What is Non-verbal Communication?
• Types of Non-verbal Communication:
• Clothes
• Facial expression
• Body movement and posture
• Gesture
• Eye gaze
• Haptic (touch)
• Proxemics (space)
• Paralinguistic (voice)
• “In greetings, you – perhaps subconsciously – decipher more about the individual and aspects of their culture through body language. Body language consists of all the non-verbal cues we give when we interact with others. It involves anything from eye contact, facial expressions, gestures, patterns of touch, all the way to spatial arrangements between individuals.” (The LaSource)
Social Norms• “A rule or expectation for appropriate social behavior.” (201)
• “Some Canadians perceive greetings such as cheek kissing to be too intimate. Interestingly enough, other cultures, such as the French, consider hugs or embraces to be more intimate than a kiss on the cheek because of physical proximity to the other person. Aireen Luney lives in Vancouver and has traveled to Europe many times on business. She notes that the differences in body language arise from cultural norms.” (The LaSource)
Ethiopian Greeting
4 kisses – 2 on each cheek
Indian Greeting
“We fold our hands and say Namaste which means hello in Hindi.” –Sabhah Sharma
Lebanese Greeting“As tradition, whenever a person wants to say hi to another, they give each other 3 kisses on the cheeks instead of 2 like some European countries. This is mostly for adults between each other or a younger person and an adult. As with a more familiar person, it's only one kiss. For example, for more conservative countries in the middle east such as Saudi Arabia, women do not shake hands with men because it's one of their beliefs that it is forbidden so they only put one hand on the chest. I don't know if it applies only in Lebanon or if you guys don’t have it, but we signal NO by a sharp movement by the head upward and raise the eyebrows.” –Lea Bhannini
Iranian Insult
Equivalent to the middle finger.
Egypt & Germany
“Egypt is the kissing on the cheek. In Germany some are also doing that, like some of my friends and l. There are also people usually girls kissing their friends (girls) on their lips and shaking hands as well…And hugging” -Sara El Gedamy
KoreaOpposite sex must avoid touching
Vietnamese • Educated children are who avoid eye
contact with elder• Avoid eye contact = respect
Italian Differences• In Italy whistling and winking at girls is a
way of complimenting them. And if they are interested they will look back at the person whistling in the eye and if she’s not she will ignore them.
• Italians stand much closer to one another than Americans do. • Ex: its normal for men to walk down the
street arm and arm, as well as for woman.
Using MY Schemas…• 1. Recognize the nonverbal
communication• 2. Using his Schemas and Social
Script to start pull out expectations and assumption: “She should hand it back to me. Is it because my color?”
• 3. Stereotype or prejudice
What is wrong?• Representativeness + Availability =
Schemas• Sense to be right, to confirm belief • behavioral confirmation bias• self-fulfilling prophecy• FAE, even Stereotype
Argentina• Embracing, kissing,
and holding hands.
• One peck on cheek for family, acquaintances, and strangers
• Men included
Philippines• Broad smiles and
kisses

New Zealand (Maori)
Fundamental Attribution Error
• “The tendency for observers to overestimate the causal influence of personality factors on behavior and to underestimate the causal role of situational influences.” (80)
Italy• Non verbal communication it Italy is
considered very important, as gestures are used frequently throughout conversations.
• In Italy gestures can be used to replace words in conversations.
