North Calgary High School Open House

North Calgary High School Open HouseAlberta Education, Alberta Infrastructure and the Calgary Board of Education are working together to design and build a new high school for north Calgary communities. Tonight, we are sharing information on the design of the new high school, including general project information, timelines, site planning, traffic considerations and building design.

Alberta Infrastructure, CBE and Taff Architecture staff are here to answer any questions you may have about the preliminary design, or direct you to the information you are looking for.


New School Timeline

May 28, 2019: Representatives from the Community Association, Calgary Police Service, Calgary Board of Education, Alberta Infrastructure and consultants met to identify community issues or concerns

June 26, 2019: Community Open House (TONIGHT)

July 2019: Response to community open house feedback: report to community association; information posted on www.cbe.ab.ca/newschools - Coventry Hills High

August 2019: Development permit application circulated to community association and to public at large for comment.

TBD: Funding Announced for Phase 2 – Construction

Note: School opening date will not be announced until a contractor is hired and all permits are approved.

Project updates will be posted at www.cbe.ab.ca/newschools throughout the school design and construction phases. During the academic year prior to school opening, the following will occur: • Public open house will be held to share • information on school designation area, walk zone and grade configuration• The Board of Trustees will announce the school name

Your feedback and input will be considered with respect to the planning of:

• Site access, parking and drop-off locations

• Traffic improvements

• General site configuration

• Other building design considerations

• Approved for Phase 1 - design only in June 2018• Construction not yet approved• Located at 12055 Coventry Hills Way NE• 1800 student capacity school• Two-storey building with mechanical penthouse• 16,225 m2 (174,644 ft2) of permanent construction – no modular classrooms• Sustainably designed | LEED Silver certification

Community Association Feedback• On May 28, 2019, Alberta Infrastructure, the Calgary Board of Education and the consultants met with representatives

from the Government of Alberta, City of Calgary, the Northern Hills Community Association and the Calgary Police

Service to identify community issues and concerns. The following feedback was received:

• Intersection along Harvest Hills Boulevard is busy and will require a traffic signal

• Response:Traffic data indicates that a controlled intersection is already warranted. Ongoing consultation with the City of Calgary is being undertaken.

• Bus pick up and drop off location in front of school will im-pact traffic

• Response: Ongoing consultation with the City of Calgary is being undertaken to improve bussing for this site

• School bell times will be coordinated with Nose Creek School to minimize overall impact to the adjacent community

• Location and orientation of the building created locations that were hard to supervise and monitor

• Response: Building has moved and been re-oriented to im-prove visibility across the site

• Configuration of the parking lot extends across much of the site• Response: Parking has been reconfigured and drop-off loop is located closer to the building

• Existing overland storm drainage on this site is impacting adja-cent residents

• Response: A stormwater management plan is required for this site based on its size. Ongoing consultation with the City of Calgary is being undertaken to improve stormwater issues in areas affected by construction.

• The Community Association wishes to rent space in the school• Response: As part of the shared use agreement with the City of Calgary, spaces in the school are available for rent through the City if Calgary website. Instructional area rentals must also be approved by school administration.
