High Interest Loans A Danger For Winter SeasonContinued from front page:

We are all familiar with the term 'loanshark', and the frightening, often grosslyaggressive means they can employ toretrieve greatly inflated sums from theirclients. But it can be surprisingly difficultto make the right choice in a marketsaturated with legal 'payday loans'companies and flashy internet advertisingfor high interest lending sites as well.Unregulated, illegal lending still exists, butalmost as risky is the legal side of the samebusiness.

With many of these legal money-lendingcompanies loaning short-term, highinterest amounts (often at APRs almost ashigh as a loan shark) advertising directly tothe unemployed, or people with bad creditratings and mortgage arrears, there is nodoubt that they capitalise on laterepayments. And though the legal side ofthe industry can't be said to exercise thesame level of intimidation and bullying that

illegal lenders are renowned for, that's notto say they have not been found to exertsignificant pressure on their clients whenmoneys are not paid on time.

Credit Unions have long been recognisedas a safe and responsible low interestalternative to traditional borrowing or highinterest options, but as highlighted byIndependent MEP Marian Harkin at the 25thanniversary conference of the Irish Leagueof Credit Unions Foundation last month, these community-based financialinstitutions are facing their own troubles.Currently, there are over 450 credit unionsforced to place their surplus funds ondeposit with banks at a rate of less than 1%rather than loan, at reasonable rates, tovalid customers. Ms Harkin was clear in hermessage:

“The Credit Union movement must notbe unnecessarily hindered in its hugelyimportant work of credit provision andmust instead be encouraged to use its

experience and expertise to help citizens inIreland to avoid the clutches ofextortionate moneylenders”

Manager of Sligo Credit Union, BarryO'Flynn reassures that despite toughermeasures being implemented by theCentral Bank, Credit Unions are stilllending, and creating a sufficient savingrecord with them is not overly difficult. Hisadvice to anyone facing into the expense ofthe approaching festive season is simple;

"We encourage anyone who is in aposition to do so to join their credit unionand create a record with them...Moneylenders make it easy for people toget loans - the cost is however,oppressive... If we could get one messageacross, it is that availing of credit fromlegal and illegal moneylenders may appeareasy but the cost is more than 10 timesnormal credit and the greater cost is beingtied into immoral and unjustified costs formany years."

There were plenty ofjokes, giggles andremarks made about the

Naturist Congress inDrumshanbo at the weekend, but the event also broughtplenty of positive publicity forLeitrim from national andinternational media.

The congress focused onNaturist Tourism but it alsoevident that if the legalsituation was clearer inIreland we could gain backvital UK and EU visitorslooking to bare all on holidays.

The well organised pressconference had English,French and Dutch translatorsto cater for the delegatesfrom 25 countries. Somedelegates travelled over 30hours from Australia and SouthAfrica to attend the 34thcongress in Drumshanbo, whileothers flew in from Brazil,Canada and across Europe.

At least half of thedelegates attended thecongress naked, and despitethe initial shock of seeing menand women representing theircountries without any clotheson, the amusement wore offas the congress settled downto serious business. Laws and

tourism promotion, fallingmembership and localrestrictions made up the mainconcerns for the internationalorganisation. Many of thosewho attended spent at least aweek in Ireland, while thosewho were only over for theweekend were treated to tripsto the Arigna Mines, Parke’sCastle and enjoyed the privateuse of Lough Allen Hotel’s spafacilities during their stay.

Neil McManus of Lough AllenHotel said they were“privileged” to host thecongress and wished them awonderful time in the county. The hotel staff said locals hadbeen amused by the event, but everyone would receive areal Leitrim welcome.

Eamon Scully led the IrishNaturist Association andwelcomed all the delegates toIreland. The InternationalNaturist Federation (INF-FNI)represents the interests ofmore than 5 million naturistsworld wide.

Each delegate outlined theircountry’s policy on naturisttourism and it was Ireland thatfared the worst with nuditybeing outlawed here.

The congress said it

supported the INA’s efforts “tomake naturism betterunderstood in Ireland and tohave suitable beachesdesignated for naturismaround the country. Ireland, with its long coastline, hasmany secluded beaches whichwould be perfect fornaturists.” Eamon Scully saidhe felt that Ireland is losingout on the growing worldwidenaturist tourism market. Theprovision of officiallyapproved naturist facilitieswould draw tourists to Ireland.

Mike Ayers, Vice Presidentsaid that although Ireland wasgenerally a welcoming country“it has not a lot to offernaturists” despite the hugetourism potential the sectorprovides.

Eamon Scully made a linkbetween the top touristcountries France, Spain andUSA and the fact they havenaturist beaches, venues andclubs. The congress heard theUK are large exporters ofnaturists. The UK does havenaturist beaches, a naturistspa hotel and a lot of naturistcampers, but surveys showthey like to visit naturistvenues while abroad.

The delegates who all worename tags around their neckswere informed that they couldbe naked in the conferencecentre, half of the boardwalkand in the pool area duringthe designated hours, butwere reminded that nudity isillegal and was not allowed inthe public bar.

IT is now believed thatwell over 100 motorists ineast Mayo will lose of

thousands of euro, aftertheir cars were extensivelydamaged by what is called‘petrol stretching’.Thepractice involves adding upto 10 percent of kerosene topetrol, thereby ‘stretching’or diluting the fuel.

Contaminated fuel hasreportedly been sold inrecent weeks in theSwinford and Foxford areas, and many motorists whounwittingly put it into theirvehilces are now facingrepair bills of severalthousand euro.

Almost 400 peopleattended a public meetingon Tuesday last in Swinfordto voice their anger andshare their stories. Peoplefrom all over the county, aswell as parts of Galway andSligo, attended, all seekinganswers after their vehicleswere damaged. Fine Gaeldeputy Michelle Mulhern alsoraised some controversywhen she accused Sinn Feinof not showing adequateconcern about the issue, making references to theIRA’s association with fuellaundering in the past. Shealso referred to the absenceof Fine Fein representativesat the meeting.

The meeting was chairedby local man Paddy McNulty, who says his car engine hasbeen destroyed by dilutedfuel..

“I’m completely out ofpocket and there doesn’tseem to be any redress. Mycar was making funny noisesat the end of August, so I

brought it to my localgarage. They didn’t thinkanything was wrong, butwhen I brought it back afterdoing a bit more mileagethey said the engine wasgone [due to] fuelcontamination,” said MrMcNulty, adding that he gotall his fuel in a filling stationin Swinford. Mr McNulty saidhe believes the stretchedpetrol, or ‘jungle juice’ ashe calls it, was delivered inJune and that the damage tomost cars was only comingto light in the last number ofweeks. “The newer the carthe quicker they went,” hesaid. The Swinford man, whohas spent €2,000 repairinghis car, explained that hewas lucky to get his handson a secondhand engine.Other people with newercars are facing bills of up to€7,000 for replacementengines, he said.

Sergeant Richard Tahenyof Swinford Garda Stationhas urged anyone affectedto visit the station to make astatement. They should alsosupply as much informationabout the vehicle – such asservice history, NCT, fuelreceipts – as possible.Though fuel samples havebeen taken from fillingstations in east Mayo, MrMcNulty believes there is nocontaminated fuel left.

“I don’t know will we everget to the bottom of it.Forecourts are gettingsamples taken now butthey’re ok, thecontaminated fuel is gone,”said McNulty. “The horse hasbolted and there’s a messleft.” According to Mr

McNulty, Aviva Insurance isthe only insurance companythat covers fuelcontamination under itspolicies. However, Cllr AnnieMay Reape has indicatedthat AXA Insurance may alsonow be prepared to dealwith claims.

Following her attendanceat the meeting last week,Deputy Michelle Mulherintabled a motion for debatein the Daíl, asking theMinister for Finance to‘provide assistance’ to carowners who are‘significantly out of pocket’.

However, Mr McNulty saidthey were not confident thata fund, similar to that rolledout in Dublin to deal withpyrite damage, will beestablished.

Petrol and kerosene burnat different rates duringcombustion, causing a build-up of residue and carboninside the combustion area

and on the piston crown andvalves. This residue makesits way down the cylinderwalls causing the pistonrings to stick, resulting inlow engine compression.

Symptoms of damage toengines due to fuelcontamination include lossof engine power; the enginemanagement warning lightcoming on; engine misfiring;a knocking noise afterengine starts up from coldand excessive blow backthrough the oil dipstick andoil filler cap when theengine is running.

