It’s amazing how quickly and deeply a photo can move us. I was recently cleaning out a drawer and found a picture of one of my sons wearing a Timberwolves jersey from several years ago. Instantly, I experienced a powerful rush of emotions and memories from the past. I thought of how fast my sons have grown up, and I reminisced about them as young chil-dren. I showed the picture to Julie, and after we shared

some more memories together, the picture immediately found a place in our refrigerator collage. As I look at the picture I’m reminded how quickly we can forget things we’ve sworn we’d always remember. It is so easy to get into the frantic schedules and busyness of life, and then forget many of the mo-ments of life we’ve promised ourselves we’d never let go.

We hope this year’s magazine helps brings back many of the memories of this year’s conference, (or in case you weren’t able to attend, memories of con-ferences past). Maybe there was a time when you shared special moments with your family, or you heard God’s voice in a particularly powerful way, but over time the memory has started to fade. Perhaps you’ve forgotten about a time when you were going through a difficult time and God touched you through a speaker or musician. Hopefully, an article or picture will resonate with you and help you recall a similar experience in your own life.

It is an exciting time for Northern Pines. We are in the second year of a 2-year process to assess some possible innovations in scheduling, pricing, and programming, all aimed at trying to reach new young families who have never been to our conference before. From changes in scheduling (trying a 2- speaker format with extra elective sessions in week 1) to music and possible service projects, it is an exciting time for our ministry, and we hope you’ll continue to give feedback as to what you think of it. We also want to assure you that while we are test-piloting some new programming options, the essence of Northern Pines has not and will not change. We are commit-ted to the things that have made Northern Pines unique: clear, powerful, and accurate Bible teaching, meaningful worship, significant and lasting relation-ships, and a continuing focus on our Savior, Jesus Christ.

There is one more thing we wanted to let you know about. For those of you who were not able to attend this year, or if you wanted to share Northern Pines with a friend, you can now download all our speaker messages for free on the Northern Pines website. Just go to www.npines.org and click on the “About Us” link and go to the Press/Media section.

We hope you enjoy the magazine, and it either brings back many wonderful memories of past conferences, or it whets your appetite for a possible “Vacation with a Purpose” to create some new ones.

Have a great trip down Memory Lane!Dean and Julie

attend the evening teaching session and then hang out with friends—and, some-times, just with each other—until 11 each night! At no extra cost! (For parents, these simple statements are truly worthy of exclamation marks.)

That relaxation made our morning teach-ing and our afternoon family time so much more enjoyable. Several of my first-graders were the oldest children in their families. Their frazzled parents, toting babies and urging along pokey toddlers, kept thanking me for my teaching—and I was enjoying every minute of it. God also used these parents to adjust my perspec-tive. Life with four kids is always busy, but we are no longer in “those days,” and we filled our afternoons with swimming at the beach, hiking some of the trails or

“I love my CCA. I love my new friends. I love eating ice cream everyday, riding on the train (tram), playing at the beach, find-ing Mel the Monkey, seeing my teacher, playing at the park, and going to the candy shop. Can we go to camp now?” Rebekah, 6 years old

“Mommy, next year can we stay 8 days?” Megan, 5 years old

It sounded too good to be true. For two years Dean and Julie Jaderston had been telling us of the camp they directed. “It’s a fantastic family experience,” they told us. “Great spiritual teaching—for all ages.” We could believe those things, but their claim: “It really is a family vaca-tion—you’ll have time to relax”—no way. With a ten year old, six-year-old twins and a four year old, a “family vacation” generally means we’re more exhausted when it’s over than when it started. Whether it was possible or not seemed to be a moot point; we didn’t think we could afford it. Then Dean asked us if we would be willing to teach in the children’s program—reducing the cost—and we thought we might as well give it a try. After all, my husband and I like kids; we just needed some breaks from our own. If we could have a few good conversations without interruption, it would be worth it. It was more than worth it. Each evening, a CCA (child care assistant—i.e. angel from God) met us outside the cafeteria and took our kids away. We were able to

learning more about the history of the campground (hint: the Gospel train is fascinating).

