Pupils from Holy Family SNS, River Valley put on the musical, 'Annie Meets Oliver' at the school last week. Pictured at the dress rehearsal last Friday are orphan boys, Ben Richardson, Daniel Guerrini, Sean Downey and Cian Nolan The thorny issue of a fit-for-purpose transport system for Swords and the Airport, seems to be further away than ever, with the announcement that any project will take up to 10 years to deliver. This is an option that is truly not acceptable to citizens of the North County, and Swords in particular, who have listened to broken promise, after broken promise by successive governments for far too long. This comes with the news that Transport Minister, Paschal Donohoe (FG) said, “There is a valuation process underway, in relation to a number of transport options for Swords and the airport.” While Minister Donohoe is promising a new hard- rail network, a new redesigned metro, or a combi- nation of these, with the controversial BRT (bendy bus), it will take up to 10 years to deliver. This news will come as a crushing blow to many local residents and business people, who are crying out for a proper light rail transport system for the area. Many feel that the government is long-fingering this project, and that this is just a cynical general election ploy, designed to garner votes for his Fine Gael colleagues in the area. Attempting to fob off the hard pressed citizens of the North County, by using the preferred light rail system as an electioneering ploy to win votes at the next general election, is one that will be judged harshly by the local electorate. Plans for a light rail system for the airport and Swords was first mooted around 20 years ago, so taking a further 10 years to deliver this project means that it will then have spanned around six general election periods in total. When the Minister stated that, “We don’t have the foundations for the high capacity public transport system our country needs,” residents and business people alike in the area, will believe that the government is simply kicking the can down the road, and has no real desire to deliver the light rail system that is so badly needed. The fear among most, is that we are going to be saddled with the BRT (bendy bus option), which is fine as a complementary system to a light rail system, but not as a stand alone system. Taking ten years to deliver what has been promised by successive governments, means that an entire generation of people will have been raised on the promise of a proper light rail system for the North County. In the meantime, there seems to be an insatiable appetite for building Luas lines on the southside of the city, which beggars belief for many Continued on page 16 The award winning North County company, Keogh’s Crisps which is based at Westpalstown, Oldtown are getting ready for a bumper season, with the new seed potatoes being planted now. The County Leader paid a visit to this progressive local business and met with Managing Director, Tom Keogh, who spoke about the company’s aspi- rations for the upcoming season. He said, “We’re really looking forward to the new season Generally just after St Patrick’s Day, we start planting the new potatoes and with the good weather, we have been able to start planting at Middleton, near Malahide. Last year was a very bad year for potatoes, but a good one for growth, with one of the best summers on record. However, that led to bumper yields, which dropped the price considerably, well below the cost of production. We’re hoping for a good growing season, but with better prices for 2015,” he said. In farming, there has to be a little hard- ship before there’s any money and if there are problems in the planting, growing or harvesting seasons, this will lead to higher pricing, but fortunately we have not experienced that yet.” He also spoke about land used by the company at Middleton, Malahide for growing potatoes. He said, “We start as close as possible to the coast. The main reason is that there is lighter soil here, which can be cultivated earlier, as it dries out sooner. As it’s closer to the sea, you don’t have the same issues with frost, as further inland. We can plant crops earlier, without a risk of the plants being damaged by frost when they emerge in May and we’re hoping for a great season,” he concluded. Local councillor Anthony Lavin (FG) hascalled for a full review of speed limitscurrently in place in the North County. Hemade his remarks following thelaunch of a new document entitled‘Guidelines for Setting andManaging Speed Limits’, which hasbeen produced by the Minister forTransport, Tourism and Sport,Paschal Donohoe TD.“This document provides advice

and guidance to those charged with respon-sibility for speed limits across the country,

including the local authorities,”Lavinexplained. “With this document forreference, now is an opportune timefor Local Authority Engineers to auditthe speed limits currently in opera-tion in the North County. It is likelythat some changes need to be made– either increasing the speed limit onquieter roads in good condition, or

