The Swords Garda Station was one of three majorprojects that have been undertaken by the SwordsTidy Towns group this year. The other two projectsinclude the revamp of the Holy Well on Well road, which is ongoing, and the Poly Tunnelproject in conjunction withYouthreach in Swords. “We hope tohave both of these projectscompleted by the end of the year,”said Tidy Towns Chairperson, KenDuffy. “None of this would have beenpossible without our hardworkingvolunteers who give up their sparetime every week,” he continued. “Weare lucky to have a professionalpainter, Alain Gelpe, and a profes-sional artist, Matt Cullen on our team.Alain painted the lamp posts and thebench, while Matt took the batteredand rusted Garda crest away for refur-bishment and brought it back as goodas new.”“We would like to thank CommunityGarda, Tom Murphy for all the meet-ings and phone calls he made on our

behalf so that we could move the project forward,”Duffy said. “The project could not have come tofruition without the Swords business community,”he added. “It is through their generous donations

that we were able to purchase everything requiredto finish off the work. A big thank you must go to theCounty Council who will provide funding for theproject through an activities funding grant. Thanksalso to the Community Department and Pat Lane forseeing the social benefit of this project andsupporting it,” he said.Superintendent Ronan Galligan was delighted withthe work undertaken by Swords Tidy Towns group, when he told the County Leader: “The work donehere at Swords Garda Station is absolutely fantastic, with hanging baskets and beautiful plants. Anumber of volunteers, both young andold, including some young people withwhom we have engaged in the past andwould have been at risk, carried out thiswork. They came in and helped with thisproject and it is a wonderful communityeffort. Swords itself has terrific potentialto look this good. Sixth class pupils at SwordsEducate Together NationalSchool planted trees last

week, to represent the seedsof Mindfulness that they haveplanted in themselves. Theentire school body practisedMindfulness skills in theschool in the past year. During

this time, the children learnedto meditate to achieve a senseof calm for themselves and to

improve focus and concentra-tion in the classroom and athome. Principal, Karl Breenhas overseen this holisticapproach to education. “Weare trying to promote positive

mental health and we try tostart at the root, rather thantrying to sort out a muchlarger problem later on,” hesaid. The tree planting eventinvolved pupils, with theirmentor, Anne Margaretsinging songs and recitingverses in a very touching and

meaningful way. TheM i n d f u l n e s sprogramme hasbrought children fromdifferent culturestogether and bondedthem as a class. They learned specificMindfulness skills tohelp manage thoughtsand emotions, whilstletting go of fears, anxiety and worrying. The hope is that theywill bring these invalu-able life skills withthem to secondaryschool in Septemberand beyond. With so

much pressure on students toperform, it is vital that theseskills are used to help over-come anxiety and depression, alas all too prevalent inschools today.

EU Must SolveMigrant IssueMore migrants andrefugees wererescued in theMediterranean lastweek. Heads ofGovernment came toan agreement onresett lement ofmigrants, of whichJuncker declaredhimself sat isf ied,al though the dealwas not perfect. TheEU’s cont inuedreluctance to take

bold and decis ivedecisions to addressthis problem, whichtranscends decades,is surly just not goodenough. Last week saw theport of Calais closedby striking workerswith resulting chaos.Migrants took theiropportunity to steal ar ide on t rucksheading through the

Channel tunnel. Themigrants, once onFrench soil, head forthe port . Concernsare regular lye x p r e s s e dthat ISISmay usemigrantsas am e t h o dto placingt e r r o r i s tagents ands u i c i d ebombers deepwithin Europe. Thesuggest ion is thatthey may unleash aday of mayhem as af i rst str ike, beforeextending their

general crusade intoTurkey. Such anattack, i t issuggested, would actas a warning to the

EU, not to makeany move of

support infavour oft h e i rn e i g h -bour.

As the EUsummit was

in progress,we learnt of three

major terror istattacks acrossFrance, Kuwait andTunisia with loss ofl i fe and the awak-ening of fear particu-

larly in those commu-nit ies direct lyaffected. Later, President Tusk, speaking for the EUCounci l , said thatNato’s SecretaryGeneral had attendedthe Summit todiscuss the newthreats facing Europeat a t ime of hybr idwarfare, g lobalterrorism and cyber-attacks. He went onto say that Europeansmust invest in theirown defence to dealwith a dramaticallychanged secur i tyenvironment. To doso, the Counci l

decided to helpstrengthen Europe’sdefence industryincluding researchand technology. The EU must step upand present a real-ist ic opt ion toaddress the migrantsalready in Europe. Then they mustcontrol and stop thecause of the flow ofnew migrants. To failto do so will create aclimate where war isinevitable. It is timefor Europe to asserti tself on the worldstage and provide courageousleadership.

O’Brien CondemnsSnub Of MS DrugThe Government’s ongoing refusal to make a life-changing drug available to people with MultipleSclerosis is forcing MS sufferers out of work, accordingto local Fianna Fáil Senator, Darragh O’Brien.Senator O’Brien told the Seanad that the Minister forHealth has spent the past 18 monthsignoring pleas from MS sufferersthemselves, who say their standardof living is dramatically reduced, because they do not have access tothe miracle drug Fampyra.“Fampyra is proven to work foraround a third of MS sufferers. Thismeans that the lives of around 3,000people with Multiple Sclerosis in Ireland could bedramatically improved if they had access to it,” theSenator explained. “I have raised this issue repeatedlywith Minister Varadkar and his predecessor sinceFebruary 2014 and yet no attempt whatsoever has beenmade by the Minister or the HSE to make the life-changing drug available. “Fampyra is a mobility drug. Ithelps people with later stage MS to walk and retaincontrol over their bodies, thereby allowing them to stayin work and live independently. The drug is currentlynot available under the drug payment scheme, puttingit out of the reach of thousands of MS sufferers inIreland. As a result, many are confined to a wheelchairand have been forced to give up work,” he continued. “It defies logic that the Government sees no reason to

pursue this issue. It is a fact that many people withMultiple Sclerosis in Ireland will be in a position to stayin work and live independently with the help ofFampyra. Without Fampyra, they are being forced ontosocial welfare. Quite simply the State cannot afford notto act.” “I intend to raise this every single week in the Seanad until the Health Minister finally wakes up and makes Fampyra available in Ireland,” O’Brien concluded.

There are 28 membersat present and theyshare their skills and

knowledge, learn newskills and take owner-ship of projects theyhave undertaken. The group meets everyMonday and

Wednesday between10am and 4pm and oneof the men, Ray saidthe group was gratefulto the Riasc Centre and

to the County Councilfor helping them tooperate. “With the helpof the county council,we were able to getspace from the Riasc

Centre, who have beenvery generous to us, aswell as the Council, who helped us to buyour equipment,” hesaid. The group, for themoment are limited toworking on wood-working projects, butthey hope to expand

into more diverseprojects as times goesby. Already there havebeen a number of smalldonations of equip-ment like saws, jigsaws

and bits and pieces, which are greatlyappreciated. The hopeis to eventually get alarger premises wherethe group can diver-sify their skill sets. The principle of themens’ sheds move-ment is that the menthemselves decide onthe direction theirparticular shed oper-ates. The ethos of themens’ sheds is that itis a not-for-profitorganisation. It shouldbe operated like abusiness, withoutbeing a business. It’sall about makingsomething creative.”At present we arelearning new skillsand are confined tomaking things likewindow boxes andbird boxes, which donot require much skill. However, as weprogress, we intend tocreate morespecialised items likejewellery boxes andcigar boxes, which aremore refined andrequire more skill tomake,” said Ray.
