Founded in Vermont in 1974, North Atlantic Books relocated to Berkeley in 1977 whilekeeping its regional birthname. Our long-traditional niches are represented each season,Spring 2009 being no exception. Under our imprint Blue Snake Books, we offer the largestmartial-arts list in English in the world, adding 4–6 new titles a season. Our most unusualmartial-arts items this season are An Obese White Gentleman in No Apparent Distress, anovel by Riki Moss that incorporates the memoirs of the late great American aikido mas-ter Terry Dobson, and Me, Chi, and Bruce Lee, which documents journalist (and self-described “spineless wuss”) Brian Preston’s first-hand experiences of global martial arts.

We also continue to publish in our niches of holistic health (a new edition of MichaelSchmidt’s bestselling Beyond Antibiotics, as well as Jennifer Coscia’s The Holistic Cat andthe second volume of Matthew Wood’s Earthwise Herbal), somatics (Anatomy of Pilatesand Quantum-Touch Core Transformation), outsider science (Cancer and the Search forLost Meaning), Western esoterica (Isaac Newton and the Transmutation of Alchemy), andSlovenian literature (Feline Plague by Maja Novak plus a romantic memoir by Erica John-son Debeljak, Forbidden Bread). Spring 2009 is also a tasty list, from wontons anddumplings (A Tradition of Soup: Flavors from China’s Pearl River Delta) to yellowfin anduni, goji berries and maca (see below).

Our two most successful subniches these days are live (raw) food and reincarnation(physical and metaphysical poles of New Age consciousness). On the heels of our smashhits Fresh and Twelve Steps to Raw Food, we are offering a landmark book by superstarauthor David Wolfe, appropriately named Superfoods. And following the recent break-throughs of 2012, Soul Shift, and The Hierophant of 100th Street, we are announcing twostartling new books about the passage of souls and information from the other side: TheAngel of Auschwitz by Tarra Light and Your Soul’s Plan by Robert Schwartz, as well as themost recent channeled work of Patricia Cori, The Starseed Dialogues.

This season we are debuting a contemporary green niche in the spirit of our 1970sœcological roots with Sustainable Sushi by Casson Trenor.

Although most of our books are strong sellers, do not forget that North Atlantic Booksis an educational nonprofit (501c3), and everything we publish falls under our missionstatement. See http://www.northatlanticbooks.com/store/farm.html.

With more than 100 photographs, this compact guide to eating sushiaddresses the environmental and health issues involved

• According to The Sushi Economy, over 30 million U.S. adultseat sushi regularly

•Science and other respected publications have predicted the “end of seafood” by 2048 unless sustainabilitymeasures are immediately implemented

Sustainable Sushi answers the question on the minds of

millions who enjoy eating fish: how can we indulge the desire

to dine well while keeping our health and the health of the oceans

in mind? With painstaking research found in no other book on the

market to date, this pocket-size guide profiles dozens of the most

common fish and shellfish one might encounter at a sushi bar,

details where and how they are caught, whether or not they are

safe, and how they figure in the current fishery crisis. Written by

a fishery and sustainability expert who was himself netted long

ago by the allure of Japanese cuisine, Sustainable Sushi offers

simple, clear explanations of such topics as mercury and PCB

levels, overfishing, and species extinction. Attractively designed

and featuring quick facts, maps, photos, and illustrations, the

book was written for both the novice and the seasoned sushi

fan. In a storm of seafood shortages and frightening statistics,

Sustainable Sushi shows readers how to enjoy the sushi bar

without guilt.

Beyond AntibioticsStrategies for Living in a World of Emerging Infections and Antibiotic-Resistant Bacteria

Michael A. Schmidt, PhD

A personalized program for attaining and maintaining robust health without antibiotics

• By the author of Brain-Building Nutrition, Childhood Ear Infections, Healing Childhood Ear Infections, and Tired of Being Tired

• Contains the latest scientific research on bacteria and theimmune system

At a time when the numbers of emerging infections and

antibiotic-resistant bacteria are rising sharply, the supply

of new antibiotic drugs has been steadily decreasing. In addi-

tion, many health providers have failed to consider that our

bodies are cloaked in a blanket of bacteria so pervasive that the

bacterial cells outnumber our “human” cells by a factor of ten. In

short, we are living in a microbe’s world and cannot ignore the

very real potential for untreatable serious infections.

In this timely book, Dr. Michael Schmidt proposes we focus

on strengthening ourselves by thinking of our bodies as a “human-

microbe hybrid.” This requires taking action to raise our defenses,

while preserving the integrity of the microbial elements that live

on and within us. Drawing on the latest research from several sci-

entific fields, Schmidt presents a strategy of medicine that can

be used to build and balance our system of immune defense and

repair. He offers a set of general recommendations that can eas-

ily be used to tailor programs to individuals seeking to support

health maintenance, prevent illness, fight active acute or chronic

infections, and foster faster recovery from infections.

Dr. Michael A. Schmidt is a respected authority in the areas of neuro-

immunology and nutritional biochemistry. Through

lectures and publications, he has worked to sim-

plify complex medical topics for consumers. Since

1996, he has had a private consulting practice in

metabolic medicine. He lives in Boulder, CO.

