Cherry pie hike in Butler CountyBy Kathleen Ganster

The Butler chapter of theNorth Country Trail, in part-nership with the Jennings En-vironmental Center and theNorth Country Brewery, willbe host to the Cherry Pie Hikein sessions at 9 and 11 a.m. and1 p.m. Saturday at JenningsNature Reserve Center, 2951Prospect Rd., Slippery Rock. The annual hike follows thesame path, under some of thesame conditions, as GeorgeWashingtons winter treknorth in 1753.

The hike traverses part ofthe North Country Trail, theold Venango Trail, thatyoung Washington and hisguide Christopher Gist trav-eled to deliver an ultimatumto the French, according toJohn Stehle, vice presidentof the Butler Chapter of theTrail. It was Frances refusalto leave the territory, as de-manded by the British gov-

ernor of Virginia, that ulti-mately led to the French andIndian War.

This is a great way tolearn the history of the areaand how the old VenangoTrail played an importantpart of that history, Mr. Ste-hle said.

The event is always heldthe Saturday after GeorgeWashingtons Feb. 22 birth-day, and celebrates Washing-tons penchant for honesty,as illustrated by the legend ofthe cherry tree he admitted tofelling, regardless of the con-sequences. The event startswith a presentation by RodGasch and two re-enactors,Dan Nehrer and Bob Shaner.Mr. Nehrer and Mr. Shanerare French and Indian Warhistorians and will bedressed in period costumes.Mr. Gasch is on the board ofthe Washington Trail 1753nonprofit and will talk aboutWashingtons mission.

People want to knowwhy Washington was travel-ing in such dire conditions which hikers will get tore-enact this weekend withthe weather predictions,Mr. Gasch said.

He was only 21, young andenthusiastic and wanted to cre-ate a name for himself, so hevolunteered for the mission,Mr. Gasch said. Visitors willlearn Washingtons trip wasrerouted several times and henarrowly escaped an assassi-nation attempt, according toMr. Gasch. Mr. Nehrer andMr. Shaner will discuss theFrench and Indian War, howthe frontiersmen lived and theimplements they used in dailylife.

Over 120 people usuallyattend, so this year, organiz-ers created three sessions sothat more could learn aboutthe history and the hike, Mr.Stehle said.

We used to be in the OldStone House which was justtoo crowded, so moving it tothe Jennings Nature Centergives us more room and wedont have to limit the numberof people who can attend, hesaid. The reserve center isabout three minutes awayfrom the Old Stone House

The three sessions start atthe reserve center, then themore adventurous can takeone of two hikes.

The shorter hike will beled by a ranger from Jen-nings on one of the trails atthe reserve and last about anhour. A two-hour trek willfollow the North Country

Trail and will be led by mem-bers of the Trail Associationand the Butler OutdoorClub.

All guests will be treatedto free coffee and cherry piein keeping with the GeorgeWashington theme. The pre-sentations and hikes werecreated to not only help edu-cate about Washington andhis contribution to the his-tory of Western Pennsylva-nia but also to help people toenjoy the outdoors, saidJoyce Appel, board memberfor both the association andOutdoors Club. Ms. Appel ishelping to organize theevent.

Our mission is to createawareness and education, but we want people outside, enjoying the trails. TheNorth Country Trail is awonderful resource and thisbuilds awareness about thetrail, she said. Ms. Appelsaid new guests come to theevent every year, making itworth the time and effort.

I love people and I loveseeing people learn and usethe outdoors. In this case, weintroduce some people to hik-ing and the trail, she said.

The event is free, but reg-istration is requested. Con-tacting Mr. Stehle at 724-256-0674 or email at [email protected] is requiredso that enough pie is avail-able for all guests. Informa-tion: 724-794-6011.

When I adoptedmy beagle,Roman, he was, especially for abeagle, incredi-

bly quiet.Beagles are famous for

barking, baying and howl-ing; its their job.

They were evidentlybred over the centuries forthe express purpose of ren-dering every nearby crea-ture simultaneously des-perate to flee and pro-foundly deaf.

But Roman didnt bark.He was sweet and quiet. Hewhimpered at other dogswhen he wanted to meetthem, and at his housemate,Milo the cat.

Milos answers were al-ways unprintable in a familynewspaper.

He really knows how tomake meow a four-letterword.

Then, suddenly, Romanfound his bark. He foundhis bay. And he found heneeds to share them withthe neighbors and me be-fore dawn every morningwhen someone slams adoor.

Dont get me wrong; Iagree that predawn door-slamming is deplorable be-havior.

Its just that withoutRomans sound cannon of abay, I might sleep throughit.

Instead, I am launchedlike a confused, bed-hairedmissile into the head-board, while Milo punc-tures some soft part of meas his powerful legs firehim straight up and awayfrom the dog like a pilotsejector seat.

This tends to make meangry. So I yell at Roman. Iyell at him to NO BARK.I yell BAD DOG. I yellmany other things that canbest be summed up withMEOW!

Roman continues to barkand growl at the door, or theceiling fan or a car with abad muffler somewhere onEast Ohio Street itsfrankly hard to tell. Hedoesnt seem to know or carethat Im mad.

But I may be wrongabout that. New researchshows that dogs can tell thedifference between a happyhuman face and an angryone.

Dogs have been hangingout with us for somethinglike 10,000 years, and our re-lationship with them isunique in many ways. While

the dog has picked up only asmattering of language(treat, food, park andcookie), it is the only otheranimal on Earth that attendsto human communicationby looking at the right eye.We do that with each other.Dogs also are more likely tounderstand what pointingmeans.

Other animals just thinkits rude.

Through a complicatedseries of training tasks andexperiments with 20 dogsand images of human faces, the researchers determinedthat the dogs differentiatebetween the face of a happyperson and the face of some-one whos just discoveredhes being charged for Show-time without ever having or-dered it.

This research was con-ducted in Vienna, at theMesserli Research Insti-tutes Clever Dog Lab, a realplace I wish I worked in.Wouldnt you want to workat the Clever Dog Lab?Doesnt it seem like a lot ofplaces youve worked inshould have been called theDull Human Lab or the Un-imaginative Biped Office?

Proving that dogs can reli-ably tell the difference be-tween happy and angry hu-man faces theyve neverseen before doesnt exactlyprove, of course, that theyunderstand what those fa-cial expressions mean. Butone of the researchers toldBBC News that the dogstrained to touch their nosesto a picture of an angry hu-man face and not to a happyone took three times as longto learn the task as dogstrained to touch a happyface.

It seems they dont like totouch an angry face, hesaid. & maybe they reallyunderstand an angry face tobe something they dontlike.

Maybe Roman knows hisbarking makes me angry, but its more important toscare off whoever is slam-ming doors.

Nobodys ever shown theslightest inclination to comeupstairs and attack us in oursleep, but maybe that justproves the barking is work-ing.

Still, I wish he would letme sleep in peace and skipthe earsplitting commotion.

I mean, MEOW.