Most engines that havebeen run on stretched petrolare so damaged they have tobe replaced.

Kerosene is used as a fuelfor heating and is availablefor as little as 80 cent perlitre. Petrol is often close todouble that. Retailers cansave €700 per 10,000 gallonsof petrol.

Afilm which wasmade in Sligo hasreceived plaudits

from an unlikely source.“Calvary”, filmed in lo-cations which includedStrandhill, Easkey andSligo town (with otherscenes shot in Rush, Co.Dublin), has received aglowing review in theBoston Globe by theArchbishop of Philadel-phia, Charles Chaput. The Archbishop praisedCalvary’s “understatedpower” and he de-scribed it as an “un-blinking, unforgettablefilm. But the film has notbeen without its shareof controversy. DirectorJohn Michael McDonaghhas been subject to

fierce criticism for ef-fectively disowning theIrish film industryMcDonagh’s commentsthat Irish films were“unintelligent” and nottechnically accom-plished, along with hiscontention that Calvaryis not an Irish film, hasgenerated real angerwithin the industry inIreland. At the weekendthe mounting contro-versy was joined by oneof Ireland’s most suc-cessful film producers.Rebecca O’Flanagan, described McDonagh’scomments as “disre-spectful and arrogant inthe extreme” and also“entirely unnecessary”.She said McDonagh hadgot a “huge proportion”

of Irish Film Board fund-ing (€975,000) on thebasis that the film wasIrish and disowning it assuch was a “moralbreach of contract”. Ms O’Flanagan, whoseproducing credits in-clude The Stag andGood Vibrations, alsocriticised the board fornot being more robustin criticising McDonagh, though chief executiveJames Hickey said atthe weekend that hedisagreed with his viewson Irish filmsMcDonagh, in his ownstatement said that hiscomments had been“wilfully misrepre-sented by a small sec-tion of the Dublin mediawith an axe to grind”.

It has taken 42years, but at lastthe resting place

for Castlerea’s mostfamous elephant,Cindy has beengiven duerecognition.

As the story goesCindy becamefamous when thelate Patsy Glynn Snrtook a picture of her coming out ofStephen Mannion’s Bar on the Main Streetin the town in June 1958. While paradingthrough the town, before the circusperformance, Cindy wandered intoStephen Mannion’s pub on Main Street.

Patsy Glynn Snr captured the momentand the photograph appeared in manynewspapers and in the Vintner’s magazinewith the caption ‘customers come in allshapes and sizes’. When Cindy died inAthenry in 1972, there was much discussionas to where she would be buried. CastlereaTowns Trust offered a site in the Demesneand Cindy was buried there. It wasn’t until2014 that Seán Browne got the brainwaveto mark the grave site and with the help oflocal businessmen Benny O’Connell andJohn Keenan and the expertise of stonemason Declan Hawthorne, his dreambecame a reality. Chris Kane fromWilliamstown wrote the epitaph. The gravehas become quite popular with locals andvisitors alike. If you’d like to visit Cindy’sgrave, enter the Demesne through the gateon the Ballindrimley Road and walk alongthe path until you are opposite theentrance to Cahill’s SuperValu / Mart.

FarmYard in Your SchoolYard have beensuccessful in a bid to deliver fun andinteractive anti-litter workshops to lots ofpupils in their schools throughout CountySligo. Sligo County Council have giventheir support to Farmer John and FarmerLucy to bring their farm animals to schoolsto help them spread the word that litterhas a negative impact on animals.

The county wide initiative was launched

at Taunagh NS in Riverstown on Thursday19th September and pupils there wereabsolutely delighted to participate. “Itwas a beautiful sunny day and the pupilssat in their outside classroom” said ImeldaRyan-Jones, Green-Schools Officer “whichthey won in a competition run by SligoCounty Council a number of years ago. Thepupils listened to Farmer John’s soundadvice and stories he had created toensure everyone makes more efforts tokeep our streets, roads and fields litterfree.”

Taunagh NS successfully achieved theirfirst Green Flag, for the theme of Litter &Waste, earlier this year. The children hadcreated their own Green Code “Litter is sobitter, don’t scream and shout. Put it inthe bin, that’s what it’s all about”.

“Farmer John was impressed with whatthe children already knew” said Imelda“and fully engaged them to learn furtherwhen he shared a newly created book, handmade by Farmer Lucy, entitled The KitKat Man. “

Following stories and lots of examples oflitter that can hurt animals the childrenhad the opportunity to get up close andcuddly time with a range of hand rearedfarm animals. For some children this wasthe first time they had held baby chicks, rabbits, guinea pigs and hens.

Lots of other schools in the county willbe receiving free visits from FarmYard inYour SchoolYard and these includeCoolbock NS, Ardkeeran NS, Sooey NS,Kilross NS, Knockminna NS, KilmactrannyNS, Scoil Mhuire gan Smal in Ballymote,Dromore West C.N.S, St Aidan’s NS inMonasteraden, Scoil Noamh Molaise inGrange, Rathcormac NS, Scoil Ursula,Mercy Primary, St John’s NS in Sligo Town,Holy Family NS in Tubbercurry, RansboroNS, St Cecilias Special School, BallintogherNS and the newly amalgamated Boys andGirls NS in Collooney.

Ameeting in the McWilliam ParkHotel, Claremorris, early inOctober should be of major

interest to people concerned about thefuture role of women in the CatholicChurch.

Why did a group of women from theKillaloe Diocese in Clare challenge theirBishop over his plan to introduce amale only permanent Diaconate? Itbegs the fundamental question, “Canwomen’s voices be heard in the churchof Pope Francis?”

Kathleen McDonnell from Clare isheartened by the huge response afterthey challenged their Bishop, who hassince cancelled plans for an all-maleDiaconate. Support for the women hasbeen widespread and diverse.

The Clare women are committedChurch members, not people on thefringe, but very active members. Theyhave experience as retreat facilitatorsand being members of parish and

diocesan pastoral councils. Whatconcerns them most is the church’sseeming inability to connectmeaningfully with people who aredrifting away.

Kathleen McDonnell will address theissue, ‘Why Women felt compelled tospeak out in Killaloe Diocese’ and willbe followed by well-known Jesuitpriest, Gerry O’Hanlon, on the topic,‘Is Pope Francis willing to nurture aninclusive Church? The meeting is in TheMcWilliam Park Hotel, Claremorris onSat October 11th from 2.00-4.30pm.Admission is free and all are welcome.

Ashford Castle attends Launch OfNew Tourism StrategyTourism Ireland unveils new strategy toboost tourism from Canada ~Canada offers significant potential for Irishtourism, according to a Tourism Irelandstrategy launched today by Minister forTransport, Tourism and Sport, Paschal Dono-hoe TD. A new plan, ‘Canada: Land of Op-portunity – A Strategy for Growth2014-2016’, sets out challenging and ambi-tious targets which will see the number ofCanadian visitors to the island of Irelandgrow by +47% to 184,000 by the end of2016, delivering revenue of €134 million(+47% growth).PIC SHOWS: Niall Gibbons and Alison Met-calfe, both Tourism Ireland; Éilish Wall, Ash-ford Castle, Cong; and Tom McPherson, TheWestin Dublin, at the launch of Tourism Ire-land’s new plan, ‘Canada: Land of Opportu-nity – A Strategy for Growth 2014-2016’.

Farmers in the north-west, in tandemwith those throughout the country, have been demonstrating in recent

weeks to highlight the unfair treatmentby the meat processing industry. Theygathered in numbers at Dunnes Stores,Ballina, to vent their frustration.

Tommy Robinson, a local member ofIFA, outlined the situation clearly toNorth West Express:

At present farmers are getting €3.60per kg for beef supplied to factories

while this beef is sold in supermarkets atbetween €15.00 and €30.00 per kg. Thisrepresents a loss on production costs of€200 to €300 per animal for the farmer.Teagasc have established that farmerswould need at least €4.00 per kg. to justbreak even.

The situation is further compounded bythe meat industry imposing unrealisticand unnecessary specifications, i.e. if ananimal is one day over thirty months olda deduction of 30c per kg. is imposed.

Also, if the animal is over a certainweight or under or over-fat, penaltiesapply.

The only ones benefiting from theunfair treatment of farmers is factoriesand retailers. Bord Bia have establishedthat not only are the low prices not beingpassed on to the housewife, but meatprices have risen in the past year.