Me, Chi, and Bruce LeeThe Adventures of a Kung Fu Klutz from the Shaolin Templeto the Ultimate Fighting Championship

Brian Preston

A fast, funny ride through the world ofglobal martial arts by a noted journalist

• By the author of Pot Planet (33,000 copies sold)

• The Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) now has millionsof fans around the world

• Praise for Pot Planet: “Gimlet-eyed and often hilarious.”—The New Yorker

What happens when a self-styled wuss sets out to earn a

black belt? Why have Eastern martial arts become so pop-

ular worldwide? Is the Ultimate Fighting Championship a beauti-

ful fusion of East-meets-West martial technique, or shameless

commercialization? These questions and more find answers in

Me, Chi, and Bruce Lee, a rollicking journey through the world of

modern martial arts. Author Brian Preston’s trek takes him from

a kung fu school in his hometown of Victoria, Canada, to the sto-

ried Shaolin Temple in China, back to Canada to meet Brazilian

Jujitsu legend Royce Gracie, and on to Vegas and the thrills of the

Ultimate Fighting Championship. Along the way, Preston discov-

ers a vast array of martial arts practices, theories, and controver-

sies—when he’s not too busy getting a beat-down from a

60-year-old woman. Sprinkled with reflective detours into seri-

ous subjects like the nature of violence and the state of modern

China, Me, Chi, and Bruce Lee expertly blends a lively travelogue,

a droll riff on the “innocent abroad” theme, and an informative

introduction to global martial arts.

Brian Preston has written for major publications including Vogue,

Details, and Rolling Stone. His first book, Pot

Planet, is an odyssey into cannabis culture around

the globe. He lives in Victoria, British Columbia.

A Tradition of SoupFlavors from China’s Pearl River Delta

Teresa M. Chen, PhD, Foreword by Martin Yan

A mix of 150 mouth-watering, delicious, and healing soup recipes and theimmigrant Chinese history and culture behind them

• Includes interviews with and recipes from Cantoneseimmigrants, as well as maps that juxtapose China’s PearlRiver Delta and California’s Sacramento-San Joaquin Deltaregions to show their similarities

Through recipes that use time-honored medicinal ingredients,

A Tradition of Soup provides a fascinating narrative of the

Southern Chinese immigrants who came to the United States in

large numbers during the last half century, the struggles they

faced and overcame, and the soups they used to heal and nour-

ish their bodies. Following the Chinese approach to health, Teresa

Chen, who was born into a family of food connoisseurs and raised

by a gourmet cook, groups the recipes by seasons and health

concerns according to Cantonese taxonomy: tong (simple broths,

soups, and stews), geng (thickened soups), juk (rice soups

or porridges), and tong shui (sweet soups), as well as noodle

soups, wonton and dumpling soups, and vegetable soups. Also

focusing on dahn (steaming) and louhfo (slow-cooking) soups

associated with good health, the book features fresh, natural,

and seasonal food. A Tradition of Soup highlights recipes that

serve a wide range of purposes, from gaining or shedding weight

to healing acne and preventing wrinkles. While some ingredi-

ents may seem foreign to Western readers, most are available

in Chinese grocery stores. To help readers identify and

procure these items, Chen provides a beautifully photographed

ingredients glossary complete with Chinese names, pronuncia-

tion, and detailed descriptions.

The Tao of RejuvenationFundamental Principles of Health, Longevity, and Essential Well-Being

Angelo Druda

An accessible guide to renewal andradiant health based on ancient, formerly secret principles

• Shows readers how to find the “fountain of youth” withintheir own bodies with methods once embraced by Chinesespiritual masters and Hindu Yogis

• Includes detailed information on regenerative medicines, exercises, meditation, prayers, diets, alternative therapies, and much more

At various points in history, Taoists, Christians, and the yogis

of northern India discovered and applied the principles of

the body’s own healing “somas” to unlock the secrets of regener-

ation. Each tradition offers extraordinary examples of longevity

and rejuvenation, but the techniques driving them have been hid-

den, transmitted only from teacher to student. Fortunately, they

were preserved for the sake of mankind, and this inspiring and

practical guide brings them to modern readers.

The Tao of Rejuvenation is based on a simple three-part process

of purification, rebalancing, and rejuvenation. Author Angelo

Druda presents specific recommendations for using these steps

to transform one’s diet, exercise regimen, even one’s sexuality,

so that they all become powerful sources of rejuvenative energy.

Case studies and clear explanations make the practices easier

and more engaging. Druda has worked professionally with medic-

inal herbs for many years, and he incorporates their use into the

process of body renewal. The Tao of Rejuvenation is a timely,

authoritative guide for complementary and alternative medicine

professionals; those in need of radical healing and rejuvenation;

and anyone interested in enhancing their levels of health and

vitality.

Angelo Druda is the founder of Traditional Botanical Medicine and

the Health and Sexuality Editor for DharmaCafe.com. A

senior minister in Mate Moce, the death and dying min-

istry established by his spiritual master, Adi Da Samraj,

he lives in Cobb, CA.

