THANKS NCO MEMBERS FOR JUMPING ON BOARD

Last year as we were starting our preparation for our Change of

Watch Celebration, I challenged our membership to JUMP ON

BOARD WITH….THEIR IDEAS, THEIR HELP, THEIR

SPIRIT….AND THEIR WILLLINGNESS TO SAY “YES”

WHEN WE SAID PLEASE HELP US!!! Our goals were to

strengthen our Squadron and to increase our visibility as we

planned to BRIDGE THE GAP BETWEEN WEST, EAST

AND BEYOND OF OUR GREAT CITY. Together we made

this happen and I believe our Squadron is in a much stronger

position today and is ready with great leadership to move to the

next steps.

We proudly changed our name officially in December to North

Coast Ohio Sail & Power Squadron, updated our By-Laws

thanks to Louise Manke and will soon proudly fly our new bur-

gee thanks to the generosity of Sue Lowe and her family and

Jack Salisbury.

Our membership is on the upswing, we are proud of our new

members who can’t do enough to help and more than grateful

for the help of our seasoned members.

I owe thanks to an awesome Bridge and Executive Committee

who went above and beyond their job descriptions in support of

North Coast Ohio.

Thanks to Elliott for his support as our Executive Officer and

especially our award winning Vessel Safety Check program. If

boaters didn’t come to him, he chased them down in their drive-

ways or marinas.

Our Educational Program grew under Jim& Jim and will defi-

nitely be stronger in the coming year with Jim Christman’s con-

tinued leadership.

I’m grateful to Jerry Nagy who lead the Admin Department for

yet a fourth year and to Marcie, his assistant. The parties, Friday

Night Dinners and cruises were great fun and brought out-

standing fellowship to NCO and our squadron guests.

New member, Bob Thompson, thoughtfully kept our records as

Secretary and was very lucky to be assisted by several talented members: Twila Hauck, Computer Guru, Roster Chairman &

CDR’s Web Assistant to our award winning Web Master, Irene

Rodriguez; Jim Mason, Editor of the award winning Currents

Newsletter; Kate Mott, photographer and Corey Nieding, Sun-

shine Chair.

Thanks to Dave Graf who lead the Treasurer’s Department for

nine years and Joe Poplstein, our keeper of the QuickBooks. My

thanks to the Treasurer’s Department would be incomplete with-

out great thanks to Harry Barnes who stepped into the Treas-

urer’s position mid year and will serve as Treasurer again next

year. Harry also assisted with membership.

Thanks to our Executive Committee who kept us on the straight

and narrow: Mary Glassco, also Grant Writer and Conference

Co- Chair, Susan Rothacker, Conference Co-Chair and Nomi-

nating Committee Chair, Jim Holcepl, Nominating Committee,

Twila Hauck, Nominating Committee, Dave Kinkaid, Pay Pal

and Pat Schulz, Membership.

Finally, thanks to our entire membership for their current and

continuing support. Each & every member has served in their

special and individual way.

I am very proud to have served Rocky River Sail & Power

Squadron NOW North Coast Ohio Sail & Power Squadron as

Commander for a third term.

BOAT SHOW BANANZA!!!

The 2017 IX Center Boat Show has come and gone and will be con-

sidered in the history books as a great one. Of course the local

“Cleveland” weather was in our favor the entire show time. Even

if us boating enthusiasts had competition during the week-end

time in the same gigantic building with the Bridal Show and Sports-

man’s Show, we still did well promoting our mission of Safe Boat-

ing through Education.

My personal thanks to the Berea Squadron and our D/7/Cdr Eileen

Rickard, SN, and her husband P/R/C David Rickard, AP, for orga-

nizing this effort. Surely the highlight was that we had one of Na-

tional’s “Boating Skills Virtual Trainer boating simulator for the

viewing public demonstration and to practice boat driving and

docking procedures. Boat Show Management kept “changing the

rules” as we planned and executed our set-up game plan which

caused us some stress. But then isn’t that the “usual-standard-

operating procedure It-Is-What-It-Is”? BTW Berea Squadron

houses and maintains our boating booth between annual Boat

Shows.

My heartfelt thanks go to our North Coast OH members who gave

their precious time and effort to promote our cause is as follows:

Harry Barnes – put in three days plus ―bull‖ work -- set-up

and tear down

Kay McCartney

Dennis Boylan -- six days and ―bull‖ work--set-up/tear

down and ―techie‖ stuff on the simulator

Liz Glassell

Jim and Julie Holcepl

Herb Hoppe

Elliott and Louise Manke (two days); five days for Elliott as

cochairman (with Berea‘s Dave Rickard), truck driver/

hauler

Jerry and Jan Nagy

Our annual chili cook-off was a great time thanks to the Jerry Nagy,

Marcie Hopkins, newest Life Member Neal Casbian team. Tom

Glassell was First Place with Gail and Richard Ahlers taking Sec-

ond Place Now it’s “story time”. Some members in D/7 have said

they enjoy perusing my articles.

