This week Aberdeenshire Council’s Buchan Area Committee endorsed a Policy & Resources Committee decision of April 2014 to establish a Multi Use Games Area (MUGA) at Dales Park. Most of the over £200,000 funding for the badly need facility will be coming from planning gain which is the amount of money the Council receives from the building of each new house and other developments, the balance will come from the Council’s Capital Budget. Peterhead Councillor Alan S. Buchan said, as Peterhead is in desperate need of such facilities it is most welcome. For years many clubs have found the grass pitches waterlogged from October to May, this facility should greatly assist these clubs during the winter months. However, Peterhead is the largest town in Aberdeenshire which has witnessed thousands of houses constructed and thousands more planned. It is time to ensure that the planning gain from Peterhead is spent in Peterhead as there has been a massive lack of investment in everything from schools to sports facilities in the town.

Third year students from Scotland’s Rural College have found summer placements in the College’s SAC Consulting Division incredibly helpful to both their studies and their future career prospects. In return the consultants they have been working with have found their young colleagues to be a great help. Craig MacKenzie (21), Rebecca Small (24) and Joseph Williams (20), all studying for agricul-ture degrees, were the lucky three awarded ten week placements with SAC Consulting after an application and interview process. The aim of the placement is to help students develop their skills and improve their CV. They are paid internships, fully funded by the College’s Trust fund. The students also receive a £1,000 bursary to help with their final year’s study at the end of the placement. Rebecca and Craig, who study at SRUC Aberdeen, didn’t go too far afield; Craig was hosted by SAC Consulting’s Inverness Office, while Rebecca has been working at Thainstone. Joseph, who studies in Ayr, also stuck close to home, at the Ayr office, however he has worked with consultants in Stranraer, Stirling and Lanark. While working as trainee agricultural consultants has involved some time behind a desk, the students have also been out visiting farms to help advise clients on a range of issues including CAP reform, crop disease, wood-lands, nitrate vulnerable zones and nutrient management. They have carried out soil, silage and water sampling and have been involved in whole farm reviews and account analyses. Rebecca, originally from Dunoon, had no previous experience in farming before starting her degree at SRUC. She said: “My degree programme has given me a really strong background knowledge of agriculture and particularly all the legislation such as nitrate vulnerable zones, and CAP reform, which is such an important part of the job as a consultant.” For Craig, who grew up on a farm near Beauly, the placement really helped him expand his knowledge of CAP reform, as well as introduc-ing him to a more unfamiliar area; forestry. His strong grounding in crops, thanks to his studies at SRUC, was also hugely helpful. He says: “I spent quite a lot of time crop walk-

ing with my colleagues and thanks to my studies this was an area I felt quite confident in before I started. However, the placement helped me improve my skills. Getting out and seeing the diseases on the plants themselves is very different to learning about them in lectures.” The placements can result in long term employment with SAC Consulting. Last year’s placement student, June Thomson, who worked at the Thainstone office, is now a full-time agricultural consultant with the Turriff office. Joseph, who is from Tiree originally, also hopes the experience may help him find a permanent job in the sector one day. He says: “If I got the opportunity I’d be very happy to be a consultant, I’ve really enjoyed it. But first I need to complete my fourth year at SRUC!” For Andrew Leggate, Assistant Regional Manager at SAC Consulting, who mentored Joseph, taking on students not only gives the business the chance to assess possible consultants of the future, the students are a great help to the team in the here and now. They don’t hold you back in the slightest, in fact they are a great help. They pick up new skills, get to see what our job is about, and gain a good understanding of how rural businesses operate and how we can help them. I’m a real enthusiast about the scheme.”

Worried about exam results? Speak to ChildLine Scotland

As young people across Scotland have now received their exam

results and may be thinking about what comes next, ChildLine is

reaching out to young people, urging them to speak to someone

if they’re feeling anxious or worried.

Young people in Scotland will be amongst the millions of under

18s who received their exam results last week, many of whom

will feel under significant pressure to achieve good grades. In

2012/13, ChildLine bases in Scotland carried out 5,150* coun-

selling sessions with young people who mentioned school and

education problems, a 20 per cent increase from 2011/12.