An Obese White Gentleman in No Apparent Distress

Riki Moss with Terry Dobson

A captivating fictionalized memoirportraying the life and wisdom of aikidorenegade Terry Dobson, culminating in an exuberant romance

• Draws on an extensive body of fascinating unpublishedwritings, photos, and tape recordings of Terry Dobson

Based on the life of unconventional aikido master Terry Dob-

son, this novel by his partner Riki Moss is the story of two

souls meeting at a mutually calamitous turning point in their lives.

Fatherless and pushed by his tyrannical mother to the edge of

violence, Dobson turns to aikido to save his life. Twenty-five years

later, he returns to the wreckage of his ancestral summer home on

Lake Champlain feeling too tainted to train, too blocked to write,

and too dispirited to deal with his declining health. He seriously

considers disappearing into the icy waters, but instead drives

through an ice storm and hits a cow in a cornfield where an artist

is chasing her dog . . .

Told through two interwoven timelines—one following his life

through Park Avenue and the Bowery, Vermont, Japan, and Califor-

nia; the other tracking his relationship with the artist—this pro-

foundly entertaining novel features a memorable assortment of

seekers and gurus (real and fictional), spiritual dogs, perform-

ance artists, psychic plumbers, New Age healers, suicidal

parents, old lovers; Ronald Reagan, Robert Bly, Leonard Cohen,

Ram Dass; and the land itself, as compelling as any character.

Riki Moss is a professional artist living in Grand Isle, Vermont. She

was Terry Dobson’s companion during his last

seven years and edited his It’s a lot like danc-

ing. Terry Dobson (1937–1992), author of the

classic bestseller Aikido in Everyday Life, was a

pioneering American teacher of aikido and one

of the few Westerners who studied directly under

its founder, Morihei Ueshiba (1883–1969).

Angel of AuschwitzA Spiritual Memoir of Forgiveness and Healing

Tarra Light

A Jewish girl becomes a Nazi death-camphealer in this gripping imaginative workbased on the author’s past life

• Blends reality, memory, and fiction in a rare approachto the Holocaust from the viewpoint of spiritual and karmic healing

• “If each one of us would follow Tarra’s vision and practiceharmlessness, be more loving and live more peacefully, thevibration of the collective consciousness would in timereveal the truth of this benevolent universe.”—John Randolph Price, author of The Abundance Bookand The Jesus Code

Natasha Pelinski is a young Polish Jew taken to Auschwitz.

Her childhood stolen from her, she quickly matures and in the

process discovers she has psychic gifts. She develops a relation-

ship with the ghost of a professor, who becomes her spirit guide.

He in turn enlists her aid on a mission of salvation for the Jewish

people. As well as helping her survive in the brutal conditions of

the camp, he teaches Natasha the secret of healing and how to

move past anger into compassion. She forms the Sisters of Light,

a group of young women who, although they have few medicines

to offer, bring gifts of love and forgiveness to their fellow prison-

ers. They form a bond of the heart that sustains them and keeps

them connected through the horror of their daily existence.

Author Tarra Light was raised in an East Coast Jewish family

but had little knowledge of the Holocaust while growing up. Dur-

ing past-life regression therapy in 1996, she began to access a

previous life as an inmate at Auschwitz. Her newly unlocked mem-

ories form the basis of this eloquent testimony to the power of

the spirit in the most dire circumstances.

A Reiki master and spiritual counselor, Tarra Light is also an artist

and writer with a focus on the psychology of awak-

ening. In 1987 she received a World Peace Award

for her contribution to world healing. She lives in

Northern Idaho.

The Classical Three-Section Staff

Rick L. Wing

An illustrated introduction for novicesand advanced practitioners to a complex, challenging martial arts weapon

• Includes more than 500 B&W photographs depicting frontand back views of techniques

• The three-section staff has been featured in popular kung fufilms like The 36th Chamber of Shaolin and recently onNational Geographic’s Fight Science show

The San Jie Gun, or three-section staff, is a traditional Chinese

weapon consisting of three short wooden or metal rods linked

by chain. Versatile and difficult, it can be flexible or rigid, long or

short, and an instrument of finesse or brutality. To wield it requires

athletic prowess, courage, and tenacity, marking the person who

masters it as one of substance and fierce individuality. While

the three-section staff has been the weapon of choice for many

advanced martial artists, instructions on its use have largely

remained hidden. In The Classical Three-Section Staff, expert

Rick Wing brings this ancient weapon into the light. Wing breaks

down the complex wheeling maneuvers associated with the

three-section staff into easily understood, step-by step instruc-

tions, and some 500 photographs carefully depict front and back

views of techniques. The book shows multiple applications of the

three-section staff by depicting a sparring set between it and a

traditional spear. Wing demonstrates the dazzling versatility of

the weapon, showing how to use it as a defensive wall, a club, a

blunt projectile, a chain, and more. With a “learn at your own

pace” approach and a solid foundation of descriptive text, The

Classical Three-Section Staff makes using the weapon of “whirling

fury” into an accessible and enjoyable art.

Rick L. Wing began his kung fu studies with Grandmaster Wong Jack

Man as a teenager. After Master Wong’s retirement

in 2005, Wing took over for him as the main instruc-

tor at his school in San Francisco, the Jing Mo

Athletic Association. Wing lives in San Francisco.

