The First People

• Thousands of years ago Indians came• The Cherokee tribe was the largest tribe to

live in North Carolina• They farmed in central areas • Most Native Americans fished, some used

spears and some used nets• Built homes from material of nature • Catawba farmed in central areas• another tribe lived along the rivers (coast)

1585 a group of English settlers began to settle in North Carolina

They landed on Roanoke Island but did not last

At first the settlers were peaceful then war broke out

Colonist first settled along the coast as the colony grew they moved in lands

Within a year the colonist returned to England to get supplies

• In 1629 the King of England claimed the land what is now North and South Carolina and named the land Carolana.

• His son later named it Carolina

Life in the Colony King Charles the 2nd gave a charter to Carolina

Colony. The King gave the colony to 8 English men called the Lords proprietors. The Lords proprietors decided not to rule the settlement over seas. In the early 1650s, colonist moved south to find better farm land. King Charles 2nd gave the colony of Carolina to the proprietors. The proprietors chose governors to rule the land. The land included these present day states North Carolina, South Carolina, Florida, and Georgia.

During the mid 1720s England took control of Carolinas government. In the early 1710s North and South Carolinas were split in two. In the late 1700s North Carolina became a royal colony. England would now appoint a governor for North Carolina. The population grew from over 30 thousand to over 120 thousand.

Work and Trade

• Most North Carolina colonist were farmers because they raised hogs and cattle.

• They grew sweet potatoes, corn, wheat, and pumpkins.

• They used all these things to feed their families.

• They raised crops to be sold at markets

• Some farmers would raise smaller crops like indigo and rice.

• Farmers paid indentured servants to come from England

• Many colonist grew there own crops to feed their families

• Servants work for a certain amount of time before they had to work free as slaves

• Most colonist lived on large farms called plantations

Religion

Some settlers followed the church of England. The other settlers went to the church called Presbyterian church. Many colonist moved to North Carolina to farm. Quaker women worked during church service

Community

• The major crop in North Carolina was tobacco • Fishing and shipbuilding were important jobs for this

colony • Hawks and cattle were raised on farms • North Carolina did not grow as fast as other American

colonies• There was no easy way of getting goods from Europe• Travel was difficult for settlers because the colony was

still frontier

Becoming a State

By 1760s Colonist were angry at the British Governor. In 1768 a group of North Carolina farmers from the west began to speak out. Many colonist moved to Tennessee so they did not have to pay taxes. The British rule spread through the American colonies. War broke out!!! North Carolina was the first settlement to announce independence. On April 12 1776 North Carolinas government adopted a Halifax Resolves. In 1787 Congress adopted the constitution and North Carolina agreed.

on November 21st 1789

It was the 12th state to join the United States
