By Dave ScottWalking around Simcoe last Friday morning, you could

just feel the positive energy building towards the Mumford & Sons show Saturday night. Folks were busy setting up their stands… restaurant volume was already picking up. Over at the old Westbrook’s store, folks were lined up halfway down the block waiting for their turn to buy some Gentlemen of the Road paraphernalia. Meanwhile over in front of the Blue Elephant the tables were being put in place for what would prove to be a very busy weekend.

The whole weekend came to a climax Saturday evening when Mumford & Sons took the stage and our photographer extraordinaire, Bill Meems, was on hand to catch some incredible shots…

Bill explained that the energy from the pit when Mumford & Sons came on was unlike anything he had experienced before. He has shot concerts before, but this one was different and he felt nervous because it was such a big event for our community.

One of the highlights was when Mumford & Sons welcomed the other bands back on stage with them to perform the The Weight, by The Band, which was a fitting tribute to the late Rick

Danko of The Band who grew up here in Norfolk. By all accounts the event was a huge success, no police

reports to speak of, Live Nation was pleased with the success of the event and the folks of Norfolk County were able to be part of one of the best festivals going.

Kudos to the organizers, volunteers, local businesses and police who welcomed over the 35,000 visitors to Norfolk… thank you!

PS. For those who want to see more of Bill’s photography work, go to www.facebook.com/BThreePhotography.

Big SplaSh of the Week!

Congrats go out to Melina Weiler and Maddy Goch who participated in the 15U Female Challenger Division 2013 Ontario Volleyball Association Provincial Beach Championship held at Ashbridges Bay in Toronto on July 27 and 28.

Ninety-five teams were registered for the event and the teams were put in three divisions based on their best three results from the 2013 beach tour, which runs May to August.

Both girls play school and club volleyball but this was their first year playing beach.

Beach is different from indoor volleyball - the court is smaller, there are only 2 players not 6, there is no open hand tipping of the ball and the games go to 21 instead of 25.

The matches are best 2 out of 3 with the first two games going to 21 and you must win by 2 points. The third tie breaking game is played to 15.

The local girls played in pools of 5 teams on Saturday and finished 2nd in their pool division. They won 2 matches on Sat and took one game from the team that finished first in pool play. They played some hard fought battles with some matches requiring a third game.

On Sunday the girls went undefeated in 4 elimination matches to claim the gold!

Maddy also finished first in the 15U Female Championship OVA Beach Tournament held in Cambridge July 13 with partner Victoria Scheers.

By MARG WERDENIt must be the full moon!

Between the Mumford and Sons event on the weekend and having family and friends sitting around the campfire over the past week, I’ve spent more time than usual outside in the evenings. This inevitably led to some observations of the sky and, in particular, the full moon we had last week.

I have often heard the terms “harvest moon” and “hunters moon” when talking about full moons in the autumn. Since the harvest has started, I decided to see if this full moon was the Harvest Moon. What I learned is that every full moon throughout the year has a name. Many cultures around the world have given names to the full moons, including the Chinese, Old English, New Guinea, Celtic, and North American tribes. Often these names helped keep track of the seasons and the names were used to identify the entire month during which each occurred.

In North America, the most well known of the various Native American tribes’ names for the full moons come from the tribes that lived in the north-eastern United States and southern Ontario and Quebec. These names were later adopted by early European settlers who also invented some of their own names, some of which have been passed down through time.

Although there are some variations in the full moon names, the following are the Algonquin full moon names along with some of the most common names given by other tribes or Europeans:January: Wolf Moon (Old Moon, Moon After Yule)

During the coldest part of the year when the snow was deep, wolf packs howled hungrily, giving this month’s full moon its Native American name.February: Snow Moon (Hunger Moon, Wolf Moon)

The heaviest snowfalls occur during this month accounting for the Snow Moon name. However, because of the snow, hunting becomes difficult, so to some tribes this was also known as the Hunger moon. About once every 19 years, February has no full moon at all.March: Worm Moon (Sap Moon, Crow Moon, Crust Moon, Lenten Moon)

The name of this month’s moon is somewhat dependent on how far north the tribes lived. In the north, this was the Crow Moon when the cawing of the crows signals the end of winter, or the Full Crust Moon, because the snow cover becomes crusted from the freeze-thaw cycle at this time of year. Further south, the month is known as the Worm Moon because as the ground softens and the earthworm casts reappear, inviting the return of the robins. This month’s moon can also be the Paschal Full Moon, the first full moon after the spring equinox. The first Sunday following the Paschal Full Moon is Easter Sunday. The Paschal Full Moon can also occur in April.April: Pink Moon (Sprouting Grass Moon, Egg Moon, Fish Moon)

Because wild phlox, or grass pink, is one of the earliest widespread flowers of the spring, one of the names of this moon is Pink Moon. Fish Moon was a name given by coastal tribes because this is when the shad come upstream to spawn.May: Flower Moon (Corn Planting Moon, Milk Moon)

May is the month in which corn is planted, flowers are abundant everywhere, and there

is an abundance of milk after the livestock have given birth to their young.June: Strawberry Moon (Rose Moon)

Strawberry-picking season peaks during this month and roses are in bloom.July: Buck Moon (Thunder Moon, Hay Moon)

Buck deer start growing their velvety hair-covered antlers in July giving this month’s moon its name. Frequent thunderstorms at this time of year also resulted in the name Thunder Moon and agricultural practices gave it a third name, Hay Moon.August: Sturgeon Moon (Red Moon, Green Corn Moon, Grain Moon)

This is the time of year when the sturgeon, a large fish of the Great Lakes and other major bodies of water in the northeast, is most readily caught. The name Red Moon is used by a few tribes because when the moon rises it looks reddish through the sultry haze often present in late summer.September: Corn Moon (Barley Moon, Fruit Moon)

This full moon corresponds with the time that the harvest of corn, a staple of the Native American diet, begins. Barley and many fruit such as apples are also ready to be harvested.Harvest Moon

Since the lunar month is only 29 days long, there are 13 full moons each year and the full moon dates shift from year to year. The Harvest Moon is the one that occurs closest to the autumnal or fall equinox. It usually occurs in September, but about once or twice a decade it will fall in early October. At this time of year, the Native American dietary staples of corn, pumpkins, squash, beans and wild rice are ready to be gathered. The light from the full

Harvest Moon allows farmers to work well into the night to bring in their crops.October: Hunter Moon (Travel Moon, Dying Moon)

The leaves are falling from the trees, the fields have been reaped so that hunters can ride over the stubble, and the deer are fattened, so this is the time of year to hunt and lay in stores for the long winter ahead and to use at the thanksgiving banquet after the harvest.November: Beaver Moon (Frosty Moon)

This is the time of year to set beaver traps before the swamps freeze to ensure a supply of warm winter furs. It is also the time when beavers are most active preparing for the winter.December: Cold Moon (Moon Before Yule, Long Night Moon)

December is the month in which the winter cold is usually here to stay and the nights are longest giving rise to two of the names for this month’s full moon.Blue Moon

In seven out of every 19 years, two full moons fall in the same calendar month. The second of the month’s two full moons is popularly referred to as a Blue Moon, which explains why “once in a blue moon” refers to something that happens rarely. The next Blue Moon will happen on July 31, 2015.