Eros AscendingThe Life-Transforming Power of Sacred Sexuality

John Maxwell Taylor

A lively, practical guide to blending love, sex, and spirit based on a wealth ofperspectives and traditions

• Written in an accessible style with a sometimes humoroustone by an author who has been a rock star, playwright, actor, and teacher of spiritual development

• Draws on Eastern philosophies, tantric and Taoist sexualpractices, and modern psychology

The quest for lasting love is one of life’s essential pursuits, in

some ways the most essential. But it’s also a quest that’s

impossible to separate from spiritual and sexual needs. In Eros

Ascending, author John Maxwell Taylor offers a wide-ranging study

of sexual dysfunction in society and explains how healthy

sexuality can be an entryway to universal love and higher

consciousness. Based on Taylor’s twenty-three-year experience

with Taoist practices, the book presents an engaging analysis of

love, relationships, and sexuality from spiritual, romantic, and

sexual perspectives. Taylor melds essential ideas by Jung,

Gurdjieff, and Taoist Master Mantak Chia with science, biology,

spiritual tradition, and current popular culture to shed new light

on this eternal yet misunderstood subject. Not just for couples,

the book is equally useful for single people who want to under-

stand the methods for “learning to love yourself” in preparation

for a fulfilling, long-term relationship. Taylor draws on his eclec-

tic background as a successful playwright, composer, actor, and

musician in this persuasive plan for converting ordinary sexual

energy into food for the soul.

A former rock star who opened for bands including the Rolling Stones

and the Beatles, John Maxwell Taylor is the author of

The Power of I Am: Creating a New World of Enlight-

ened Personal Interaction. He lives in Cleveland

Heights, OH.

Meadowlark EconomicsEcology, Community, and Spirituality

James Eggert, Foreword by Bill McKibben, Afterword by Thich Nhat Hahn

A thoughtful overview of economics froma holistic and humane perspective

• A recent major poll suggests that more than half ofAmericans consider global warming personally important to them

• According to Earth Trends, roughly 13 million hectares offorest disappeared each year between 2000 and 2005

Alarmed by the disappearance of meadowlarks from the fields

near his home, James Eggert embarked on a close study of

the economic and ecological factors behind the loss. His inquiry

led him to conclude that the meadowlark’s survival is a metaphor

for ours—that our future is intimately linked to the same interplay

of economics, culture, technology, and spirituality. In this inno-

vative educational book, Eggert helps readers understand how

our environment is connected to—in fact, a vital part of—our

economy and business culture. In the title essay, Eggert critiques

free-market capitalism, borrowing from Thoreau as he investi-

gates what he calls “meadowlark values” in education and

business. The author highlights the “preciousness of the Earth

itself ” and persuasively describes the creative possibilities in

using science, culture, evolutionary history, and spiritual traditions

to gain a deeper understanding of how we might heal the planet.

A foreword by environmentalist Bill McKibben and an afterword

by renowned Buddhist thinker Thich Nhat Hahn add context to

this authoritative supplement to current economics texts.

James Eggert taught at the University of Wisconsin-Stout for thirty-

three years. His other books include What Is Eco-

nomics?, An Invitation to Economics, and The

Wonder of the Tao, as well as numerous articles

for a variety of publications. A devoted practitioner

and teacher of tai chi, he lives in Colfax, WI.

The Starseed Awakening

Patricia Cori

A renowned clairvoyant guides listenersthrough a transformative process in fivemeditations on her first audio CD

• By the author of The Sirian Revelations trilogy: The Cosmosof Soul, Atlantis Rising, and No More Secrets, No More Lies

• “[Patricia Cori’s work] sounds a prophetic tone that’s beenringing since the dawn of time . . . both illuminating andempowering in a very comprehensive and ultimately lovingway.”—Robert Phoenix, New Age Music editor, emusic.com

Recognized as the Scribe to the Speakers of the Sirian High

Council, benevolent beings of Light who watch over Earth

from afar, Cori starts these audio teachings with the sound of a

meditation bell. The first three meditations act as a relaxing and

heart-opening preparation for the deeper states to follow. Start-

ing with a wake-up call (3:01), a window opens and the Sirians

speak (3:35). Then an invocation calls the Light Ones (2:12). The

final two meditations consist of channeled material that leads

the listener through the powerful process of soul retrieval (14:00)

and the activation of the third strand of DNA (12:25), which unites

listeners with the matrix of higher consciousness. These five steps

represent Patricia Cori’s powerful channeling of higher wisdom

to guide listeners through a life-changing process of spiritual

expansion.

Spoken in Cori’s pleasant low voice, these meditations can

enhance the abilities of Reiki healers, channelers, psychics, and

other Lightworkers, as well as seekers of every persuasion. Their

ultimate goal is to prepare the listener for spiritual growth: the

ascension of the soul to the extraordinary fourth dimension

beyond time.

Patricia Cori founded the LightWorks Association, a nonprofit heal-

ing center, school, and new age library. A prominent teacher and

leader of workshops and seminars, she was a keynote speaker at

the prestigious 2007 Glastonbury Symposium. The host of the radio

program Beyond the Matrix on BBSradio.com, she lives in Italy.

