Welcome to the North Santiam Canyon, home to the three R s: recreation, relaxation and resources.

If you are looking for recreation, this is the place. Choose your favorite from: kayaking, rafting, tubing, skiing, swimming, hiking and golf. Those in the mood for relaxation enjoy fishing and beautiful views. And for those looking for opportunity the area offers both business and natural resources.

Here in the North Santiam Canyon, water is the element that connects the communities of Mehama, Lyons, Mill City, Gates, Detroit and Idanha. The North Santiam River, its tributaries and Detroit Lake form the backdrop for daily life. A magnificent natural setting shapes both work and play in these wonderfully distinct communities.

Santiam, the 2011 Guide & Business Directory for the North Santiam Canyon, is your resource to business and recreation opportunities here in the canyon. Businesses listed in the directory play a vital role in the local economy, providing products, services and jobs. The organizations listed enrich the canyon’s civic and social life. This guide is produced by the North Santiam Chamber of Commerce.

Other rivers in the Willamette system may have more tourists and fanfare, but the North Santiam has the most fish. We think you’ll find the communities along the North Santiam also have the most promise!

A surprising number of new businesses are opening along the spread out, lightly populated and very scenic North Santiam Canyon.

“Things are really starting to stir in the canyon,” said Nicole Miller, executive director of North Santiam Chamber of Commerce. “In the last year, we’ve had a wave of small businesses open and community projects begin throughout our neighboring communities.”

Miller believes this is a direct result of GROW North Santiam, a program of the North Santiam Canyon Economic Development Corporation that appeared on the scene two years ago. GROW offers free, confidential business coaching to area entrepreneurs wanting to start, expand, sell or save a business.

Also contributing to a groundswell of new life among the communities that make up North Santiam Canyon is leadership training made possible by a grant from the Ford Family Foundation, equipping rural communities to work together to maximize their assets.

New businesses that have sprung up in the last year include The Lodge at Detroit Lake, built by Doug DeGeorge and Frank Guistiani.

“It is beautiful; a great addition to the town,” Miller said. “A new pizza place and a fishing-themed gift shop – The Fishing Hole – have also opened in Detroit.”

In the past year, Sugar & Spice Bakery has opened in Lyons, Ark Animal Care set up shop in Mill City, and The Canyon Weekly newspaper, based in Gates, fired up the presses.

Trexler Farm Café, opened 18 months ago on the site of the Old Mehama Fish Hatchery, is becoming a “hot spot” in the area and beyond.

“It’s becoming the destination for wine tastings, lunches and private parties,” Miller said.

Sharlene Trexler, who has sold Christmas trees for many years, has been pleased at the reception of her “quirky” new café. She, too, is noticing the economic vigor emerging throughout the region.

“We’re going in the right direction,” she said, rushing off to tend to her hungry customers.

Grants have not only enabled GROW to continue its effective work; they’ve also made possible improvements such as an attractive new entrance sign welcoming folks to Mill City and the digital reader board in front of Lyons City Hall.

In July, Gates held a groundbreaking ceremony at the site of its new fire hall,

fostered through grants and community based fundraising of more than $2 million.

In October, the Detroit Lake Recreation Area cut the ribbon on a wintertime boat ramp helped by multi-agency grants totaling nearly $1 million. The campground also opened a 33-site winter loop.

Two recently conceived festivals are gaining ground. CanyonArts Festival, started in April, is making significant improvements for this year. The Cascade Foothills Saturday Faire, a venue for crafts people, farmers and others to sell their wares monthly from July through October, is on the rise, too.

However, canyon businesses have been contributing to the area’s well-being for decades. Freres Lumber Company was the 2010 recipient of the Associated Oregon Industries Environmental Excellence Award.

The multi-generation company founded in 1922 has dedicated itself to reducing its environmental impact and in recent years installed a biomass plant that produces enough electricity for 7,000 homes and steam power for its own operations.

For more than 10 years, the North Santiam Canyon Chamber of Commerce and the Canyon Senior Center have joined forces to hold a Youth Benefit Tournament at Elkhorn Valley Golf Course, attracting players from all over Oregon and beyond. In December, Fawn Meadow Farm donated 400 trees to beautify Lyons.

