Northern Lighting was founded in 2005, and has since

established itself as a small dynamic Nordic company

specialising in the design and manufacture of lights.

We present designer lamps and lights for different

moods that are inspired by the unique Nordic nature,

our culture and society and the very special natural

light surrounding us.

Northern Lighting is a commercial hub for designers.

The people who make our lamps include both young

up-and-coming talents and recognised designers. Despite

their different levels of experience, our designers have one

thing in common: they are fiery souls who are fascinated

by the mood-creating possibilities of light.

Aerodrome (Design 2012)

Aerodrome is inspired by the aerodynamic design

of airplanes turbine engines as well as by the glorious

tradition of modern scandinavian design of the 60s in

particular by designers like Panton, saarinen and

Jacobsen. Aerodrome is a family of lamps designed

to adjust the mood of the room towards the smooth

coolness typical of first class airport lounges.

The table lamp demands to be placed within a clear

area. With its curved, sculptural profile Aerodrome

already “fills” the surrounding space while its profile

is visually rich enough to decorate that part of the

room and inspire a feeling of elegance. Also, when

light is turned on, the laser-cut profiles of the top

help projecting curved shapes of shadow and light on

architectural surfaces of the room. When light is off the

shape of the lamp is highlighted by the stark contrast

of colors and textures between the external surface

and the flower-like interior surface of the top.

The design of a lamp goes beyond the pure functionality

of illuminating while also trying to create an atmosphere

suitable for anyone in pursuit of the idea of “exclusive

lifestyle”.

Snakkes (Design 2010)

Snakkes is a wall-mounted LeD speaking board, created

to light up the wall and to write a text or comment on

with a wipeable marker pen. Do you need to remind

your roommate to pay the rent? Forgot to tell your dad

you borrowed his car? Do you want to tell your girlfriend

that you love her? are you tired of telling your boyfriend

to put the toilet seat down? are you fed up with small

yellow post-it notes that end up on the floor? Forget

sticky papers, save the planet, express your mood and

say it with light!

Snakkes” in norwegian means “talk to you later”. it

would be something you would say to someone when

parting from them or leaving a message. Say it with

light!

Unika (Design 2012)unika is a mouth blown series of small glass pendantlamps, originally designed for Restaurant grønbech and Churchill in Copenhagen. The simple base is madeof solid brass; a detail that gives the lamp a clean industrial look, and makes a sharp contrast to the fragilehandmade glass lamp shade. The shade comes in twosizes, height 135 mm and 200 mm, and hangs from a twisted black fabric wire.

varied thicknesses and imperfections in the glass add asubtle honesty to the object, as well as a distinct, warmshininess and glow to the lamp. Lit as well as unlit, thefixture adds elegance and lightness to any room. Theunika series is suited for both commercial and privateinterior spaces.

Plank (Design 2012)

Plank is a light fixture made out of pure, raw wood. Plank

stems from a reference to the used and abused delivery

pallet. Plentiful in function, this thin, long and simplistic

pendant, wall and floor lamp series serves well to add

directed or guided light to a defined space in a room.

it further works well in providing a defined light strip

down towards for example a table or a desk area. the

dimmable LeD light is placed in between the two main

wooden planks, adding a high tech value to the object

and ensuring sustainability and eco-friendliness in all

of its character.

Play with Plank; place them together on a wall in a

pattern, put a whole stack on the floor or fill the air with

numerous repetitions of these wooden objects! and if

you would like to add some colour to it – simply paint

the wood!

the lamp series is available with rough cut light coloured

poplar wood planks (type “populus adenopoda”) and

with a more brown surfaced kebony syP (southern

yellow pine) wood from the norwegian company kebony

as an alternative version. both wooden materials choices

have an unpolished expression with visible marks and

traces from the production processes.

Bake me a cake (Design 2013)

Bake me a cake is a charming and playful table lamp

made out of oak wood and smoked tinted glass. simply

lift up the glass to change the bulb. the lamp portrays a

dim light.