The IFA are calling on the Minister forAgriculture to step in and take control ofthe situation before it’s too late.

Could Facial Recognition Help ID Jihadi John?

SALESEXECUTIVE

WANTEDFor more details contact Seamus on

085-2498067 or email [email protected]

Facial recognition software could beused to help identify the Islamic Statemilitant thought to have killed a

Briton and two Americans in propagandavideos.Footage has been released over the lastmonth apparently showing the murders ofUS journalists James Foley and Steven Sot-loff, and British aid worker David Haines.

The IS militant - who speaks with asouthern English accent and has beendubbed Jihadi John - shows only his eyesin all three videos, none of which havevery high resolution.

Hugh Carr-Archer, chief executive of Au-rora Biometrics, a facial recognition firmbased near Northampton, told Sky News:"To be frank, the video itself is not goingto be very useful.

"Because once you start blowing it up,looking at fingers, looking at eyes, youlose definition.”

However, partial face recognition is anestablished technology.

The software is not dissimilar from full-face recognition and treats the suspect'sface as a 2D image. It then identifies thefeatures, picking out points on the eyes, nose, eyebrows and chin, among others.

t analyses their relative position to cre-ate a point map, then matches that mapagainst a database. It can match a millionfaces per second.

With partial face recognition, the visible

part of the face is extracted - in this case, the rectangle of the balaclava.

That small section is mapped to ageneric face, which can also be matched. The approximation is more hypothetical, and rougher, but can still be useful.

Canadian firm Face Forensics specialisesin partial face recognition, and its soft-ware powers the UK's ChildBase system -used to identify paedophile suspects.

Chief executive Iain Drummond told SkyNews that for the system to work by itself,

the video would ideally need double theresolution. But it could still be used as thebasis for more advanced analysis.

"At that level you’re just not gettingenough information to differentiate oneface from another," he said.

"There are tools of course that can en-hance images so if you can enhance thatimage itself, then obviously the facerecognition system will have a much bet-ter chance of coming up with a likelymatch."

We live in a world of evergrowing energy-awareness.Increasing home heating

costs driven by fluctuating fuelprices mean we must try to useenergy as efficiently andsustainably as possible, withoutcompromising the comfort of ourhomes, workplaces and public

buildings. The aim of this leaflet is to givehouseholders an informative guideto the various home heatingsystems available, and theirrelative merits. Perhaps you want to improve theefficiency of your existing heatingsystem? Or maybe you wish to learn

about the most up to date homeheating technologies? If so, thisbooklet will give you clear, conciseguidance on how to create warmthand comfort in your home, in waysthat will help the environment andyour pocket.

Wrap up well

Before examining your heatingsystem, it is important to reviewhow well your house is insulated. For example, fitting draughtexcluders around windows anddoors, where no draught protectionis in place, can cut heat loss by asmuch as 20% in winter.Investing in high-grade insulationdoes more than cut down on heatloss. It also means that once yourhome is heated to the requiredtemperature, it is easier for yourheating system to maintain thistemperature, so it uses less energy.Insulating your home can give longterm benefits through reducedrunning costs. Capital investment inyour heating system will also bereduced, as a smaller, moreefficient heating unit will berequired. For further information on how toeffectively seal your home consultSEAI’s Guide to Insulating YourHome.

Fuel – choose the sustainableoptionThere are a number of factors toconsider when selecting the type of

fuel for your home. For example, availability, storage and cost allhave to be taken into account. Butjust as important are theenvironmental impacts your choiceof fuel will have. Most of the energy we use in Irelandcomes from fossil fuels - oil, coal, peat and gas. These are notrenewable – once they are gone, they cannot be replenished. Burningfossil fuels releases carbon dioxide(CO2) into the atmosphere. This is amajor contributor to climatechange. The sustainable alternative to fossilfuels is renewable energy and thiswill never be exhausted. Renewableenergy is available to us in manyforms.

Heat – meet your annual heatdemandThe total amount of heat requiredfor a dwelling is called its AnnualHeat Demand. This is a factor of:The Annual Heat Demand for ahouse will determine the requiredpower output of the heat generatorto be installed. It can be met fromtwo main types of heating systems.

Organisers of the Give AndTake pyramid scheme toldtheir backers "they couldn't

lose" - but 88% never received apenny. Nine women have beenconvicted for their role in apyramid scheme which sawthousands of women lose at least£3,000 each.

The gang encouragedvulnerable women to "beg, borrow or steal" the cash neededto join the scam - and promisedparticipants a payout of £24,000within a matter of weeks.

But of the 10,000 peopleinvolved in the "Give And Take"ploy, 88% lost their entireinvestment - with some victimsploughing as much as £15,000 intothe scheme.

Meanwhile, committeemembers behind the fraudpocketed up to £92,000 each, andwere able to continue the schemebecause their members weresworn to secrecy, and bannedfrom writing about it.

At lavish parties held at a hotelrun by one of the organisers, hopeful guests were told "youcan't lose" in inspirational talks bythe chairwoman of the scheme,Laura Fox. Miles Bennett, prosecuting at Bristol CrownCourt, said: "This wasn't a bunchof ladies sitting around playingbridge. This was a committee andFox ruled these nights with a rodof iron. "This was a pyramid

promotional scheme wherepeople were invited to give£3,000, with the promise theywould receive £24,000. Wouldn'tit be wonderful if life was thatsimple? "It is clear that, blindedby the possibility of riches andquick bucks, people were quiteprepared to ignore the obviouspitfalls of a pyramid scheme."

The Give And Take scheme, alsoknown as Key To A Fortune, beganin April 2008, and ran for 11months. It was only when asuspicious member of the publiccontacted Trading Standards that

the scale of the scam come tolight. A total of eleven women, aged between 34 and 69, wereprosecuted for their allegedinvolvement in the pyramidscheme. Chairman Laura Fox,Carol Chalmers and JenniferSmith-Hayes were found guilty ofoperating the pyramid scheme in2012, and were each sentencedto nine months in prison.

Sally Phillips, Jane Smith andRita Lomas were handedsuspended prison sentences afterthey admitted promoting thescam. Three others - Mary Nash,

Susan Crane and Hazel Cameron -are due to be sentenced foroperating and promoting Give AndTake in October.

Rhalina Yuli was acquittedduring the trials, while two juriescouldn't reach a verdict on thecharges Tracey Laurence faced.

The Office of Fair Tradingestimates that 480,000 adults fallvictim to pyramid schemes everyyear, losing more than £900 eachon average. But according totheir research, only 1% of thoseaffected report their losses to theauthorities.

Body Odour TestsFor Taxi DriversCause Stink

A recently noticed rule under which taxiinspectors in a California city can penalisecabbies who are judged to smell bad iscausing a stink.

Drivers are up in deodorised arms over thecriterion, which is one of dozens used by SanDiego Regional Airport Authority officials tograde taxi drivers.

Anyone who fails the smell test can beordered to change before picking up anothercustomer. The United Taxi Workers of SanDiego says such tests reek of prejudice, fuelling a stereotype that foreign-born taxidrivers smell bad.

Sarah Saez, an organiser with the union, told KPBS: "It's demeaning and it is borderlineracist, I believe."

Inspectors have been sniffing drivers foryears, but controversy arose recently when aunion employee spotted the checklist in anairport board agenda.

One driver, Negus Gebrenarian, 39, fromEthiopia, told AP news agency that bad smellscan just as easily come from customers.

Inspectors with the airport authority alsomonitor a vehicle's "foul interior odours",including petrol, vomit or mildew.

The officials check, too, such criteria asproof of insurance and faulty windscreenwipers or brakes.

The airport authority says it is merelyenforcing the San Diego Metropolitan TransitSystem's policy, which promotes frequentbathing by drivers.

Airport authority spokeswoman RebeccaBloomfield said: "Taxi drivers are often thefirst impression that travellers receive whenarriving into San Diego and we want toencourage a positive experience."

Only about three drivers fail to get apassing grade each year, she added.

A survey of San Diego taxi drivers last yearfound 94% were immigrants and 65% werefrom East Africa.