“This chamber is on an upswing and there is a lot of energy being generated,” Miller said. “When I started here four years ago we had 20 members and four people on the board. We now have a full board of 12 and 140 members. We’ve got the right people; really engaged and committed to building a vital community.”

Help for the small business owner is often inaccessible and unaffordable, but thanks to a free, custom-tailored program, business-people in the North Santiam Canyon are able to avail themselves of the type of assistance typically offered to big corporations with big bucks.

GROW North Santiam was introduced just two years ago and has already made a profound impact for the better among the business community and, in turn, the region’s tourism and community life.

A program of the North Santiam Canyon Economic Development Corporation, GROW offers confidential business coaching for those wanting to open, expand, diversify, sell or save a business. The program relies on – and has – strong community support; with the exception of GROW Enterprise Facilitator Allison McKenzie, it is organized and operated entirely by volunteers.

In the last year McKenzie has met with 76 clients; 151 altogether since GROW’s inception in October 2008. Of these, about half are new businesses.

“Our secret weapon is our volunteer resource board that meets to brainstorm ideas and resources for clients,” said McKenzie. This year alone, volunteers have clocked an impressive 1,540 hours.

“Now that we have two years under our belt, we have concrete experience that shows the

economic development model we use is working – and working well,” she said. “Our clients are growing and even expanding in this economic environment – and doing it with a lot less stress.” In a time when so many are worrying about the future, McKenzie is observing the emergence of a “pocket of optimism” in the canyon.

At the core of its model is making sure that three key legs of a business are in place: marketing, finances and the product or service they are offering.

“I have never seen something have a more profound effect on a business than putting the elements of this process into action,” she said. “It’s a simple tool for diagnosing issues or problems in a business. Last month we helped someone avoid bankruptcy.”

Another key to success is being passionate about the venture.

“What I personally love about my job is that I get to hear every single idea under the sun – that and encourage people to embrace who they are and show them how to feed their passion in a very powerful way,” said McKenzie. “When people are doing what they love they tend to do it well – it’s the first thing they feel like doing when they get out of bed in the morning.”

McKenzie said the process honors the individuality of people while validating their ideas through private sessions held within a company; monthly “marketing pow wows” with other local entrepreneurs and the resources and ideas available to them through an extensive network of regional volunteers.

“Being an entrepreneur can be pretty lonely; our process is collaborative by nature so people aren’t working alone,” McKenzie said. “A wide range of volunteers, resources and business owners are coming together and the effect is obvious when you walk around town.”

“I think that GROW really honors the independent, can-do spirit of the people who live in the canyon and their individuality.”

Mehama, an unincorporated community north of the Santiam River, was named after Mehama Smith, the wife of James Smith, who laid out the town site in the 1870s. A decade later, two Irish brothers, James and Henry Lyons, named the community south of the river after themselves. The city of Lyons was incorporated in 1958.

The Lyons and Mehama communities are most easily found by exiting at the distinctive Gingerbread House restaurant along Highway 22. This classic landmark serves as a welcome to the region and the communities embrace the same fun, small-town style.

The area offers many outdoor entertainment opportunities, including wooded trails for walkers, joggers, bikers and hikers; natural wetlands; fishing and boating access to the North Santiam River; Freres City Park and John Neal Campground.

Services include restaurants, stores, service stations, beauty salons, churches, a gift shop, a golf course, a video store, the Mari-Linn School, Lyons City Hall, Lyons Post Office, two fire departments and a public library.

In 1886 four entrepreneurs from Stayton gave Mill City its name when they purchased land next to a falls on the North Santiam River. The men had machinery hauled up on wagons from Stayton and constructed a mill. A small community formed around the mill in the following years and Mill City’s first post office was established in 1888. The city was incorporated in 1947.

Today Mill City is the largest community in the North Santiam Canyon. Recreational opportuni-ties include three parks that offer playgrounds, boating, fishing, water activities and picnicking.

The city has a fire hall, a city hall, stores, restaurants, a post office, a pharmacy, a museum, a senior center, a library, a video store, a visitors’ center and retail stores.

GatesGates was founded as a settlement for miners and loggers who lived in the area during the winter months. A post office was established in February 1882.

