Extra Whittlesea pokies get the green lightWHITTLESEA council is losing itsbattle to stop problem gambling withthe Victorian Civil and Administrat-ive Tribunal overruling its opposi-tion to allow 10 more pokermachines in a bowling club.

VCAT recently approved the extramachines at the Whittlesea BowlsClub, despite acknowledging com-munity concerns.

Mayor Rex Griffin said VCAT’sdecision to uphold the Victorian

Commission for Gambling andLiquor Regulation approval toincrease the number of machinesfrom 40 to 50 was ‘‘disappointing’’.

‘‘The council is concerned aboutany net increase in the number ofpokie machines in the municipalityas well as being extremely concernedabout the harm caused by the exist-ing machines,’’ he said.

‘‘There is significantly more com-munity opposition than support for

an increase in the number of pokiesat the club and the club’s proposaldid not include immediate socialbenefit to the community.’’

VCAT ruled in favour of installingthe machines, despite noting that ‘‘itis clear that there is a real apprehen-sion in sections of the community ...that problem gambling is a seriousand increasing threat to the socialfabric of the community’’.

The eight-year-old St Joseph’s pri-mary school student provided a skin‘‘canvas’’ for local artist SuziFantauzzo (pictured, right, withHamish) .

‘‘The flag takes about 10 minutesto do, double the time of a normaldesign. I use a sponge to fill in the fullface then do the outline of the crossand the stars of the Southern Cross,’’said Mrs Fantauzzo of Doreen.

The mother of two began paintingfaces about four years ago.

‘‘I did the first face as a favour andnow it’s a full-time business,’’ shesaid. ‘‘I have always worked in thecorporate world doing administra-

tion, but face painting has taught meI can do anything I want and encour-age others to try.

She is self-taught and said ‘‘I runclasses, but have never been to one’’.

‘‘I can’t paint on paper or canvas,just faces, which is funny because wehave a famous artist VincentFantauzzo [a portrait painter whohas exhibited worldwide] in the fam-ily,’’ she said.

‘‘Girls love butterfly faces andboys Spider-Man, usually the boyscan’t wait to get home because theyhave a Spider-Man costume there.

‘‘The most challenging face was aGene Simmons of Kiss face for a manin his ’50s.

‘‘The biggest disappointment wasat a kid’s party where I had just doneall their faces then they ran out underthe sprinklers and all my work wa-shed off.’’

She said it took about five minutesto do standard designs using profes-sional non-toxic face paint.

‘‘I love working with children butnow I have to bribe my own two girlsif I want to practise on them becausethey are over it.’’

Job service tohelp disabledAN OUTREACH employment ser-vice to match disabled people withjobs is starting in Whittlesea.

CVGT Australia would start theservice by March 4 at a soon-to-be-decided office, which would com-plement its Epping office, CVGTPreston office manager EstelaAiello said.

The company’s disabilityemployment service in the Plentyregion would include a new branchoffice in Greensborough and com-munity outreach services inWhittlesea, Hurstbridge and EastDoncaster, as well as its existingoffices in Epping and Preston.

In an in-house competition, thePlenty team scored the highestnumber of job placements over thethree weeks before Christmas com-pared with eight other branches,and allowed the Plenty branch tomake a $1160 donation to RoyalChildren’s Hospital and the RotaryClub of Preston’s fight againstpoliomyelitis.

THE Doreen Residents ActionGroup is alarmed at proposed feehikes at the Victorian Civil andAdministrative Tribunal after itspent thousands of dollars to fight ahigh-rise development at the tribu-nal last year.

Group spokeswoman Lisa Law-rence said the group hired a barris-ter and won the case against a five-storey development in Laurimar,but VCAT fee increases could stopordinary people from taking action.

She said the tribunal’s proposal toincrease ‘‘commencement fees’’from $38 to $502 and possibly$1007 by 2015 would take ‘‘morethan a couple of sausage sizzles’’ tofund for community groups.

Ms Lawrence said if a councilrejected a proposal, it should be theapplicant, not the council or rate-payers opposing it, who should paythe majority of the VCAT costs.

Whittlesea council’s planning and

major projects acting directorMaria Cooke, said VCAT hadreleased its proposed fee structureand invited submissions by Febru-ary 15. She said the council wouldreview the fee structure and decidewhether to make a submission.

