All are carved by legendary rivers that thread together countless sparkling lakes –

so many that an average-sized map can only show a fraction of them. These cold,

clean waters spawn some of the planet’s biggest, feistiest freshwater fish, and our

skilled guides know where to find them. The NWT’s list of World Record catches

is a long one. Could be you’ll reel in another champion.

CHOOSE YOUR CHALLENGEFeel the thrill as a frisky Arctic Grayling leaps to your cast. Steal up on monster-sized Lake Trout, alert for that first nibble that signals an epic underwater battle.

This is fishing in Canada’s Northwest Territories – big, bold, accessible, and the beginning of a thousand true fish tales. Fishing lakes are everywhere, from silent forest pools to enormous inland seas. Troll the awesome East Arm of Great Slave, flanked by imposing red granite

cliffs. Take to the open waters of giant Great Bear, home of World Record-breakers. Head for myriad streams and brimming basins along our river systems. Cast a lure in the winding channels of the Mackenzie Delta or fly-fish the crystal rivers and unpressured lakes of the Boreal forest or the Barrenlands. NWT waters harbour an exciting variety of catches: Arctic Char, Lake Trout, Pickerel (Walleye), Burbot, Dolly Varden, Inconnu, Grayling and

Whitefish. Test your skills against the “water wolf” – voracious Northern Pike, on the prowl for anything that moves and ready to give you the fight of your life. You can troll from a boat, stand at the water’s edge with your spinning reel, or get knee-deep in a river eddy for unforgettable fly-casting.

Whatever your dream of a perfect fishing trip is, you’ll find it here, on the spectacular waters of the Northwest Territories.

Work a roaring mountain stream, or drop your line into a deep bluewater lake.

PICK YOUR PACKAGE

It’s easy to choose the trip that’s right for you: browse the listings pages in this guide, where NWT lodges and outfitters are classified by the services they offer. Book a day trip out of a Northern community with one of our local outfitters. Or fly out for a cabin weekend on a lake that seems to be yours alone. Try a unique ice-fishing jaunt in “hard water season.” From hard-core camping adventures where you rough it in your own tent to luxury lakeside accommodations, there’s something for everyone, year-round.

For a taste of backwoods luxury, hop a chartered floatplane to a full-service lodge on some of the best fishing real estate in the world. In addition to opportunities to land trophy Lake Trout, Northern Pike, Pickerel or Arctic Grayling, they’ll supply everything from fully equipped cabins or rooms, boats, guides and delicious meals to hot tubs, private baths and lounge facilities.

Operators will provide detailed travel information, tell you about the weather and exactly what to bring. Some all-inclusive packages cover every detail of your trip, starting from a gateway city in southern Canada. Ask about weather conditions to make sure you’re properly outfitted for your adventure.

With nearly 50 NWT fishing operators, there’s a fishing package to meet your expectations.

Seasoned travellers pack t-shirts, shirts, a sweater or fleece jacket and a wind and rainproof jacket. A couple of pairs of jeans or canvas trousers, good sneakers or hiking boots, some socks and you’re ready for anything. A hat, gloves, bug jacket and insect repellent are also recommended. Polarized sunglasses protect your eyes from UV rays and reflected glare, and help you see underwater structures and fish. Cabins at fly-in housekeeping camps are generally outfitted with 14-16 ft aluminum boats, fuel, propane appliances, fridge, stove, lamps, dishes, cutlery and utensils, cots, mattresses and woodstoves. You may also need to bring food, drinks (recyclable cans and plastic bottles), sleeping bag, flashlights, toilet paper, garbage bags, first aid kit, small axe and your fishing licence. But be aware that when you’re travelling by floatplane, your baggage allowance may be limited to 60-90 lbs per person. Of course, you need to bring your fishing gear. Pack enough rods, lures and tackle to pursue multiple fish species.

FLY-CATCHING WONDERUntil you’ve experienced a gnashing Northern Pike on the end of a 30 lb. shock tippet you haven’t experienced fly-fishing at its peak. North of 60 is the land of fish and our cool, clear, clean waters make it a paradise for the “art of the fly”.We break records up here without even trying and our Arctic Char and fierce Northern Pike demand you bring out the big rods. An 8 to 10 weight, nine foot rod with lots of

backing capacity and solid drag will do the trick. But as any fly-fisher knows, size isn’t everything.

Finding a spring creek in the mountains full of 2 lb. Arctic Grayling or a lake with Trout in a feeding frenzy can be the mystical experience of a lifetime. A lighter rod will usually do for these beauties and yes, our Lake Trout do like flies. For the best and most rewarding

experience contact one of our many lodges across the Territories. They’re the experts when it comes to knowing what, where and when the fish are biting. They’ll also supply your tackle or suggest the best gear to bring. And who knows, maybe they’ll let you take a crack at that special one-of-a kind northern stonefly nymph they tied last week.

Sea-running specimens usually range from 2.3 to 4.5 kg, but can reach over 10 kg. They’re found in the Arctic NWT, in coastal rivers on the islands and along the mainland coast. Slightly smaller char inhabit inland lakes. Best caught with a fly rod, they take a brightly coloured fly. Or try dead-drifting a small nymph to get their attention.