reducing it on poorer quality roads. We needto ensure that greater consistency is applied

where speed limits are concerned. It is alsorecommended that speed reviews be carriedout every five years,” he said.“The guidelines address a number of areasand sees the introduction of new roadsignage to deal with speed limits in ruralareas on minor local roads and for the imple-mentation of new urban ‘Slow Zones’ in resi-dential areas to reduce the speed limit to 30km/h.” “A speed limit is the maximumspeed at which vehicles may legally travel ona section of road between speed limit signs.Nobody knows our area’s roads as well asthe County Engineer and I would urge thecommencement of a review at the soonestopportunity. That said, it is the responsibilityof a driver to obey speed limits at all times –and a speed limit should never be seen as atarget speed for drivers,” Lavin added.

Busy AGM ForMalahideCommunityForumThe Malahide Community Forumrecently held their monthly AGM andspoke about a number of issues thatare important to the local residents. Firstly, an update was given on theAcquisition and Development of theCasino. When Michael Howard lastaddressed the Forum AGM in March2012, it had been agreed that the FryModel Railway would be acquiredby Bus Eireann. Since then, with thework of a committee and the good-will of Fingal County Council, thanksto the bequest of the late MrMichael Gaffney, the acquisition ofCasino and the land around it andThe Fry Model Railway wascompleted on 23rd December 2014.The collection will be housed assoon as is practical and the workson Casino house will be completed, according to the forum. “It is anticipated that the CountyCouncil will erect a plaque tohonour the contribution of MrGaffney,” said Howard. Thankswere given to everyone who gave

their time and energy to helpachieve the project.Next, there was an update by HeidiBedell from Malahide Tidy Towns.Malahide reclaimed its Gold Medalstatus this year. “A lot of paintinghas been necessary after a spate ofgraffiti,” she said. Extra flowershave been planted and she asked ifpeople growing seeds would giveany spare plants or pots of plants tothe Tidy Towns. She also suggestedthat residents might adopt a patchin certain areas of the village andweed and water there, and ifanyone has spare flower bulbscould they plant them in a publicplace. Other issues raised includedthe question of moving the bus stopfrom Killeen Terrace to alleviate thetraffic congestion when a bus stopsthere and pavement congestionfrom waiting passengers. A Mr. Sheedy said he had spokento Dublin Bus and met with CountyCouncil engineers, and they saidthey are giving it consideration. The chairman then thanked MarkHely Hutchinson on his retirementfrom the committee for his longcontribution and also Margaret Cureat the end of her seven year term asHonorary Secretary. A presentationin appreciation was then made toboth members.

This week we asked:“With Ireland winning the 6 Nations Trophy last Saturday, we askedshould Ireland havebeaten Wales and wonthe Grand Slam?”

Q:

No team ever deserve to win, they have to go andwin. There is a strange thing about Irish teams. When they’re favourite to win, they never play up totheir potential. We lost this match, but that is theway it goes. It is only a game.

Not really, the other team was definitely quicker andbetter than Ireland. They wanted to win. If they hadplayed at home, I had expected that they win. Butno, the better team won and that is fair enough.

Eva Breitwieser

YOURVIEWWith reporter Eva Breitwieser

Yes, they played so well and deserved to win. Tengames in a row is a great record.

Damien Greene, Malahide

Probably not. I think we were a stronger team withBrian O’Driscoll

To be honest, I think Wales had a better defencethan Ireland. They played well, but I think there wastoo much pressure to win because it was the matchthat really counted. They should have done it better, but unfortunately they didn’t.

No. We weren’t good enough at all, to be honest.

It is a Irish team and I’m always happy when theywin, but not on his occasion

In the first twenty minutes they were very poor andthey didn’t play that good after that time. SoWales deservedly won.

Well I thought they played very well!!! I thoughtthey deserved it.

Well, I think they should have won. I was verydisappointed with Ireland. But that is the way it isand you never bet against Wales.