Under the fee proposal, it will be

25 times more expensive to initiatean action. Hearing fees includingmediation, which is a free serviceoften used to resolve a dispute with-out going to a hearing, would becharged on the likely number ofdays a case is expected to run.

The daily rate, additional to thecommencement fee, for hearings ofnormal cases would begin at$368.40 for days two to four, andgo up to $1028.70 for day 10 andany day afterwards.

Complex cases would cost $1834and those on the major case listwould cost $3226 a day. Melbournemetropolitan councils dealt with37,325 planning applications lastfinancial year, 3011 were reviewedat VCAT according to the Depart-ment of Planning and CommunityDevelopment’s annual report.

Fees for many of the cases VCAThears would increase to recover45 per cent of the cost of runningthe tribunal, or $22 million a year.

Municipal Association of Vic-toria president Bill McArthur saidthe new fees were a reaction to aplanning system that was past duefor review. ‘‘These fees were set in2000 and certainly don’t reflect cur-rent practices.’’

The move to a user-pays system isa blow to the public’s access to ju-stice, said shadow attorney-generalMartin Pakula. “If you massivelyincrease the fees as the governmentis proposing to do, many Victorianswill simply not be able to utilise thatcourt system.”

NORTHERN Health faces a $1.5 mil-lion budget deficit and cuts to electivesurgery and jobs as funding reductionskick in.

The organisation’s business per-formance executive director MareeCuddihy said despite the growingdemand for services in the north, a fed-eral government cut to funding wouldhit 400 elective surgeries and at least15 full-time jobs this year.

‘‘The northern community has beengrowing by 20 per cent per annumover the past 10 years and is made upof residents born in more than 180countries who speak more than 130languages,’’ she said. ‘‘NorthernHealth has proposed a $1.5 millionbudget deficit as a means to maintain abalance of clinical services.’’

Ms Cuddihy said the NorthernHealth board was considering further

cost reductions while aiming to min-imise impact on patient care.

‘‘The Northern Health board andexecutive have been keeping the stateand federal governments informedregarding funding reduction implica-tions and staff have been keptinformed,’’ she said.

‘‘From late December 2012 to midJanuary 2013, Northern Health hasreduced bed capacity for six weekshowever patients will continue to betreated.

‘‘Northern Health is situated in arapid growth corridor delivering 2694babies in the 2011-12 financial year.We’re on track to deliver over 3000babies in the 2012-13 financial year.

‘‘This continued demand for mater-nity services has a flow on effectto other areas within the healthservice. One of the impacts may be ourability to provide timely care to lesscritical patients.’’

POLICE fear the new suburbs ofWhittlesea will be a breeding groundfor gangs.

Inspector Bob Dykstra said the newhousing estates with young childrenand limited infrastructure, recreationand public transport could lead toyoung people becoming gang mem-bers, terrorising the community.

He said police expected problemsfrom now to the next 10 years butwere trying to address issues immedi-ately.

‘‘The police are liaising with thedevelopers [about amenities] and try-ing to influence the kids to make posit-ive choices,’’ Mr Dykstra said.

He said children on the new estateswere young and their activities weremischievous, rather than criminal.

‘‘But it might start with graffiti, goon to petty theft and then gangs.’’

Mr Dykstra said youngsters, boredbecause there was little to do, might

start gathering in groups and becomegangs.

He said groups of teenagers could al-so affect the community’s perceptionof safety. ‘‘You see a group of half adozen young people, and may not feelsafe.’’

He said housing estates in the north-ern suburbs had small blocks and lim-ited transport and activities, leading todisaffected youth.

Mr Dykstra said the design of manyhousing estates in the north meantlocal youths had little to do. He sup-ported the Whittlesea council’s call fora justice precinct in South Morang,including a new ‘‘super’’ police station,Magistrates’ Court and County Courton land surrounding Whittlesea Coun-cil offices in Ferres Boulevard.

The nectar of the gods starts on the fertile hills of Eden Park, where the fi rst burst of grape buds is full of promise. The vines are planted in grids according to variety, the limbs twisted around wire to form green-

topped T-shapes.It looks like a typical vineyard, with

regimental lines crossing the slopes in rows and tended by heavy, commercial machinery.

