Introduction

The North Scarborough Group Ministry (NSGM) was formed in 2013 to build and sustain ministry

across a diverse group of 6 parishes, 8 churches, from St Luke’s, near the hospital in Scarborough,

to the small village of Ravenscar situated at the north of Scarborough Deanery.

In the period of discernment before the Group was formed it became clear that a Group Ministry

was essential to enable the on-going ministry and mission of the parishes. Today we also see it as a

creative partnership that supports leadership within the NSGM and helps sustain and grow

individual churches and enables us to flourish and develop in new ways of working together.

The Stipendiary Clergy Team consists of two Incumbents Revd Mike Leigh and Revd Lynn

Hellmuth, and a curate, as well as the House for Duty post being advertised. In addition, we are

blessed with a good team of 5 Readers with others in training and many other enthusiastic, willing

and active members of Laity involved in leading worship, work with children, pastoral care and so

on.

More about the Stipendiary Clergy Team

Mike Leigh is the Vicar of the parishes of Newby and Cloughton. He has been in post for 12 years, and since 2016 has also been Area Dean of Scarborough. Before Scarborough he served his curacy in North Hull and before ordination worked for Opera North in Leeds. He is married with two (nearly) grown up daughters and loves to sing, walk and ride his bike!

Lynn Hellmuth has been Vicar of the parishes of Hackness with

Harwood Dale, Ravenscar and Staintondale, Scalby, and

Scarborough, St Luke since February 2018. Prior to this posting, all

her ministry had been in the London area. Particular Ministry

interests include Celtic spirituality and encouraging effective

collaborative ministry. Before ordination she was a senior Home

Office civil servant. She is single and in her spare time enjoys

training and walking with her dogs, theatre, and work on her

family tree.

Shena Moray was ordained deacon in the summer 2018. Mike Leigh

is her training incumbent and her primary focus is the parishes of

St Mark’s and St Mary’s Cloughton though she does also minister

across the Group. Before ordination Shena for 12 years was a Church

Army Evangelist ministering in several churches in the Scarborough

Deanery.

The North Scarborough Group Ministry Steering Group

In addition to the 2 stipendiary clergy, each parish in the NSGM has a lay representative on the

Steering Group which meets monthly to discuss, discern and pray together about current issues

and the way forward as a Group. The Steering Group is chaired by a lay person, Ros Brewer who is

a longterm member of St Mark’s Newby and is also the Lay Dean of Scarborough Deanery, a

member of Archbishop’s Council and on General Synod.

As a Group we have enjoyed weekends at Scargill House; Away Days; Men’s Breakfast and Ladies

Breakfast; Alpha course; a monthly prayer meeting for Readers and Clergy; a Group-wide mission

initiative using the course “Leading your Church Into Growth”, Bible study groups.

Recent initiatives include regular NSGM services on the 5th Sundays, the development of Pastoral

Ministry across the Group and a Holy Week Labyrinth.

In recent months there has been a special emphasis on refreshing the vision of the Group, with

new initiatives in the pipeline, including a monthly Group evening service sharing different styles

of worship, to encourage a deeper sense of fellowship and mission focus.

Whoever is appointed to the House for Duty post will be a key member of the Steering Group,

attending the monthly meetings, and playing a full part in developing our vision, embodying and

communicating it in the parishes and translating it into action in and across the churches.

Ministry in the NSGM – what’s it like?

As the pages that follow suggest, there is infinite variety to be found in the NSGM. Life is never

boring - from ministry in areas of social housing and deprivation to very small isolated rural

communities, from congregations of 3 to 150 on an average Sunday, and from formal Eucharistic

services, to informal worship in Community Halls and the Rugby Club!

The Group naturally falls into the two “halves” consisting of the two parishes Mike is incumbent of

and the four Lynn is incumbent of (though the viability of one of these is under review). It is a

constant challenge to encourage and foster a genuine Group identity, but the Steering Group is

clear that achieving and deepening this is key to the longterm stability and flourishing of the

NSGM.

Bearing all this in mind, we would envisage the House for Duty Minister serving right across the

Group so it would suit someone who would enjoy and thrive on leading worship and meeting

people in many different contexts, who believes in and is enthusiastic about collaborative ministry

across parish boundaries and who would also welcome the opportunity to develop specific areas

of ministry they are passionate about.

We hope that our new House for Duty Priest will work across the Group and will bring an area of

ministry that they would like to focus on which will help the NSGM to flourish and we pray that

the person will come with ideas as to how we can work in evermore creative and effective ways.

Going forward we are exploring how as a Group we can make more of an impact in the local social

housing estates in our parishes.

Our experience of House for Duty ministry

Don Maciver was appointed to the Scarborough Group Ministry in October 2014 and retired in

December 2017.

Don says “As a House for Duty priest in the North Scarborough Group Ministry, I enjoyed the

freedom to minister without being the person bearing ultimate responsibility. I also enjoyed

working with the variety of congregations in the Group, all of whom are very welcoming.”

