Park. A good game is in prospect. It goes without saying that days like today are occasions that excite. There simply isn’t anything that whets the appetite like an August FA Cup tie as players, officials and supporters dream of a deep cup run. It’s what non-League clubs aspire to achieve every season, though manager Dean Barker will wisely tell you his only focus is, and has to be, on the challenge presented by today’s opponents, Hellenic League side Longlevens. With an increase in the prize fund on offer, including the introduction of compensation for the losing side – £960 in this round – both sides are guaranteed a welcome boost to the coffers, while the winners will pocket a handsome £2890.That said I am always wary of monetising occasions like these. There is no doubting the importance of cup ties and why clubs consistently preach the importance of progressing through the qualifying rounds. Indeed, the lure of an FA Cup first round tie against league opposition in November might be the long-term target for all non-league sides, but the increase in status and

visibility that comes from a prolonged run in a competition as prestigious as this should never be underestimated either. In a modern football climate where everything from a replica shirt and matchday admission price, down to the price of a pint at the ground, is under the intensity of the microscope, I am tempted to view this fixture based on the excitement that entry into a competition like the FA Cup brings; the feeling of belonging, togetherness, and a sense of community. At its core, this is what this competition should be about. The Woods have offered plenty of encouragement so far, too, particularly the way Barker’s fledgling new outfit have found different ways to win in their two Isthmian League fixtures so far. Battling back from 3-1 down a fortnight ago to beat promotion favourites Tooting & Mitcham United 4-3 displayed the kind of character that all great sides possess in abundance. Then came a trip into the unknown for a first ever meeting with FC Romania who remain something of an enigma at Step 4. Northwood negotiated that hurdle, grinding out a 3-1 victory over in Cheshunt to preserve their 100 per cent record. So far so good. But with his squad still getting up to speed and players returning to the fold, we probably won’t have a clear idea about the prospects for the season as a whole until 10 to 12 games in – and most managers would be inclined to agree with me on that one.Off the pitch the club have enjoyed an

increase in local print coverage and have even landed a slot on BBC Three Counties radio, complementing a revived WoodsTV, so things are certainly looking up on that front. Long may that continue.Cup ties, though, are notoriously difficult to predict. The form guide, the fact Northwood are at home, Longlevens’ long journey up from Gloucestershire, and the visitors’ status as a Step 5 outfit all point to one result. However, disrespect your opponents at your peril. All of those factors go out of the window on days like these, pardon the cliché. Victory has to be earned. Rarely do you achieve your goals without grafting for them first. You get the sense that, early days they may be, these are the kind of values that resonate with Barker and are of the sort that he is in the process of instilling in his players. The 34-year-old’s upbringing and long association with grassroots football makes that almost a given, in my eyes at least. He appreciates that the FA Cup transcends everything else.He will no doubt be desperate to preserve his unbeaten start at Chestnut Avenue and progress today. The prestige and the financial benefits are long acknowledged but he is a competitor first and foremost and will be relishing the challenge presented by a new opponent in Longlevens.Winning football matches is infectious, after all. Creating the right culture within your club maybe more so. Today is another opportunity to put that to the test.Northwood’s FA Cup record in recent seasons hasn’t been too shabby. The Woods reached the second qualifying round in 2015-16 and the third qualifying round in 2012-13. But not since 2000-01 have the hosts made it to the fourth qualifying round, where they were beaten in a replay by Grays Athletic, and never have they made it to the first round proper.Victory for today’s visitors, meanwhile, would mark the furthest they have ever progressed in this competition in the entirety of their 64-year history. That will be motivation enough for Levens who have enjoyed a remarkable rise up the non-League pyramid in recent seasons. The players of both sides have a free hit, an opportunity to continue their individual and

collective journeys in the oldest knockout football competition in the world. The FA Cup retains its sacrosanctity for the sport’s purists in spite of its rather peripheral existence at the top table. Incentives aplenty for both sides, then, on an afternoon that will hopefully be played in the right spirit. May the best side win.