But the vineyard is an open-air classroom for Northern Melbourne Institute of TAFE (NMIT) and the winemakers who choose from this crop are anything but vintage.

They are novices in an age-old craft and have a burning passion to produce wine that will make sommeliers smile.

NMIT has a long, award-winning history

in viticulture, offering short courses through to degrees at its campuses, including Epping and Eden Park, and through online programs.

The head of NMIT’s viticulture programs is Dr Alastair Reed, a youthful academic who can’t hide his excitement when it comes to discussing wine.

His refl ection dances off the shiny, stainless-steel vats that dominate the institute’s multi-million-dollar commercial winemaking and bottling facility in Epping.

A huge grape crusher churns through tonnes of grapes. But Reed has not turned his back on the old ways of winemaking and the facility’s socio-cultural setting.

‘‘We are in the northern suburbs where there is a do-it-yourself winemaking culture and we respect that,’’ he says. ‘‘The residents

have their own traditions and embrace time-honoured winemaking techniques that we can learn from.’’

A simple example is the traditional juice-extraction method. Last year a student chose the old way of treading on grapes to get the juice for their wine.

‘‘Sarah, an online student from Geelong, came in to the Epping campus for four days last year, took off her shoes and foot-stomped the grapes," Reed says.

NMIT is no backyard wine-making venture. Its commercial winemaking centre can process 100 tonnes of grapes and produce a top-quality drop.

Students’ wines have received numerous accolades since NMIT produced its fi rst vintage in 1998. The wines have won gold,

silver and bronze medals across Australia, including a mention at the Royal Melbourne Show in the revered Jimmy Watson awards, in honour of the late wine bar owner from Lygon Street in Carlton.

The students learn everything about their craft, from cultivation and harvesting through to processing and then bottling, labelling and marketing.

The Bachelor of Viticulture and Winemaking has grown from a small, boutique degree to one of the largest in Australia.

And because it blends online learning with face-to face teaching, the course has opened up to students all around Australia. There are about 100 students on board for short courses up to certifi cates and degrees.

Long before a drop of wine reaches a glass, the students visit NMIT’s Eden Park campus near Whittlesea to learn about the properties of the grapes and the timing of the harvest.

Research scientist Sara White says the sugar content, or baume, varies depending on when the grapes are picked and it affects the alcohol level of the wine.

‘‘A big red is 15 baume,’’ she says. ‘‘But we also pick grapes early to prevent the sugar increasing.’’

Students sample grapes throughout the growing season to monitor sugar and acid levels, and inspect for disease to determine whether grapes should be picked sooner or later.

Other infl uences such as smoke from bushfi res can affect the grapes, and therefore

the quality of the wine. ‘‘It’s called smoke taint; grapes absorb the smoke and after 30 minutes of thick smoke it leaves a taste like a stale ashtray,’’ White says.

Grapes grown at NMIT vineyards are supplemented with fruit from commercial vineyards.

They are crushed, generally using a commercial crusher, although some students use a traditional basket press – a bin-shaped press with open slats on the side and a collection tray with a funnel to run the juice into a container. A handle on top turns the press down.

‘‘It’s very labour intensive, but the more you press, the better it is as there are more tannins,’’ says Reed.

To create a full-bodied red wine, the grape

skins are left in with the juice to develop strong tannins. The skins are removed to create a crisp white wine.

Students choose the style of fermentation containers, from towering steel vats to full-bottomed glass bottles or oak barrels. French oak barrels, which cost $1500 each, are built from 200-year-old timber, while American oak barrels cost $500. Each imparts a distinctive fl avour to the fermenting wine.

A commercial bottling line allows the students’ wines to be professionally presented with labels designed by fellow NMIT art students.

In educating the students’ palates, NMIT buys tainted wine and dilutes it by degrees until even the slightest hint of it can be tasted.

Coulston says cork taint has been eliminated by the use of screw top lids. Oxidation, caused by evaporation allowing oxygen into the top of the barrel during fermentation, is a problem.

The amount that evaporates is called the angel’s share and is said to be the amount of wine an angel takes from a fermenting wine barrel in return for vineyard blessings and other good deeds.

