LIFE IN CHRIST Wisdom Rickey Wade Pastor, Coleman Memorial UMC The writer of Proverbs shares these words with us, “Get wisdom; get insight: do not forget, nor turn away for the words of my mouth. Do not forsake her, and she will keep you; love her, and she will guard you” (vv. 4:5-6). My grandfather was a sharecropper with a third-grade education. He was also one the wisest men I have ever known. I have studied Quantum Mechanics under a professor who claimed to have been a student of Enrico Fermi. I have also discussed theology with an Archbishop of Canterbury and Oxford scholars. However, my grandfather remains one of the wisest men I have met. To some extent, this is because he was my grandfather and I loved him. In another regard, it was because he possessed more than knowledge. You see, wisdom and knowledge are not the same thing. A smart person is not necessarily a wise person, and a great many wise people have little in the way of formal education. I am a strong proponent of education; however, the Bible makes it clear that wisdom is not simply a gift of education, it is a gift of God. Wisdom comes from an encounter with God in such a way as to discern creation. Wisdom involves an appropriate means of applying knowledge. In some regards, wisdom involves God’s Spirit speaking with our spirit in ways that are too deep for words. According to the writer of Proverbs, if we do not forsake wisdom, if we love wisdom, and if we accept her as a deeper gift of God, she will guard us. That is, wisdom will help one have a long and prosperous life. Of course, there are no guarantees, but as a rule, wiser people have a more satisfying life than do fools. Therefore, words like those of Psalm 1 make perfect sense, “Happy are those who do not follow the advice of the wicked, or take the path that sinners tread, or sit in the seat of scoffers; but their delight is in the law of the LORD, and on his law, they meditate day and night. They are like trees planted by streams of water, which yield their fruit in its season, and their leaves do not wither. In all that they do, they prosper. The wicked are not so, but are like chaff that the wind drives away. Therefore, the wicked will not stand in the judgement, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous; for the LORD watches over the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked will perish.” In 2017, I encourage you to pursue knowledge; it is a grand thing. Moreover, I encourage you to pursue wisdom. Enter a time of meditating on the word of God day and night. Allow God to implant within you a sense of life that is possible regardless of education. Allow God to speak to you some of the great mysteries of life. Commit yourself to be being, “Happy are those who do not follow the advice of the wicked, or take the path that sinners tread. This year, find a church, grow in God, and love wisdom, she will guard you.