Ten years later W.R. Robertson, then postmaster, moved the post office across the river to a place called Gatesville. The name of the post office was changed to Gates, which became the name of the city when it was incorporated in 1950.

Gates is a peaceful little town located three miles east of Mill City along the North Santiam River. Several small pristine creeks and tributaries run through or near Gates, including Rock Creek, Little Rock Creek and Mad Creek.

Business and government entities in Gates include an elementary school, three churches, a motel, a fire department, a post office, stores, restaurants and the Gates City Park.

Detroit was founded during the construction of the Oregon Pacific Railroad. The name was selected because of the large population of people from Detroit, Michigan, who had settled in the region in the 1870s. A post office was established in 1891, and Detroit began to prosper as a center for the logging industry in the 1920s. The city of Detroit was incorpo-rated in 1952, the same year that it was relocated to higher ground due to the construction of the Detroit Dam.

The completion of the dam, and the filling of the lake it created, transformed the city from a logging community into one of the most popular tourist attractions in Oregon. Detroit today offers an appealing balance of small-town friendliness and recreational excitement. The lake is a popular location for boating, fishing, swimming, sailing and other water sports. Aside from water activities there are opportunities for camping, picnicking, biking, hiking, hunting, and backpacking. In the winter, Detroit offers access to sledding and skiing.

Detroit features motels, bed and breakfasts, rental cabins, campground facilities, RV parks, and retreat and conference facilities. Restaurants, grocery stores and marinas offer their services and goods as well. The city hosts events held throughout the year, including the July “Fireworks over the Lake” celebration.

Idanha’s original name was Muskrat Camp. It later adopted the name Idanha, a name that was inspired by the Natural Mineral Water Company in Soda Springs, Idaho. The company bottled water called “Idan-Ha.” The Oregon Pacific Railroad system was completed along the North Santiam River up to Idanha in 1889 but construction didn’t continue eastward because of a lack of funding. The post office was established in 1895 and the city was incorporated in 1950.

Idanha is the smallest town in the North Santiam Canyon and the highest settlement along the North Santiam River. Located in the shadow of Mt. Jefferson three miles east of Detroit, Idanha has a store, café, post office, library, a city park, and a wood products manufacturer. It is located about halfway between Salem and Sisters.

The Breitenbush Hot Springs, about 10 miles northeast of Detroit, were used by Native Americans for healing and ritual purification. President Theodore Roosevelt granted the land that includes the springs in a homestead patent in 1904. Merle Bruckman purchased the land in 1927 and converted it into a health spa, which he operated for more than 20 years. Alex Beamer bought the then-dilapidated facilities in 1977 and converted the area into the modern Breitenbush Hot Springs Resort & Conference Center.

In addition to its renowned hot springs, the center offers healing arts and massage, daily well-being programs, performances, hiking trails, and workshops. Breitenbush hosts more than 150 events each year. Visit www.breitenbush.com or call 503-854-3320 for information.

Willamette national Forest The Detroit Ranger District of the Willamette National Forest administers the National Forest lands surrounding Detroit, Idanha and Breitenbush. National Forest lands are managed under multiple-use principles to provide a variety of recreational, commercial, aesthetic and resource benefits for the public.

A wide variety of recreational opportunities are available in the District. These include developed campgrounds, dispersed campsites, picnic areas, wilderness areas, scenic by-ways, an extensive trail system, and winter sports trails and shelters. Personal use permits for forest products such as firewood, plants, slate rock and mushrooms along with maps, books, brochures and forest information are available at the District office.

santiam state ForestSantiam State Forest, located about 30 miles east of Salem, includes over 47,000 acres of forest lands ranging in elevation from 1,000 to 5,000 feet. The forest is managed by the North Cascade District, which is headquartered one mile east of Mehama on North Fork Road. The Forest spans parts of Clackamas, Marion and Linn counties.