And that last promise—about spiritual growth—was also true. My husband and I discussed each message, with friends and each other, and were challenged to grow individually and together. Our fifth-grader gained both head AND heart knowledge in Wilderness camp, and we credit quite a bit of the maturing we see in her this fall to lessons that began at Northern Pines. Even our twins still refer to stories they learned at camp (which is amazing, since I was their teacher) and sing the Scrip-ture songs (I finally have Philippians 4:8 memorized). All week we kept meeting “lifers,” people who had been coming to Northern Pines all their lives and who plan to keep com-ing. “We’ve grown as a family because of Northern Pines,” they told us. After only one year, we can see ourselves becoming lifers as well.

Brooke Boeken Northern Pines…BEST experience ever! As soon as you reach campus you see trees, hills, lake, ponds, hide outs, adventure, and smell the fresh air. The atmosphere is just like being in a huge bubble that shuts the crazy world out. Friends, leaders, games, outstanding food, gift shop, coffee shop, canoes, paddle boats, sand beach, and adventures

through the woods. You’re surrounded by so many people who openly love you, care about you, share feelings, show guidance, and lead you spiritually. You make true Christian friends that help you take closer steps in your walk with God. Our main focus for Senior High camp last year was to keep our eyes focused on God and take baby steps closer to him, to stay going forward don’t turn your back to him. Every minute of the day God is working in you whether you’re at camp, school, and home, anywhere. It isn’t hard to open up and express yourself to everyone, that has always been a struggle for me but at camp there’s nothing to worry about. An open heart can get you so much further and really help start a loving relationship with your small group. Just after the first day I met the girls in my small group, they meant every-thing to me. I will always love them and still stay in contact with them. I can’t wait to see them next year; I really wish summer would come quick because that means its camp time. Northern Pines really touches your heart and pulls you in. God’s love…..un-explainable!!

Senior High Counseling

As counselors at Northern Pines our passion is to build intentional, Christ-Centered, relationships with our students. I had the privilege this past summer to send off a group of students to college after being a counselor with them since they were in the 4th-6th grade program. Being a continual piece of their Northern Pines experience has allowed a stronger sense of community, accountability, trust and an overall enhanced ministry that lasts far beyond the week of camp.

From Counselor, Wendy Moore

“Senior High was a lot less me....a lot more GOD.” (Sarah W.)

“During camp at Northern Pines I met a lot of new people and grew in my faith with God as well.” (Kody E.)

“Northern Pines has been such a blessing in my life. It is an escape from reality that allows me to reflect on my life and make decisions to grow spiritually in my walk with Jesus. God works through the programs and staff members in incredible ways year after year. I couldn’t imagine a year without it!” (Mark N.)

“This last summer was amazing!! We were like a big family and got so close. ‘Our God’ by Chris Tom-lin is all I can say.” (Emily H.)

When we first went to NP in 1979 we were young parents of three boys. We received the joy of handing our sons over to fun, caring Christian teens called CCA’s.

Now 31 years later, we are grandparents and have had the privilege of bringing our special needs grandson to camp. Once again we have experienced the joy of handing over a child to a fun, caring Christian teen. God selected the perfect CCA for our grandson CJ. Her name was Liz Johnson. She made CJ feel valued and safe. He could hardly wait each night until it was 7 o’clock and Liz would arrive at our room. He still talks about her now several months later. When you bring a special needs child into a new situ-ation there is always some apprehension, but God orchestrated this experience in his own unique and wonderful way. We could enjoy the speakers knowing that our grandson was being well taken care of. We are so grateful for Liz and her loving care of CJ. Thank you Liz.

Liz’s NP family; Jim and Jan Taylor

What brought you to NP as a CCA?

My friend’s sister had gone to Northern Pines as a CCA and told my friend how much fun it was, so next summer I decided that I would check it out! I love to work with little kids and don’t have the money needed to attend a big camp, so CCAing at North-ern Pines was the perfect way to get the best of both worlds!

What was your first time asa CCA like?

My first year as a CCA was so much fun! I got really close to a lot of the other CCA’s and we had a great time in small groups as well as baby-sitting together. I re-ally bonded with my CCA family; they actually requested that I come back the next summer and CCA for them again. I have kept in contact with the family and we hope that we will be able to stay in contact and maybe get together some time outside of Northern Pines. I am grateful that I was matched up with such a great family! They cared about me personally and would ask me questions about my interests and life.

Q:

A:

What does a typical day as a CCA look like?

