From the Principal Assembly Presentations
The whole school assembly on Tuesday provided an opportunity to celebrate the success of our students in recent competitions;
Max De Vries (Year 8) and Alexander Todd (Year 9) were both joint National Champions and Calum Kennedy (Year 7) was a joint State Champion in the Australian History Competition for 2018.
Alex Yuen, Joshua Hort, Ryan Lynch, Alexander Todd, Harry Ross and Daniel Duncan, were recognised for their achievement winning the MetroMinds STEAM Challenge.
Twelve Year 10 Manly Campus students attended the Youth Summit; Margaux Saita, Tom Irwin, Robin Evans, Fergus Clarkson, Jeremy Nicholson, Jarod Colyer, Aja Elshaikh, Conor Carroll, Chloe Martin, Bonnie Yang, Melanie Qin, Eliza Lee and Lauren Griffiths. This was an initiative of the Northern Beaches Council, involving 120 students from 11 local high schools.
Year 11 into 12 Interviews
This week Year 11 students have been reflecting on their progress and planning for Year 12 during their individual interviews. In discussions involving career options, university courses and ATAR goals, students have demonstrated a clear understanding of their strengths and areas of opportunity and identified helpful strategies to support them during the HSC year. It has been a pleasure to take part in some of these interviews and I thank Ms O’Sullivan, Ms Izossimova, Ms Brien and Ms Rixon for their involvement in this worthwhile event.

Year 12 Drama night
On Thursday evening I had the pleasure of watching the members of Year 12 Drama perform their HSC Performance Major Works for family and friends. There are two components of this major work: a Group Performance (GP) and an Individual Performance (IP). George, Ella, Zoe and Kena’s group performed Understudy Island – about a bunch of poor actors who are banished to ‘Understudy Island’ by the Gods of Theatre. Max, Natalie and Lauren performed Lights, Camera, Action! – about a group of film crew exposing the rotting heart of cinema. Kena’s comments sum up the feeling of the class: ‘I’m so proud to be a part of this class, and to be under the direction of the real Gods of Theatre Mrs Carolan and Ms Joyce, who have spent hour upon hour upon hour (upon hour) inflecting their expertise into everyone’s performances. Next Friday we are performing our GPs and IPs as the real deal, where HSC markers will come in and assess us. We have a bit more to do to polish each work to perfection, but I say bring it on!’ Best wishes to all students – your talent, hard work and dedication are to be commended.
Year 10 HSIE
This Thursday, Year 10 had their second semester HSIE excursions, with students either investigating the coastline from Narrabeen Lagoon to Collaroy beach or discovering more about the Vietnam War.
The Geography excursion incorporated a range of primary testing techniques that students will be utilising in their action research projects this term, providing a unique opportunity to discover more about water and land management on the Northern Beaches.
The History students remained at school and were involved in a range of activities throughout the day to give different perspectives on the Vietnam War and the impact it had on the individuals and nations involved. The culmination of the day was an invigorating performance by Brett Hunt, providing an entertaining and highly reflective account of the impact the war had on his family.
Science Techno
For the past 3 weeks, Year 8 students have been working on their Science Techno projects and these were displayed and judged last Monday. All students did a fantastic job in choosing incredibly diverse and interesting topics and producing amazing displays. They researched the science behind their item or process, the history of its development and the impact it has had on society.
Year 7, 10 and 11 students helped to judge these displays and spoke to the students who explained their topic. Science staff members also had some input into the judging effort.
Six groups will showcase their display at a college finals day on Friday 31 August. On this day, Year 8 finalists from Manly, Cromer, Mackellar Girls’ and Balgowlah Boys’ Campuses will set up their displays here at Manly and will be judged by guests from the college as well as invited community groups and universities.
The Manly Campus finalists, in no particular order, are:
• The Microscope - Lucas Harvey, David Tsai, Jack Mclean, Nick Weng, Kai Sayer
• Running Shoes - Bezi Saunders, Olivia Forman, Sophie Stephinson, Amy Milford, Abbey McAllan
• Television - Bryn Montgomery, Kiana He, Ashleigh Powe, Sarah Wongso, Amber McCulloch
• Bridges - Ken Lamb, Jerry Yan, Bennet Chan, Jay Lakhana, David Tulk
• Encryption - Daniel Martin, Harrison Hook, Thomas Freeman, Krystof Zajicek, James Choi
• Nuclear Power - Kai Turner, Nathan Spencer, Lewis Hutcheson
Year 9 Debating
Year 9 debaters are off to the Quarter Final of the NSW Premier’s Debating Challenge following their win this week in the Inter-Zone Final against Willoughby Girls High School. The team, comprising Nina Grozdanova, Eliza Lo Russo, India- sioux Fabig and Max Oldham (pictured below), argued persuasively that secondary school students should be streamed academically. The team will next debate either Pennant Hills High School or Carlingford High School.
NAPLAN School Readiness Test
The NAPLAN School Readiness Test (SRT) will take place next Wednesday morning for students in Year 7 and 9. The test allows schools to become familiar with new processes and to identify any technical or administrative issues that need to be resolved prior to moving to NAPLAN Online next year. Student results will not be recorded. The SRT consists of two components:
• An omnibus test comprising test items from the domains of reading, conventions of language and numeracy.
• A writing task.
Seating in the Quad
A huge thank you to Heather Sheldrick and the wonderful team of parents who are building the seating in the quadrangle.
If you are able to assist with the next stage of the work, please come along to school this Sunday 26 August to join us in finishing the garden bed/seat in the quadrangle. It will be enjoyable and
satisfying! Below pictured are 3 happy builders from last weekend.
Please contact Heather on 0414 818 380 or via email at [email protected] if you are able to come along on Sunday to help.
Alumni Achievements
During the week I had the joy of receiving an email from the parents of one of our past students, Alexandra Tweedie, who was a recipient of the Kim Berendes Scholarship for Social Justice. Since completing her HSC in 2012, she ‘graduated from her Arts/ Education course at Sydney University last year, and was awarded First class Honours and University Medal. She also received an exchange scholarship to Pennsylvania University to study English Literature for the first semester of 2017.’ They expressed their gratitude ‘for the excellent education and the encouragement from wonderful teachers Ali had received during her time at Manly Campus, and the Scholarship in particular, recognised her effort and propel her to further work in Social Justice.’
It was wonderful to hear that, during her university studies, Alexandra also ‘took part in numerous voluntary projects to assist disadvantaged high school students and other groups in making the most of their opportunities in Education. That was a great experience that she has brought to her current role as an English/ History Teacher at
Kogarah High.’ I wish Alexandra all the best for the future and congratulate her for choosing a career in public education.

