Native plants tend to be hardened to local weather conditions, adapted to the soil type and perhaps a bit more tolerant of local garden insects and diseases.While the natives are easy to grow, the task of successfully transplanting a desired native specimen from the wild is often difficult and must be done with consideration and care. The wet and cold days of winter are ideal times for moving native plants, but although they are hardy, it is often difficult for the homeowner to substitute the natural or native woodland environment that nature has provided.A gardener must first determine whether he or she can duplicate growing conditions that have gotten the plant to the transplanting stage. If the answer is “no”, then it is best to leave the plant in its natural environment.The homeowner also must decide before digging which native plants will fit a particular landscape best. It is foolish to select a native dogwood for a sunny location when the dogwood needs shade or overhead protection, such as a canopy of surrounding trees.In choosing the native plant to transplant, care should be taken against attempting to transplant an overly large specimen. Small plants usually are more vigorous, grow much faster and are easier to handle. Tag the plant in the wild while it has leaves and/or berries to be sure of a positive identification.If you do select a large native specimen, prune the root system before digging. Prune the plant’s lateral roots one growing season prior to transplanting by making spade cuts around the plant in winter while allowing the soil to remain in place.When transplanting, try to lift the plant by raising the ball of earth instead of yanking it out of the ground by tugging on the trunk.Plant a native specimen immediately after digging, placing it in the ground or planter at its normal growing depth. Water well after planting and mulch over the root area with leaves, straw or leaf mold.In pruning upper branches, end shoots of limbs should be cut back to compensate for loss of roots and to encourage new branching and foliage in the spring. Some of the foliage should be stripped or removed from evergreen plants.Among the more desirable and abundant native plants that may be transplanted now are dogwood, redbud, river birch, sassafras, cherry laurel, red cider, American holly, yaupon, native hawthorns, French mulberry, native oads, elms and maples.Regardless of your choice, be sure to transplant with care to ensure that the plant survives being moved and has the vigor to live out its normal lifespan. If you can’t be reasonably certain it will survive, leave it in its original environment.With azaleas in full bloom over most of the area, lace bugs may not be far behind.A small insect, the lace bug attacks azalea foliage, causing it to become stippled and gray.

The damage, however, does not become visible right away. The unsightly appearance it gives the plant is caused by the feeding of the insect on the foliage. Like aphids, lace bugs attack with a piercing-sucking mouthpart.Lace bugs are emerging from eggs laid last fall and deposited inside the leaf. Young lace bugs are black and have spines on the back. As they feed, they excrete a black fluid that may be observed on the underside of the foliage.Initial damage may appear as very small spots on the foliage near the mid-rib, then spread rapidly over the leaf’s surface, giving it a gray cast. This injured area will not re-green because the cells of the leaf have been killed.As the season’s blooming ends, check the plants for lace bugs. The adults will be dark on the bottom and the wings will have a silvery-white color and be very lacy in appearance. Hence, the name lace bug. There are two generations of the pest a year—after the spring bloom and in late August or early September. While it appears to occur throughout the season, plant damage is mainly related to attacks by early populations on the foliage.Control of lace bugs works best at times of hatch, after bloom and in early fall. To check the plants, inspect the underside of the foliage for signs of injury or live insects. No applications should be made if the insects are not found.Controls for lace bugs include Orthene OTTO, Ficam W, Mavrik 2E, Malathion or Lindane. Applications should be directed at the underside of the plants for best control. Most injury starts on the bottom of the plants and flares upward.Azalea gall, disease of the leaf, stem and bloom, is caused by the fungus Exobasidium vaccinii.A similar type of galling is produced on species of camellia. It is suspected that the problem in both plants is caused by the same organism.Seriousness of the disease varies from slight to severe, depending on environmental conditions and the attention it gets from the home gardener. In the average home azalea planting, it may be more alarming cosmetically by its disfiguring, unsightly appearance than in the damage it actually inflicts on the general health of the plant.On azaleas, the disease causes the leaves and flower parts to become thickened, curled, fleshy and pale green to white or pink. With age, the galls become hard and brown. The infection of the host often causes a swelling of infected parts, caused mainly by an abnormal increase in the size of the host cells rather than from an increase in their amount.In the home garden, where usually there are few azalea plants, the disease easily can be controlled by hand picking and destroying the galls as soon as they are spotted. If the galls are not picked from the plants, but are allowed to dry and fall to the ground, they will serve as a source of infection next spring.Because infection occurs only once a year, spraying with zineb or a fixed copper preparation prior to infection will help control the disease.

The disadvantage of roundabouts is the same thing. In a part of the state where anything over a 1% grade is considered Mount Everest, necessitating a major slowdown in vehicle speed to conquer, so too is a circle of concrete and yield signs, creating angst for too many drivers in this area.

A ROUNDABOUT WAY OF GETTING THERE by Tony Onellion

Louisiana drivers are learning to deal with a new way of motoring through intersections these days. Many communities are installing roundabouts, or traffic circles, as they are sometimes known. Previous roundabouts before 2007 had only existed in Alexandria, where a major one has been directing traffic for more than 50 years. It takes all the north and southbound traffic and spins it through the center of town, causing few problems and fewer accidents.

The advantage of roundabouts is that there are no traffic lights….no yellows to run, no acceleration to beat a light or make a light. Hence, fewer accidents and virtually no high speed incidents, because even the most callow and dumb Louisiana drivers have to slow down for an intersection that has no finite decisions based on a traffic light computer.

The naturally aggressive nature (except on rises or hills) of the New Orleans area driver means that many times the yield sign is ignored and the driver barrels through the sign into the circle behind another driver. This can create a vicious cycle of frenzied vehicle feeding and the poor timid, intelligent driver is stuck at their yield sign as the crazies continue to basically run a stop sign. The rule is relatively simple.

It may be a little complicated, but so is filling out an accident report and renting a replacement car while yours is in the shop. Part of the problem is that no local law enforcement branch wants to enforce roundabout driving etiquette and so the thoughtless, brain-dead and downright rude drivers get away with murder. If they tried their tactics at a four-way stop sign intersection, they’d be walking by now. People…learn to drive these things! Yes, they are a pain, but the accident rate is a mere fraction of what is was before they were installed. Yes, the Abita Springs and Slidell area Brownswitch circles are too small, but a little common sense and courtesy would take care of those situations.

However, the roundabout recently completed in Lacombe is big enough to be considered a traffic circle and only has two feeds into it. Perhaps the state could require all intersections be at least the size of the Lacombe location, as it gives all drivers plenty of visibility and room to maneuver. Brownswitch’s roundabout is coming off a hill and is on a slight incline. It’s also not very well illuminated. Requests to Parish President Pat Brister to improve the enforcement of traffic infractions at this location have fallen on deaf ears. Place a deputy at the location for a couple of days and write about 50 tickets and the word will get out fast. Roundabouts will be coming to a neighborhood near you soon. They will tie up your intersection for anywhere from two to five months during construction. But if you take them with a grain of salt, your blood pressure and perhaps your insurance rates, may both drop.

Slow down, observe traffic from both sides, and enter the circle behind the vehicle to your right if that vehicle is at the circle before you. If there is no vehicle to your right that will reach the circle before you,

then look to your left and yield to any vehicle in the circle or a driver to your immediate left at their yield sign at the same time or before you reach your sign.

Our communities and sometimes our schools do a less than credible job of teaching the finer points of entering a roundabout during driver’s training.