Hellenic League Premier Div.Northwood 3 Abingdon Town 11979: Northwood weathered a second half storm from Abingdon Town to improve their Hellenic

Premier position with four points from two wins in three matches. And it was Beano Wilson who proved to be the decisive factor for the Woods, who started at a low ebb through injuries and holidays. Wilson was a new recruit at Northwood Park and he gave his side an injection when he latched onto a crossfield ball from Steve Revell, who turned in a courageous display despite an ankle injury. Wilson drove low and hard into the corner of the net to put Northwood on their way.Northwood missed two chances, but Franklin was not to be denied and he weaved his way through the visitors’ defence, and Ellis despatched the chance. Now both sides showed their mettle, as Abingdon brought one back through Matthews. Goalmouth incidents at both ends flowed thick and fast, but Wilson sealed matters. He burst through two defenders on the right, and his 30-yard shot gave the keeper no chance.Northwood: Brian Chaffe, Norman Heslop, Steve Revell, Mick Luck, Martin O’Donnell, Phil Boyle, Robin Tidd, Ian Harvey, Martin Ellis, Nigel Franklin, Beano Wilson.

London Spartan LeagueNorthwood 1 Danson 11984: Lady Luck deserted North-wood in this London Spartan

League Premier Division encounter, having protected them for a first half where they left the field 1-0 ahead, but should have been at least three behind.Danson were a much more organised team, and while Northwood shone in some brilliant

patches, they were unable to sustain their pat-tern against the more determined visitors.Four times they should have scored, but des-perate defence, two goal-line clearances and a width of paint kept the Woods’ goal intact.Completely against the run of play the Woods broke away, Peter Davies swept past two players, to send Peter Caines on a run, and his superb cross was headed home by Billy Stagg. In the second half the Woods improved, mainly due to the inspirational work of Pip Boyle in midfield, and they looked capable of holding their undeserved lead. Then an incredible penalty decision gave Dan-son the chance of equalising, which they took with relish. Northwood: Keith May; Alan Routledge, Gary Amer, Peter Lammin; Peter Davies, Derek Payne, Barry Davies, Phil Boyle; Billy Stagg, Bobby Ben-nett, Peter Caines

Middlesex Charity CupAshford Town 1 Northwood 11990: Northwood made a dra-matic exit from the Middlesex

Charity Cup in a penalty shoot-out when Lee Randall and David Nolan failed to score. The match at Ashford ended 1-1 after extra time, and although Greg Phillips and Tim Vincent scored in the shoot-out it was not enough to keep North-wood in the cup.Earlier in the match Northwood had a disap-pointing first 45 minutes and suffered an ear bashing from manager Alan Merison at the half-time interval. Merison felt his side were pushing the ball about well, but showed poor finishing. And he was proved right after the break when

Christian played a neat ball through to Romaine Walker, who let fly from the edge of the box and Woods were two goals to the good. A quick break eleven minutes into the second period just about ended the game as a contest; Hutchinson drove in a cross-shot which narrowly eluded the head of Spencer Bellotti – but also eluded the keeper and found its way into the net for Northwood’s third goal (pictured right). Goal number four ar-rived in the 67th minute when Walker shim-mied towards goal in familiar style before shooting home. A minute later it was 5-0, a quick free-kick finding Yorke at the right of the goal, and the centre-half’s powerful effort soon nestled in Sillitoe’s net. On 75 minutes former Northwood reserve player Marcus Sawyers curled home a fine effort for

United, and two minutes from the end Aylesbury scored a second consolation when War-ren Garcia’s shot was deflected into the net. Northwood: Reading, Raper (Fraser), McDonnell, Hewitt, Yorke, Christian, Hutchinson (Asombang), White, Hawkins (Rogers), Bellotti, Walker.

Northwood notched two late goals to spoil the party for FC Romania as the home side