From the Deputies We thought it was timely to talk about leadership. Not because of our current climate in Australian politics but this week has been a busy one for students standing for student leadership positions across the school with SRC elections taking place throughout the week.
When it comes to leadership, we can draw inspiration from many places — even from nature. What birds can teach us about leadership is well documented and we have chosen three to share with you in this newsletter.
Lesson 1: They are team players and encourage team work Birds have worked out that by working together as a team, they are more efficient. When they fly together, there is less air resistance, and this makes their journey quicker and easier. Similarly, good leaders understand and foster team work. They see the value in working together to get something done. They move forward on each other’s energy. If you surround yourself with excellent people you are far more likely to succeed as a leader than if you attempt to go it alone.
Lesson 2: Share the leadership While flying in V-shaped formation the lead bird eventually becomes tired and moves towards the back of the line. Another bird takes its place as it rests and recharges its batteries. Similarly, good
leaders understand that they are not the only leader. They recognise and value the varied strengths of their team members and hand the lead over to the strongest member in any given situation. They are not afraid to not have all of the answers, and they give credit to other team members. Share your leadership by empowering other team members to take responsibility at their levels.
Lesson 3: They are supportive and loyal The other thing that we found interesting is the fact that if a bird becomes injured or sick during flight, two other birds hang back with him until he is better. This shows support, a skill that good leaders also demonstrate. Good leaders support and even lift their people up when they are down.

NBSC Knockout Netball The college netball team played round 5 last Tuesday against Narrabeen HS. Unfortunately we had a narrow loss (36-38). Grace Underhill and Rhiannon Marshall-Witte (Year 12) were outstanding members of this team and are to be congratulated for their efforts for all of their contributions to this netball team over the past years.
Congratulations and thanks must also go to Megan Moshovelis (Year 11) for her fabulous and unbiased umpiring of this game.
Science Competition High Distinctions All students in Years 7-10 sat for the ICAS Science Competition. 204 students were awarded Credits (65-89th percentile), 154 Distinctions (90-98th percentile) and 19 High Distinctions (99th percentile).
Congratulations to the following students who gained High Distinctions:
Year 7: Max Hamilton, Daniel Lee, Samuel Stoddart, Thomas Thake
Year 8: Logan Campbell, Daniel Martin, Kerry Yang,
Year 9: Alexander Blackmore, Zahra Chew, William Murray, Max Oldham, Matthew Robinson, Alexander Todd, Alex Yuen
Year 10: Elliot Connor, Lauren Griffiths, Finn Harte, Jaden Lanceman, Isaac Ng
CSI Manly High Earlier this week, Year 9 attended a forensic science workshop led by Robert Gibbs, a retired crime scene investigator. The workshop involved the examination of a crime scene of a murder that had occurred in the Royal National Park in the 90s where students had to match pieces of evidence to distinguish between suspects.
Fingerprints, DNA profiles, car tyre impressions, bullet casing comparisons and blood splatter analysis were some of the many pieces of evidence available to Year 9 to process in the workshop. Once the evidence was analysed and processed, students could then make an evidence based judgement on which suspect was most likely to be the culprit of the crime.
After the workshop, students used the school laboratories to conduct investigations and experiments similar to what real crime scene forensic scientists would do. Paper chromatography is a method of separating out materials from a mixture. Ink is a mixture of several dyes and students used this method to identify suspects in a mock investigation. In addition to this, a 'urine' analysis was done by our students to detect the presence of various substances in prepared samples. Overall, the day was a great success and these CSI activities allowed our students to utilize a variety of science disciplines to help them in understanding the process of scientific enquiry and
develop their scientific knowledge.

Farmer Needs a Dress
Formals are especially significant in rural and remote areas. Let’s help to make these young Australians look and feel their best on this momentous occasion. Many will not attend their formals due to cost so with your help we can make this happen.
HOW TO HELP:1 Gather up a beautiful dress or suit (accessories welcome).2 Write a personal note of encouragement and support.3 Bring your dress or suit to the drop off location on the
nominated day before 10am - with a coat hanger.
Thank you for helping to lift up young Australians in this devastating time.
Any parent formal wear will be gratefully accepted as they need to feel special too.