But the process leaves an air pocket above fermenting grape juice that can lead to oxidisation of the wine and a spoilt batch.

The angel’s share can turn the nectar of the gods into vinegar. �

There is something about growing old ‘‘disgracefully’’ that lit a spark in Kim Jacob’s heart.

He was 50 at the time but something about heading into the twilight years without a protest didn’t sit right.

So he did what he thinks all middle-aged people should – he joined the Ulysses Motorcycle Club and became president of the Whittlesea branch.

The national club has up to 60,000 old codgers – junior members are in their 40s and only graduate to senior membership at 50. People join the club, rather than one of 140 Australian or any of the overseas branches, but can ride with any branch.

Seven years on, Jacob is a proud member of a club which has a logo of a bespectacled old bloke with a beard, big nose and open face helmet.

The club’s name comes from a poem about how the great Greek hero Ulysses, in charge of his kingdom of Ithaca, was bored and longed to go adventuring with his old mates.

It describes the sort of person who has the

wanderlust to ride across the country in middle and later years, Jacob says.

The rebel in Jacob raised its head in childhood. ‘‘I have been riding since I was about 12 or 14 years old, not legally, of course,’’ he says. ‘‘My present ride is a [cruiser style] 2006 Suzuki Boulevard VZ800, I have had this bike for about 18 months. Prior to that I owned a 1997 Honda CBR600F, I still regret selling the Honda – it was so much fun to ride.’’

Fun seems to be the password at the club, which attracts dozens of people to its Saturday rides as well as its mid-week jaunts.

Ray Lane, 63, is a founding member of the Whittlesea branch, which started in 2000 with a handful of riders and now attracts about 60 on a Saturday ride.

He rode bikes as a kid and returned to biking when he was 40 because ‘‘you become a teenager again’’.

Lane’s mammoth rides include a trip to Townsville of about 4000 kilometres, double the usual distance, because ‘‘you zig zag your way across the country, taking in points of interest’’.

‘‘A two-day trip might take a week,’’ he says.‘‘Ulysses is not a motorcycle club. It is a

social club where everyone happens to like bikes.’’

Age is no barrier. One of the club’s older members, Don Miller, 76, rode across the Nullarbor to Albany, Western Australia with about a dozen other members a few years ago for the club’s annual general meeting.

‘‘I really enjoy it; you get a lot of time to think when you’re riding,’’ he says.

Many members tell a similar story of riding as teenagers then giving motorcycling away.

Ron Laurence, 66, rode a scooter when he was ‘‘young and foolish’’. He didn’t have a licence “because no one told me I had to have one’’.

Marriage and children led Laurence to turn to more conventional transport, but when he turned 45 the family car held little appeal and he returned to motorcycling.

‘‘I saw a motorcyclist wearing a logo with an old man’s smiling face and discovered the Ulysses Club,’’ he says. ‘‘Through the club I’ve met more people than I would have in a car club.

People with bikes wave to each other or pull up and say ‘nice bike’; car drivers never do. ’’

Laurence has switched to a trike with a lounge-chair style seat and takes his wife, Terri, on the back.

Sue Brabazon, 50, never rides pillion. She rides her own Suzuki 650 Burgman scooter because ‘‘I love the open road’’. ‘‘I live in Preston but love Whittlesea and getting out in the country,’’ she says.

‘‘I lost my brother in a motorbike accident. It sounds like a stupid reason to start riding seven years ago, but he was a member of Ulysses and loved it; so do I.’’

Brabazon says it is no different being a female rider. ‘‘All the members welcome you and share their knowledge.’’

And size doesn’t count when it comes to machines. Brabazon has ridden a Honda CT110 Postie Bike motorcycle – a lightweight 110cc machine designed for commercial and agricultural use – from Brisbane to Darwin in a 10-day Postie Bike Challenge, where riders bought then donated their bikes to charity.

‘‘It was great,’’ she says. �

As a coach, it’s easy to walk into a well-established club, take over the reins and enjoy the spoils.

Paul Miller, pictured left with fast bowler Ruwan Perera, took on the role at Bundoora United this season after three years at Gisborne District Cricket Association club Wallan, where they won a fl ag in his fi rst season.

“Basically I was looking to get back to metropolitan cricket, and for me, coaching is about challenges,” he says.

