INTRODUCTION

The Norfolk Commission on Aging and Long Term Care (“Commission”) has

compiled this guide as a resource for seniors, care-givers, and their family members.

The purpose is to provide information to those confronted with specific elder care and

related matters to access available community resources. The Commission concluded

that it is oftentimes a challenging task for the public to identify the specific type of

services that each public or private business provider offers and how to initiate contact

for more detailed and individualized information. Realizing that seniors and their

families can feel be overwhelmed in the process, the Commission has assembled a list

of providers, organized by topic and geographic location, that is intended to serve as a

useful starting point in directing the community to a need-specific provider when

necessary.

The paper version of the guide will only be available at the designated locations

and not intended to be removed. However, this guide is also available on the City of

Norfolk website. To review an electronic version of this guide, (1) use the web address

www.norfolk.gov; (2) click on the tab Government, and that page appears, on the left

side, click on Departments for a listing of the City departments and then (c) select

Human Services, scroll down and click on Senior Resources, select the Senior

Resources. There is a magnification icon located at the top right of each page, which

may be helpful in making the data more readable and user-friendly. You are

encouraged to take copies of these website instructions with you to make it easier to

review the information in an electronic format.

Please note that contact and other information may change after the Commission

prepared this version of the guide. If you learn that any of the information listed here

The Commission envisions periodically updating this list, and your help in

Dear Citizens of Norfolk and South Hampton Roads,

Founded in 1976, “The Norfolk Task Force on Aging” (NTFA) began as a community planning service offering assistance to agencies whose primary purpose was to support older citizens. In keeping with that purpose, the members come together to share ideas in order to meet the ever changing needs of our community’s elderly population. We do this by partnering with businesses and area service providers to bring these much needed resources to Norfolk seniors.

In support of our mission, NTFA is pleased to become the conduit for sharing information on resources for older adults in the Norfolk Senior Resource Guide, originally created and developed by the Commission on Aging and Long Term care.

This valuable document will be updated on a quarterly basis and will be posted on the City of Norfolk website at www.norfolk.gov by the Health and Humans Services Department in support of the senior community.

To update an existing posting, or to include a new one, please forward information to [email protected]. Hard copies of this Resource Guide are located throughout the community, specifically at the reference desks in local libraries throughout Norfolk.

The Norfolk Task Force on Aging is a part of the “Greater Coalition on Aging of Hampton Roads”, which is made up of hundreds of professionals who meet monthly in every city throughout Hampton Roads. NTFA meets every third Friday of the month from 8:30 -10:00 am at various venues in Norfolk.