A typical day of a CCA consists of teaching a VBS type program and having a Bible-study type session in the morning, enjoy-ing a delicious lunch and having the time until dinner to enjoy the beautiful camp. Then in the evenings we offer baby-sitting to the families there so that the parents can go to their pro-grams. You get the chance to bond with your kids. They really look up to you and can’t wait for you to come each night.

What else do you do besides baby-sit?

Although some-times it sounds like you are con-stantly working while CCAing and don’t have time to enjoy your-selves, that is far from true! There is free time from lunch until din-ner where you can play Frisbee golf, volleyball, Nukem, go swim-ming, or take a NAP! There is also a time every morning where you get to debrief a bit and spend some time in the Word. There are also fun activities for the CCA’s in the evenings before beginning baby-sitting. The week ends with a talent show and late-night party that never disap-points!

How were you impacted by the counselors?

One thing I noticed right away my second year as a CCA was the direc-tors remembered who I was! They take personal interest in con-necting with the CCA’s and they are always there to talk and care for you. My small group leader always provides opportunities for really good con-versations. One week I got sick and one of the counselors was a nurse, so she gave me some suggestions on what I should be doing and she drove me into town one day and brought me to the doctor. She asked me how I was feeling and was genu-inely concerned about me.

Our CCA program is for boys and girls age 13 and older or entering 8th grade in the fall of 2011 through high school. Please email us at [email protected] if you are interested in being a CCA. Applications can be downloaded from the Northern Pines website.

The best thing about having a CCA...

“The joy on my daughter’s face when she would see her throughout the week. She still talks about her!”Heather Gordon

“A CCA allows both of us to attend the evening service throughout the week and even have a little grown-up time afterwards! All of the CCA’s were fabulous and loving & free.” Mark and Jill Schoolmeesters

What did God teach you as a CCA?

I got the oppor-tunity to CCA for a special needs kid and I have learned that I may have some skills in that area. I have decided to receive an em-phasis in special education added to my elemen-tary education major in college this year because of the experience I had at Northern Pines. CCAing is a great way to get the experi-ence of going to camp with your friends as well as being able to serve God doing something you love. This is defi-nitely a program that expresses the love of Christ to the people it serves!

This summer marked another wild and equally wonderful week in the Wilderness. Whether making candles, playing Promise Land, or feeling the burn with pinkie pushups, this year was filled with fun and excitement as we learned about the great exodus from Egypt. The Old Testa-ment came alive as we read about God’s de-mands and plagues on the Egyptian empire. We focused on Deuteronomy 6:4-5: “Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one! You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength.”

One of the best memories I have from the Wil-derness would have to be the Tim

Lemmen’s concert. On Thurs-day we walked over to

the youth area and had a concert with Tim Lemmens and

the kids were ec-static all night. After-

wards, we went back to the Wilderness, and one

of my boys asked to pray with me to accept Jesus.

Nothing will compare to the joy of leading that young

boy to Christ. That night alone is the one reason that I can’t wait for Northern Pines 2011.

-Amittai, Wilderness Cabin Leader

“Awesome! My counselor really helped me understand God more! This was the best week of my life! I really grew closer to God! My best friend became a Christian! The food is so awesome! I can’t wait to play “Raiders” at home with our friends. I learned so much about how faithful God was to the Israelites and how much He loved them! And I learned how much He loves me! Can we come for two weeks next year? Please…”

These were just a few of the thoughts our boys shared with as our family reunited with each other at the end of Northern Pines this sum-mer. Once again, we had all experienced an amazing, life-changing week! Once again, they had made new and reunited with old friends. They had been challenged to follow God more closely. They had been fed physically until their stomachs were full and spiritually until their hearts overflowed. They had worshipped, shared, played, prayed, laughed, listened, and learned! All year long, the lessons remain. They remember the stories they heard at Tabernacle time and the conversations their counselors had with them. They remember the times they sat quietly and thought about their relationship with the Lord. They remember… About this time each year, when the weather gets cooler, they begin remembering the warmth of the lake and the fun of their time in the Wilderness. The countdown starts…and before we know that memory is once again an amazing reality!

Youth Programs Open To Students Without Families at Camp!