Pike are greedy and relatively easy to hook. But hold on tight: they’re fearsome fighters! Often called Jackfish, they run from 2.3 to 6.8 kg, and some tip the scales at over 18 kg. Pike prefer warm, slow-moving, weedy water. They’ll hit medium to large spoons and spinners, and will also break surface to strike at flies, streamers and plugs.

Lake trout average 4.5 kg, but catches of 18 kg are common. (The World Record is a 32.66 kg lunker from Great Bear Lake.) They grow slowly in our cold waters, taking 12 or more years to mature. In early summer, they take large silver spoons, wigglers, large spinners, surface plugs and dry flies. In mid-summer, you’ll need jigs, downriggers and buzz bombs.

ARCTIC CHARSalvelinus alpinus

NORTHERN PIKEEsox lucius

LAKE TROUTSalvelinus namaycush

A fine-looking fish that resembles a Bull Trout, it’s found in the western Mackenzie Delta, in waters along the northern slope of the Richardson Mountains and in the Peel River watershed. Dolly Varden can weigh up to 1.5 kg and will take imitation roe and pixie spoons.

This odd-looking freshwater cod can grow to about 38 cm and is widespread throughout the Northwest Territories, in rivers and large lakes. Although Burbot are well camouflaged and difficult to spot, they’re especially plentiful in the outflows of small streams in the Mackenzie Delta during early winter. If you’re ice-fishing, they’ll take artificial lures, jigs and spoons.

Often confused with Dolly Varden, Bull Trout are frequently found in the Liard and Mackenzie watersheds, including the numerous rivers and streams that flow out of the Mackenzie Mountains. They average about 1 kg, but can reach up to 3 kg. They are both attractive and aggressive, and will take medium-sized spinners, spoons and flies.

DID YOU KNOW?Our fishing weather is one of our best-kept secrets. In the peak of summer, you can fish all night in 24-hour daylight, and temperatures on the mainland hover around 20°C (70°F) with very little rain.

AND...But the weather is unpredictable, so it’s always best to be prepared with a selection of clothing layers to take off or put on.

Found throughout the Northwest Territories in lakes, rivers and the channels of the Mackenzie Delta, they average 1.1 kg and can be taken with Mepps, small gold spoons and spinners. When they go deep, you can land them with small jigs or deep flies. Whitefish provide a lot of action, but must be hooked gently, as they have fragile mouths.

LAKE WHITEFISHCoregonus clupeaformis

Inconnu average from 3-5 kg, although individuals weighing 9-14 kg are plentiful, and some reach up to 31 kg. The name is French for “unknown,” but they’re well known in the Mackenzie Delta, where they’re called Coney. As they migrate into the rivers to spawn, gold and silver spoons will attract them. They’ll also take to a drifting rubber-tailed jig.

ARCTIC GRAYLING

PICKEREL

Members of the Whitefish family, Grayling are treasured by anglers for their exciting action. Pretty little fish with sail-like dorsal fins, they’re found at the mouths of cold, clean rivers. They average from 0.4 to 0.9 kg and can range up to 1.5 kg. Try a small spinner or spoon, or use a fly rod with wet or dry flies.

ARCTIC GRAYLINGThymallus arcticus

Also known as Walleye, these big fighting Perch can be hooked in the Mackenzie River watershed as far north as the Delta, and the tributary streams and rivers of Great SlaveLake. They can weigh up to 2.3 kg. Streamer flies and spinners are the usual lures of choice for Pickerel, which make very fine eating fresh out of the water.

He also has firsthand experience fly fishing for Arctic Grayling, Dolly Varden, Pickerel (Walleye), Whitefish and Lake Trout. And as an international fly fishing competitor, he’ll tell you that the fly fishing in the Northwest Territories is right up there with other well-known destinations. “Fly fishing locations in the Northwest Territories are more remote, less crowded and offer more exotic species. Seasons are shorter and access is limited, but the fish are big and feisty,” says Courtoreille.

A veteran of the Canadian National Fly Fishing Team and a participant in five World and one Commonwealth fly fishing competitions, Courtoreille benefits from easy access to a range of lakes and rivers in the Northwest Territories. The only northern fish he hasn’t yet caught on a fly rod is an Arctic Char, found mainly in rivers running into the Arctic Ocean. But, as Courtoreille says, “Some day...”

You may fish with only one line at a time, and no more than two barbless hooks on the line. Live fish cannot be used for bait in the Northwest Territories, and spring-loaded hooks or lures are not permitted. Barbless hooks can usually be removed with a hook remover or needle nose pliers, without damaging the fish. File or break off the barbs before you

go fishing. Minimize handling the fish you catch, and try to keep the fish in water before you release it. Avoid contact with the gills or eyes, and gently ensure that the fish is conscious before releasing it. Never squeeze a live fish. Visit www.enr.gov.nt.ca for a complete list of Northwest Territories fishing regulations.