The long running airport pension dispute, which is close to resolution, excludes thecountry’s top airport police and fire chiefsfrom a €5 million sweetener to get the dealover the line. A total of approximately 30highly paid airport police and fire officersare excluded from the ‘transition retirementpackage’ designed for junior membersimpacted by changes to the retirement age.According to sources, the deal was part ofan overall package for members of the trou-bled IASS (Irish Aviation SuperannuationScheme) pension deal, where Dublin AirportAuthority and Shannon Airport Authorityagreed to pay bigger lump sums into a newdefined contribution scheme for more than850 lower paid and older staff members.Trade union, Siptu maintain that anupcoming ballot of all staff will be held onthe basis that the outcome is the best thatcan possibly be achieved in negotiations.Another stumbling block to the resolution ofthe pension dispute concerns anger amongpolice and fire workers over a new physicalfitness and medical policy. This seems tohave been resolved, when it was agreedthat officers found to be unfit for rescue andfirefighting duties can be redeployed withpay and allowances red circled.

Tsipras is holding hisposition that his party will “not go backon what (was) promised” going on tocall on his fellow Eurozone members tostop taking “unilateral decisions.” AsFrank Carson used to say “it’s in theway you tell em” and so itappears that there is plentyof spin coming from bothcamps.Brian Hayes has extolledthe benefits of the 5+ axlevehicle ban from Dublincity centre seven days aweek between the hours of07.00-19.00. Speaking in theParliament last week, Brian toldof the success of this initiative imple-mented eight years ago. He told hisfellow members that 1,000 HGVs perday were removed from Dublin’s quaysalone. He said that the change in thequality of life in Dublin has beendramatic. He told the meeting that such

a ban can benefit other EuropeanCapitals. On a juicer note, it good to see that€1.2m is allocated for the School FruitScheme here in Ireland for 2015/16.This is 75 per cent funded by the EUwith the balance contributed by theIrish Government. This scheme has thepotential to reach 12 million childrenacross 25 countries. It is hoped thatthis intervention which has run since2009 will reverse the trend of decliningfruit and vegetable sales while encour-aging healthier eating habits amongstchildren. It’s success would provideadditional market opportunities forNorth County growers. An expenses scandal appears to be

Continued from page 1people living here. Projections indicatethat the population of Swords will beclose to 100,000 people by the time atransport system will be delivered, andthere’s no guarantee that this willbe the desired light rail system.Local councillor, Darragh Butler(FF) is outraged at the foot drag-ging that Fine Gael are engagingin, and he told the County Leader,“When the Government shelvedMetro North back in 2011 andconfirmed that a review would becarried in 2015, at that time I predictedthat this would be just in time to beanother vague election promise. Just asthey had in 2011, that they would once

again dangle Metro North in front of usfor the 2015/16 election,” he said.“Under no circumstances can we allow asituation where light rail is deemed goodenough for the southside but in the north

county, we have to make do withbendy buses instead. We wantwork to start on a rail solutionsooner rather than later.Unfortunately for anyone in their40’s commuting into the citycentre daily at the moment, feelthat we will all have retired beforea rail solution is put in place at this

rate,” he said.“We should not accept BRT Swiftwaywith a vague promise of a rail link in thefuture. I fear that if BRT Swiftway is given

the go ahead then that’s it, Metro is goneforever no matter what they promise uswith an election on the horizon. Equallyimportant is that under no circumstancesshould we allow a DART spur fromClongriffin to Dublin Airport to proceed. “My real worry is that this Governmentwill fob us off with the Swiftway bendybuses and this awful Dart spur. Yetagain, it would be another great trans-port win for the southside of Dublin inthat they are now connected to theairport and a major defeat for the northcounty.” He concluded, “A rail link from Swords, taking in Dublin Airport and DCU toO’Connell Street, should be the onlysolution that we will accept and we needto make this clear to all parties whenthey come knocking on our doors for the2015/16 General Election. We should notallow ourselves to be conned with bendybuses and airport solutions that bettersuit the southside than the north county”he concluded.

Just Another CynicalElection Promise?