Bake me a cake will be manufactured by the inmates in

a norwegian prison close to Bergen, through a unique

collaboration between the designers, Kriminalomsorgen

region vest (the norwegian correctional services) and

northern Lighting. the goal is to create a high quality

design production inside norwegian prisons where we

challenge the inmates’ ways of thinking and acting.

the project name stems from the classic story about

“the cake with the file” from the cartoon world wherein

mum adds a file into the cake she bakes for her

imprisoned beloved son to help him escape. the project

aims to create meaningful activities for inmates, while

still remaining behind bars.

Bell (Design 2011)

Bell is a series of shiny porcelain pendant lights.

The pure beauty of archetype forms was the inspiration

for these creations by designer Mark Braun. To celebrate

porcelain as a substance and the possibilities of its shiny

glazed surfaces, the coloured surfaces of Bell lights are

on the outside, contrasting with the pure white

porcelain on the inside.

The light is available in a range of colours inspired

by scandinavian rocks and plants. Bell creates a warm

and comfortable atmosphere, and is perfect to use as a

pendant above table, bar or lounge areas. It also emits

a beautiful sound if knocked upon – but be careful…

you don’t want to break it.

Diva (Design 2009)

Diva is a set of wood laminated floor and pendant light

sculptures. By making a contemporary light object the two

young designers, Thomas and Peter, wanted to pay their

respect to the proud Norwegian heritage of wood lamination

craftsmanship, and at the same time challenge or reinvent

how this material can be used.

Diva’s strong yet soft and almost feminine character

emerged from experimenting with different curve codes,

from which two distinct sets of patterns occurred. The lamp’s

outer frame consists of a set of thirty two gently curving

walnut or oak laminated plywood slices set around two

wooden cylinders. The inner parts consist of a slim metal

stem supporting a solid mouth blown frosted glass globe.

The floor lamp’s outer frame can be turned in two directions,

creating two different sculptures.

Diva creates a warm yet dynamic atmosphere when it

is turned on, and when off it remains an essential and

uniquely aesthetic décor object in any room.

Moo (Design 2008)

Moo is a full scale wall–mounted Norwegian light

moose head. Moo may be used both for indoor and

outdoor decoration purposes. The figuratively shaped

lamp body is made of poly–resin material, which gives

a smooth and transparent flow of light. The bulbs placed

inside the horns add an extra element of soft, sparkling

and translucent light effect to the lamp.

The inspiration behind the Moo lamp was found in northern

Norway, in the breathtaking scenery of Hamarøy, where

both of the designers have summer houses. Here the

moose is frequently seen passing close to the houses

and even over the lawns. The designers hope Moo will

stand out as a post–modern kitsch trophy, making the

viewer smile happily as they recognize this “king of

the Norwegian forest”.

Illusion (Design 2010/2011)

Illusion combines the functional elements of light and

a table. It hovers above the ground, challenging our

perceptions of gravity and our idea of two common

pieces of furniture, offering the elements of surprise

and magic. Combined in one, the lamp and table

become the focal point of any space, whilst

providing a place for your cocktail or your keys.

the shiny white version of Illusion releases a strong

and clear light down from the shade element, while

the matt black version emits a more sparse and

diffused light.

Illusion was inspired by the wonders of the scandinavian

natural landscape. In particular Kjæragbolten, a large

rock hovering in the crevice of a mountain above

Lysefjorden in Rogaland, norway.

Dokka (Design 1954)

Dokka is a small pendant light with a clean profile. it

is a genuine piece of european post–war design history:

in 1954, this functional light icon was the first norwegian

lamp ever to be awarded the highly regarded Golden

medal at the milan triennale. the lamp, also known

as “pendel s/10053”, was produced and sold by the

norwegian electricity company sönnico (oslo) for many

years. Dokka became one of the best selling norwegian

pendant lamps ever produced, until the day sönnico closed

down its lighting production and sales of the lamp came

to an abrupt end. in 2007 northern lighting decided to

relaunch this design classic, taking care to preserve

the main shape and features that originally made

it such a well–loved light.

