It seems like time is going by way too fast. It seems like it was just a few days ago we had our meeting. Last month we had John Jordan as a professional demonstrator and as I expected, he was amazing. I learned so much on hollow forms. Did you know he turns all of his hollow forms out of green wood and turns them as a finished thickness? When he’s cutting out his blanks he goes for the most stable part of the tree. This prevents movement after drying. I myself was not aware of this technique, therefore I will be giving it a try. Coming up this month before the General Meeting we have our pyrography and carving class. Those of you taking Neal and Phil’s class please make sure to watch the videos sent in your email as it contains lots of good information to help you in the class. During the June meeting Mr. Tony will be giving a demonstration on ring holders. This is a fun and easy project to learn. Oh, and did I mention the ladies love them. There are still plenty of spots open for this class. For those of you that have Facebook, you probably got to see the Utah Woodturning Symposium. From what I watched it looks like everyone had lots of fun. There were lots of turn off competitions taking place. I would loved to have been there, but unfortunately, work has to come first. I find myself watching Mike Mahoney and Kirk DeHeer bowl turning. Mike is demonstrating the McNaughton cording system. Let me tell you he makes it look so easy but I wonder how many funnels he has created. I have over a dozen and I’m not using the McNaughton system. Up next is the AAW symposium in Oregon. It’s a rarity that this event is held on the west coast, so hopefully more of you can make it. For those of you going I hope you all have a wonderful time. Last but not least, Mr. Craig is looking for shop tours. Just take a few pictures and tell us a little bit about how you got into turning, your favorite things, shop equipment etc. I hope to see you all at Tuesday’s meeting! Hello Nor-Cal woodturners.

I would loved to have been there, but unfortunately,

Share Your Knowledge

One of the great things about Nor-Cal is the wealth of knowledge our members have. Another is that everyone is willing to share that knowledge. If you have a "specialty" or even just a turning project that has "turned out" well, please consider sharing that by demonstrating at one of our club meetings. It can be a ½ hour demo (and we'll combine it with someone else) or a one hour demo. For those who haven't demonstrated before, we have added a page to our website titled "How To for Demonstrators”. It's under the Members Only section at the bottom. Please consider helping the club by sharing your knowledge. Just let Tony or Jimmy know and they will get you on the schedule.

Visit the Nor-Cal Woodturners website to see all the posted Events for the next several months.

Shop Tour Shann Galuza

NCW member since 2015- Club Secretary since 2016.

My 1st shop tool was the Shopsmith. I had that for 15 years and just recently sold it. It was hard to let it go since it fit well in my small shop, one side of a two-car garage.

I purchased an 8” Rikon lathe making pens after taking a class at Woodcraft.

I have upgraded my lathe three more times since then. I bought a 12” Jet from Tony and only had it a month before I upgraded to the Jet 1642 that I thought would be my last lathe. Little did I know that a One Way 2436 was in my future. I you look close, there is a 2” riser kit on the head stock and tail stock to make to the capacity extend to be able to turn a 28” bowl! It also has casters that raise the height another 3”- so you have to be VERT tall to work on this lathe.

I eventually built a platform to stand on. All my tools are on wheels as I have to roll them back into a tight place when not in use, except for my lathe. I have it setup to use all the time. You never know when you might have a free hour after work to turn; and that is plenty of time to make some sawdust I bought the Woodcut Bowl Saver Max3 wood coring system to core out bowls. There is plenty of power with a 3HP 240 Volt One Way. So far I have only cored out green wood. If you want to try out a One Way lathe, now is your chance.

Give me a call to set up a time to come try it out!

I sharpen on a stock Rikon grinder and dust collection with a dust devil.

I have a Laguna 14/12 band saw to round out logs with. My latest upgrade is the table saw, a Powermatic. My hope is that it won’t be a new

bench top, but it looks like I’m off to a bad start

I have been able to turn 2-3 times per week and enjoy learning from our monthly meetings and great members at Nor-Cal Woodturners.