'Thinspiration' Fears Over EatingDisorder RiseIt was recently reported on

Sky News that the number ofhospital admissions for

eating disorders in Englandhave increased by nearly 25%over the past three years. Theprovisional figures released bythe Health and Social CareInformation Centre indicate arise among both women andmen. In the year 2011-2012there were 2,285 hospitaladmissions, rising to 2,855 in2013-2014. Among men, thefigure has risen from 214 to249, and among women from2,071 to 2,606, an even largerincrease. Eating disordercharities have also told SkyNews that in recent years morepeople appear to be engagingwith the social mediaphenomenon known as"thinspiration".

Young people from Sky News'Stand Up Be Counted campaignflagged it up as an issue, wherepeople post photographs ofemaciated bodies to "inspire"weight loss. While charities say"thinspiration" on social media

is not the cause of an eatingdisorder, it could be making itworse. Susan Ringwood, chiefexecutive of the eating disordercharity Beat, says peopleaccessing it will often notrecognise they have an illness.

"They strive to be perfect inevery way - including the mostperfect anorexic - and that canmean trying to become eventhinner than the pictures onthese sites.

"Yet those pictures are veryunlikely to be 'real'.

"They are digitallymanipulated to make thebodies shown appear extremelyemaciated. Altered pictures offamous people are oftenincluded too."

Sophie Clayton, 22, hassuffered with anorexia sinceshe was 12 years old.

She used to scour socialmedia for "thinspiration" for upto six hours a day when she wasat her worst.

She said it was an online"community" where she couldfeel supported "in a really

horrible way". "I want toincrease the awareness thatthis isn't right. It's aboutshowing people that, yes this isout there, but actually youdon't need to aspire to this. This is mental illness, this isemaciated bodies, this is deathreally," she said. While somesocial networks have alreadytaken action, Sophie wantsmore to take responsibility forcontent. "Possibly putting amessage up if you type in a tag(like thinspiration) saying 'we'reworried about you, look at this

for eating disorders',information about eatingdisorders would be really good.

"I know that's increasing now,but when I was veryunderweight there was noinformation." The charity Beatsays banning sites could causethe issue to be drivenunderground. Ms Ringwood saidthe answer lay in "providing asense of acceptance andsupport throughout society, sothat a pro-ana site is no longerthe only refuge a person feelsthey can seek".

Sophie Clayton used to scour social media for 'thinspiration' for hours

There areconsiderations, such asprice and finding help,

to take into considerationwhen selecting your kitchencabinets. Below areinformation that shouldhelp you:

Units for Corner SpacesMore options exist forcorners than for any otherkitchen cabinet space. Unitsdesigned specifically forcorners make the best useof available space. Thesimplest corner pieces buttone cabinet up againstanother, which cuts off easyaccess to the corner. A better choice would bediagonal units with a larger

door, or double-door unitswhich provide full access tothe space. You might alsowant to add carousel orother slide-out accessoriesso items that werepreviously hard-to-reachare now easily at hand.

Quality CheckDetermine the quality of

your cabinetry by examiningthe drawers - they aresubject to the most wearand tear of any part of theunit. Compare the drawersof several different makes, and you'll likely see thatjoinery and qualitydifferences are apparent.

If drawer guides andcabinet hinges are not

adjustable - you should beable to fine-tune them withthe cabinets in place - thenyou will likely run intoproblems later.

With some framelessunits, adjustable mountinghardware lets you re-levelthe cabinets even afteryou've installed them.

Check that drawer glidesallow full extension ofdrawers, and that doors anddrawers are properlyaligned.

Service HelpSimply deciding on the

look and layout of yourkitchen cabinets is notenough. Part of the cost ofsome of these items

includes service andinstallation help.

A kitchen designer canhelp you figure out how tomake best use of yourspace. Some retailers willask you to fill out a surveyso that they can zero in onthe improvements you needfor your kitchen - you mightneed a specialty area forcooking, or an extra-largedining area for entertainingguests. As well, you mayneed extra space in theform of pantries for storingbulk food purchases. Allthese needs should be takeninto consideration to helpweigh your options.

Go to a showroom whichdisplays many lines of

cabinets - you'll get a morecomplete picture of what isout there, and what youwant. Find a designer whosetastes coincide with yourown, then together you canchoose a look and searchfor the items that fit nicelyinto your concept of anideal kitchen. The designercan also help you findreasonably priced units withhigh-quality craftsmanship. If you're serious aboutbuying, make arrangementsto meet a designer or acabinetmaker in ashowroom. Some places willalso carry the other kitchencomponents you may need, such as counters, sinks, appliances, and fixtures.

Some designers may havecontracts to promote aparticular cabinet productline, so don't rely on oneopinion alone. See a fewdifferent people, and ask ifthey are truly independentcontractors. Bring a copy ofyour base plan map as wellas the floor plan youdevised for cabinet

placement. If budget is abig concern, try shopping inplaces where designservices aren't necessarilytacked onto the price of thecabinets. But rememberthat with a less expensiveprice tag comes morepersonal responsibility -you'll have to be extra keenabout the accuracy of eachstep, and not rely as heavilyon an expert's advice.Pricing Units

The wide range of pricesand styles can make buyingcabinets a little tricky.

But as long as you haveyour floor plan sketchedout, personal style chosen, and budget considerationsin mind, you should have notrouble getting a base pricefor appropriate standardcabinets. These prices aredetermined by the style ofthe doors and drawers, aswell as the materials usedin the construction of thebasic carcass. Butremember that each optionand add-on will alter theoriginal quoted price.

Forewarned is forearmed, especially when it comes torenovating.

Prepare yourself with lessonslearned, expert advice and our bestmoney-saving tips - before you pickup the sledgehammer!

1. Getting startedAvoid: Starting the renovationbefore getting a feel for the houseSolutions: Live in a house throughas many seasons as possible beforeyou start any major changes -unless the building is about tocollapse! Rather than attempting todesign your own blueprint, thepriorities in the early stages shouldbe a schedule of your needs andwishes, a master plan of how toachieve them and a budget,. A big-picture vision can prevent extracosts on electrical and structuralwork. Design and decorativeelements are equally important.Slowly gather inspiration for yourmood board - a batch of pagesfrom magazines, fabric swatches, design postcards and furniturebrochures - to convey your visualpassions.

2. Assembling a teamAvoid: Hiring a team withoutcomparing prices and personalitiesSolutions: Cheapest isn't alwaysbest when putting together theteam - a person's workmanship, commitment, managementexperience, communication skillsand availability should be the majorpriorities. You'll save in the long-term withsomeone who can take educatedshortcuts, work faster and who willmake less errors. A buildingdesigner or draftsperson can keepcosts down for a simple house

extension, but for a new build or anextensive reno, an architect is theticket. They can advise you oneverything from design, planningand managing the budget todesigning the interior, landscapingand even checking the builder'sinvoices. An architect's fees arearound 10-15 per cent of theproject value. To find a localarchitect, visit the Institute ofArchitects' website atwww.architecture.ie. They're alsoexperienced in dealing with localcouncils. Many architects willrecommend their regular builders;talk to at least three to comparepackages and check references.Rather than just relying on thebuilder's references, talk to theowners themselves. Prospectivetrades people need to show homewarranty insurance and public

liability insurance. Be sure thatyour trades people are covered forworkers' compensation by theiremployer.

3. Controlling the budget Avoid: Being unprepared for anunexpected budget blow-out Solutions:While an architect canestimate upcoming costs, aquantity surveyor will supply amore detailed price expectation. The break down the building intoelements, such as floors and walls, and amend the cost depending onthe materials.

Keep a log of all products andmaterials used and changes made -each decision to upgrade adds upand could blow your budget.

To help minimise risks, acontingency plan of 10-15 per centextra budget is imperative. All sorts

of things can go wrong - latentconditions get discovered and theyusually cost money..

During a major renovation, beprepared for a raft of specialistsbattering on your front door. Theseinclude engineers and buildingsurveyors, and the ever-increasinglist of consultants required by localcouncils, such as sustainabilityexperts. Visit your local council fora full list.

Consider the cost of rental fees ifyou move out during therenovation. Moving out could saveyou money - and sanity. When theowners move out, the house can befully gutted and will run on minimalelectricity and no hot water.Renting also saves time and moneybecause tradesmen don't have topack up each day.