Historically, Northern Pines had a very limited number of “unat-tached” youth that were able to attend due to space issues. This is no longer an issue. Both junior and senior high programs will have full use of Robbins Youth Lodge both weeks this summer. This means we can more than double our youth programs!

Families are encouraged to spread the word and invite friends, extended family and youth groups. Any junior or senior high student who brings an unattached friend(s) for the first time to Northern Pines will receive a free NP T-shirt in the mail.

The cost for a week-long youth Christian camp experience at North-ern Pines is very affordable. All students are able to apply for the $100 Green Lake scholarship.

Confessions of a Junior High Director

When I tell my friends that I’m going to camp they usually say, “you are such a big kid, Marly.” My friends don’t realize that I’m going to Northern Pines and I’ll be in my own program designed for my own spiritual growth: the Young Adult program. Let me just say that I LOVE THE YOUNG ADULT PROGRAM!

The Young Adult program allows me to be with fellow Christian young adults and allows me to see that I am not alone in the changes and challenges that are going on in my life, whether it be through stressful college life or just struggling with my faith each and every day.

During the short week we discuss how God should be number one in our lives through daily devotionals, prayers, and just pure love for our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. All the while we aren’t completely on a rigid schedule. We have planned activities, but some are not mandatory which makes me feel more like an adult. I know I’m not the only person in the group that appreciates this. I know after leaving the young adult program my faith is renewed and God will always be number one in my life. I’ve also made lifelong friends whom I love dearly.

Young Adult Program - Junior High

Northern Pines...growing up with my friend Matt, I had heard about the camp for years. I was always intrigued (who wouldn’t be, with the stories that Matt tells!) but could never work it out with my schedule. Finally, Dean called me into his office earlier this year and asked me to direct the second week of Junior High. My first thought: “How am I supposed to follow Austin Renfroe?” Nerves aside, I committed me and my wonderful wife Ashley’s services for the second week. Then, I signed on as a Junior High counselor for week one, with the idea in mind that I could beat the learning curve that comes with being in a new place and lead a successful week of camp. I believe that it is safe to say that I got a bit more than I bargained for! So then, here it is: Confessions of a First Time Northern Pine Attendee.

First confession: The camp is absolutely beautiful. I mean that in terms of the physical, to be sure (Green Lake is gorgeous) but also in terms of the people. I’ll admit it, Ashley and I were nervous, serving as leaders in a setting we had never even attended, but the conferees and other leadership staff were so gracious and helpful – blowing away our expectations.

Second confession: I love the family aspect! I have attended and served at many youth camps, and one of the reasons that Northern Pines is great is because the family is present, if not a youth’s specific immediate family, then at least the family as an institution – which provides an invaluable angle that many camps cannot claim.

Third confession: Northern Pines is the most fun you will ever have at a camp. You will be tired, unequivocally, (my tank was on empty by Thursday of week one!) but at least you will enjoy getting to that moment! In all seriousness the different traditions and activities – program specific and camp wide create a contagiously exciting and fun atmosphere.

Fourth (and final) confession: You will struggle to find a more Christ-centered, Biblically based camp than Northern Pines. The Cross is at the center (see: last year’s T-shirts) of Northern Pines, and this means that you can have full confidence in the speak-ers and the words that come out of their mouths. The camp is fun (see: above point) but it is also enriching, and in the end, I believe that Northern Pines can be summed up in the slogan: “A Vacation With a Purpose.” I know I’ll be back. Will you?

hoice!

In today’s economy, we know finances are a major issue for families, and especially for young families who are just starting out. We don’t want cost to be an insurmountable obstacle that would prevent a family from attending Northern Pines, and so our board has established a financial aid fund and provides scholar-ships and aid for many families each year. Typically, aid is given in the form of (but not limited to):

First-time and second-time family discounts•Hardship scholarships•Pastor and Para-church scholarships for licensed and ordained full-time Christian workers•Youth Scholarships•Extended Family Scholarships•

Each year we have numerous inquiries for financial aid, and all are handled confidentially. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you find your circumstances may keep you from attending this year, or you would like to come but are having a hard time making the finances work. We would like to see as many people as possible experience Northern Pines in 2011. Thanks to the generosity of our donors, we can help make Northern Pines a reality for many families, even those who might be experiencing some financial challenges. To inquire about financial aid, please email the Financial Aid Committee at [email protected] or call the office at (612) 861-5100 and leave a voice mail.