“There are a lot of jobs around at good clubs who are ready-made for success but the role at Bundoora United was a major point of difference for me. Talking to the guys ahead of the season, there was a real challenge there to make the club stronger on and off the fi eld and it’s one I’ve really enjoyed.”

The club, the Bulldogs, play in the Money Shield of the Diamond Valley Cricket Association, the league’s second-highest grade behind the Barclay Shield.

The Bulldogs have endured a lean trot in recent years, but currently sit seventh of 14 teams, battling with several teams for the fi nal spot in the top four.

They’ve won four of nine games, one more than they won in all of the 2011/12 season. Much of the improved showing this season can be attributed to right arm quick Perera, in his second season with Bundoora United.

After 10 games, the Sri Lankan has snared 36 wickets at the remarkable average of 11.11, to be one of the best bowlers in the competition. Last season he took a respectable 18 wickets.

Miller, 44, says the feedback on Perera’s progress has been positive. “Compared with last season it seems like he has come back a year older, understanding wickets better and knowing where he has to bowl,” he says.

“It was all a matter of getting his length right. He bowls a good line but this season he has been hitting the right length all year and opposition guys are really struggling.

“Apparently he is nowhere near as quick as he was last season but that’s perfectly fi ne because he’s sharp enough at this level and he’s bowling within himself ... If he keeps going this way, he’s going to push 50 wickets for the season.”

Miller still plays himself, opening the batting or in the middle order. His form has fl uctuated, with a 55 not out and 99 not out in two Twenty20 matches but only one half-century in the Money Shield.

With two games to the fi nals he says the side has a “good opportunity” with “winnable” matches. “For us to make it we have to win all four games,” he says.

“We rate ourselves a good chance but there’s not an easy game and it will go down to the last round.” �

the interview.Thanks to a tragi-comic combination of LA traffi c,

the new iPhone maps application and sheer out-of-town naïvety, I am running desperately late. Not fi ve or 10 minutes late, but half an hour. Half an hour late for a guy whose diary is no doubt divided into three-minute segments by his public relations team and whose day will later overlap with Ellen DeGeneres’.

As seconds tick away in standstill traffi c on Santa Monica Boulevard, I weigh up how I might express my penitence if he’s still there; I wonder if he will object to a vigorous apology manhug.

When I eventually do stumble into the bar of the W Hotel in Hollywood, sweating and apologising profusely, Stone shakes my hand fi rmly with his right and steadies me with his left – “You’re good mate, it’s OK,” he says – and then directs me to a table.

But fi rst he says: “These are my parents.” I shake their hands too. They are radiating pride and jetlag as they have just arrived in the States from Australia. Stone has picked them up from the airport. We sit down in the bar and start at the beginning.I read that you got your fi rst big break under Marco Pierre White by offering to work for him for free. Is that true?

“The easiest way to get a job as a cook is to walk in and say, ‘I want to work for you. I know your food. I’ve eaten it. I admire it, and I want to learn from you.’ Then, of course, anybody would take you on. You say, ‘I’ll work for free, and if I’m any good, pay me what I’m worth.’ Of course they’ll fi nd a job for you. But I do think it doesn’t really matter what industry it is; it matters that you show your dedication through your actions, not your words.”What are you doing here in LA?

“I came here by total accident, actually. I was living in London at the time and had been there for nine years. I was asked to shoot this pilot for the Discovery Channel over here and I was having my 30th birthday in Vegas; it was sort of halfway between the UK and Oz, and I thought half of my mates are from there, half are from here.

“They asked me to shoot the pilot right [for Take Home Chef] around that time, so I was like, I’m going anyway, so yeah I’ll do it. It sounded like a ridiculous concept – I literally had to go into a grocery store and ask someone what they were cooking for dinner that night, invite myself

back to their house, cook for them and surprise their husband – but it turned into a 140-episode series. I guess they thought someone with an accent could get away with it a bit more than just a local.”Did you know anyone in LA in those early days?

(Stone laughs) “I got here and was met by somebody from the production company and they said, ‘Here are the keys to your apartment, your mobile phone and there’s a car in the garage’. I can remember looking at the phone when he left and thinking, ‘I don’t even have anyone’s number to put in there’. I don’t know a single being here.”