The Starseed DialoguesSoul Searching the Universe

Patricia Cori

The latest teachings from the Sirian HighCouncil, channeled by noted mysticPatricia Cori

• Clairvoyant Patricia Cori tackles Earth’s changes, growingextraterrestrial activity, government conspiracies, andcelestial beings

• By the host of Beyond the Matrix on BBS Radio

The Starseed Dialogues is a clear and concise compilation of

questions Patricia Cori has received from readers, which she

then turned over to the Speakers of the Sirian High Council for

answers. Cori is among many who predict that life on Earth will

change dramatically after December 2012, as we ascend into a

fourth dimension beyond spacetime.

What will happen to us as we approach the point of ascen-

sion? Does ascending in the light body hurt? This book answers

these questions and many others about the direct link between our

evolving DNA; the inner world of Agharta; the current earth

changes and our shift in consciousness; and the significance of vis-

iting sacred sites such as Stonehenge to receive celestial mes-

sages. As always, the Speakers’ message rings clear: do not fear

what lies ahead, for we are about to experience a glorious trans-

formation of consciousness—and although the prophets speak

of doom and destruction, the darkest hours are already upon us.

What awaits us is a brilliant new age of truth, light, and beauty.

Your Soul’s PlanDiscovering the Real Meaning of the Life You Planned Before You Were Born

Robert Schwartz

Ten true stories of individuals whoplanned their lives before birth and how they have grown as a result of their life challenges

• The author is working with promoter Rita Curtis, who alsorepresents Neale Donald Walsch (Conversations with God)and Gary Zukav (The Seat of the Soul)

• “Robert Schwartz has done an excellent job of presentingthe possible explanations of what we are doing here andwhy we are here.”—Dannion Brinkley, author of Saved by the Light

Your Soul’s Plan explores the provocative premise that we are

all eternal souls who plan our lives, including our greatest

challenges, before we are born for the purpose of spiritual growth.

Through compelling profiles of people who knowingly planned

experiences such as AIDS and cancer, parenting handicapped

children, deafness, blindness, drug addiction, alcoholism, losing

a loved one, and severe accidents, this book shows that suffer-

ing is not purposeless, but imbued with deep meaning. Working

with four of the country’s most gifted mediums, author Robert

Schwartz reveals the significance of each individual’s soul plan

and allows us a fascinating look into the “other side.”

Each personal story focuses on a specific life challenge, organ-

ized by type for easy reference. Accessible both to those famil-

iar with the metaphysical aspects of spirituality and to the general

reader, the moving narratives that comprise Your Soul’s Plan help

readers awaken to the reality that they are transcendent, eternal

souls. With this stirring book as a guide, feelings of anger, resent-

ment, guilt, and victimization are healed and replaced by accept-

ance, forgiveness, peace, and gratitude.

Robert Schwartz is a former freelance journalist. After a spiritual

awakening in 2003, he left the corporate sector to

research and write Courageous Souls, the first edition

of Your Soul’s Plan. He lives in Moreland Hills, OH.

Cancer and the Search for Lost MeaningThe Discovery of a Revolutionary New Cancer Treatment

Pier Mario Biava, MDForeword by Ervin Laszlo

A cancer expert’s radical approach to acure that also creates a deeper sense oflife’s meaning

• 2008 studies out of Children’s Hospital of Chicago andNorthwestern University show that some proteins present inembryonic stem cells are very effective in curing cancer

• According to the American Cancer Society, one out of everythree Americans will develop cancer in their lifetime

In this groundbreaking work, Dr. Pier Mario Biava argues that

the problem with cancer is not the disease itself, but how to

treat it, how to approach the affected body. Malfunctioning cells,

he says, need not always be cut out or chemically destroyed: they

can be reprogrammed for normal functioning. This process involves

identifying the information that stem cells receive during embry-

onic growth in the mother’s womb and reapplying it to cancer

cells in the fully developed organism. Thus cancer cells can shift

from multiplying and damaging tissue to healthy growth within

the organism. Dr. Biava’s dramatic story recounts not only how

he came by his key insight but also how he devoted years to its

testing and making it operational. Cancer and the Search for Lost

Meaning also contains fascinating conclusions about what the

lessons of this work can offer in terms of how we view human life

and existence. The book makes a powerful case that cancer is a

by-product of the sense of loss and lack of meaning in modern

society and that healing cancer involves healing that sense of

meaninglessness—a process that can lead to a deeper under-

standing of, and connection to, life.

Pier Mario Biava, MD, is vice president of the International Academy

of Tumor Marker Oncology and a member of the edi-

torial advisory boards of several scientific journals. He

works at the Institute of Research and Cure of Scientific

Character (IRCSC) Multimedica in Milan, where he lives.

Feline Plague

Maja Novak, Translated by Maja Visenjak-Limon

A powerful novel by a leading Slovenianwriter that’s part fabulist folk tale andpart political parable

• The latest installment in the Scala Translation Series thatmeets the rising demand for international literature

• Maja Novak holds a law degree from the Law Faculty inLjubljana and has received several prizes for her writing

Adeftly written novel brimming with magical realist touches,

The Feline Plague tells the story of Ira, a Slovenian child who

discovers early the cruelty of the adult world—particularly the

mistreatment of animals. Ira struggles to reconcile her life with

a world in which people are small-minded, the chances for happi-

ness are few, and petty tyrants rule. She takes a job with The

Lady, a capitalist entrepreneur who runs the Ark, a pet emporium

where she expects “pets will become the new jewelry.” Ira careens

into adulthood alongside a fairy-tale cast: her evil mother and

sisters, a benevolent grandmother, best friend and alter ego Felipe,

a blind painter who moonlights as a window dresser, and a pair of

twins so identical their employer thinks they’re one person.