4. Getting the timing rightAvoid: Thinking that the renovationwill run on time and to schedule Solutions: Timing is crucial. "If youhaven't ordered a kitchen beforeNovember, it probably won't beinstalled until February. You can beguaranteed that the factory willshut down over Christmas, makingthe kitchen at least a month late.Builders and architects take timeoff for holidays throughout the year.Ask them to confirm their vacationplans early on. Another slow downcan be the winter season. Buildersare entitled to extensions forwinter weather during the earlystages of the construction. Aim tocomplete construction beforeJanuary: The team can keepworking on the interiors throughoutthe bad weather

5. Starting the demolitionAvoid: Failing to show theconstruction plans to yourneighbours before lodging thedevelopment application Solutions:Consider showing site plans, elevations and shadow diagrams todirectly affected neighbours beforeapplying to the council. Loss ofprivacy and overshadowing arecommon complaints, so considerthe impact your design may haveearly to speed up the planning

approval process. After this hurdle, you, your

architect or building designer canlodge the development applicationwith the council before buildingcommences.

Patience is a virtue, sincecouncils are notoriously slow, and ifcomplaints are lodged, you mayhave to attend council meetings. Most councils require a constructioncertificate for building work tostart. Once done, the blissfulsounds of jackhammers can begin.

6. Keeping costs downAvoid: Project managing a fullrenovation yourself - it can costmoreSolutions: An architect can becommissioned for different stages, starting with the plans (preliminarysketches, briefing a structuralengineer and a quantity surveyor),the design development stage(preparation of the final design anddocumentation required for councilsubmissions) and contractadministration (tendering, signingof building contracts, siteinspections and monitoring thebuilder's progress). For a reasonably simple renovation,it may be possible to projectmanage the final stage yourself. Asa back-up, hire an architect on anhourly rate; they understand thespecifications, can solve difficultissues with the builder and spotflaws a layperson would nevernotice. Source fittings, lighting anddecorative elements yourself. Time and research is key toachieving a high-end look for afraction of the cost. You can often save money bynegotiating all the furniture fromone place, or offering to pay cash inexchange for a discount.

7. Adopting an eco attitudeAvoid: Assuming eco-sensitiveoptions are more expensive Solutions: Incorporating greensolutions into a design in the earlystages may have an initial addedcost, but they will more than payfor themselves in the long run. Byinstalling solar panels, you can

The Beginners’s Guide to home renovation

Page 21: Northwest Express

generate your own electricity, sav-ing money in the long term as wellas reducing greenhouse gas emis-sions. Design your renovation to work withthe seasons to regulate tempera-ture, humidity and air flow. Site ori-entation is critical to takeadvantage of solar power and cross-ventilation. Insulate and use mate-rials with good thermal mass (thosewhich absorb and release heatslowly, cutting down the need forheating and airconditioning). Workwith non-toxic products and avoidover-consumption. Use renewable resources wherepossible for energy, along with en-ergy-efficient appliances. Collectand store rain water for daily use.

8 Stepping OutsideAvoid: Failing to budget for land-scaping - Solutions: Consider the outdoorarea from the start and budget ac-cordingly. The first flush of enthusi-asm about prospective renovationsis all about the interior. Gardenlandscaping is often forgotten untilthe renovation is nearly complete, when there are no funds left. Con-sider the backyard during those firstconversations with an architect - itmight even be worth hiring a land-scape designer. Designate areas inyour garden for children and for re-laxing or entertaining. Build spaceswithin the garden that flow to areasthat have a destination , it might bea reading area, a place for outdoor

dining, or a spot to have a coffee.By designating those spaces andputting something there that peo-ple can use, the whole space be-comes more inviting."

9 The wow factorAvoid: Splurging on eye-catchingpieces that don't work well togetherSolutions: A well-executed job iswhere many elements just ‘settle' -not every piece needs to have the‘wow factor'. "A piece may not benoticed on its own but it can be in-trinsic to the overall design.Every decision has an impact whenrenovating. "If you go with a partic-ular type of tap, the hand rails andshowerhead have to work with that. That's where many renovators comeunstuck - they like this and theylike that but when they see it all to-gether, they realise it doesn't work.

An interior designer takes a prac-tical and cost-effective approach. They have access to all the latestmaterials, finishes and furniture de-

signs, They are able to think out-side of the box. Finalise hard sur-face finishes, wall and floorcolours, and fittings and fixtures inthe planning stages, but considersoft furnishings, furniture and dec-orative elements towards the end, keeping the big picture in mind.Consider it the fun part after allthe hard work!

10 the final stagesAvoid: Reaching completion datewith trades people still hard atwork

Solutions: The completion dateneeds to be finalised when settingup the building contract. It is im-portant to clients that the have afixed completion date as well as afixed price. The client is entitled todamages if the builder runs over. There is then a greater incentivefor a builder to finish on time."

Home warranty insurance ismandatory in some way, but onlyapplies to building projects where

the value of the work is above aspecified amount. This type of in-surance protects the home ownerfrom defective or faulty workwhere the builder becomes insol-vent, dies or disappears.

Once work has been completed,an architect or design professionalneeds to check for defects. If thereare faults - if walls are cracking, forexample, because of bad workman-ship - the builder should rectify anydamage. If the builder refuses, you'll need to lodge a complaint.Good builders rely on their reputa-tion, and will be prepared to comeback to make any repairs.

All home interior magazines give ideasand advise for the different styles ofhome decoration, but there are some

things which you should always have inmind when designing and decorating yourfirst apartment. If you keep in mind thepossible errors, then it is easier to avoidthem afterwards. We offer you some tipsthat will make you aware of the mostcommon decorating mistakes.

One of the most common decoratingmistakes – choosing the colour of thewalls first.

The market offers incredibly big variety ofcolours. Picking up the wall colour first willsignificantly narrow your options forfurniture and accessories. It will be muchmore difficult to find a sofa that matchesthe colour of your walls than finding theright furniture for you and then pick a

matching colour. Interior decoratingmistakes often happen when neglecting thissimple rule.

Do not underestimate the natural focalpoint in a roomIf an item or a piece offurniture is a natural focal point, for

example a fire place or a large window, take advantage of that and design thewhole interior around that point andemphasize this accent with a beautifuldecoration.

Do not put all furniture to the wallsDo not place any furniture, especially if youhave tight enough free space on the walls,or the living room to the kitchen is open. You’d better group the furniture and bringit to the center of the room. This wouldcreate a warm and cozy atmosphere forconversations. A console table behind thesofa is a beautiful way to divide the areas.

Do not put obstacles on the pathsOrganize your space so that you can movearound the room freely and withoutobstacles. Thus the room will look cleanand well-organized. We believe that a chairin front of the door or a table in an areawith a lot of movement is not a good idea.Leave enough room for easy access andmovement in the room.

Do not clutter your shelvesVarious old things are lovely memories anda personal element in the interior but youshould not overdo it. You better avoid theaccumulation of many small items in oneplace. Not every surface should be covered.

Try organising your collections in smallergroups.

Do not use colours and items that “fight”with each otherContrast is a beautiful thing and theeclectic style is actually a great way todecorate a room, but some colours andobjects of different styles just do not fitwell together.

GREY is having somethingof a moment. Thanks toa certain book and the

soon to launch film, the daysof grey being considered dulland boring are long gone. Thecolour has sex appeal and thisis certainly true when it comesto the world of interior design.Monochrome has been a hottrend for some time but addgrey into the mix alongsiderustic wood finishes andchrome detailing, and youhave something new and alto-gether warmer. This twist onmodern minimalism is packedwith attitude. Think slouchysofas, statement storage andanimal-inspired accessories,

for a look that’s the ultimatein contemporary cool, but withcomfort at its heart. To start, get back to basics with yourcolour scheme such as plainwhite walls and bare floor-boards; these provide the per-fect backdrop for a grey colourpalette. We don’t wantfrills or fussi-ness, so stripback the clutterfor a calmingspace that letsthe shapes andcontours of thefurniture andaccessoriesshine through.

The simple shape of the Hamil-ton corner sofa with its thincontemporary arms and deep, comfy seat cushions is a greatstarting point. Its pale grey colour provides agood base for adding varyingshades of grey cushions, throws and accessories. Givedepth to a monochromepalette by mixing up texturesand materials in mutedshades. When it comes towood, a rustic finish that high-lights the grains and grooves iskey. The Greenwich table andchairs shown in French greyand rustic oak mix are perfectfor this reason. This diningrange also comes with all theoccasional pieces like coffeetables nests tv units....etc. Sodon’t be afraid to embracegrey into your life – it’s moreexciting than you think!

