The Dorset Players will host a Vermont Reads event at the Playhouse at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 3 with a staged reading of Paul Fleischman’s book “Bull Run.”

The book is a beautifully written novella that takes place during the Civil War, and is written in the first person from the point of view of 16 different characters – eight northerners and eight southerners. Maureen

Chaffee will direct the reading. Each year, communities

around the state have the oppor-tunity to bring people together to read, discuss and build activi-ties around the year’s selected book. In 2011, communities read the classic “To Kill a Mockingbird” by Harper Lee.

One of the caveats of the pro-gram is to have organizations collaborate. To that end, Chaffee has been working with Maple

Street School and Long Trail School to fill the roles.

The reading will also be per-formed at the Martha Canfield Library in Arlington on Sunday, Nov. 4 at 2 p.m. There is no admission charge for these events, which are sponsored by the Vermont Humanities Council and VPR and under-written by NRG Systems.

Dorset Players to Host Vermont Reads Event, November 3

Scarecrows, games, hay rides, music and more will take over Maple Street School on Saturday, Oct. 27, when the Third Annual Scarecrow Festival takes place from noon to 3 p.m.

Children and their families from around the Northshire region are welcome to attend the event, which also includes crafts, a book and toy sale, a bounce house, and a family photo booth. Families can also enjoy lunch at the school’s Harvest Café, which will be serving pizza and hotdogs for

the kids, sandwiches for adults, and baked goods for all.

This year’s featured guest is Alexandra Langstaff of Hullabaloo Danceshop. Langstaff will present her sig-nature movement classes in which dance combines with props and music to explore physical language and encour-age spontaneous creative think-ing. The classe, for children ages three and up, will be offered at 1:15 p.m. and is includ-ed in the price of admission.

The Family Photo Booth, where families can get dressed

up and have a series of photos taken will be available at a charge of $5.

Admission to the festival is $5 per child, and free for each accompanying adult. All pro-ceeds will benefit the Maple Street School Scholarship Fund, which provides financial aid to more than 30 percent of the school’s students.

Maple Street School is locat-ed at 322 Maple Street in Manchester Center. For more information, call Grace Bibens at 802-362-7137 or visit www.maplestreetschool.com.

Maginniss said that stores in the Community Food Cupboard are low this time of year, so the donations are greatly appreci-ated. “We hope to fill up a truck,” she commented.

The event, sponsored by the Manchester Chamber, will be held rain or shine. For more information, call 362-6313.

The Dorset Players will host the Hubbard Hall Opera Theater (HHOT) on Saturday, October 27 at the Dorset Playhouse, as the company presents a traveling piano production of Puccini’s “La Boheme” at 8 p.m.

The program, featuring 75 minutes of some of the most gorgeous music in the opera canon, will be semi-staged and sung in Italians, with accompa-niment by Michael Clement.

With its melodic score and poignant story of young love

and true friendships, “La Boheme” is one of the most fre-quently performed operas world wide. It premiered in Turin’s Teatro Regio in 1896. Set in the students’ quarter of 1830 Paris, it laughs as well as weeps.

The HHOT program will fea-ture up-and-coming area artists Vedrana Kalas as Mimi, Irina Petrik as Musetta, along with Minnesota-based Brian J. Kuhl as Rudolfo and the well-known Boston baritone, Kevin Kees as Marcello.

Founded in 2008 by Managing Artistic Director Alexina Jones, HHOT has consistently present-ed critically acclaimed shows, including the 2011 production of “Don Pasquale.” The produc-tion was recently awarded sec-ond place in the American Prize, a national competition for classical artists.

Tickets are $25 for adults and $21 for members and $10 for those 18 and under. To purchase, call the box office at 802-867-5777.
