The jury

Stig Gustavsson begun to dive and photograph as a hobby in mid-70’s. He started to take underwater photos in 1991 with his Nikonos 3 -camera. The same year Gustavsson won gold in Finnish Championships in uw-photography. His photos have been published in several magazines and his still picture- and video material has been presented in TV and exhibitions. Gustavsson has been assisting Sukeltaja magazine since 1993. Gustavsson likes to photograph also by using freediving methods due to his wide experience in spearfishing. As a skilled technical diver he has photographed much the wrecks of our seas. He has travelled around several seas of the world to photograph, but still our own Baltic Sea intrigues him the most in spite of its challenges. With his wide-angle photos Gustavsson aims to bring out the magical feeling and beauty of the underwater world and to promote protection of the seas, especially his beloved Baltic Sea. Petri Porkola has photographed on the sea over 30 years. In 2009 he was nominated a candidate for Tieto Finlandia book prize and received a diploma for The Most Beautiful Book of the Year. In spring 2013 Porkola is having two photo exhibitions. Pekka Tuuri has photographed 20 years under water in Finland, Norway and elsewhere in the world. He won the Finnish Nature Photo of the year 2010 and his photo has been chosen as The Underwater Photo of the year 2006 and 2010. Tuuri is working at the moment his book about the underwater world of Finland. Book will be released in April. On jury’s opinion the level of the photos was very variable. In the main categories level was somewhat high, but in some categories the top photos were missing and compromises had to be made. There are only few photographers on the very highest level. The creative category lacked creativity, which the jury wishes to see more.

Category A was quite high in quality and some macros were outstanding. If the participants wish to improve, they should concentrate in lighting. Some of the photos were not actual macros.

CATEGORY A, TOP 3

1. Goblin. Rikard Godlund, SWE. Brilliant composition, good use of the free space, perfect lighting.

2. Toadnursery. Jonna Bergström, SWE. Photographer has captured a rare moment, the spawn of the toads. The strings of eggs crown the picture. Good lighting. The only wish is that the eye of the male could be seen.

3. On the fire. Tobias Dahlin, SWE. Mystical light, wonderful red and blue glow. The young fish is almost in the right place, could be slightly more on the right.

2. Marten Goose with friend. Jonna Borgström, SWE. Innovative, rarely seen photo. Controlled use of flash light. Natural and artificial light work well together. Outstanding depth. Enchanting feeling.

3. Lost. Marco Pennbrant, SWE. Classic wreck photo, but new composition. Tighter cropping could be better. Magical ambiance, this dive is every diver’s dream.

1. Nice dog. Jonna Bergström, SWE. Rare, creative photo. Great movement: bubbles have been captured with a correct exposure. Photo has been taken from close enough.

2. On clouds. Anders Nyberg, SWE. Great reflections. Exceptionally good realization on often seen picture. Shock colours crown the picture.

3. Piano. Johan Löfgren, FIN. The strength of this photo is the sad ambience. As directly from the movie Piano. A bit too wide cropping.

The level of this category was not as good as one could think. People travel a lot in south, where there is much to photograph, good visibility and easy conditions. This should show in the quality of photos as well.
