WORLD LITERATURE DISCUSSIONS: Moderated by Professor Bill Schiavo The Citadel, by A.J. CroninThursday, May 10 at 2:00 PMThis National Book Award winning novel, published in 1937, was groundbreaking in its treatment of the contentious theme of medical ethics. The author, who wrote it as “an attack against the medical profession,” drew on his experiences of practicing medicine in the coal mining regions of South Wales, where he had researched the correlation between coal dust inhalation and lung disease. The Duel, by Anton ChekhovThursday, June 7 at 2:00 PMSet in a seaside town, Chekhov’s novella is morality tale that pits a scientist, a government worker, his mistress, a deacon, and a physician against one another in a verbal battle of wits and ethics that explodes in a violent contest. Written in 1891, it was considered at the time to represent a “modern approach” to human behavior.

American Pastoral, by Philip RothThursday, May 17 at 7:30 PMA 1998 Pulitzer Prize winner, Roth’s novel delves into the life of Seymour, a successful businessman and former star athlete, whose conventional upper middle class life is ruined by the domestic, social, and political turmoil of the 1960s, which he describes as the “Indigenous American Beserk.”

How the Garcia Girls Lost Their Accents, by Julia AlvarezThursday, June 21 at 7:30 PMThis coming of age novel is told in reverse chronological order, and spans thirty years in the lives of the four Garcia sisters who had enjoyed a sheltered and luxurious childhood in the Dominican Republic until their father got into trouble with the secret police. The ensuing flight of the family to New York City sends the sisters into social and cultural turmoil while they struggle to adjust to their new lives.