CarpetCarpets were probably first made

by nomadic peoples to cover theearthen floor in their tents. It is notcertain however, if the Egyptians, the Chinese, or even the Mayas firstinvented carpet making. It is quitepossible that many peoples, none ofwhom were in contact with eachother, began to make carpets atabout the same time.

We can be certain however, thatby the fifth century BC carpetmaking had reached a high artisticlevel. This was proven by theRussian archaeologists Rudenko andGriaznov, who in 1949 discoveredthe oldest known “knotted” carpetin the Pazyryk valley, about 5000feet up on the Altai Mountains inSiberia.

Today, Carpet weaving is by farthe most widespread handicraft inIran; it is also the best-known oneabroad. Persian carpets are

renowned for their richness ofcolour, variety of patterns andquality of design.

Wooden FlooringWooden flooring made its

appearance in the Middle Ages, withsome of those 800-year old floorsstill in use today. The upper levelswere the most common placement, with the most expensive woodenfloors being stained colors, laid inpatterns, parquets and evenmarquetry. Less costly floors weredecorated with painted patternsand designs starting in the early1600’s, with the genesis probablybeing painted oilcloths which arestill popular today. Colonial timesbrought smooth pine woodenflooring boards, and the 18thcentury saw painting to simulatestone and simple checked patternscombined with floor cloths inelaborate wood floor designs and

marbelized diamond patterns beingvery common.

These were used primarily inhallways, dining rooms and parlors.Finer cuts of wood flooring andinlayed designs were limited to theformal and nicer rooms. The 19th century was characterizedby unfinished pine wooden flooringthat evolved to being stained andfinished by mid-century. Pine soonbecame subflooring as parquet gotpopular, with prefabricated parquetpatterns being sold to install oncloth yielding “wood carpet.”Herringbone oak parquet patternsabounded with the emergence ofcustom borders featured in diningrooms, libraries, and drawingrooms. The 20th century visited lighterwooden flooring in the 20’s and30’s, with strip oak the standard inthe 30’s, 40’s and 50’s. Peaking in 1956, wood flooring wasoverwhelmed by carpet followingthe FHA’s acceptance for new homeconstruction. Throughout the 60’sand 70’s hardwood flooring was aspecialty surface utilized veryselectively until the appearance, durability, health and maintenancebenefits returned it to favor againin the 80’s and 90’s.

Vinyl FlooringVinyl Flooring first came into beingas a light-weight and durable

building material during World WarII. As more and more use of thisproduct began being discovered, vinyl entered into the commercialmarket with a vengeance. Today, one very important usage of thischemical is in the flooring industryin the form of vinyl floor tiles.Depending on the composition ofthe material, vinyl tiles tend tohave variance in characteristics, leading to choices in terms ofwhether a given tile is more or lesssuitable to be installed in abathroom, doorway, or basement. In the VCT, for example, manufacturers add a printed designlayer created through a rotogravureprinting process. This design layer iswhat gives the vinyl floor tiles thosebeautiful designs and colors andsparkle, making them attractive. Itis in VCT again that manufacturerssheath a high-performance “wear”layer on top, in order to withstand

heavy duty traffic. It is not fornothing that these tiles are called“Resilience tiles”. They tend tobounce back from whatever impactand pressure they are subjected to,whether through footfalls or staticload. A few other notablecharacteristics of this product areas follows:

Diversity of designsThanks to technology, vinyl flooringtiles can imitate the look and feelof wood or ceramic floors, but atconsiderably less cost than thesemore expensive counterparts. It isvery easy to cut the tiles and givethem any shape; so the floor can beturned into a mosaic of designs andart. Company logos can be plantedon the floor through vinyl floortiles. Direction signs can beimpregnated on the floor using thisproduct… the list is as endless asyour imagination.

Insulate your home

Did you know that there are differentways to insulate the exterior walls ofyour home? The first step is to see

how the building was built: Are the wallsmade with cavity blocks, or is there twowalls built side by side with a cavity be-tween them. The latter is referred to ascavity wall.

Cavity Block StructureIf your home has cavity block structurethen there are two main options for insulat-ing your walls. The first is Internal Warm-board Insulation. Certified Tradesmen fix aninsulating board to the inside of the exter-nal walls of the building. An example of thiswould be a house built in the 50′s, with noexternal wall insulation. To meet current‘Part L’ Building Regulations, you wouldneed to add 92.5mm of Internal Wall Insula-tion. If there was 50mm of insulation al-ready on the wall, you would only need toadd 42.5mm top-up. By choosing contrac-tors registered with SEAI (Sustainable En-ergy Authority of Ireland), home owners canavail of the Better Energy Home Scheme, which provides substantial grants towardsthe cost of works. One major advantage ofwarmboard insulation is that you are nolonger heating the walls of the property. There are various types of internal warm-board, such as Kingspan Kooltherm andEasyBoard. The second method of insulatingCavity Block Structures is External Wall In-sulation, also known as an External Wrap. Inthis case, the contractor fixes dense insula-tion panels to the exterior of a buildingusing a bonding agent and mechanical fix-ings. On top of this there is a reinforcingmortar layer with glass fibre mesh and aprimer layer and a decorative render finishthat is available in many different colours.

Cavity Wall Structure If a building’s walls are constructed usingan outer leaf solid block, a cavity (normally100mm) and an inner leaf solid block, thenit is known as a Cavity Wall Structure. There is an additional retrofit insulation

method in this case known as Cavity WallPumped Insulation. A series of small holesare drilled in the structure and a bondedbead is pumped into the wall. The advan-tages of this method is that there is mini-mal disruption to the interior/exterior ofthe building.

Roof InsulationAn un-insulated or poorly insulated roofcosts you money and harms the environ-ment.There is now grant aid available throughthe SEAI Better Energy Homes scheme tohelp you improve your home using roof in-sulation.Up to 30% of the heat produced in yourhome may be escaping if your roof is unin-sulated. Ceiling level roof insulation is gen-erally the most cost effective of any energyefficiency upgrade made to a house andoften does not come with a large price tagwhen the potential savings are considered.Even if you already have insulation in yourroof, you may still be losing heat if it isdamaged, less than is necessary or incor-rectly installed. For example if you have athin or worn layer of insulation it would bebeneficial to replace it or improve its per-formance by adding another layer.

Case StudyMary has a four bedroom detached house150 m in size. She has an annual heatingbill of €1,600. Mary previously had 100mmof fibreglass insulation in her attic but de-cided to upgrade the insulation in her atticto the recommended 300mm following ad-vice from SEAI and the various contractorsshe rang. As well as resulting in more com-fortable living conditions, this simple lowcost measure now saves Mary over €250every year on her home heating bill. Marywas also able to secure grant aid from theBetter Energy Homes scheme to help herwith the cost of this. Typical costs for thistype of upgrade are approx. €700 - €1,000(excluding grant).

The Benefits of Roof Insulation• Reduction in heating bills • Increased comfort levels • Low capital cost• Short payback periods• Reduction in Greenhouse Gas

emissions

Effectiveness of InsulationThe effectiveness of an insulating materialis measured using a 'U-value'. A U-value is ameasure of how much heat is conductedthrough a material. Insulation installed cor-rectly will have a low U-value as it willallow only small amounts of heat to passthrough, thereby keeping your home warm.Homeowners availing of attic insulation

grants under the Better Energy Homesscheme should aim to achieve a U-value of0.13 W/m2K or better (i.e. lower). It isvital that you ask the installer that theprice quoted for will achieve the requiredU-value, or the best U-value that can beachieved in your circumstances.

Key Roof Insulation Facts and TipsIf you have a pitched roof with an atticspace, one of the simplest ceiling insulationmethods is to lay a quilt (Mineral Fibre,Glass Fibre, Hemp, Sheepswool materialsare all capable of satisfying the perform-ance requirements of the scheme). If this type of material is to be used, it isimportant to ensure that the quilt is in-stalled in two layers and in two directionsin order to ensure the maximum benefit isachieved. There are many other products that can in-sulate effectively at ceiling level. Whereyour contractor suggests that one of theseproducts is the best for you, have him ex-plain in detail the benefits and standardsassociated with the product. If you are con-sidering using a “multifoil” insulation inconjunction with another insulation mate-rial, it is important to check any installa-tion requirements with the supplier.

