    Exercise No. 1

    General Situation

    1. Th e BARNSTAPLE BA Y area is assumed to be part of th e coastof FRANCE. Th e coast is assumed to be as shown on th e map betwreen

    iORTE POINT an d HARTLAND PCOINT (both inclusive). It is assumed to

    ru n du e north from ROCKHANi BAY (o n th e north side of 1IORTE POINT),

    an d du e south from HARTLAND POINT. All is land east of this assumed

    coastline.

    2. Th e enemy holds th e entire coast, in both directions from

    the BARNSTAPLE BAY area, in considerable strength, divisions holding

    sectors measuring about 25 to 35 miles in width. Al l sectors aretopographically similar to the BARNSTAPLE BA Y sector, an d are fortified.

    on about th e same scale.

    3. A panzer division is located in th e EXETER area. This divi-

    sion can close in the BARNSTAPLE BA Y area within 24 hours after th e

    beginning of an assault. Another panzer division ca n be expected to

    close in th e area within 48 hours of an assault.

    4. The I Corps (reinforced) has been designated to invade FRANCE

    near BARNSTAPLE BAY. The I Corps is at present located in the vicinity

    of embarkation points approximately 80 miles by water from th e coast

    of FRANCE.

    First Special Situation

    1. On the CG ls t Infantry Division wa s called to th e Head-

    3. a. The 1st Bn CT will land at Beach "C" penetrate thehostile beach defenses near the boundary between Bns and the northernhalf of the enemy combat post defending the southern end of WoolacombeBeach and capture the high ground north of Rickwell Down. It willthen seize the h i l l south of Willingcott and advance thereafter toth e line of the Southern Railway - Dean. The 1st Bn wil l maintaincontact with th e 2nd In f on the right.

    b. The 2nd Bn Combat Teaa wil l land at Beach "D" and immediatelycapture Woolacombe and th e high ground north and south thereof. Itwil l then advance to the east and seize th e general line of the DEAN -ILFRACCMBE road within th e battalion zone of action and prepare withoutdelay fo r further advance. The 2nd Bn will protect the l e f t flank ofthe regiment.

    c. The 3d Ranger Bn will land a t Beach "E", establish contactwith the 2nd Ranger Bn operating near Mortehoe. It will then advancesouthwest generally along the hortehoe - jortehoe Sta Road and assistthe 2nd Bn in capturing the high ground near iortehoe Sta, and assistthe advance of the 2nd Bn CT to the line of the Dean - IlfracombeRoad and await further orders.

    d. The 3d Bn Ct with the anti-tank company and the Cannon Platoon-attached (Reg Reserve) will be prepared to land at Beach "C" or "D".

    One liaison group of 1 officer, 2 messengers and 1 radio operatorequipped with radios will land with each assault Bn CT, establishclose contact with them and facilitate employment of the Reserve CTin the zone of action of either assault Bn.

    3. a. Co E will land on Beach "D" in its zone of action,immediately reduce weapons firing north along the beach from positionslocated near Potters Hill, capture Potters Hill, advance east inits zone of action and in conjunction with and assist the Ranger Bnand Parachute Troops assist Co F in capturing the high ground nearMorthoe Station. It will then seize the ground west of the Dean -Mullacott Cross road mnd prepare for further advance to the east.

    Co S will land on Beach "D" in its zone of action, immediatelyreduce small arms weapons firing south along the beach from positionsnear Woolacombe and capture Woolacombe and-the high ground to the norththereof. It will then advance to the east, capture the high groundnear Morthoe Station, assisted by the 3d Ranger Bn and Airborne troops,advance to the northeast and seize th e nose which runs north just westof the Mullacott Cross - Ilfracombe road. It will then protect the

    left flank of the battalion.

