It has been a very turbulent and for many people in our local community, distressing if not devastating, start to 2011. With flooding throughout Queensland hitting our very doorstep and cyclones laying waste to many of our Northern towns and cities, this has not been an easy couple of months for anyone. Our thoughts go out to those in the community who suffered loss or damage during this time and also to those who gave time and effort in rescue work, repair work, cleaning or anything else to help get life back to normal – you have our deepest respect and gratitude.

On a similar theme as we head into March and April, let us remember that we are heading towards ANZAC Day on Monday 25th April. Once again the club will play host for the RSL sub-branch as they hold their Dawn Service and 11 am service to commemorate not only this occasion but all those who have given, often their all, to serve their country and our way of life. All services will be held in the Memorial Gardens in front of the club.

This year sees an unusual combination of Easter falling at the same time as ANZAC Day with Sunday 24th April being Easter Sunday. This means that the club will be closed for Good Friday on the 22nd April, and following Easter Sunday (normal trading hours) we will not be open for full service until 1pm on ANZAC Day, Monday 25th.

March 1st also marks our change out of summer and into autumn! Not that the recent heat wave would give any indication that summer is giving up quite yet.

Marking the occasion however we will be launching our newest promotion and your chance to WIN a fabulous brand new Toyota Corolla Conquest hatchback. You can see it on show in the club foyer right now. It’s a fabulous car, packed with great features and extras so race in now and make sure you are a part of the weekly Sunday draws that could put you into the final draw on Sunday 1st May for your chance to win.

I would also like to take the opportunity to welcome back to Norths, the sensational Peter James who will bring his Treasure Day show with him, every Friday morning from 1st April at 10:30am (tickets on sale from 9:30am).

Peter has been performing his show around Queensland for a number of years and has a sensational following around Brisbane, the Sunshine and Gold coasts including his weekly spot at Jupiter’s Casino. It’s a great day out full of fantastic prizes and entertainment.

The club recently was host to Altiyan Childs with a sell-out of 850 people which was a fantastic night. One of Those Nights, the Eagles tribute show is on the first weekend of March and don’t miss our next show Elvis & Roy meet the Beetles on Saturday 7th of May. We try to ensure that there is a constant quality of shows coming through the club for you our members and your guests.

As well as the auditorium shows, there is always entertainment on throughout the club with free Tuesday and Thursday morning shows, and evening entertainment in the lounge Thursday through to Sunday. Check out further details inside, alongside details of a new Thursday night bingo session, our regular Monday evening Poker nights in the main lounge and our Tuesday night trivia.

Make sure you also pay us a visit on Wednesday nights for your chance to win big on the member’s “spin the wheel”. You could win up to $10,000 as this jackpots if not won each week!

We hope to see you around the club over the coming weeks and that you continue to enjoy your time here at Norths.

Australia’s Victoria Cross recipients from left Trooper Mark Donaldson,

Corporal Benjamin Roberts-Smith and ex Warrant Officer Keith Payne.

What words can describe a soldier who shows total disregard for his own safety and storm an enemy machine gun that had pinned down his own men. Or the corporal who alone and on foot crossed 80 metres of open ground in the middle of an ambush and under intense machine fire to rescue a wounded interpreter and carried him to safety before returning to help other wounded.

The dictionary definition of Corporal Benjamin Roberts-Smith and Trooper Mark Donaldson is simply hero.It is a word like many that has been overused in recent times, especially in the sporting arena where heros, icons and champions seem to be everywhere.So what is a more fitting way to describe these

6 Norths March-April ’11

Page 7: Norths Leagues & Services Club - Issue 19

two real heros?If you were privileged enough to meet these soldiers in uniform on Anzac Day you would see they were both wearing the most prized medal of all, the Victoria Cross.The last recipient of the Victoria Cross was Warrant Officer Keith Payne who serviced in the Vietnam war and undertook the daring rescue of more than forty men, many of them wounded.The fact that two outstanding Australian soldiers have received this most prized honour in recent years is a testament to the quality and bravery of the modern Australian soldier. It also says much about the war in Afghanistan where our soldiers face an enemy who are both formidable and deadly.Most of us can not begin to imagine being in a life threatening situation, let alone deliberately and without hesitation putting our life on the line for your country and for your mates.So as we prepare for Anzac Day we salute the ‘real heros’, our VC winners who deserve the gratitude and admiration of a nation.

Mateship at the heart of RSLWhen you talk about mates there is little doubt that Australians value this concept more than most. Indeed it is mateship that defines the way the national mateship of men and women is ingrained in our psyche and has helped build our nation.There is no greater mateship than that forged in battle, the complete reliance of soldiers on each other in adverse and often life threatening situations sees a mateship that is unbreakable and a band that sees men become as brothers.It is little wonder then that the modern RSL movement sees mateship as a key pillar for the organisation.The RSL was originally established in 1916 by

the diggers returning from WW1, and Gallipoli in particular. The main reasons for setting up the RSL were to:

1. To maintain the mateship and camaraderie established overseas;

2. To provide assistance to the wounded and injured on their return;

3. To provide assistance to the widows of those men and women killed on Active Service

4. To provide assistance to the families of those who were KIA, WIA or the families of those members who died after as a result of their wounds or illnesses; and

5. To provide a place for ex-diggers to meet and have a yarn

PROGRAM2011

The RSL of today still maintains these objectives. There is no rank structure within the RSL. All members are treated equally. The RSL is a not a profit organisation relying only on donations and fundraising activities. The Pine Rivers Sub-Branch was established at the end of WW 11, with its charter being presented on the 28th October 1945. The Sub-Branch was originally established in the School of Arts Hall near the Petrie Roundabout. In 1963, the then President Mr William Abell, organised the purchase of the land where the RSL now stands, and the relocation of the Sub-Branch building from Petrie to the present location. This building was originally located on the Petrie on Pine Dairy, moved to the Australian Paper Mill, and then donated to the RSL. It is still being used by the Sub-Branch today,

and is known as the William Abell Community Centre. Although we are co-located with Norths Leagues & Services Club and the Kallangur Memorial Bowls Club, we are not a club, we are purely an RSL Sub-Branch. We have no poker machines, Keno or other form of gambling. We also supply speakers to schools for their Anzac Day services if required.
