Improving lives to helpindividuals and families succeed

In my position as Executive Director of Ozaukee Family Services, I usually don’t have the opportunity to work directly with the families we serve, but at one time I did.

When I first started at OFS, I worked with families in our Coordinated Service Team (CST) and Counseling Programs. One of the very first families I saw was a single mom of three children. The kids all had significant mental health issues and were struggling at school, at home and in the community. The mom was independent, strong-willed and reluctant to ask for help, but the school got her permission to invite me in to meet with her. It took me all summer to build “Donna’s” trust, and the first couple of times I came over, we just drank coffee and talked. I listened, got to know her and pointed out her strengths. Eventually, I enrolled the family into CST, referred one of her kids to Counseling and another to the Girls Group. Together with the kids’ schools, psychiatrists, local law enforcement and with mom leading the team we worked toward the family’s goals. After a few months, the kids were more stable; mom felt supported and had learned some strategies to better help her kids when they were struggling. Their behaviors improved. This was 4 years ago.

A couple of weeks ago, my daughter and I were in a local store when I saw this mom. I am always respectful of privacy when I see clients in public, but she came right up to me with a big smile and hugged me. She gave me updates on her children – all doing well. One is on the honor roll at school and another is on the basketball team. When we said good bye and I started to walk away, she said, “Thank you! I Love you!” It made my night, and it reminded me of why I work for Ozaukee Family Services. We do make a difference. We may not always see the affect we have on the lives we touch, but we do make a positive and in this case a lasting impact and so do YOU as supporters of our agency. We couldn’t do it without YOU, the people who volunteer, donate and spread the word about the great things we do at OFS. This year, we have added 7 new Corporate Sponsors who share our passion for improving the lives of children, teens, adults and seniors in Ozaukee County.

2016 PROGRAM STATISTICSOFS PROVIDED SERVICES TO 6,580 INDIVIDUALS IN 2016

Counseling 110 individuals received 842 sessions of affordable counseling for a total of 1,224 hours. In addition to counseling 14 girls have attended a six week “Girls Group” session.

Family Steps 71 kids and 61 parents in 36 families have received assistance from a Family Steps Coordinator.

Internet Safety 3,632 individuals participated in 68 presentations on Internet Safety.

Senior Services 61 Senior citizens received 1,042 instances of help including: 66 chores, 462 rides, 424 phone visits, 40 visits and 50 information & referrals.

Co-Parenting Program The Co-Parenting program provided Beyond Divorce Classes to 147 divorcing parents.

Parenting Programs 266 individuals participated in at least one parenting program including: Play Groups, Spirited Child, Love & Logic or other workshops.

Volunteers 187 people are actively volunteering for OFS.

Coordinated Service Team (CST) 72 kids and 81 parents in 41 families have received assistance from a Family Team Coordinator. In addition to CST, 12 boys have attended a 10 week session called “Guys Group”.

Rainbows 48 children between the ages of 4 and 17 participated in our 12 week Rainbows program. 20 parents participated in the parent support group.

Prevention Programs 42 Prevention Education Programs on Stranger Awareness, Child Abuse Prevention, Eating Disorders and Acquaintance Rape were provided to 1,710 students throughout Ozaukee County.

Parents as Teachers 148 Children & 127 parents in 100 families have received 660 home visits from a Parent Educator.

Community Giving For some OFS program participants, the holidays are a particularly difficult time. Through the kindness of donors, we were able to provide 52 children and 43 adults with gifts of food, clothing, toys or gift cards this holiday season. 48 children in the Rainbow program chose gifts for their parents and care givers. The gratitude we received from these individuals was overwhelming.