Last year was our second year at Northern Pines, and, as with our first visit, we found it fulfilling and enjoyable in every way. As an architect, it was an added benefit for me to be able to worship, study, and recreate in such a beautiful setting, popu-lated with so many impressive and delightful structures. During our first year I was fortunate to be treated to an in-depth tour of many of the Lawson-era buildings in detail. It quickly became apparent that many of these structures are suffering from progressive deterioration, due mostly to water infiltration as a result of broken roof tiles. Because some of these structures are not currently used by Green Lake Conference Center, they continue to further de-terioration. Since there are always numerous projects going on, sometimes these projects have a lower priority. The added financial stress of our current economic times, of course, only makes matters worse. Over time this damage, if left unchecked, will result in escalating costs for repair or restoration, and the possible loss of some of these architectural gems. Last summer, the Green Lake Conference Center, along with Northern Pines, embarked on a pilot Historic Building Stabilization Program. The goal of this program is to under-take strategic repairs using volunteer labor in an effort to stabilize or preserve these structures until long-term repairs or restoration can take place. The first work session is planned for Spring 2011, and will focus on re-mediating damage to the Boathouse roof tiles. Northern Pines is hoping to assist with volunteer help, and opportunities will exist for a wide range of skill levels, from experienced craftsman to helping hands and willing hearts. If you are interested in volunteering to be a part of this process, please contact me at [email protected].

NP Families The Opportunity to Serve

SERVING AT GREEN LAKE CAN CUT COSTS ON NP VACATION!

Green Lake Conference Center has numerous service opportunities throughout the year, including the weeks of Northern Pines. If you and your family or a group of families would like to serve either during the year or during camp please contact us. Just this past year groups have built bunk beds, created a fire pit and meeting circle for our Wilderness, and helped with stabilization program Bob mentions above. There are many options available, including doing service projects for part of the day and taking part in NP activities in the evening at a significantly reduced cost. Please email [email protected] if you are interested in exploring any of these options.

SERVING & GIVING OPPORTUNITIES

In order to keep registration costs as low as possible, Northern Pines is dependent on gifts from our confer-ees and alumni to cover the cost of staff and non-conference expenses. It is through the generosity of these donors we also fund both the financial assistance account which enables us to help families who cannot afford the full conference fee, special projects such as the refurnishing of the Blue Door Cabin for the Wilderness, and other needs of the ministry. Without faithful supporters, we would not be able to continue strengthening individuals and families through our conferenc-es. All gifts are tax-deductible and will be receipted promptly.

Many of us tend to think about giving only in the form of writing a check, which for some has become increasingly more difficult in this time of recession. In reality, cash gifts make up 80% of charitable contributions nation-wide, but only 7% of assets owned by individuals and families are in the form of cash. This means that many individu-als have untapped resources that could be made available to support the causes they are passionate about. Non-cash assets that could be utilized for this innovative way of assisting Northern Pines or other ministries while generating tax ben-efits for you, include: real estate, life insurance, appreciated securi-ties, vehicles, boats, time shares, jewelry, business interests, or gifting thru provisions in estate planning documents. We have access to re-sources that can provide profession-al guidance in helping you convert non-cash assets into tax deductible gifts to Northern Pines.

If you would like to talk to some-one about estate planning or other forms of giving please email [email protected] or call 612-861-5100. If you would like to make a donation to the ministry, please mail it to :

Northern Pines Becomes A Definite MUST On The Summer Calendar Of Our Family!

Jill & I both feel like Northern Pines is one of the Midwest’s best kept secrets, and believe it’s beginning to gain rapid momentum with young families. The family environment, the Biblical approach to a vacation, and not to mention the facilities at Green Lake Conference Center, all make for an incredibly memorable week amidst the swirling busyness of life.

One might wonder how a couple in their late twenties with a young child would be so adamant about packing what would seem to be a whole summer’s supply of diapers, toys and necessary child supplies and driving nearly 5 hours from their Minneapolis home with a crying baby to spend the week with the Northern Pines family.

Northern Pines was an annual family trip that extended all the way up through high school for me, but 2010 was the first year that I returned in almost a decade, bringing my wife and one year old son. We were antici-pating a fun week but felt a little bit tentative about how our little guy would do away from home, and how he would settle in.