Acclaimed novelist Maja Novak masterfully conjures a series of

vivid tableaux, setting Ira loose in a world where miniature wooden

animals come to life–where jealousy, dreams, and realities unfold

as Ira’s rite of passage parallels the backdrop of communism’s

dying days and capitalism’s shaky start.

Maja Novak has published four novels, including After the Congress,

or Murder in Territorial Waters and Flatmates, a collec-

tion of short stories (Beasts of Prey), and three chil-

dren’s books. Her work has been translated into several

languages. She lives in Ljubljana, Slovenia.

The Way to GodSelected Writings from Mahatma Gandhi

Mahatma GandhiForeword by Arun Gandhi, Introduction by Michael Nagler

The great spiritual leader’s mostimportant teachings on love, the soul, meditation, service, surrender, and prayer

• Contains short, easy-to-read essays that cover some ofGandhi’s most significant ideas and messages

Mahatma Gandhi became famous as the leader of the Indian

independence movement, but he called himself “a man of

God disguised as a politician.” The Way to God demonstrates his

enduring significance as a spiritual leader whose ideas offer

insight and solace to seekers of every practice and persuasion.

Collecting many of his most significant writings, the book explores

the deep religious roots of Gandhi’s worldly accomplishments

and reveals—in his own words—his intellectual, moral, and spir-

itual approaches to the divine. First published in India in 1971,

the book is based on Gandhi’s lifetime experiments with truth

and reveals the heart of his teachings. Gandhi’s aphoristic power,

his ability to sum up complex ideas in a few authoritative strokes,

shines through these pages. Individual chapters cover such top-

ics as moral discipline, spiritual practice, spiritual experience,

and much more. Gandhi’s guiding principles of selflessness, humil-

ity, service, active yet nonviolent resistance, and vegetarianism

make his writings as timely today as when these writings first

appeared. A foreword by Gandhi’s grandson Arun and an intro-

duction by Michael Nagler add useful context.

Among his many accomplishments, Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi

(1869–1948) pioneered Satyagraha, a philosophy

concerned with truth and resistance to evil through

active, nonviolent resistance. Arun Gandhi, like his

grandfather, is a social and political activist. Profes-

sor Emeritus Michael Nagler founded the Peace and

Conflict Studies Program at UC Berkeley.

• A unique teacher’s guide designed for use by Aikidoinstructors and students

for Teaching and Training provides an ideal companion for both

teachers and students of all Aikido systems. With over 100 illus-

trations and 300 pages of detailed techniques and exercises,

Energy PsychologySelf-Healing Practices for Bodymind Health

Michael Mayer, PhD

A pioneering blend of Eastern wisdomwith Western methods in a program ofproactive, self-directed healing

• By the author of Bodymind Healing Psychotherapy, “athrilling blueprint for the integration of body, mind, andspirit”—Dr. Larry Dossey, author of Reinventing Medicine

• Includes case studies, step-by-step instructions, andhelpful illustrations

Energy Psychology presents a comprehensive approach to

healing that combines leading-edge Western bodymind

psychological methods with a broad system of ancient, sacred

traditions. Also called Bodymind Healing Psychotherapy (BMHP),

energy psychology draws on Chinese medicine approaches, includ-

ing Qigong and acupressure self-touch; kabalistic processes;

methods drawn from ancient traditions of meditation and pos-

tural initiation; and psycho-mythological storytelling techniques.

Drawing on thirty years of training in Tai Chi and Qigong, Dr.

Michael Mayer shows how integrating the essences of these

traditions and methods can restore vitality and give the average

person self-healing tools for physical and mental health. Unlike

the quick-fix books on energy restoration, this book uses time-

tested, age-old practices from sacred traditions in combination

with well-established clinical approaches. Dr. Mayer teaches read-

ers bodymind healing methods to treat anxiety, chronic pain,

addictions, hypertension, insomnia, trauma, and other prevalent

conditions. Written in a clear, intelligible style, Energy Psychol-

ogy includes real-life case studies that highlight the effective-

ness of his techniques.

Michael Mayer is a licensed psychologist specializing in self-healing

methods for physical and mental health. Cofounder

of both the Transpersonal Psychology Program at John

F. Kennedy University and The Health Medicine Insti-

tute, he is the author of four books on bodymind heal-

ing. He lives in Orinda, CA.

Yoga for StutteringUnifying the Voice, Breath, Mind & Body to Achieve Fluent Speech

J. M. Balakrishnan

A holistic approach to overcomingstuttering based on simple vocal andphysical yoga exercises

• 30 B&W photographs guide the reader step-by-step throughthe exercises

• There are 127,000 speech therapists in the U.S. and 3million adults and children who stutter

Stuttering, caused by a disorder in the brain’s right hemi-

sphere, can limit one’s life in a variety of ways, from job

choices and advancement to social and romantic opportunities.