“LA can be a lonely place. Because it’s so spread out and has no centre, it can feel like it has no soul.”Do you remember your fi rst few nights?

“I was in Pasadena. I walked down to the old town and went in a sushi joint and sat there and thought, ‘How weird is this?’.

“I was single and what else are you going to do but, you know, have a crack at LA? I don’t know if you’ve ever done it before, but just moving to a new city with nothing and no one; it’s confronting. Now I love it. It has so many personalities. Los Angeles is a horrible city to visit in many respects, but an incredible city to live in.”Where do you and Lindsay (Stone’s fi ancée, actress Lindsay Price, from Beverly Hills, 90210 and Lipstick Jungle, who he met on his “fi rst and last blind date”) live in Los Angeles?

“We actually live at the end of a cul-de-sac just about fi ve minutes away from here in Hollywood. Our house has this tiny little front, it doesn’t look like anything, and then you walk in and you walk through the house and our backyard really opens up onto this lake. In summertime you get crazy frogs that you can hear.”Do you have any advice on how to make it in LA?

“It’s funny. I get calls all the time from people I know in Australia saying, ‘Introduce me to your agent’. I’m like, ‘Sure, I will; go for it!’ But I feel like saying, ‘Don’t just walk up to an agent in LA and say, I’ve hosted a travel show; what do you think? Come and do the research about what sort of networks you’d want to work for, or what kind of shows you can keep your eyes on’.”Once you’ve found a potential niche for yourself, or your business, what’s the next step?

“I had a point of difference from day one because I was an Aussie. I was the only Aussie chef here as far as I knew. My brand – and I do hate speaking about it like that – speaks to certain audience members. I eat quite healthy compared with the other chefs in the marketplace. I probably look a bit healthier than some of them. You can make different alliances with that.”

Is living healthily a marketing angle or a lifestyle for you?“That’s how I live and how I feel about food, which makes

me really attractive to brands that want to promote health and fi tness. It’s a huge market in America. It’s the fastest-growing market in the food space, health and wellness.”You often sound more like an entrepreneur than a chef. Is that a side of yourself you’ve discovered and developed in LA?

“Yeah, I think that with LA comes brighter opportunities but in TV, the fact is you’re just a pawn within a bigger business. When you fi gure that out, you realise you have to put together a fantastic team and from there you can be more strategic; you can go after the bigger deals.

“You can then go to the agents and attorneys, who basically have access to everyone because they either represent them or their competitors, and you put together a plan. That’s how you get on shows like Oprah or Ellen or whatever it is; by reaching out and having a point of difference that works for that show, and being clever about the way you work with your publicist to pitch certain things.”You said your fi rst big break on the Discovery Channel was mostly dumb luck. Do you believe in fate?

“I’m kind of a believer that you’ll always end up in the same place, but there’s a million different routes to get there.”Do you know how overexposed you are back home? Coles has killed you.

“It’s wild, isn’t it? I’ve become the ‘Feed your family for less than 10 bucks’ guy; that’s me. But the funny thing is, it’s actually the proudest thing I’ve ever done.”Why? What’s in it for you, aside from the money?

“That ethical stuff around food is really important to me, and I like being in a position to be able to sort of fl y a fl ag and inform people and help them. I think at some point the money doesn’t matter. I can remember I worked for a guy who was extremely wealthy, and I was asking him about it, and he said, ‘At the end of the day it’s just another zero’.In a 2010 interview you talked about your efforts to eradicate hormones and growth promoters in beef sold in Coles. How did that go?

“Beef sales went up 12 per cent, which is very exciting. It cost them a lot of money to do it because the production is slower, so it takes longer for the farmers to grow their cows, so you have to pay more for it, presumably. But you can’t charge more for it because the customer won’t accept it, so the price stayed the same. When I sit back and think about all the different initiatives we’ve worked on, I’m f---ing proud of it.”

So is your work at Coles done?“No. The pork production in Australia is an absolute

disaster. Because the industry’s price-driven, they have sow-pen production of pork, which means that the sows are kept in a pen. It’s too small for them to turn around. They get extremely big, extremely fast. When I say to Coles we have to stop this, they say the industry’s going to go crazy, because if we go and tell the farmers it’s not just like they’ll say, ‘OK’. They have to knock their farms down and rebuild. Who’s going to pay for it? Then I have to convince Coles, well, you have to pay for it.”Did Coles know what it was getting into when it started working with you? How did you get along with its leadership?