    Co G with one Platoon (Heavy MQ) Co "H" attached will land onBeach "D" and be prepared to operate in the zone of advance of either

    Co "E" or Co "F". 1 officer or NCO and the runner of Co "G" will beassigned to each

    SOLUTION TO FOURTH REQUIRB'MENT

    2. Co"E" will land at Beach "D" with the 1st and 2ndPlatoons abreast, the 1st Platoon on the right, immnediatelyreduce weapons firing from positions near POTTERS HIIL, andcapture POTTEhS HILL. It wil l t ien assis t Co "F" in th ecapture of the high ground near IMORTHOE STATION and advance

TheCompany will be prepared to assist the 1st Battalion by firein the capture of HILL 688 - (1000 yards) NORTH of V-I ;LLINGCOTTand wil l coordinate that action with operations of the 101stAirborne Division from the EAST.

    3. a The 2nd Platoon will land at Beach "D" on a200 yard front and will advance to th e EAST with i ts l e f t rest-

    ing generally opposite the SQUTITEST EDGE of WOOLACOIBE. Itwill immediately locate and reduce hostile weapons firing NORTHfrom positions near the NORTH side of POTTERS HILL and assisted

    by th e 1st Platoon capture POTTERS HILL. It will then advanceto th e EAST along the draw EAST of WOOLACOMBE, ass is t Co "E"in th e capture of th e high ground at MORTHOE STATION and awaitfurther orders.

    b Th e 1st Platoon will land at the SOUTH of Beach "D"and with its right resting on th e Battalion right boundaryassis t the 2nd Platoon in th e capture of POTTERS HILL and thencapture th e high ground to th e SOUTH as fa r as th e SOUTH BOUNDARYof th e Battalion. It will then advarce to the NORTHEAST alongthe high ground parallel to th e GEORGEHAM - ILLINGCOTT ROADto a position near vLLINGCOTT where it will await furtherorders.

    c Th e 3d Platoon will land in rear of the 2nd Platoon,clear the beach without delay, and follow th e 2nd Platoon tothe bend in TOOLACOIIBE - MORTHOE STATION ROAD, 1000 yardsNORTHWEST of WILLINGCOTT where it will await further orders.

    3. a. Th e 4th Squad upon landing will deploy on the rightat once and will advance rapidly on the north-westside of Potters Hill, quickly locate hostile weaponsan d by evasive action close with and capture the

    Weapons. It will then advance to the crest of POTTERSHILL, capture th e northern and await further orders.

    b. The 5th Squad upon landing wil l deploy on the l e f t atonce and advance on th e knoll at the base of th enorthern end of POTTERS HILL. It will quickly locateth e most favorable point in th e hostile position andassault and capture the knoll. It will then assist

    the 4th Squad in the capture of POTTERS HILL byattacking from the north,

    c. The 6th Squad will land in near of and follow the 5thSquad, It will take up column formation and be preparedto protect the left flank of the platoon or going intoaction on the left of the platoon.

    2. Th e 4th Squad will land at Beach "D" on the right of th ePlatoon, quickly locate and capture hosti le weapons firing from

    thenorth western side of POTTERS HILL. It will then advance up

    the western side of POTTERS HILL to the crest, capture th e northernend and await further orders.

    3. On landing the Squad will rapidly take up a Squad columnformation preceded by the reconnaissance group.

    The reconnaissance group (consisting of four (4) men) willadvance rapidly to the location of enemy obstacles opposite the

    northern side of POTTERS HILL where it will quickly locate the mostfavorable point through which the squad will pass and attack hostileweapons firing from positions near POTTERS HILL.

    Th e squad (less the reconnaissance party) wil l takeposition in rear of and conform to th e advance of the reconnaissanceparty and will be deployed abreast of the reconnaissance group onlywhen necessary to overcome hosti le resistance.

    i. (1) Ranger Bns - The 1st Ranger Bn will land on

    MORTE POINT at H-3 hour with the initial objective of capturingthe coast defense battery on this point. Its intermediateobjective will be to hold MORTE POINT during the main assaultlandings. It will then proceed to the final objective (seeOpns Overlay). Contact will be maintained with the BRITISHForces on the north.