This brings us to the best part about our NP experience: Child Care As-sistants (CCA’s). Every family with children is assigned a CCA to provide personal childcare based on each family’s specific needs while the par-ents enjoy the evening services & activities at no extra cost. Our CCA played and cared for our son, put him to bed, and waited with him until we returned each evening. Greyson absolutely adored his CCA! It was so reassuring as a parent to see him light up when his CCA walked through the door each night!

While our son was being loved and cared for, we enjoyed a wide variety of teaching. The family hour, in particular, was very practical and insightful for us as new, young parents beginning to raise a family of our own. It was an added bonus for us to make some amazing new friends and take a number of late night walks out by the lake, just the two of us! We can’t wait to come back next year! Northern Pines, after one summer for us as a family, has become a priority in our lives we hope will remain for many years to come.

Northern Pines . 14

Northern Pines for me began in 1984. I was two years old. My parents were looking for a Christian family vacation, and decided to give Northern Pines a try. So we packed up the car and headed for camp in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin.

Throughout the next 18 years our family made it a tradition of attending Northern Pines every summer. The last time I attended Northern Pines was in 2001 in the rolled of a 2nd grade teacher. Since then I have gotten married and had two children. However, I always longed to go back to Northern Pines and begin family traditions of my own.

In the Spring of 2010, Chad and I started discussing options for summer vacation. With two kids under the age of two, we needed a vacation! Although Chad had never been to Northern Pines, it was easy for him to see how much I loved this camp, how much it had influenced my life, and how badly I wanted to return. So, on August 1st we were on our way to Green Lake!

Even though I had attended Northern Pines my entire life I found myself nervous about returning as an adult, with kids of my own. However, once I walked into registration and saw all the familiar faces, though it had been years since I was last here, I felt right at home. Everyone was so welcoming, not only to me, but also to my husband, our 2-year-old daughter, Mackenzie, and six month old son, Parker. I truly felt God’s love in every person at Northern Pines. I could not have asked for better CCA’s, Children’s Teachers, Speakers, and Staff! To this day Mackenzie continues to call every baby-sitter Anna (our CCA for the week). There is no doubt in my mind God brought us back to Northern Pines.

As I think back to the week we spent at Northern Pines this summer, I can’t help but smile! I started attending Northern Pines when I was just two years old. The same age my daughter was for her first Northern Pines experience! Mackenzie and Parker had a great first time just like Nick and I did back in 1984. I can’t wait to see what God has in store for them at Northern Pines in the summers ahead. I was able to reconnect in a way that was familiar, yet new. It was such a joy to renew friendships with camp friends from years ago, who are now married with children of their own. It’s the cycle of life, or should I say Northern Pines! Lastly, as a family, we are starting our own tradition. I remember that excitement as a camper of jumping out of the car to see my friends each summer. Now I’m excited to jump out of the car as a mother and know my kids are loved, I get to spend quality time with my husband, my family is growing closer to God, and for one week I don’t have to cook! What better vacation could there be for a mom?

As they say, “all good things must come to an end.” So, as we were making our way back home to Michigan, my husband looked at me and said, “What week are we going next year?” As a mother, who wants nothing more than to see her house grow in the Lord, I was thrilled to see that Northern Pines had come to mean as much to Chad as it has to me. Thank you Lord for bringing me back to Northern Pines, allowing me to reconnect with old friends, and reminding me why this place is so special. 2010 was an amazing vacation for our family. We can’t wait to see everyone in 2011!

One final story from a 2010 first-time conferee...

“We felt the Lord leading us towards a family vacation this year. A lot of desire...not a lot of money. My best friend suggested taking our kids to a family camp someone in her Bible study sug-gested. It sounded like the perfect mix of Bible teaching and vacation for us, and a Christian camp experience for the kids. It sounded great and with help it was affordable. One problem - my 14-year-old son who I love could bring it to a crash and burn situation. I signed up and the praying began. I did not even tell the kids we were going until two days before we left. From the drive up to each day my son had a peace I have not seen maybe ever. He was asking to come back next year from the first day on. On Wednesday night after the concert he came bang-ing on my door. I was expecting the worst...but it was the best! He had accepted Christ into his heart and couldn’t wait to tell me!”