Typical remedies emphasizing antidepressants and electronic

devices have had mixed results at best. Yoga for Stuttering

takes a fresh approach based on ancient methods. Author J.

M. Balakrishnan combines an understanding of the neurolog-

ical aspects of stuttering with yoga methods long used in India

for remediation to form a new, natural method for improving

vocal fluency. The book presents three related branches of yoga

and their accompanying practices, nada yoga (chanting and

vocalization), hatha yoga (yoga poses), and raja yoga (guided

meditations), providing the reader with sets of voice, breath-

ing, and physical exercises to help relax the body and mind,

relieve chronic tension, and achieve fluent speech. The book

features photos and illustrations to make the method easy to

follow, and no prior knowledge of yoga is required. Yoga for

Stuttering was created to meet the needs of those who have

not obtained relief through traditional methods and is aimed

at both speech pathologists and individuals looking for a

holistic, drug-free approach to the condition.

J. M. Balakrishnan has been a speech-language pathologist and pub-

lic speaking coach for 30 years, and has served over

2,000 clients in more than 100 schools as their primary

speech therapist. Her yoga-based program has helped

Reiki: The True StoryAn Exploration of Usui Reiki

Don Beckett

A groundbreaking work about Reiki’sorigins, its founder, and the secretteachings that inspired it

• There are an estimated one million Reiki practitioners worldwide

• Includes 95 color and 17 B&W images and photographsdetailing traditional Reiki positions and techniques

Reiki: The True Story is a comprehensive investigation of Reiki

as both a healing practice and a lifelong path of spiritual

awakening. Author and Reiki expert Don Beckett weaves together

a new story about Reiki’s origins and its founder’s true vision.

The foundation of this book is the teachings of a group of Reiki

founder Makao Usui’s original students, who held their master’s

knowledge in secrecy for more than seventy years.

After a general introduction to Reiki, Beckett presents a thor-

ough history of the discipline (including the testimony of some

of Usui’s students) as well as an in-depth manual for practice.

The author rounds out his exploration with material from world-

renowned, contemporary Reiki Masters, Beckett’s own insights

into the nature of Reiki energy, as well as information about the

chakra system, yin and yang, and the Five Transformations. The

book concludes with a chapter entitled “Beyond Reiki,” which

bridges knowledge of Reiki with the lesser-known practice of

Johrei. Thorough explanations coupled with cutting-edge discov-

eries about Reiki’s past make this a compelling volume for novice

and experienced practitioners alike.

Forbidden BreadA Memoir

Erica Johnson Debeljak

A witty, touching memoir of an East-Westromance set in the tumultuous years ofpost-communist Slovenia

• Ljubljana, the setting of much of this story, is anincreasingly popular tourist destination comparable toPrague for its culture and beauty

• Debeljak is the winner of the 2007 Glimmer Train “FamilyMatters” contest

Forbidden Bread is an unusual love story that covers great

territory, both in geography and emotions. Author Erica

Johnson leaves behind a successful career as an American finan-

cial analyst to pursue Ales Debeljak, a womanizing, bohemian

Slovenian poet who catches her attention at a cocktail party. The

story begins in New York City, but quickly migrates, along with

the author, to Slovenia. As she tries to forge an identity in her

new home, she finds ways to adapt as Slovenia is changing from

a communist to a capitalist society. A complicated language,

awkward ethnic jokes, and old-fashioned sexism are just a few of

the challenges Debeljak faces on her journey. Happily, she mar-

ries Ales and comes to love her husband’s family as well as the

fast-disappearing rural traditions of this beautiful country. Set

against the dramatic backdrop of the 1991 Yugoslavian

ten-day war, Forbidden Bread shows a worldly, courageous

woman coming to grips with her own limitations as she adapts to

a new culture.

Erica Debeljak’s essays and stories have recently appeared in Prairie

Schooner, Common Knowledge, Context,

and Eurozine. She is the author of three

previous books in Slovenian, among

them Foreigner in the House of Natives.

She lives in Ljubljana, Slovenia, with her

husband Ales.

The Philosophy of Tai Chi ChuanWisdom from Confucius, Lao Tzu & Other Great Thinkers

Freya and Martin Boedicker

An annotated collection of ancientwritings that illuminate the spiritual andphilosophical sources of Tai Chi

• According to the National Center for Complementary andAlternative Medicine, nearly 400,000 people practice Tai Chifor health purposes

• The German edition is currently in use by several Tai Chiorganizations as a standard book for teacher training

The essence of Tai Chi Chuan lies in the rich philosophy of

ancient China. While most Tai Chi practitioners are aware of

the value that studying Chinese philosophy can bring to their

practice, it is often difficult to pick out those texts that are most

relevant to Tai Chi and connected to its development. The Philos-

ophy of Tai Chi Chuan presents, for the first time, a concise

overview of the Chinese martial and spiritual philosophies that

drive this ancient tradition.

Authors Freya and Martin Boedicker, who teach Tai Chi through-

out Europe and South Africa, present freshly translated excerpts

from such popular and widely studied works as the Tao Te Ching,

the I Ching, and The Art of War, as well as writings by philoso-

phers and strategists such as Zhuangzi and Wuzi. Each chapter

of this concise volume focuses on a single work or philosopher,

and includes a short history of each one as well as a description

of their relevance to Tai Chi. An extensive glossary of important

Chinese terms rounds out the book. The Philosophy of Tai Chi

Chuan offers readers a direct connection with the concepts that

form the foundation of Tai Chi, inspiring a deeper understanding

of the art and its applications.