played their first-ever game at Step 4 in their short history. It makes it two wins from two for new manager Dean Barker’s fresh-look side who have hit the ground running and sit second in the fledgling league table. It was no surprise to see the home side begin at a fast pace and with some crisp passing that saw them force a series of corners through the skills of Maradona Chiriac without really threatening a goal. The closest they came was a shot from skipper George Taban that was always flying high. But on nine minutes, with their first attack, the Woods could have been in front. Sam Tring’s excellent ball from the back put Ben Pattie in on goal but he skied his shot and the chance was gone. Karl Stevenson picked up an early booking for a foul on Felix Lupu but Northwood gradually worked their way into the game and a Pattie free-kick from out wide after 17 minutes almost caught out goalkeeper Adrian Darabant who did well to keep it out with a dive to his left. Then, on 24 minutes the Woods were in front. Chingoka played an excellent ball from deep in his own half which found Jorome Slew out wide on the left. He cut in across the penalty-area, avoiding a series of half-hearted challenges before powering a shot which flew into the top corner to give Darabant no chance. FC Romania responded well though and continued to look for openings. Just befor ethe break Maximov travelled with the ball into the box and flew theatrically into the air under a challenge from Miguel Lopes de Matos. The Referee pointed to the spot and Gabriel Ghinea made FC Romania history by emphatically dispatching his kick into the top corner. Northwood started the second-half well and were awarded a free-kick of their own just outside the box on 48 minutes. Pattie fired his shot round the wall and the ‘keeper did well to keep it out. Slew was quickest to the rebound but again Darabant blocked his effort and the ball was cleared. On the hour FC Romania went close as Chiriac made space for a low shot which Sheldrick saved well low down by the post. It proved to be the home side’s last effort on goal. It was after 83 minutes that Northwood finally regained the lead and it was a long, diagonal ball from Stevenson that caused the damage. It dropped over the attempted clearance of the full-back and Slew was in with a neat chip over the ‘keeper that dropped in for his second goal of the game. It got better for the Woods four minutes later when Melford-Rowe played a square ball that found James Ewington, who pounced to follow-up his opening-day hat-trick with the killer goal in this one.

New-look Northwood’s league campaign got off to a victorious start as Dean Barker’s

men stunned Tooting & Mitcham. The Terrors settled well and looked the more threatening in the early stages, with their wing-backs finding plenty of space down both flanks. But it was Woods who opened the scoring against the run of play as James Ewington applied a neat finish on 20 minutes to continue the goal scoring form he displayed during the pre-season campaign. The visitors looked for a quick response and Northwood’s lead proved to be short-lived as they lost possession in midfield, allowing Isiah Jones to beat a possible offside flag and set up Dunn, who despatched the ball beyond goalkeeper Luke Sheldrick for the equalising goal on 25 minutes. And the Terrors deservedly took the lead on 43 minutes as Jerome Slew got in a bit of a tangle as he looked to clear the loose ball, Peter Wedgeworth being presented with the easiest of chances as he converted from close range. Northwood had a chance to regain parity with the final kick of the first half as Pattie’s corner found its way to Ewington but the Woods’ goalscorer scooped his effort over the crossbar.Woods came out for the second period in positive fashion and they immediately threatened as Emmanuel Melford-Rowe had a good shout for a penalty award turned down after he appeared to be bundled over. The Terrors might have considered themselves a little lucky, and they looked to make the most of their good fortune as the increasingly dangerous Jones shot narrowly wide. At the other end, Northwood left-back Miguel Matos made a strong run into Tooting territory before sending his shot wide of the target.Woods were beginning to make more of an impression and working themselves into some useful positions. However, they were dealt a cruel blow as they lost possession in the visitors’ half which lead to Bassett applying an emphatic finish to a swift counter-attack to extend the Terrors’ lead on 55 minutes. Northwood threw themselves a lifeline when substitutes Nyariki and Lucan combined to create an opportunity for Ewington, who sneaked the ball home at the far post to give the hosts hope on 76 minutes. And things got even better for Northwood three minutes later as Terrors’ goalkeeper Liam Sallis made a hash of Pattie’s lofted free-kick, skipper Carl Pearce the first to react as he gleefully headed home to restore parity.Woods had engineered an amazing turnaround to leave the visitors shell-shocked, and now went in search of an unlikely victory. And another Pattie free-kick lead to further confusion in the Tooting box which resulted in Ewington getting the final touch to complete his hat-trick and the Northwood recovery, and signal wild celebrations with a minute of normal time left on the clock.Northwood were faced with a nervous few minutes as they looked to negotiate the ensuing stoppage time, but they coped admirably.