    (6) The 2nd Ranger Bn will land on BAGGY POINT atH3 hours with the initial objective of capturing the CoastDefense Battery. Its intermediate objective will be to hold

    BAGGY POINT until the landing of the main body when it willassist the 1s t Infantry in landing. It will then be attachedto the 1st Infantry.

    k. Parachute Bn - (1) - A Barachute Bn will belanded at the objective of its Task Force about 5.3/4 mileseast of the top of MORTE POINT with the objective of attackingthe heavy gun emplacements along the eastern most part of theDivision objective. (See Annex II, Air Plan).

    Field Order 1

    Maps:

    1. a. The area along th e DEVON coast is occupied in

    considerable strength by GEPRMAN forces. Th e beach area immedi-

    ately above high water ha s been wired, mined and otherwise

    fortified fo r defense. Reconnaissance shows that there ar e

    some underwater obstacles but it is no t considered that this

    will prevent landing. We have ai r superiority over the place

    of landing.

    b. Th e first infantry division reinforced ha s th emission of establishing a beach head in it s area of sufficient

    depth to remove observed artillery fire from the shore an d to

    enable follow up divisions to land. The 2nd Infantry RC T will

    land at Red Beach on D-day an d seize the high ground to the east

    of the beach, secure the initial assault line reorganize an

    advance to th e intermediate objective where an attack will be

    launched against the division final objective. The first

    infantry RCT will land to the left (north) of the second infantry

    and the southern boundary is the division boundary (TAW RIVER).

    c. Naval Fire Support - This regiment will be supported

    by naval fire support from various support craft (see Landing

    Schedule).

    d. This regiment will be reinforced by 1 Bn Field

    Irtillery, 1 Medical Collecting Co, 1 AA Bn , 1 Far Shore Bn,

    1 Tank Co.

    2. a. This regiment will land on Red Beach with th e

    final objective of securing a line generally along th e L & SW

    b. The third battalion will be in the reserveinitially and after landing will occupy the high ground withinthe area of the initial objective.

    Field Artillery - Field Artillery will initially beunder control of the Regimental Commander and will land uponcall (see Landing Schedule).

    Tank Destroyer Bn - Tank Destroyer Bn will land on RedBeach after the second battalion has cleared the beach. Onecompany will then be attached to the second battalion and thebattalion (less one Company) rill be in reserve under regimentalcontrol.

    Tank Batta l ions One Gempany will be attached to eachbattalion. The Tank CoGpny attached to the f i r s t battalionwil l be in small craft and the balance of the Tank Battalion -will be carried in large craf t (see Landing Schedule).

    C7'S Co - One platoon will be attached to each of theRifle Companies of the f i r s t battalion.

    Field Order i1

    1. a. The area along the DEVON coast is occupied inconsiderable strength by GERMAN forces. The beach area immedi-ately above high water has been wired, mined and otherwise forti-fied for defense. Reconnaissance shows that there are someunderwater obstacles but it is no t considered that this willprevent landing. We have air superiority over the place oflanding.

    b. Firs t infantry division reinforced wil l attack thecoast of DEVON and seize and hold the high ground along the

    division objective. The second infantry will land on Red Beachin a column of battalions, and after over-running the shoredefenses they wil l advance to the f inal objective and seizeand hold this area.

    2. a. The first battalion with the following attachments:1 Co Combat Engineers1 Platoon Smoke CoDet of Shore Party and Shore Fire Control Party

    wil l embark in small landing craft from APA #17 during darknesson D-day and wil l effect a landing twenty minutes after f i r s tl ight on Red Beach. It wil l clear the beach of small resistanceand cut lanes from the beach defenses, and will then driverapidly to the line of the initial objective, whereupon it willreorganize and continue the attack to secure the final objectivewithin its zone of action protecting the left (north) flank ofthe second infantry and maintaining contact with the firstinfantry to the north.

    GENERAL PLAN:1. The 20th Tactical .i: Force will support the operations

    of U.S. Task Force using the combat air units shown in the orderof battle. This support will be coordinated with three landingphases, i.e.