Big Mama (Design 2009)

Big Mama is a large floor lamp made out of paper and

wood ––basic and eco friendly Nordic materials–– that

are used for the shade and the body respectively.

Big Mama represents more t han simple illumination of

space. Big Mama does light up a room, but at the same

time it gives the space character and personality. its

shape tells us intuitively more about its function. simple,

direct… with its iconic and super classical shape, there

is no doubt this is a lamp. And yet at the same time the

strong, dominant and sculptural character of the object

resembles that of an item which does not need to possess

a mere function in order to justify its existence.

Big Mama lights up a space with a strong, clear, yet

warm and mood–creating light.

Norwegian Forest (Design 2007)

Norwegian Forest is a pendant and table lamp series

with shade elements made of natural birch or white ash

veneer, depicting a pine forest with animals. the lamp

draws on the classic scandinavian tradition of using thin,

translucent veneer strips. the intricate pattern is laser cut

by skilled craftsmen in sweden.

the shade is made from premier quality, double layered

Nordic birch veneer or ash veneer with a white, semi

transparent stain on the outside and white paper fleece

on the inside. the veneer is put through a flexing process

to become bendable and then coated with a clear solvent

free coating. the shade elements are hand sewn onto the

white steel frame using natural leather lace. when lit, the

blonde veneer offers a warm glow, filtering out light

between the carved treetops.

the Norwegian Forest lamp was first presented in 2007

through Cathrine Kullberg Design, and included in the

Northern lighting portfolio in 2013.

it should be noted that wood is prone to ‘tanning’ in

strong sunlight. it is therefore advised to rotate a lamp

exposed to direct sunlight, to acquire an even, all-round

tan.

Evergreen (Design 2010)

Evergreen is a collection of height adjustable pendant

lamps. In designing this new contemporary series, Vibeke

Skar and Jens Praet refer strongly to industrial evergreen

elements – creating a new light medium that emphasises

the golden age of global industrialisation and the beauty

of forgotten classic design icons.

Evergreen consists of a series of lamps of different sizes,

available in either black or white. The mouth blown glass

lampshades are sandblasted outside, and shiny inside,

creating a diffuse kind of transparency. The iconographic

hanging system consists of pulleys that are used to adjust

the height, and a wall fastener for the lamp and its cable.

The accessories are made of aluminium. Evergreen

creates a dynamic yet highly functional light experience,

featuring an iconic design that suits almost every

kind of space.

Bender (Design 2008)

Bender is a large floor decor lamp that also works well

as a reading lamp. the organic shape of the lamp starts

at the floor with the textile wire going from the wall

socket towards the lamp base. From there the base bends

and curves its way up from the floor, all the way up to

the lampshade. the oversized shade element gives the

lamp its recognizable personality and creates a large

and focused spotlight. Bender has a matt oil painting

that gives the aluminium and steel surfaces a warm

touch and sophisticated look. the lampshade is fully

adjustable in all directions, making it well suited for

a comfortable and illuminated reading experience.

Bender is inspired by the often overlooked, but

indispensable, workhorse of plumbing: the humble pipe.

Bender grew out of a desire to utilize one of the simplest

elements of production while still creating a lamp with

personality and humour.

Butterfly (Design 1964)

Butterfly is a small wall lamp designed in 1964 for

Høvik Lys and later produced by arnold vik, norway.

In 2008 northern Lighting decided to relaunch this

norwegian design treasure. Its uniquness lies in the

combination of simplicity of form and its well preserved

indirect method of exposing light, creating a bright and

yet warm atmosphere. It looks simple, but is elegant

and decorative as a single item, and is even more so

when several are combined in vertical or horizontal

groups.

the new heat treated copper versions all vary in surface

colour and materials structure, and oxidation and time

further changes their appearance, making them unique

individual objects.