Attic StorageCompression can cause an insulating mate-rial to lose some of its insulating proper-ties. It is therefore important, wherepossible, to minimise the amount of itemsstored in the attic which may compact orcompress the insulating material. Wherestorage is required, laying a second roll ofinsulation (above the joists) is impracticaland in this situation, try to make certainthat the storage area set aside is locatedover an area of the house which has a lowerheating requirement, e.g. over bathroomsas opposed to the living/sitting room. Alter-native arrangements like raised storageareas above the level of the insulationcould also be discussed with your Contrac-tor.

VentilationPipe InsulationInsulation IntegrityInstalling insulation properly is very impor-tant. Where insulation is installed betweenjoists, it is important that it is cut tight andis installed with no gaps. Gaps between theinsulation will cause it to become less ef-fective as heat loss will occur in theseareas.VentilationAdequate ventilation is important in anattic to help prevent damp or mould fromoccurring. It is therefore important to en-sure ventilation openings at the eaves ofthe house are left unblocked after installa-tion of your insulation

Water Storage Tanks and PipesWhen an attic is insulated at ceiling level, its temperature is reduced, as most of theheat previously lost from the house throughthe attic is now being kept within thehouse. Therefore, it is necessary to insulatethe water tank and pipes to ensure thatthey will not freeze during cold weather. This will also help to minimise heating costsassociated with heating water.

WalkwayAdequate ventilation is important in anattic to help prevent damp or mould fromoccurring. It is therefore important to en-sure ventilation openings at the eaves ofthe house are left unblocked after installa-tion of your insulationYour insulation contractor should install apermanent walkway in your attic to ensureyou have easy access to cold water tanks orother fitted appliances.

Flat RoofIn many cases, it is easier and more cost ef-fective to insulate a flat roof internallyusing an insulated plasterboard. This meanslowering the height of the ceiling but maybe a better option than insulating exter-nally.

There's no secret to a greatnight’s sleep. Just followthese simple steps and say

goodbye to sleep problems.

Is your bed up to the job? Eventhe best bed in the world won’tlast forever. Chances are if it's tenyears old, or less if it's a cheapbed, it's probably past its best andisn't giving you the support youneed. Old mattresses are oftenthe biggest cause of sleepproblems.

Get your room right: Make yourroom your sleep sanctuary and nota storeroom or home office. Aroom dedicated to sleep will helpto eliminate sleep problems. It'sthat simple. So create a calming, restful space and de-clutter yourbedroom.

De-stress before bed: Everyoneneeds time to wind down beforebed, so make time for it. Take abath, listen to soothing music ortry a bit of yoga. We all have ourown way of relaxing, so findyours.

Good housekeeping: Unwelcomebedroom guests like dust mitescause allergens that can affectyour breathing and are a commoncause of sleep problems. Simple things like using a mattressprotector and keeping your roomwell ventilated will make a bigdifference.

Take more exercise: 20 to 30minutes exercise a day goes a longway to reduce common sleepproblems. So go for a walk, bikeride or swim, it helps relieve thestresses and strains of the day andis one of the best ways to makesure you get a refreshing night'ssleep.

Don't over indulge: Tea andcoffee may be great in themorning to get you going, but thelast thing you need when youwant to go to sleep. So avoidsleep problems, cut out thestimulants and go for relaxing hotmilky drinks or herbal teasinstead.

Can't sleep – don't count sheep, get up: Don't lie there thinkingabout why you can't get to sleep.

Get up, do something relaxing andgo back to bed when you feelsleepy again.

Firm support base bed advice:Solid or platform top divans, havea rigid, non spring top panel, often used with orthopaedicmattresses, these bases willtypically give the whole bed afirmer feel.

Sprung slatted base bed advice:The sprung slatted base is themost common way to support themattress on many of today’sbedsteads. Two rows of curved wooden slats, usually beech, run across thewidth of the bed and their bowedshape provides a mattress withextra spring support.Drawer base bed advice: The baseof your bed can do so much morethat provide a little extra support. Thanks to the number of options nowavailable with one, two, three orfour handy drawers to full sizeottomans, it can help you de-clutteryour room too.

Buying a mattress: Mattresses maylook pretty much the same from theoutside, but underneath there arehuge differences. To help you buy amattress that's right for you, here'sthe insiders guide to the ins and outsof our mattresses. When you buy amattress the cover is the first thingyou'll see. And whilst attractivedesigns are a plus, remember it willspend all of its life covered up.When you buy a mattress go for thebest quality covering you can. Wovenor knitted high quality viscose orcotton yarns will be comfortable, tough and tear resistant.

Quilting or tufting: Most mattressesare finished by either quilting ortufting. Quilting is where the outerfabric is stitched to the surfacefillings to create a comfortablesleeping surface surface. Tufting iswhere tapes are passed through themattress at regular intervals andsecured at each side by tags orwashers, to prevent movement ofthe upholstery within the mattress.Open coil: Probably the mostcommon type of mattress, springsare arranged in rows and connectedto one another, top and bottom, by aspiral helical wire. The thickness, orgauge, of the steel will determine

how hard or soft the mattress feels.

Pocket spring: Individual springs arecontained within their own clothpocket and positioned in rows. Thisdesign allows each spring to workindependently, supporting the bodyexactly where it needs it andprevents the age old problem of roll-together. Spring counts vary from 600

to up to 3 or even 4,000, and likeother types of mattresses are madein a range of tensions. Higher quality mattresses are oftenhand side stitched to increase theirlife expectancy. Pocket sprung mattresses aregenerally more expensive, and areused mainly in higher qualityproducts.

Memory foam: If you're looking tobuy a mattress, go for the ultimatein sleep comfort. Our exclusive NASAdeveloped Sensaform memory foamuses your body heat and weight tomould itself to your exact shape. This all-over, perfectly balancedsupport reduces stress on pressurepoints, improves circulation and caneven help alleviate back pain.

Solar Water HeatingHeating water is the second largestenergy use in typical householdsSolar water heaters can be a cost-effective way to generate hotwater for your home here inIreland. One square metre of Solar Panelson your roof receives theequivalent of more than 100 litresof oil in free solar energy per year. And as a matter of fact, this ismore than in Paris.

Ok. But what if the sun is not shining? No problem. A solar water heaternot only converts direct sunlightbut also indirect sunlight into heat,so it works even when the sky isovercast. True, there will be lesssolar heat available during thewinter, but a back-up heater willboost the water temperature. The result is 100% comfort at alltimes, with plenty of hot water fora fraction of the cost. Our panelshave been fully tested and comewith a 10 year Guarantee and areapproved for the SEI Greeener

• Passive, which don't. Most solar water heaters require awell-insulated storage tank. Solarstorage tanks have an additional

outlet and inlet connected to andfrom the collector. In two-tanksystems, the solar water heaterpreheats water before it entersthe conventional water heater. Inone-tank systems, the back-up

heater is combined withthe solar storage in onetank.

Solar CollectorsThere are two main formsof solar collectors orpanels on the market herein Ireland

Flat Plate collectors andEvacuated Tubecollectors. The main component ofach is the absorber, whichabsorbs solar radiationand converts it into heat. In a plate collector, theabsorber is in the form of

a flat, black plate in a shallowmetal container covered with oneor more layers of transparentglass or plastic; either air or aliquid is circulated through thecavity of the container. Heat is directly transferred fromthe absorber to the circulatingliquid (air, water) The absorber inan Evacuated tube collectorconsists of a relatively narrowstrip of copper with a selectiveblack coating bonded to a singlecopper tube. The tube contains aspecial fluid which evaporateswhen heated. This vapour risesand transfers heat to the watercirculating in the systems primarycircuit.

Evacuated tubes are moreefficient than flat platecollectors; consequently they takeup less space.

They are, however, moreexpensive that flat plate.Generally speaking, to produce agiven amount of hot water,

Whether using flat plate orevaporated tubes, the installationcosts will be roughly the same.

Rainwater HarvestingRainwater Harvesting SystemsIn Ireland, daily waterconsumption rate per person is148 litres. However, only 67 litresof this is used for personal hygiene andnutritional consumption. Thismeans that approximately 80litres of water per person on a daily basis do notneed to be high quality but whileusing water from the utility for allyour daily water requirements youare paying the same amount of

money for each litre of water. The water you are using for

washing your car, watering theplants and toilet flushing istreated to the drinking waterquality. It is possible to userainwater harvesting systems forsuch needs. They are widely usedin homes, farms, public buildingssuch as schools, hospitals, andhotels and many other facilities.