Susan Dobson, ChildLine Services Manager for the charity’s

Glasgow base, said: "Getting exam results can be a very stress-

ful and anxious time for young people. We hear from lots of

young people each year who are anxious, worried or panicking

about receiving their grades. We want to let them know that they

are not alone and that ChildLine is here to listen to them.”

To help children and young people cope with their exam results and combat anxiety, ChildLine is offering the following advice for

young people to overcome worries about results and help them if they have any concerns.

The Scottish SPCA is appealing to kind hearted people in Aberdeenshire to help raise funds for abused, abandoned and

injured animals by volunteering. Scotland's animal welfare charity is urging locals to get involved this Scottish Animal

Week, which runs from 1-7 September, by shaking a collection tin in their area.

Graeme Innes, manager of the charity's Aberdeenshire Animal Rescue and Rehoming Centre in Drumoak said, "Last

year our centre cared for almost 1,000 animals and 2014 is proving to be even more challenging."As an animal welfare

charity, we receive no government or lottery funding and rely on the generosity of the public to continue our vital work.

"During Scottish Animal Week we have opportunities to fundraise throughout Aberdeenshire and we'd be very grateful

if locals can get behind our appeal and help. "Door-to-door fundraising can be carried out between Monday and Friday,

while people can hold street collections on the Saturday. Even if someone can only spare an hour or two, their time and

efforts would be hugely appreciated. It's something we always say because it's true, every pound and penny raised really

does make a difference and gives animals in desperate need of our help a second chance in life."

First of all, try not to panic. Even if you haven’t got the

results you needed or expected, you still have lots of op-

tions. You can get help with any decisions you have to

make. You could apply for a different course or qualifica-

tion, resit your exams or look at new career ideas.

If you didn’t get the grades you had hoped for try to re-

member that what you are dealing with is a temporary

setback to your plans. It might not seem like it at the moment

but you can get through this.

It might be hard telling your parents about exam results you are

disappointed with, but talking to them can really help. Hopeful-

ly they will try to support you and help you make the decisions

you need to. However, it can take a while for parents to come

to terms with disappointing results because it feels as if it is

something that’s happened to them as well as you.

It can help to remember this, but don’t be put off having a

conversation about what’s happened because you think your

mum or dad will be angry or upset.

Try to have the conversation so they know what you are

dealing with. However that conversation goes, remember you

can talk to ChildLine 0800 11 11 about any worry you have

about exams or your future.

The ChildLine website has a special ‘Exam results’ section for

children and young people to visit plus information

and support to help young people if they didn’t get the results

they had hoped for. As well as calling ChildLine’s free

confidential helpline on 0800 11 11 or visiting

www.childline.org.uk, young people can also send emails to

trained counsellors or receive support online via one-to-one

chat.

As students have now received their A Level and GCSE results, NAPIT Training are urging young people to train to become installers in the construction services industry. The industry is looking to fill 182,000 jobs in the next five years to aid recovery [1] and, according to the latest Construction Trade Survey from the Construction Products Association (CPA) [2], activity within the sector has continued to grow despite various challenges. This has led to increasing demand for installers who are already busy during the financial recovery. Ian Halton, NAPIT’s Training and Business Relationship Director, said: “The construction industry desperately needs an influx of skilled installers to meet increasing demand and apprenticeships are a great way to achieve this. We feel that now is a great time for interested young people to look to enter various trades within the construction industry and gain the appropriate skills to do so.” NAPIT launched the Apprentice/Work Experience Scheme (AWES) this summer to offer students the opportunity to work with, and learn from, members of a Government-approved Competent Person Scheme. NAPIT is keen for future installers to learn from professionals who uphold the same high standards it has promoted for more than twen-ty years. Working alongside NAPIT installers will highlight the im-portance of competency in the in-dustry. The benefits of apprenticeships to businesses are plentiful, with 96 per cent of employers who take on an apprentice reporting positive steps for their company . Whilst shaping the future of the industry; employers profit from a cost-effective, motivated addition to their workforce who is keen to listen and learn. At the end of the apprentice-ship the business will have a poten-tial long-term employee who has been trained by its workers, and thus is familiar with their company pro-cesses and ethos.