Designer: Sven I. Dysthe

Sven Ivar Dysthe (born 1931) is often referred to by

scholars as the wonderboy of modern norwegian design.

He got his certificate of apprenticeship as cabinet maker

in 1950 and graduated in Industrial Design from the royal

College of art in London in 1953. Sven later opened

his own design practice in 1958 and had his career

breakthrough in the early 1960s. His works have won

a number of national and international prizes, including

the Laminette chair for møtemøbler a/S, which won the

golden medal at the Ljubljana triennale in 1964 and the

Japanese “g-mark” and norwegian Classic award for

Design excellence in 1994. Works of his are purchased

by institutions such as victoria and albert museum in

London, röhsska konstslöjdmuseum in gothenbourg,

the national museum in Stockholm, nordenfjelske

in trondheim and the national museum in oslo.

Sven Ivar Dysthe is first and foremost honoured for

his ability to find simple solutions to complex challenges

with decisive elegance; Butterfly is as an excellent

example of this.

Maze (Design 2006)

maze has geometry and symmetry in focus, with

overlapping plates in a labyrinthine pattern. The form

and elements of maze are created based on the majestic

mountains and the complex formations of stone we find

in norway’s great outdoors. The light finds its way out

at different layers and heights within the shade and

gives off a comfortable and even light in the room. In

order to complete the communication between form

and function, a soft, atmospheric light is projected

up to the ceiling.

Oslo Wood (Design 2006)

Oslo Wood is a studio lamp with a tripod base. the

shade includes a revolving shade piece, which gives

the possibility of exciting angles of light in the room.

the lamp gives an upward solid indirect lighting effect

as well as a warm and diffuse direct light via the shade.

Oslo Wood spreads light in the same way as seen in the

forests around Oslo. the beams of light become diffuse

upon passing through the shade, mimicking the contours

of city light illuminating the sky on a dark winter night,

filtered by the trees dominating the ground below. the

Oslo Wood lamp’s indirect upward lighting effect relates

to the somewhat stronger contours of light that reaches

above the treetops.

Seed (Design 2007)

Seed is a wall–mounted night lamp. Seed creates

a unique reading environment through its filtered light

source from a low watt energy saving LeD. The focused,

yet soft, beam emitted from the diodes makes it possible

to read in bed while your partner sleeps. The ‘revolving

arm of light’ can point in a variety of different directions

and can be easily fixed to the wall in any desired position.

The front –end light switch makes it easy to turn the light

on and off and, since the lamp does not emit heat.

Seed is safe to touch, even by children.

Seed is available with five different colours of fabric.

The package also includes patterns, tips and suggestions

on how to create your own personalised cover. The lamp

is inspired by a seed–– rising and growing into a plant.

Berg (Design 1967)

Through the lamp series Berg the designer Gerhard Berg

expresses nature’s richness of form and lack of regularity.

The Berg shade elements have a rectangular prism shape

and are comprised of acrylic pieces placed together in

complex, irregular patterns, rich in contrast and depth.

The acrylic elements are formed in different heights.

The shapes are fragmented through sandblasted and

transparent acrylic pieces.

The Berg was originally made in 1967 by Gerhard Berg

for his own lounge.

Scheisse (Design 2008)

scheisse is a large pendant lamp. The lamp pays its

respect to the traditional incandescent light bulb, which

with its warm light and good colour reflection, has given

light to our households for so many years. The classic

light bulb is one of man’s most important inventions.

Unfortunately this bulb is inefficient, which creates

challenges in our threatened environment. scheisse

is a blend of art and industrial design, an experiment

with light and shadow as well as positive and negative

shapes. scheisse creates a distinct shadow and sculpture

in its environment.

Wherever placed, scheisse will hopefully stand out as a

true icon for all light lovers.