The Woods Under 18s are again this season playing in the Isthmian Youth League - now

known as the Save The Children Youth League - West Division, guided by Mark Fox and Richard Elderfield (pictured), and have been working hard in the run-up to the new campaign. The new league season unfortunately ended in a 1-4 defeat away to Camberley Town last Monday evening.Last season’s runners-up Camberley took a first half lead, only for Femi Azeez to swiftly level. However, Camberley added three further goals after the break to take the points. The Woods’ team was: Caolan Doyle, Dan Cresswell, Kieran Ali, Jamie Fulton, Callum Bedwell, Ben Dufaux, Ellis Wynter, Jordan Coles, Connor Maher, Ali Alanesi, Femi Azeez. Subs. Ayoub Enajar, Luca Rita, Joe Manning.Pre-season went pretty well for the Northwood youngsters, who defeated Harefield United 3-1, Cockfosters 6-0 and Uxbridge 3-1, only losing to mens’ teams in Middlesex County League Kodak first team (0-2), whilst they were defeated 3-1 by a Northwood XI last week, a game which usefully gave minutes to a number of senior players.Next up for the midweek Under 18s is an Isthmian League Youth Cup tie at Potters Bar Town on Thursday next week, 30th August. Their first game at Northwood Park is an F.A. Youth Cup fixture against Brimsdown FC Still on the subject of Under 18s squads, the Northwood Under 17 Sunday team have been awarded the Middlesex F.A. Under 18 County Cup for 2017-18. They had been narrowly defeated in the final by Conquest FC, but the Isleworth-based club have now been ejected from the competition for fielding an ineligible player. Congratulations to the Woods players and management on this belated award!

30 Northwood v Longlevens | Saturday 25th August 2018

Today we continue with our popular

feature where we look back to events here at Northwood Park from exactly a decade ago. The Woods had ended the 2007/08 season, their first back in the Isthmian League, in a creditable tenth place after a slow start having won their last six home games in succession and with only two defeats in their final twelve matches. At the end of season awards night, held at the Met Police Sports Club in Bushey, it was young central defender Bradley Hewitt who swept the board

to claim all three main awards with goalkeeper Mitch Swain runner-up in the Supporters Player of the Year award. Despite leaving to join Stevenage Borough in January, it was teenager Elliott Buchanan who claimed the Golden Boot with 23 goals while John Christian won Most Promising Player. There were nine warm-up friendly fixtures in pre-season and they started with a home victory over Conference South side AFC Wimbledon. The two sides had met in the FA Trophy the previous season with the New Dons winning narrowly 2-1 after the Woods had led for much of the first-half. It may have only been a friendly but Northwood turned the tables to notch a 2-1 success. Adrian Abramian scored the opener after just ten minutes and although Elliott Godfrey levelled after 24 minutes, it was new signing Terry Davies who notched the winner when he charged down an attempted

clearance from goalkeeper Jack Turner and the ball ricocheted into the empty net. Interestingly the AFC Wimbledon side that day ten years ago included Evans Kouassi who starred for the Woods last season and Billy Dunn who score for Tooting & Mitcham here two weeks ago! Manager Colin Payne would have been pleased with that result but it got even better as there was a 2-1 victory at the Metropolitan Police and then a home game against Football League Two side Barnet ended in a 3-1 victory. Two goals in the opening six minutes did the damage and it was tricky winger Michael Gordon that starred. Firstly his run and cross set up Abdul Yoki for the opener and then Gordon bagged the second himself with a sublime chip. When they added a third goal after 22 minutes, Gordon applying the finish after a slick move involving Yoki, Sean Sonner and Terry Davies, it was game over. Barnet’s consolation came from the penalty-spot through Luke Medley. There were a few setbacks in the remainder of the pre-season campaign, a 4-0 defeat at Chalfont St. Peter being the worst, but they finished with a 3-0 defeat of Burnham – a double for Terry Davies and one for Sean Sonner

- and it looked like the squad had taken shape well for the opening away game at Waltham Forest. New faces added to the squad included Terry Davies, an experienced 26-year-old striker whose previous clubs included Burnham, Slough Town and Windsor & Eton, defender Joe Cowan who had joined from Harefield United and another youngster in defender Richard Orlu who joined on dual-registration from Staines Town where he was highly-rated. All three were included for their debuts in the opening game away at Waltham Forest who were groundsharing Ilford FC’s Cricklefield Stadium and we were greeted by a bumpy, sandy surface. The full line-up for that opening game played on Saturday 16th August 2008 was:

Mitch Swain, Joe Cowan, Ryan Tackley, Richard Orlu, Bradley Hewitt, John Christian, Michael