How do they harvest water? Its early versions were simplygathering the rainwater in a tank.Today, our rain harvesting systemsare much more improved andefficient with the addition of acouple of elements, such aspressure vessels, pumps andfilters.

A typical rainwater harvestingsystem has the followingelements:• A surface to catch water, this isgenerally found on your roof • Channels for water transportfrom catch surface to the storagetank • Filters to filter particles• Pumps and pressure vessels topressurise water and keep waterpressurised. • Water storage tank to storeready-to-use water. • Piping system to transport waterto the points of consumption.

What will be your savings? This is dependent on manyfactors. The most important oneis, which part Ireland you live in.This is important to know theannual rain figures for that area. Also the surface you will use forcatching the water plays an

important role in the calculations. When some average values aretaken, you can save about €1 foreach square meter of yourhorizontal water catch surfaceannually. Rainwater harvesting systems payfor themselves in a short time, generally a few years.

Installation and Maintenance of rainwaterharvesting systemsRainwater harvesting systemdesign and installation needsexperience and training. Systemsare designed to occupy minimumspace especially in your garden. For this purpose, undergroundtanks are used. The pipe system isconnected to the intended pointsof use. Pressurizing and pressuremaintaining elements in thesystems allow you to haveconstant water pressure in yourrainwater pipe system. Rainwaterharvesting system elements aremade of durable materials andhave a simple technical structure. These two features result inminimum maintenancerequirements for the overallsystem. You may only need toclean filters from time to timeand maybe some infrequentmaintenance may be required forpumps.

Finding enough space aroundthe home these days is asdifficult as finding more time

to yourself or more money to treatyourself with. We all search for it,but it somehow always remains justbeyond our grip.

Luckily, there are a few simpleand cost effective things we can doto create more space around thehouse. Here we take a look at oneof the most long term investmentsyou can make in a home that will

radically free up more space in thebedroom: fitted wardrobes withsliding doors.

Here's a look at the pros and consof this popular home design optionand an analysis of whether it's theright choice for your home.

What does it involve?Creating more space for storage issomething we could all benefitfrom. Sliding wardrobe doorscovering a wardrobe interior cancreate huge amounts of additionalspace in the bedroom. Also, theyoffer one the rare benefits of beingable to do this without hinderingthe design of the room. This isbecause the doors do not openoutwards into the room, meaningyou do not have to make spatialallowances for this within yourbedroom.

Will it look ugly? When most people think of spacemaximizing options for their room, cluttered shelves and flimsycabinets are usually the items thatcome to mind. Not only are thesefairly limited in terms of creatingreal additional space, they oftenimpair the overall style and feelthat has been created in the room.

This is where fitted wardrobeswith sliding doors really come intotheir own. Not only do they createsubstantial amounts of additionalspace for everything from clothingand footwear to spare bedding andlinen, they can be fitted in a stylethat complements and enhancesyour current style and bedroomatmosphere.

What styles are available?Always ensure you choose a

company that can provide abespoke wardrobe interior andsliding wardrobe doors thatenhances your current bedroomdesign - or your future plans ifyou're considering a bedroommakeover in years to come. For instance, if you prefer amodern and sleek interior designscheme, bold black glass slidingwardrobe doors are perfectlymatched to enhance the masculinedesign scheme. Alternatively, ifyou like light, open spaces, asliding door in classic cream andwalnut colour schemes shouldcomplement your own designscheme perfectly.Fitted wardrobes are a fairlypermanent alteration, meaningthey are naturally more expensivethan some of your other space-saving measures. This means theyare inappropriate if you're onlyrenting a property, or planning tomove to a new home shortly. However, they do help to addconsiderable value to the saleprice of any building - after all, wecan never have too much spaceand this is something which allprospective buyers will prioritisewhen viewing properties.

Alittle chuckle goes a long way when itcomes to maintaining your health.Body and soul have a laugh and you’ll

get happy!

“Laughter is an instant vacation.” WhenMilton Berle (pictured) said this, he wasn’ttoo far off, according to some researcherswho think laughter is like a wonder drugcapable of treating a host of maladiesrelated to stress and lifestyle.“Laughter therapy is making people laughfor healing purposes,” says AlbertNerenberg, a journalist, documentaryfilmmaker (for instance, Laughlology, in2009) and laugh-ologist, an expert wholectures on the science, practice andtherapeutic effects of laughter. He bringsthe therapy to the workplace to helprelieve stress and increase motivation, andto the health-care profession to promoteand maintain health. But he cautions,“Occasionally, you hear wild claims thatlaughter therapy cures cancer or a terminalillness. The therapy holds great promise, but there is a danger of creating falseexpectations.”

Researchers continue to study laughter’seffects and have made some discoveries onhow it benefits our well-being.

Brain chemicalsFrom a neurological perspective, pioneeringstudies by Dr. Lee Berk and Dr. Stanley Tanof Loma Linda University Medical Center inCalifornia have shown that laughing triggersa flood of pleasure-inducingneurotransmitters, like dopamine, in thebrain. Low levels of both these brainchemicals are associated with the winterblues and Seasonal Affective Disorder, which affects almost 20 per cent ofCanadians. Nerenberg has been using

laughter therapy to help treat drug addictsat a residential drug rehab centre locatednear the Quebec-U.S. border. “Laughingproduces dopamine in the brain much inthe same way as cocaine,” he explains, “soyou essentially substitute laughing fits fordrug addiction, addicting people to apositive behaviour rather than a negativeone. They’re after rushes and really don’tcare where they get them.”

Immune responseA depressed immune system is vulnerable tocolds and viruses. According to a 2001 studyin Alternative Therapies in Health andMedicine, laughter boosts the activity ofyour system’s natural killer cells and otherdefences by increasing the number ofantibody-producing cells. Laughterenhances the response of disease-killingcells such as gamma-interferon, disease-fighting protein; B cells, which producedisease-destroying antibodies; and T cells, key to immune system response.

Stress response“We once thought laughter was theopposite of crying, but it’s moreappropriate to think of it as the opposite ofstress,” explains Nerenberg. He sayslaughter affects the nervous and endocrinesystems by metabolizing stress hormones, which include cortisol and adrenaline, thefight-or-flight compounds released duringtimes of stress. Stress hormones bombardthe heart, forcing it to beat as if in aconstant state of fight or flight. Butlaughter appears to reduce the amount ofstress hormones your body produces.

Blood flowA good laugh can be good for your heart.Laughter helps expand capillaries, increasing blood and oxygen flowthroughout your body. This may helpprotect against heart attacks and strokes byrelaxing constricted blood vessels andpromoting relaxation, which may lowerlevels of cortisol, a hormone known tocontribute to high blood pressure, as doconstricted blood vessels. Researchers fromthe University of Texas at Austin measuredthe blood flow of 17 volunteers afterwatching a comedy or a documentary. Thecomedy group showed significantlyincreased heart rate and blood flow of 17per cent for up to 24 hours. Conversely, among the documentary viewers, bloodvessels constricted by 15 per cent.

Constricted arteries can lead to high bloodpressure.

Social benefitsLaughing with others is more powerful thanlaughing alone, so plan some face time withfriends. Sharing laughter is one of the mosteffective tools for keeping relationshipsstrong and resilient. Simply anticipatinglaughter was found to release beneficialhormones while lowering levels ofharmful chemicals in the body.Laughter can also stimulate creativethoughts that lead to a greater senseof self-worth and optimism.Speaking of optimismIn 2011, Nerenberg worked withMaxwell House on a survey aboutoptimism, and the results arepositive. Eighty-five per cent of us considerourselves optimistic; 86 per cent ofus feel that optimism is contagious;and 79 per cent of us try toencourage pessimists to be moreoptimistic.

Encourage your own healthieroutlook by adding these simplelaughter-inducing habits.

Smile early and often in the day; itproduces a mild hormonal changethat can improve your mood andproduce positive emotions. Smiling isthe beginning of laughter and, likelaughter, it’s contagious.

Look up at the ceiling, and you’llnotice a positive lift. There’s no

science to explain this, but it’s a fairlyuniversal phenomenon, says Nerenberg. Theopposite is true as well; if you walk aroundlooking down, you’ll start to feel down.

Fake it till you feel it Just going throughthe motions will trigger real laughter.Studies show the positive effects of smilingoccur even if the smile is fake; fakedlaughter also provides the same benefits.
