Singing at Carnegie Hall: A Once in a Lifetime Opportunity by Dr. Randall Ball Members of the GBUMC Music Ministry were extended a once in a lifetime opportunity to sing at Carnegie Hall in New York City on April 23, 2018. At the request of Dr. Bryson Mortensen, Assistant Professor of Music and Director of Choral Music at Virginia Wesleyan University, our choir members were invited by MidAmerica Productions, Inc. to perform excerpts from Mozart’s Missa Solemnis in C Major, K. 337 and Vivaldi's Gloria. We were part of an assembled chorus with over 125 voices from across the globe, and this performance featured world-class soloists and the New England Symphonic Orchestra.
This trip for our GBUMC choir members was a wonderful experience of a 5-day residency in New York City (April 20-24, 2018) in partnership with Carnegie Hall and MidAmerica Productions, Inc. Saturday morning and Sunday afternoon during this weekend residency, GBUMC choir members were afforded the opportunity to rehearse the two choral works listed above with world-renowned choral clinicians and conductors David Ferreira from First Lutheran Church in Fargo, ND, and Dr. Bryson Mortensen from VWU.
When we were not in rehearsal, there were many opportunities for us to bond with one another as we: did some sight-seeing in the “Big Apple”, ate at some excellent restaurants, went to some amazing musicals on and off Broadway, attended a beautiful opera at the world-famous Metropolitan Opera, and some of us witnessed a game at Yankee Stadium. Unfortunately, the Yankees won. It was a busy 5 days in the “City that Never Sleeps”, but one of the greatest highlights for many of us on this trip was worshiping together at The Brooklyn Tabernacle on Sunday morning. It was an amazing service filled with incredible worship music provided by soloists and the 200-voiced choir known as The Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir. There was also some awesome preaching by the pastor of the church, Jim Cymbala.
There were a total of 18 participants on this trip from GBUMC, and 13 of them are singers that are regularly involved in our music ministry. It was truly an amazing trip! Please find one of the individuals in the picture and ask them about their experience from our Carnegie Hall visit in New York.

July 2018
Music has always been such an important part of my life. I find joy in singing hymns from years past, as well as contemporary worship music. I still have memories, as a young girl, of a beautiful church in Albuquerque, New Mexico, where we sang “Holy, Holy, Holy! Lord God Almighty.” Songs like
this grab our soul and leave lifelong impressions. My love of music was passed on to my daughters at a very early age, from singing Bible songs in pre-school, to playing bells in church well before they were in third grade. When we moved to Chesapeake in 2005, I remember joining GBUMC and telling Denise that my daughters were actual bell ringers. Denise immediately started a bell choir for youth which they continued to play in until they graduated high school. I am forever grateful of the music opportunities GBUMC has offered our youth.
While my daughters were in school and life was busy, I found pleasure letting my girls do their music...singing, playing bells, violin, and guitar. Occasionally my family would have the opportunity to sing together. Although our family practice was nothing like the Von Trapp family, I cherish the times we had working together. Our preparation may have been stressful (come on, there are four females and Sam,) but it was always worth it!
For the past twelve years we have spent much of our time at GBUMC. Whether through youth activities or music, we found home. We have been poured over with love from church members and discipled through others. Time at church has allowed my family to grow spiritually, both individually and as a family. Now that our girls are on their own, Sam and I have more time to devote to church music and other activities. We have truly been blessed to be a part of GBUMC...our church family.

These are lyrics from an original song titled “Take Me Away”, which I wrote after a time where I struggled to find purpose. God opened my eyes to see the value of a living relationship with Him! These lyrics reflect my heart—vulnerable and broken. God will take our brokenness and make beauty from the ashes! (Isaiah 61:3)! Maybe you can relate? Everyday carries on, just like the one before. Looking back, up until now, I know there must be more to life…
Wondering where I went wrong, I’m missing something... This has gone on too long. I know that my hands are tied. I’m helpless drowning in my pride.
Take me away, take everything away! I’ve held on to this life too long. Lift from my eyes this veil of selfish gain so that I can fi-nally see you now!
When I fall far below, Your mercy finds me. Clinging to You I know there must be some-thing more to life...You’ll show me there is more to this life!
You’ve been calling, now I’ll come...I fall be-fore You. I see my life through Your eyes, ashamed and humbled. Take my life, I give it freely! Take my life…
Fighting all that I am, I’m struggling to stand, feeling that I’m sinking slowly. Giving all of me to You—You make me new! You’ll take it all away…
Stop sinking. Give it away to Jesus.
I’d love to hear from you! Please contact me with thoughts or comments. [email protected]