“They had a really interesting CEO come in, Ian McLeod, who had very similar thoughts to me. He came from the UK, where the ethics of the food are actually more advanced and more humane than in Australia, believe it or not. As an Aussie, you’d like to think that we have this beautiful, organic, natural food manufacturing industry, but we don’t.”Your fi rst child, Hudson, was born on November 6, 2011, (a fellow Scorpio to Stone, who was born November 4, 1975). Do you want him to grow up an Aussie?

“Totally. There’s something primal in you that just naturally wants that. I remember when he was fi rst born, the fi rst time we travelled we had to get a passport for him. Of course, it was an American passport. That was something that didn’t sit well with me. I was like, if he’s going to have an American passport, we’ve got to get his Australian passport.”Do you want Hudson’s upbringing to be like yours?

“You always love the things that you had. I remember my school days in East Keilor and I think it’s a good, decent upbringing in Australia. And then you live in a big city like LA and you’re like, ‘God, where would we send him to school? What sort of kids would he be hanging out with?’”

Have you and Lindsay talked about the future; where you’re going to raise the kids?

“I’d like to be between the two countries for a while. I think you’ve got four or fi ve years until you’ve really got to decide where they go to school. Lindsay and I have both got a sense of adventure and spirit that’s like we don’t have to discuss it now. Let’s just leave it that we’ll be cool when we get to the point and have to discuss it. I think Lindsay loves Australia too. She loves coming back and spending time over there as well.”What have you learnt about success?

“Probably that you can brand yourself in any way; that there’s no one path to success. To use my industry as an example: if you’re healthy and this and that, then there’s all these things that are open to you, all these extensions that you can make of your brand.

“But if you like junk food and going though drive-ins, then there’s a guy here who’s got a show called Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives. He’s stuffi ng his mouth all the time. He’s the opposite of me in terms of what he stands for. But he does a great job, and more power to him. I think to be truly successful you have to live and breathe what it is you do. The only way you can do that is if it’s genuine. Then you have to put everything into it. Everything!

“If I’m honest about how much I work, I probably work 15 to 16 hours a day, still. I probably have, my entire life. It’s because I love it.” �

MOTORING

Self-driving cars are inevitable. Cars are already reverse-parking themselves and braking

automatically to avoid, or at least mitigate crashes. Next year Volvo will have vehicles capable of driving themselves in traffi c up to 31 km/h, and late this year Mercedes-Benz’s new S-class will steer itself, maintaining course in its lane at a safe distance from the car ahead, although it won’t operate unless a hand is on the steering wheel.

The Economist magazine recently took a stab at how things could look with self-

driving cars everywhere and there’s good and bad. Good: Your car will take you to work, drop you and then go home again, so scratch downtown parking stations. Bad: Rush hour will be twice as long.

Mind you, given that electronics can react in millionths of seconds, cars will be able to travel much closer together in fast-moving caravans, so the capacity of roads will be increased. Truck drivers and couriers will be out of a job and trucks won’t need rest breaks any more, so say goodbye to truck bays. Taxi drivers will also join the unemployment lines as people summon short-term hire cars with their smart phones. Or use their own cars and send them home again. Shopping centres may even offer customers free lifts in their self-driven mini buses.

Roads will need fewer signs, signals and guard rails so building them will be cheaper. And rural houses will become more desirable because people won’t

mind long commutes; they’ll be able to work (or play) on their computers while sitting comfortably in the rear seat.

Here’s something the car industry will appreciate; driving tests, if they exist at all, will become a great deal easier. The industry is concerned that growing numbers of young people prefer using their iPads on the train to driving, and anything that gets them interested in cars again is welcome.

Travelling salesmen will sleep in their motor homes as they roll from town to town, meaning lots of farmers’ daughters may remain single.

The vast bulk of car accidents are caused by human error, so expect accidents to fall dramatically. This will send insurance premiums plummeting (this is just theory, remember) and free up hospital beds.

But expect a rise in taxes to compensate the poor, struggling government. �
