These Power Play Forecasts are the most unique in the country because they are based on Northcoast Sports’ Private Power Ratings. Our ratings are unlike any computer rating, as we take into account all of the following: Strength of Opponents Individual Units (Rushing Defense, Passing Offense, & Passing Defense, Garbage Yards, Weather, Injuries, Home Field Edge, and Successful Unbalanced Attacks). Here is how each is refl ected: Strength of Opponent: Our ratings do not just take the opposing team’s overall power rating into account. For example, in 1992, Washington’s defense vs the rush was rated at a “110” (From 1-100). They faced Colorado and allowed 183 yds rushing and dropped 12 spots in the national rushing defense ratings. However, Power Plays took into account the potent Buffalo run attack and had forecasted the Huskies yielding 225 yds. Due to the fact they did better than the forecast, Power Plays raised their rating to 112 even though they slipped in the national (straight yardage) rankings. Another example was Michigan vs Purdue in 1989. Michigan held Purdue to just 45 yards rushing and improved their ratings in rushing defense in the national sta-tistics. However, our ratings had them rated at a 102 and moved them down to 99, as they should have yielded just 32 yards to an impotent Purdue rush attack. Next time an announcer on TV tells you that a certain team is #3 in the country vs the run you better check Northcoast Sports’ Power Ratings and see how good a rush defense they really have! The top twenty ratings in Power Ratings for each offensive and defensive category will be listed in each week’s issue of Power Plays. Garbage yards: These are yards that a team gains or allows in the fi nal minutes of a game when it has been decided. For example, Team A is ahead 63-0 and allows 93 yards passing for a TD vs its fourth string defense. These yards are counted into national ratings, but not in Northcoast Sports’ Power Ratings! Weather: If a game is played in miserable weather conditions and is low scoring, the straight statistics credit the defense with outstanding performances. Our Power Ratings refl ect the conditions and do not give excess credit to the defenses. Injuries: When South Carolina played NC State in 1989, South Carolina QB Todd Ellis was injured on the third play of the game. His backup, who had seen very little action all year, was not prepared and hit on just 4 of 13 passes for 65 yards. The offensive coordinator did not risk any passes. In the national statistic’s NC State’s pass defense MOVED UP 14 NOTCHES. In Phil’s Power Ratings they stayed the same, as the low yardage WAS NOT refl ective of an outstanding performance by the defense. Home Field Edges: The weekly projection of yards and points is weighted with the home fi eld factored in. Successful Unbalanced Attacks: In 1989, Ohio St was held to 127 yards passing vs Northwestern. This dropped OSU in the national passing offense ratings & RAISED the Wildcats in the pass defense ratings. In our ratings the two units remained rated the same. Why? OSU rushed for 456 yards & DID NOT HAVE TO PASS & when they did they hit 9 of 11 passes, which is VERY effective. While Northwestern’s pass defense looked good in the national ratings, only Northcoast Sports’ Power Ratings refl ected the TRUTH! There you have it. More than just numbers, THESE RATINGS REFLECT the true strength of each unit and allow them to have the most accurate forecast of yards gained and points allowed in the country! No other rating system takes into account all the previous factors. Next time you hear that a team is rated third in the country in pass defense, just remember, yards are not everything and Northcoast Sports’ Power Plays will show you how strong the team really is.

NORTHCOAST SPORTS PLUS OR MINUS POWER RATINGS The Power Ratings listed below are not based on the Power Plays, they are based on last year’s fi nal computer power rating numbers with the pluses and minuses from the off season changes factored in. They are then adjusted during the course of the season based on the fi nal score of the games that are played on a weekly basis. The Power Ratings listed below can be used for you as a base power ratings to forecast up coming lines and strength of opponents, etc. Once again, they are not based on Power Plays and they differ from what we have shown in recent years, which has been our actual computer Power Ratings. These are Northcoast Sports Plus or Minus Power Ratings.

2007 TOUGHEST OPPONENT UNITS FACEDWHAT ARE THE TOUGHEST OPPONENT RANKINGS?

These rankings go far beyond the NCAA’s straight statistical ranking of each team. For example last year Bowling Green ranked #3 in the NCAA avg 40.8 ppg, but ranked #39 in our scoring off rankings. However they faced the #114th schedule of scoring defenses. As you can see, the NCAA’s statistical rankings can be misleading. In the upcoming weeks we’ll provide examples of this year’s statistical disparities. These are the current rankings for this year. Here are the teams that have taken on the toughest & easiest schedules.

THURSDAY, AUGUST 28th Yards Yards Turn Special Rushing Passing Points Overs TeamsUTEP 156 260 32 2.5 ✔BUFFALO 189 265 31 2.4 – This is an unusual trip to the Northeast for UTEP and they are getting 3 (dog is 12-2 ATS when the Miners travel). PP predicts the yards will be close with the Bulls having a slight edge (454-416). Buffalo is just 2-5-1 ATS in season openers.

1★ UTEP (+) 32 BUFFALO 31 Yards Yards Turn Special Rushing Passing Points Overs TeamsVANDERBILT 105 138 15 2.9 –MIAMI, OH 146 248 23 3.0 ✔ You don’t see this scenario very often with an SEC team travelling to MAC country and actually getting 3’ pts! Vandy has the youngest OL in the NCAA with 0 returning starts from LY and must face a veteran MU defense. PP calls for MU to win by 8 with a 394-243 yd edge and we agree!

4★ MIAMI OH 23 VANDERBILT 15 Yards Yards Turn Special Rushing Passing Points Overs TeamsNC STATE 138 155 15 3.2 –SOUTH CAROLINA 182 305 34 2.6 ✔ ✔ ✔ S Carolina’s defense went south LY after losing several starters to injury but TY they have starters back at every position on defense, PP predicts they will hold NC St to 293 yds. SC’s main question is new QB Beecher, but at least he makes his fi rst career start at home.

4★ SOUTH CAROLINA 34 NC STATE 15 Yards Yards Turn Special Rushing Passing Points Overs TeamsWAKE FOREST 174 190 31 2.2 ✔ ✔ ✔BAYLOR 61 260 16 4.2 – PP calls for WF to win by 15 but with just a 364-321 yd edge. The rule of thumb in WF games is to take the dog (43-23-3 ATS) and WF is favored by 12’ in this one. Both teams have had all of August to prepare for these 2 unique offenses which could eliminate some of the advantages that these teams usually have, and we can’t lay that many pts with WF.

NO PLAY: WAKE FOREST 31 BAYLOR 16 Yards Yards Turn Special Rushing Passing Points Overs TeamsOREGON ST 149 240 24 3.1 –STANFORD 141 210 22 3.1 – OSU is just 3-10 ATS in their fi rst road game but they have shut down the Cardinal rush attack allowing just 134 yds on 137 att (1.0 ypc!) the last 5 years. PP calls this close to the line showing OSU with a 2 pt win (line 3’), and we will pass.

NO PLAY: OREGON ST 24 STANFORD 22 Yards Yards Turn Special Rushing Passing Points Overs TeamsTROY 193 208 27 3.3 –MIDDLE TENNESSEE 138 198 21 2.3 ✔ ✔ Troy is 1-6 SU but 6-1 ATS in road openers, but usually face BCS teams in their openers. Two years ago Troy stole the Sun Belt Title from MT pulling out a come-from-behind win (trailed by 13 with 2 mins left), but LY Troy dominated with a 45-7 win. PP calls this right at the line showing Troy with a 6 pt win and a 401-336 yd edge.

NO PLAY: TROY 27 MIDDLE TENNESSEE 21

FRIDAY, AUGUST 29th Yards Yards Turn Special Rushing Passing Points Overs TeamsTEMPLE 133 228 24 2.3 ✔ ✔ ✔ARMY 113 133 16 3.2 – Temple hasn’t been an AF since 2002 and open as a 7 pt favorite at West Point. The Owls defi nitely have the talent edge with all 22 starters back and PP calls for an 8 pt win with a 361-246 yd edge.

NO PLAY: TEMPLE 24 ARMY 16 Yards Yards Turn Special Rushing Passing Points Overs TeamsSMU 101 335 33 2.8 ✔ ✔ ✔ ✔RICE 149 335 38 2.6 – SMU hasn’t won at Rice since 1986 (9 meetings) and the visitor is 2-9-1 ATS in this series. PP shows Rice with a 5 pt win, but the yardage forecast is close. Rice is a 3 pt favorite and we think this will be close to the line.

NO PLAY: RICE 38 SMU 33

SATURDAY, AUGUST 30th Yards Yards Turn Special Rushing Passing Points Overs TeamsUTAH 148 180 19 2.9 ✔ ✔ ✔MICHIGAN 177 150 18 3.4 – PP predicts that the Rodriguez era at Michigan will begin with an outright loss to a non-BCS school showing Utah with a 1 pt win and a 328-327 yd edge. Michigan will take awhile to adjust to their new offensive and defensive schemes and Utah is a veteran team capable of the upset.

4★ UTAH (+) 19 MICHIGAN 18 Yards Yards Turn Special Rushing Passing Points Overs TeamsSYRACUSE 96 240 23 2.4 ✔NORTHWESTERN 159 355 34 2.8 – Syracuse has lost their last 4 road openers by 30 ppg and travel to NW as 12 pt dogs. The PP pts forecast leans with SU showing NW with an 11 pt win, but the ydg forecast points towards NW (514-336 yd edge). NW HC Fitzgerald is 0-5 ATS as a HF making this a No Play.

NO PLAY: NORTHWESTERN 34 SYRACUSE 23

NOTE: Power Plays - PPWelcome to this week’s issue of Power Plays. The Power Plays Newsletter consists of forecasts that are made by a special Power Plays rating system. This is a system developed many years ago and we regard it very highly. In my final analysis of the plays the Power Plays forecast takes up anywhere from 25 to 30% of our total analysis. You will see in the Power Plays Newsletter in the write-ups that we agree with the majority of the Power Plays forecasts. However, there are times when we will disagree with the Power Plays forecast. We want to make it clear that this is the Power Plays Newsletter and these forecasts are based purely on the power ratings. You should never use just one method, system or angle to determine your handicapping. The times that we disagree with the Power Plays Newsletter we will clearly note it. If the Power Plays rating is strong enough to be a 4★ Play, yet we are on the other side of the game, we will clearly state that we like the other side of the game. With all that said here are this week’s Power Plays Selections.

Yards Yards Turn Special Rushing Passing Points Overs TeamsMEMPHIS 111 205 17 1.9 –MISSISSIPPI 214 255 33 2.9 ✔ The debut of new Rebel HC Nutt will be successful according to PP with a 16 pt win and a 469-316 yd edge. UM is an 8’ pt favorite in this regional rivalry (schools 85 miles apart) and should win by a larger margin than they have the last 3 yrs (3 ppg avg) despite the loss of sackmaster Hardy (foot surgery) as they are one of the NCAA’s most improved teams.

4★ MISSISSIPPI 33 MEMPHIS 17 Yards Yards Turn Special Rushing Passing Points Overs TeamsOHIO 40 185 17 2.9 ✔ ✔ ✔WYOMING 200 240 29 2.7 – WY is 13-1 SU in home openers with an avg win of 35-5 in that span and PP calls for a solid 12 pt win with a 440-225 yd edge. WY always starts the season strong under Glenn and Ohio may be looking ahead to their trip to the Horseshoe next week.

4★ WYOMING 29 OHIO 17 Yards Yards Turn Special Rushing Passing Points Overs TeamsAKRON 78 155 14 3.1 ✔WISCONSIN 307 270 42 2.6 – PP shows Wisky dominating Akron with a 577-233 yd edge in a 28 pt win. The line opened at 26’, but UW HC Bielema has been known to roll it up when the occasion arises.

1★ WISCONSIN 42 AKRON 14 Yards Yards Turn Special Rushing Passing Points Overs TeamsWESTERN MICHIGAN 103 255 22 2.6 ✔NEBRASKA 222 270 33 3.0 – NU is 4-0 SU all-time vs the MAC winning by 31 ppg, but LY was outplayed by Ball St at home in a 41-40 win. WM HC Cubit usually emphasizes these BCS non-conf gms nearly beating Florida St in ‘06 and pulling an upset of Iowa LY. PP calls for NU to win by 11 and the line opened at 14 and we like the Broncos.

4★ W MICHIGAN (+) 22 NEBRASKA 33 Yards Yards Turn Special Rushing Passing Points Overs TeamsWASHINGTON 165 140 19 2.9 –OREGON 275 245 37 2.5 ✔ ✔ Oregon has won 4 straight in this series by an avg of 23 ppg and PP calls for a 18 pt win by the Ducks with a 520-305 yd edge. The line opened at 14 and the Ducks are 12-3 as a HF.

4★ OREGON 37 WASHINGTON 19 Yards Yards Turn Special Rushing Passing Points Overs TeamsTULSA 243 298 40 2.1 –UAB 173 233 29 2.5 ✔ ✔ Tulsa was just 2-5 ATS on the road and 0-5 ATS as a DD favorite LY and PP shows the same pattern here. LY Tulsa outgained UAB 695-403 but only won by 8. PP shows TU with an 11 pt win and the line opened at 14’.

2★ UAB (+) 29 TULSA 40 Yards Yards Turn Special Rushing Passing Points Overs TeamsTCU 203 180 27 2.5 ✔ ✔NEW MEXICO 67 205 14 2.6 – TCU HC Patterson was the DC & safeties coach at NM in ‘96 & ‘97 and in his 3 MWC meet-ings vs his former school, TCU has dominated winning by an avg of 38-16. PP calls for a 13 pt win on the road (line 7), but we think it is tough to go against either school in this important MWC gm on opening weekend.

NO PLAY: TCU 27 NEW MEXICO 14 Yards Yards Turn Special Rushing Passing Points Overs TeamsMISSISSIPPI ST 148 198 25 2.7 –LOUISIANA TECH 133 173 15 3.3 ✔ LT gets a rare visit from an SEC school and PP predicts a 10 pt win by MSU (line 8’) but with only a 346-306 yd edge. We agree with the yardage forecast and think a fi red up LT team can keep it close.

NO PLAY: MISSISSIPPI ST 25 LOUISIANA TECH 15 Yards Yards Turn Special Rushing Passing Points Overs TeamsBOSTON COLLEGE 119 290 27 2.9 –KENT ST 121 220 18 3.0 ✔ ✔ ✔ This takes place in Cleveland Browns Stadium and PP calls it right around the line showing BC with a 9 pt win and a 409-341 yd edge. BC is on an 0-8 ATS run as a favorite away from home and have a new QB making his fi rst start on the road and an outright upset by Kent wouldn’t surprise us.

NO PLAY: BOSTON COLLEGE 27 KENT ST 18 Yards Yards Turn Special Rushing Passing Points Overs TeamsOKLAHOMA ST 209 240 32 2.5 ✔ ✔WASHINGTON ST 166 280 24 2.5 – This takes place in Seattle and WSU is 4-1 SU in Seattle but 0-2 ATS vs B12 tms there. PP says that OSU will win by 8 (line 6), but it won’t be easy.

NO PLAY: OKLAHOMA ST 32 WASHINGTON ST 24 Yards Yards Turn Special Rushing Passing Points Overs TeamsNORTHERN ILLINOIS 166 230 23 2.6 –MINNESOTA 179 270 28 2.8 ✔ ✔ Both teams had a rough time in ‘07 but come into ‘08 as 2 of the most improved teams in the country. PP calls for a 5 pt win by Minny with a 449-396 yd edge. UM opened as an 8’ pt favorite and we think this game is a toss-up and will take the points.

Yards Yards Turn Special Rushing Passing Points Overs TeamsBOWLING GREEN 70 218 19 3.0 –PITTSBURGH 226 243 34 2.7 ✔ This is a make-or-break year for Wannstedt at Pitt and PP calls for a strong start with a 15 pt win and a 469-288 yd edge. Pitt is 6-1 as a DD HF and 10-5 ATS in home openers, so this is worth a look.

1★ PITTSBURGH 34 BOWLING GREEN 19 Yards Yards Turn Special Rushing Passing Points Overs TeamsHAWAII -7 250 18 3.4 –FLORIDA 282 350 53 2.6 ✔ ✔ PP calls this one right at the number, showing UF winning by 35 with an incredible 632-243 yd edge. The line actually opened at 27 but quickly rose to 35 and with UF suffering a spate of preseason injuries, we will pass.

NO PLAY: FLORIDA 53 HAWAII 18 Yards Yards Turn Special Rushing Passing Points Overs TeamsEAST CAROLINA 102 205 19 2.3 –VIRGINIA TECH 158 250 32 2.7 ✔ ✔ ✔ This game takes place in Charlotte and we expect VT to have the crowd edge. PP leans with VT showing the Hokies with a 13 pt win (line 10), but it’s tough to go against a dangerous dog like EC (12-2 ATS as an AD with 6 outright upsets under Holtz!).

NO PLAY: VIRGINIA TECH 32 EAST CAROLINA 19 Yards Yards Turn Special Rushing Passing Points Overs TeamsILLINOIS 185 190 21 3.0 –MISSOURI 140 345 34 2.4 ✔ For the 2nd straight year these 2 open up in St Louis and LY MU won 40-34 (-4’). PP calls for MU to win by 13 (line 8’) with a substantial 485-375 yd edge. Since UI snatched up MU’s BCS bowl bid LY, MU will be well-motivated for a large win here.

4★ MISSOURI 34 ILLINOIS 21 Yards Yards Turn Special Rushing Passing Points Overs TeamsMICHIGAN ST 145 188 26 2.8 –CALIFORNIA 176 288 31 2.6 ✔ MSU has won 3 straight road openers all versus BCS teams including 2 upsets. Tedford is 6-0 SU in home openers winning by an avg of 46-15. PP calls this one right around the number showing Cal with a 5 pt win over MSU with a 464-333 yd edge.

NO PLAY: CALIFORNIA 31 MICHIGAN ST 26 Yards Yards Turn Special Rushing Passing Points Overs TeamsUSC 203 275 33 2.2 ✔ ✔ ✔VIRGINIA 102 165 14 3.4 – PP also calls this one right around the line showing USC with a 19 pt win over Virginia with a 478-267 yd edge. UVA is rebuilding both of their lines this year and stars like DE Long will be tough to replace. We pick up line value as power ratings on both teams are not as fully adjusted as they should be and we like USC.

NO PLAY: USC 33 VIRGINIA 14 Yards Yards Turn Special Rushing Passing Points Overs TeamsALABAMA 135 195 21 2.9 ✔CLEMSON 180 250 30 2.0 – This game takes place in the Georgia Dome so the crowd should be split. Clemson’s last game was played in this building (an OT Chick-fi l-A Bowl loss to Auburn) while Bama’s current players have never played here. PP calls for a 9 pt win by Clemson (line 5) and we agree.

4★ CLEMSON 30 ALABAMA 21 Yards Yards Turn Special Rushing Passing Points Overs TeamsIDAHO 141 170 21 3.5 –ARIZONA 179 365 46 2.2 – AZ is very poor as a HF at 3-17 ATS and PP calls for Idaho to keep it within the spread only losing by 25 (line 27). Idaho has covered their last 3 road openers by an avg of 19 ppg including LY’s 38-10 loss at USC (+47)!

2★ IDAHO (+) 21 ARIZONA 46 Yards Yards Turn Special Rushing Passing Points Overs TeamsUTAH ST 121 105 14 3.0 ✔ ✔UNLV 194 250 26 3.1 – PP calls this one right around the line showing UNLV with a 12 pt win and a 444-226 yd edge. USU has won their last 5 games in Vegas since ‘89 and have won 9 of their L/11. While PP has this as a No Play, an interesting opening week system applies to UNLV. The system says to play ON a favorite of 11-23’ pts that lost at least their last 4 games of the previous season straight up.

PP calls for a 31 pt win by Aub (line 26’), but we fear that Tuberville may be more conservative on offense vs this non-conference foe and open it up vs the SEC teams.

PP predicts Texas will win by 22 (line 23’) with a 547-328 yd edge. We think Schnellenberger and his team have more interested in this than Mack Brown and the Longhorns.

Though PP calls for a 34 pt win, the line has opened at 37' but we can't go against KU with the opportunity for a blowout vs a non-conf foe.

UL has won the last 2 in this series at home by an avg of 30 ppg. TY UK is rebuilding on offense with only 4 offensive starters back and going with untested QB Hartline. BOWL HANGOVERFor a team to get to a bowl game, they had to have been success-ful the previous year. Teams off a 14 pt loss did lose a bit of their swagger. Now going on the road in their opening game the next year or facing a superior foe, this team which lost confi dence, is perhaps unable to regain it in a much tougher situation. We have found that since 2000, teams that have lost by 14 points or more that are either an underdog or away from home are a poor 7-18 28% ATS. Therefore, Play AGAINST a team that lost by 14 points or more in a bowl game and opens up the following season away from home or as an underdog.