Last year at the chili cook-off, Louise and I took home the wine—

first place award for venison chili. This year we cooked venison

with another wild ingredient (BEAR), kept a secret though for fear

of “the madding crowd ”. Our son-in-law Dave McClain, an avid

hunter, had gone deer hunting in his home state of West Virginia

last November. He came down from his tree stand to gather up

some more camouflage ground cover for concealment. He climbed

back up the tree, and shortly thereafter, low and behold, out came a

large male black bear from the nearby brush. The bear walked

around his tree, sat down on a nearby tree stump, rubbed one side of

his derriere for a few seconds, got up and started to walk away. He

stopped, got up on his hind legs, sniffed the air, dropped back down

and returned to Dave’s tree. He looked up and started to climb the

tree! It was either Dave or the black bear! Dave’s cross-bow arrow

pierced his shoulder and nipped the heart. The bear dropped down

from the tree and ran away into the woods. Dave stayed up in the

tree for another hour then came down and joined his hunting buddy

a little distance down the mountain ridge. There would be no track-

ing a wounded bear in the dark! The next morning they found the

dead bear, all 450 plus lbs. of him. It took three guys and an all-

terrain 4-wheeler five hours to load and haul the bear down the

mountain-side to a nearby road. Driving into town with the bear in

the bed of his truck was a welcomed sight to the locals as a bear in

the area menaces the deer-hunting possibilities. Dave had immedi-

ately to apply for a bear hunting permit “imperiled-for-his-life”, as

it were. Dave had to extract a tooth to determine the age of the bear.

Do not fret. The ground- up sausage in our chili was not from the

side the bear rubbed on the tree stump. The bear’s head and big

front paws are currently at the taxidermist.

Think Spring! If you did not attend the Boat Show, cheer up and go

check your winterized boat at the boat yard or snoop around the

local marine store to banish “cabin fever”. Our 2017 Safe Boating

classes start Monday 6 February in Rocky River.

SAFE BOATING week starts 20-26 May, 2017

Thankfully it is finally February. At least January is out of

the way and hopefully spring is just around the corner. I

really do not like winter!!!

Now that I have that out of my system we can move on.

Starting on February 6, 2017 we a starting an ABC class at

the Don Umerley Center in Rocky River.

As of this writing I have about 16 people signed up for this

class. This is great!!

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the folks who

have helped me over the last year.

Thanks Jim Mason for your help and insight as ASEO. Your

knowledge and insight has helped more than you know.

Thanks to Bob Brown, Mike Zavasnik, Dave Kinkaid, Bob

Brem, Elliot Manke, Bob Thompson and anyone else that I

may have overlooked, for instructing and assisting with

classes.

I want to offer a Seamanship and Piloting class starting in

April. If anyone is interested please let me know.

USPS is about Civic Service, Boating, and as far as I am con-

cerned, Education.

Let’s all get better educated to make boating more fun and of

course safer

TAKE A CLASS Have a great fit out season and stay safe on the water.

Greetings from my snowed in digs in Rocky River

Obviously winter has finally showed its cold & snowy face as

I write/type my last article (I think) for the Currents. It has

been my pleasure to have been your Ad Min Officer for the

last 2 years on the heels of 2 years as Commander and Ex.

Officer heretofore. My heartfelt thanks to Marcie Hopkins

who was so helpful in assisting me this past year, to Neal

Casbean for his devoted bar service, Karl Yanuzzi & his

crew for the Steak & Lobster event, to Cdr. Liz Glassell for

her unbridled help & support, and lastly to my bride Jan, for

her help, support, and advice as we put together many of our

activities. It has been a fun year. one that I'm sure most would

agree was a great social success.

Our 8th annual Chili Cook Off as usual was a huge success

with 34 of our members in attendance. 8 great chilis were

tasted, but only one could be the most liked. This years win-

ner was Tom Glassell. Dinner was followed by a trivia con-

test that I put together. After 25 grueling questions, Julie Hol-

cepl with 16.875 answers correct, won 1st place.

She and Tom both won a very rare bottle of wine. Thank you

Pat Schulz for hosting the party.

As we approach the end of our calendar year and tenure as

elected officers, the following are future events to watch for

and attend as follows:

Welcome from the Treasurer's Department

For those still awaiting checks, Assistant Treasurer Joe Popl-

stein will be back from his Florida Winter Get-away soon.

He and I will be updating the books and writing checks.

The Mid American Boat Show is over again so boating sea-

son can't be far away. Working the show was fun seeing

many of our members window shopping. I did a little more

than window shop, they got me by putting a bigger boat right

across from our USPS display. I couldn't say no.

The January Chili Cook-off was fun and profitable. Looking

forward to the Founder's Day Luncheon hosted by Berea.

(Great food, beer, and speaker)

Thanks to all who have helped me transition into my new roll

as Treasurer, especially Joe, Dave, and the entire Executive

Board.

Thank you!! To all who signed the petition to develop a personalized

USPS Ohio license plate... IT’S HERE!

The Ohio squadrons were successful in the final development of a auto license plate for purchase. The plate can be ordered at the BMV, and online as well for an additional $25.00. ohio.state.gov/license.

The proceeds of the license plate sales go directly to the Ohio squadrons for educational purposes. So at your next renewal, or purchase of a new vehicle, inquire about the NEW USPS License Plate!

Another way to promote and support your squadron.!
