a Brief History of the Chama River ValleyThe human history of the Chama River Valley is rich with tales of struggle, innovation and survival. Northern New Mexico and the Chama River Valley in particular have been called some of the richest regions for paleontology and archeology studies in the U. S. Ghost Ranch Education and Retreat Center near Abiquiu, NM is known worldwide among paleontologists as having one of the richest fossil quarries of the Triassic era, which began 220 million years ago.

Winter time!

Winter is a time of dreamlike beauty in the Rio Chama Valley. Days are sunny. Nights are clear and filled with a million stars. In the surrounding mountain passes, you’ll find a reliable base of snow perfect for cross country skiing, snowmobiling and snowshoeing. Equipment is available for rent locally at very reasonable prices. Groomed trails and marked tracks crisscross the accessible public lands. In colder years, visitors and residents alike enjoy fine ice fishing on Heron Lake.

Ride the train!

Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad in the Village of Chama. A precious historic artifact of the American West that time forgot. Built in 1880 with little changed since, this is the finest and most spectacular example of steam-era mountain railroading in North America. Indigenous peoples of the Southwest have inhabited the Chama River Valley for at least 1,000 years.

a Puye Cliff Dwellings, established near the end of the Anasazi period stand in silent testimony to the resilient, hard working character of the ancient ones.aPoshuouinge, Leaf Water and Tsama: Ancient Pueblos of the ancestral Tewa People remain relatively intact today.aOhkay Owingeh, Santa Clara and San Ildefonso Pueblos: Decendants of the Tewas practice rituals and ceremonies in their ancestral homes.aNomadic Capote band of the Ute Mountain tribe: Frequented the hunting grounds of the fertile upper Chama River Valley well into the mid -1800s. Many remnants of their encampments, including fields of pottery shards and spear and arrow points can be found throughout the Valley.aJicarilla Apache Nation: In 1887, by executive order of the U.S. government, a permanent reservation for the surviving Jicarilla Apaches was established just west of Chama in Dulce, NM, a considerable distance from their ancestral homelands.

a San Juan de los Caballeros founded by Don Juan de Onate in 1598 (9 years before the settlement of Jamestown, VA). The first European settlement in the West near the confluence of the Rio Chama and the Rio Grande near present day Espanola, NM.a Fort Lowell (near present day Tierra Amarilla), Union forces provided protection from raiding Utes as European settlers expanded their influence throughout the Valley.a Las Nutrias, La Puente, Los Brazos, Los Ojos, Plaza Blanca and Tierra Amarilla communities settled in the mid 1800s. Portions of some of the original houses are still places of residence, in a good state of preservation. Many of the houses are listed as “significant structures” on state and federal registers of historic and cultural places.a Village of Chama, was founded in February 1880 when the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad began construction of the San Juan extension, a rail route that went from Alamosa, CO to Silverton, CO by way of Cumbres Pass, Chama and Durango. Railroad service to Chama began in February, 1881 and facilities for servicing railroad equipment, a depot, warehouses and stockyards were set up along the route surveyed for the railroad. For many years Chama remained a rowdy and exciting place to be with plenty of saloons, gambling halls, moonshine stills, etc. making it a real American Boomtown. Outlaws, such as the Clay Allison gang, regularly held up the saloons and gambling halls and wreaked havoc on the railroad pay car for construction camps with large payrolls.

Recreation & things ‘to do’ around the Valley!Fishing: The Chama River Valley offers as much variety and quality angling opportunities as you’re likely to find anywhere in the Southwest. Resident species and hatchery plants vary from place to place, but include Brook Trout, Rainbows, Browns, Cutthroat, Lake Trout, Kokanee Salmon, Walleye, Perch, Smallmouth Bass, Bluegills and Catfish.

Rafting, Kayaking & Canoeing: Nearly 25 miles of the Chama River below El Vado Lake is designated a Wild and Scenic River and offers some of the finest whitewater rafting and advanced kayaking in the State of New Mexico. Class II to IV conditions will be encountered on a stretch of the Chama River. Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad in the Village of Chama. A precious historic artifact of the American West that time forgot.