Gordon, Dwain Williams, Sean Sonner, Terry Davies, Danny Murphy. Subs. Rob Pearce (Gk), Dwane Williams, Adrian Abramian, Danny Brown, Aryan Tajbakhsh. The only game of a scrappy game played in strong winds came after 25 minutes. Sean Sonner caused the damage with a long throw that home goalkeeper Roberto Gada came to collect but missed the ball completely and predator Terry Davies converted into an unguarded net. It was the Woods first opening-day away win since 2002. The follow-up first home game of the season came just a few days later, a midweek match against one of the favourites for promotion with the visit of Enfield Town. Browsing through the programme for the match, we learn that the FA had launched their Respect Campaign which involved the pre-match handshake. Their marketing film for the campaign had been filmed here at Northwood FC with a visit from England Manager Fabio Capello and a string of former internationals who all strutted their stuff on the Northwood Park pitch! With Chairman Ian Barry starting his first full season at the club, he also announced that agreement had been

reached for Watford Ladies to play their FA Women’s Premier League matches at Northwood. With Sean Sonner starting the first of three matches away on holiday, Colin Payne chose to bring in striker Leon Nelson for his debut for the

game against Enfield Town, choosing the former Woods reserve striker ahead of crowd favourite Adrian Abramian. There was also a debut for right-back Matt Plaskett as Joe Cowan switched to central defence in place of Richard Orlu who dropped to the bench as he was held up in traffic on route to the ground. Not much else went wrong though as the Woods raced into a 2-0 lead inside the opening ten minutes. Firstly John Christian unleashed an unstoppable half-volley to put the Woods in front after just seven minutes and then Bradley Hewitt headed in a Danny Murphy cross two minutes later. Enfield remained shell-shocked for much of the half with goalkeeper Eric Pudalov making a series of saves against a rampant

Northwood attack. Ten minutes into the second-half the game was made safe as central defender Hewitt grabbed his second of the match from close-range after Dwain Williams’ fierce free-kick was beaten out by the ‘keeper. And with ten minutes remaining Hewitt played the ball that released Terry Davies and the striker notched his second of the season with ease. A 4-0 victory, a second clean-sheet and things were really looking up for the Woods. We will have more from Ten Years After in our next Match-Day programme.

TODAY’S FA CUP FIXTURES Hanwell Town, Northwood and Bracknell Town led the early Bostik League table after last weekend’s results. Hanwell hosted Bedfont Sports, who were playing their first ever game at this level, and goals from Gareth Chendlik (2) and Andrew O’Brien gave Town an unassailable lead despite a late consolation from Jack Mills.Bracknell were at Molesey, having strengthened what already looks a very good squad with a third signing from FA Vase winners Thatcham Town, midfielder Harrison Bayley. Bayley went straight into the starting line-up, but it was another Thatcham old boy, Liam Ferdinand, who scored his second and third of the season as the Robins defeated the Moles by two goals to one. Tayo Oyebola reduced the arrears for Molesey.Marlow travelled to face a Tooting & Mitcham United side still smarting after turning a 3-1 lead into a 4-3 defeat at Northwood on the opening day, but neither side could find the net, so took a point apiece. Chipstead didn’t have a good start against visitors Ashford Town, who were 3-0 up after an hour, and eventually won 4-2. A Mark Bitmead hat trick and a goal from James Cottee gave them victory, despite Chipstead goals

from Luke Elliott and Daniel Moody.Hayes & Yeading United defeated Egham Town 4-0 at the Skyex Community Stadium with a Lewis Toomey hat trick and a fourth from Lee Barney. Waltham Abbey won a pulsating match 5-3 against local rivals Cheshunt. A double from Ronnie Winn and one from Charlie Stimson put them three up at the break, and after Nathan Koranteng pulled one back two more from Rob Clark and Ibrahim Kehinde made it five, before a very late double from Jason Hallett made it look more respectable for Craig Edwards men.South Park were looking for their first victory under manager Mick Sullivan, but Uxbridge beat them 1-0 thanks to a Luke Maguire first-half goal. Fifth place Ware went to Westfield and took a two-goal lead through Leigh Rose and Albert Adu, only for the home side to hit back through Jamil Okai and Karle Carder-Andrews (2) to win 3-2. Hertford Town hosted Chalfont St Peter, and gained a 2-1 win, but they left it late, George Lutaaya scoring right at the end to take the points after Ollie Sharman and Jordan Berry had shared first half goals.
