Lunch at Eltham Hotel 09 - 04 – 2017
We left the Clyde Campbell car park at approx. 9-15AM and after leaving the C.B.D. we
headed out along the Gundurimba road. The back roads were in terrible condition due
to the recent major flood with pot holes and washed out sections. We passed through the
village of Wyrallah, on to Tregeagle and Rous road then turned onto the Bruxner
Highway. After passing through a series of roundabouts we travelled down a very steep
street to the University for Morning Tea.
The weather turned out to be warm and sunny. We remained at the university until 11-
15AM then headed off for the next venue for lunch. After leaving town we travelled
along the Woodlawn road and over the railway bridge and onto Numulgi village, though
Bexhill then onto to the Eltham road to the Eltham Hotel for lunch which we enjoyed
immensely.
The drive was very relaxing and well suited for the older vehicles and it will be great to
be able to say that we’ve been to Uni.’,even if it was only for morning tea.
The day was very enjoyable and a Big Thank You to our host Rod Johnston for an
excellent run to Eltham.

ANZAC DAY Seven cars lined up to take part in the procession in Alstonville on a beautiful Tuesday
morning. As usual, the streets were crowded with people applauding the war veterans in
our vehicles who could no longer do the distance marching, and all those who took part
including school children and members of the various organisations such as local bands,
Police and Fire Brigade.
The ceremony was also very enlightening to see the school children from the very young
to high school students taking part with readings they had put together. The 25th
April is
a day of remembrance and it’s great to see that the Anzac experience has not been
forgotten more than 100 years on.

What a Difference Century makes
The average expectancy for men was 47 years
The five causes of death were,
1 Pneumonia and influenza.
2Tuberculosis
3Diarrhea,
4Heartdisease.
There were only 8,000 cars and only 144 miles of paved roads.
The maximum speed limit was 10 miles per hour.
Only 14 % of homes had a bathtub.
Only 8% of the homes had a telephone.
Sugar cost 4 cents a pound.
Eggs were 14 cents a dozen.
Coffee was fifteen cents a pound.
Most women only washed their hair once a month, and used Borax or egg yolks
for shampoo.
There was no Mother’s Day or Father’s DAY,
Marijuana, Heroin and morphine were all available over the counter at the local
corner drug stores.
Back then pharmacists said, ‘Heroin clears the complexion, gives buoyancy to the
mind, regulates the stomach and bowels and is a fact a perfect guardian of health.
Crossword puzzles, canned beer and iced tea hadn’t been invented yet.
There were about 230 reported murders in the ENTIRE U.S.A.
Try to imagine what it may be like in another 100 years.