Freya and Martin Boedicker run the Forum for Traditional Wu Tai Chi

Chuan in Germany. They are long-time stu-

dents of Ma Jiangbao, the son of Wu

Yinghua and Ma Yueliang. Both have pub-

lished articles on Tai Chi theory and appli-

cation. They live in Willich, Germany.

Isaac Newton and the Transmutation of AlchemyAn Alternate View of the Scientific Revolution

Philip Ashley Fanning

An authentic historical mystery thatunveils Isaac Newton’s shadow career asan alchemist

• Recasts a famous thinker’s career within a secretive milieuof esoteric intrigue (à la The Da Vinci Code) that suggests aradical new view of history and science

Isaac Newton was a dedicated alchemist, a fact usually obscured

as unsuited to his stature as a leader of the scientific revolu-

tion. Author Philip Ashley Fanning has diligently examined the

evidence and concludes that the two major aspects of Newton’s

research—conventional science and alchemy—were actually

inseparable. In Isaac Newton and the Transmutation of Alchemy,

Fanning reveals the surprisingly profound influence that New-

ton’s study of this hermetic art had in shaping his widely adopted

scientific concepts.

Alchemy was an ancient tradition of speculative philosophy

that promised miraculous powers, such as the ability to change

base metals into gold and the possibility of a universal solvent

or elixir of life. Fanning compellingly describes this carefully tended

esoteric institution, which may have found its greatest advocate

in the career of the father of modern science. Relegated to the

fringes of discourse until its twentieth-century revival by innova-

tive thinkers such as psychiatrist Carl Jung, alchemy offers a key

to understanding both the foundations of modern knowledge and

important avenues in which we may yet discover wisdom.

An experienced scientific editor, Philip Ashley Fanning devoted a

number of years to uncovering the truth about Isaac

Newton’s alchemical career, resulting in this pioneer-

ing study. Also the author of Mark Twain and Orion

Clemens: Brothers, Partners, Strangers, he lives in

San Francisco.

The Anatomy of Pilates

Paul Massey

A comprehensive guide to one of thefastest-growing fitness activities

• An estimated 11 million people in the United Statescurrently practice Pilates

• Contains 175 full-color, detailed anatomical illustrations

Created by Joseph Pilates during the early 20th century, Pilates

is used by millions today to improve their physical and men-

tal well-being. Much of its appeal lies in its simple, low-impact

approach, which is ideal for injury prevention, rehabilitation, and

general physical health. Based on a series of precise movements

and the employment of equipment such as rubber balls and exer-

cise bands, Pilates emphasizes concentration, control, alignment,

core stability, and proper breathing.

The Anatomy of Pilates shows what actually happens to the

body’s muscles and joints during Pilates exercises. Each two-page

spread features detailed anatomical illustrations of an exercise

(with muscle actions highlighted in red), a detailed description

of the exercise and its objectives, the particular breathing pat-

tern to be used, a list of the specific muscles being worked, visu-

alization techniques, complementary exercises, and more. The

Anatomy of Pilates is an accessible, authoritative guide for current

and prospective teachers of Pilates, practitioners at all skill levels,

physical therapists, and other health professionals.

Paul Massey is a Pilates expert and chartered physiotherapist with

a clinical practice focusing on the application of Pilates

in the sporting world. He has written or co-written sev-

eral books on the subject, including Sports Pilates:

How to Prevent and Overcome Sports Injuries and The

Pilates Prescription for Back Pain. He lives in Kent, Eng-

land.

The Earthwise HerbalA Complete Guide to New World Medicinal Plants

Matthew Wood

Volume two of a comprehensive encyclopedia of herbs

• Describes more than 130 herbs and includes over 25 illustrations

• According to the World Health Organization, 25% of modernmedicines are made from plants

In this companion volume to The Earthwise Herbal: A Complete

Guide to Old World Medicinal Plants, Matthew Wood, an expert

herbalist who has used medicinal herbs with tens of thousands

of patients over a twenty-five-year career, provides detailed

descriptions of New World (North American) herbs and their uses.

Organized as a materia medica (names and descriptions of

herbs/plants are listed alphabetically), the book explains

the use of the whole plant (not just “active ingredients”) in the

treatment of the whole person and describes symptoms and

conditions that the plants have been successful in treating—

from digestive ailments, headaches, and high blood pressure to

asthma, skin rashes, and allergies, to name a few.

Wood, who has systematically studied ancient and traditional

herbal literature, takes a historical view and presents informa-

tion in a thoughtful, engaging, nontechnical style. In addition,

he provides remarkable case studies as well as insight into the

“logic” of each plant—its current and past usage, pharmacolog-

ical constituents, and other elements that together produce a

comprehensive portrait of each herb.

Matthew Wood is a registered herbalist of the American Herbalists

Guild, the only self-regulating body of prac-

ticing herbalists in the United States. The

author of five previous books including Vital-

ism and The Book of Herbal Wisdom, he lives

on an herb farm in Maple Plain, MN.