Page 6: North Scarborough Group Ministry Profile...North Scarborough Group Ministry Profile Our vision for the group is to serve the communities of North Scarborough by: Supporting and encouraging

We offered Don a choice in how he used his time and initially he decided to focus on pastoral

ministry, since that is where his heart is. He spent a lot of his time visiting, developing pastoral

groups and pastoral training for volunteers and it was and still is a very fruitful ministry that united

the Group in many ways. It also became clear soon after he arrived that he had a gift for teaching

and so, he also gave some of his time to focus on small group teaching and establishing the use of

the Alpha course within the group. We can see the fruits of Don’s ministry with us in so many ways

and it is wonderful to see how the House for Duty post can bring the opportunity to do things that

stipendiary clergy may not have the time to focus on.

Our House for Duty Associate Priest

Serving the North Scarborough Group Ministry

We are seeking to appoint a Clergy colleague to join our ministry group (2 days equivalent per week plus Sundays)

Our six varied parishes, covering the northern suburbs of Scarborough and nearby villages, are seeking a colleague to join us. We can offer a breadth of ministry including:

The opportunity to develop a specialised area of ministry

Leading worship, including occasional offices, across the North Scarborough Group.

Freedom from having responsibility for a specific parish or attending PCC meetings

Committed and collaborative lay and ordained colleagues

The North Scarborough Group Ministry is entering a new and exciting phase. As a key member you will have the opportunity to be part of developing the Group’s vision.

We offer a modern 4 bedroomed detached house in the village of Cloughton near Scarborough in return for Sunday duties and the equivalent of 2 days ministry.

As an Associate Priest you will not be tied to the responsibilities of a specific parish but will lead worship including occasional offices and engage in ministry across the six diverse parishes of North Scarborough Group.

A typical week therefore might include a wedding or a funeral at one church, leading Sunday morning worship at another and pastoral visiting or schools work in a third parish, alongside time to develop a particular area of ministry in line with the NSGM’s priorities. What we would not envisage is the chairing of a PCC, or any of the routine administrative duties linked with a particular parish or church.

The North Scarborough Group Ministry is entering a new and exciting phase. You will be a key member of the Steering Group, attending the monthly meetings, and playing a full part in developing our vision, embodying and communicating it in the parishes, and translating it into action in and across the churches.

St Mark’s, Newby

Who we are:

We are a lively and family orientated church with folk from all ages worshipping regularly. We are central Anglican in tradition and have a fairly relaxed feel to the services with a real sense of joy and community. The church is situated in a largely residential area and we have been active in our local community for over 80 years. We continue to serve the community through a thriving children’s programme of midweek activities and other community involvement. One feature of this is a close working relationship with the Methodist and Roman Catholic churches in serving the community of the Barrowcliff estate. Alongside the Vicar, there is an assistant curate, a part-time Family and Youth worker (both shared with St Mary’s Church), one retired clergy, one Reader and a Reader in training. Average attendance is 65 adults and 15 children on Sunday mornings We have around 10 baptisms, 4 weddings and 30 funerals a year.

OUR VISION

Guided by the light of Christ, St. Mark’s seeks to be a community of faith, rooted in prayer, grounded in love and led by the Holy Spirit. We do this by:

Growing in our knowledge of God’s Word and his ways

Encouraging and empowering all people, young and old, to know the love of God in their lives.

Working closely with other churches and community groups to serve local needs and build a stronger community.

We do all this in the name and strength of Jesus Christ This is just a flavour of who we are. For more information please visit our website: www.stmarksscarborough.org.uk

St Mary’s, Cloughton

We are a traditional village church with a welcoming heart situated in the village of Cloughton and

serving also the village of Burniston, both situated to the north of Scarborough on the road to

Whitby.

The church is Victorian and sits in a prominent position in the village. We are presently looking at

how we can be more community focussed and at ways in which the church building can be used

creatively through the week.

Our attendance is on average 35 adults and we have four or five families who join us for All Age

services. Alongside the Vicar, there is an assistant curate, a part-time Family and Youth worker

(both shared with St Mark’s Church), and a Reader.

This is just a flavour of who we are. For more information please visit our website: www.stmaryscloughton.churchsite.org.uk

St Luke, Scarborough Who are we: We are a small and mainly retired church family serving a parish of approximately 8,000 people with 49 on the Electoral Roll. Our worship could be described as ‘Standard Anglican’. Lay Communion Administrators assist with serving Communion. Once a month, prayers are led by a member of the congregation. Average attendance is 23. Occasional offices are rare. The building, originally built as the hospital church, was started in 1932, with additions in the 1950’s. There is no churchyard. Inside the church is large, airy and bright with a newly installed heating system, but in need of updating in other respects. At the back of the church refreshments are served after services for the congregation to enjoy and spend time together. The hall is rented out for events. Our Vision and challenges

St Hilda, Ravenscar and St John, Staintondale (Chapel of Ease) Who we are The parish comprises two scattered villages with a combined population of some 200 about 6 miles north of Scalby in the National Park. The church at Ravenscar is the parish church. Services are currently held monthly and congregations are often as low as 3 though more attend special occasions.