Recreational opportunities include developed campgrounds, swimming, hiking, and equestrian trails. Upper and Lower Butte Creek Falls and Shellburg Falls are popular destina-tions for hikers and sight-seers. In 2008, the Crooked Finger Riders Association partnered with the Oregon Department of Forestry to develop a staging area and six miles of trail for ATVs and dirt bikes near Scotts Mills, about an hour north of Lyons.

santiam horse CampThe Santiam Horse Camp and day-use area lies at the starting point for a system of trails for horses, bicyclists, and hikers in the Santiam State Forest. The area features room for trailer parking with corrals and stock water for horses, and offers trail users miles of diverse forest with clear streams and unique geological formations. The camp, located about two miles south of Gates, is open May through October. For more information contact the Santiam State Forest, 503-859-2151.

hikingTwo trail systems offer visitors to Detroit Lake options in addition to fun on the water.

The trailhead for Tumble Ridge Trail #3380, a moderate uphill 5.3 mile hike, is located near Tumble Creek on the northwest shore of the lake. Trail #3381 to Dome Rock and #3379 to Tumble Lake, where campsites, huckleberries and Tumble Falls await explorers, branch off from #3380 after about four miles. Parking at Mongold Day Use Area is by fee or forest pass.

On the southeast bank, trail #3449 to Stahlman Point offers a moderate to difficult 2.5 mile hike from 1,700 to 3,000 feet. Osprey and their nests may be sighted along the trail, which ends at a former lookout site. The trailhead is 3.5 miles up Blowout Road.

The North Santiam Canyon is home to some of the best water recreation in Oregon, with the North Santiam River and Detroit Lake offering opportunities for kayaking, boating, fishing, and swimming.

Detroit Lake is a multi-purpose water project, created by the Army Corps of Engineers upon completion of the 463-foot Detroit Dam in 1953. Powered by two generator units, the dam provides flood control, irrigation, power generation, and a recreational lake. Detroit Lake is nine miles long, holds 455,100 acre-feet of water and has 33 miles of shoreline. The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife stocks the waters annually with 125,000 rainbow trout along with fingerling rainbow trout, kokanee and Chinook salmon. There are also brown bullhead, largemouth bass and pumpkinseed in the reservoir.

The main game of the North Santiam River, Steelhead and Chinook Salmon, make their way to the area in May and remain until August. Substantial runs of these fish continue to be abundant in the North Santiam below Detroit. The downstream point of the fish runs is located at Packsaddle Park about 60 miles upstream from the Willamette.

The North Santiam is a popular spot for kayaking and float trips, with access to the river provided at many of the communities and at parks from Lyons and Mehama to Big Cliff Dam.

Our History

Glaciers formed what today is known as the North Santiam Canyon, carving out the area from Lyons-Mehama to Gates, as well as the hollow where Detroit Lake now exists. The canyon served for centuries as a highway for Native Americans, especially the Santiam band of the Kalapooya, Klamath, and Warm Springs tribes. In the late 1870s, white settlers arrived from the Willamette Valley. Between 1888 and 1890, the Oregon Pacific Railroad entered the North Santiam Canyon and encouraged the growth of small towns along its path. Originally designed to be a transcontinental railroad before succumbing to financial difficulties, the railroad became a means for the transportation of huge quantities of logs from Idanha to Corvallis, feeding the Willamette Valley’s timber industry.

The canyon’s economy was dependent on logging, farming, lumber mills, and mining for most of the late 1800s and early 1900s. The Hammond Lumber Company’s mill, established in what would become Mill City, was one of the largest Douglas-fir mills on the West Coast.

To get an up-close encounter with local history and wilderness, visit Jawbone Flats. The old mining camp’s historic 1920s buildings remain, giving visitors a sense of the life of the old west in the Oregon Cascades. Jawbone Flats is owned and operated by the Opal Creek Ancient Forest Center. Call 503-892-2782 for information.

The best way to learn about the area’s rich and interesting history is by visiting the Canyon Life Museum. The exhibits vividly demonstrate the development of the canyon, including the

fascinating life of early settlers. Read the diary of the young wife of a logger and examine the grainy sepia photographs of miners. You can also study the 3-dimensional topographic map of the canyon. The museum is located at 143 Wall St., Mill City in the 1927 Southern Pacific railroad depot. Those interested in visiting are encouraged to call 503-897-2816 for information. The museum is open Friday-Saturday 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. May through September, or by appointment.
