Lubar Spirit of Service Award 2017

The first recipient of the Lubar Spirit of Service Award was presented to Dr. Shelly Fritz onWednesday night, September 20th by Dr. Lubar himself. “There is not a more perfect person to receive this award tonight,” Dr. Lubar proclaimed as he asked Dr. Fritz to join him at the front of the room. The audience, including Dr. Fritz’s husband, Ian, and her practice partner, Dr. Anthony Algermissen, agreed fully.

Dr. Lubar spoke of Dr. Fritz’s heart for serving at each of the 5 previous NM MOM events, her bold co-leadership of the 2014 NM MOM event in Rio Rancho, and her ability to unite her colleagues and the community for each of the previous New Mexico Mission of Mercy events.

This award is intended to honor a recipient acknowledging their entire body of work for New Mexico Mission of Mercy and their exemplary character. Nominated by a member of the New Mexico dental community, Dr. Fritz, clearly met that criteria to a tee!

“New Mexico Mission of Mercy is a great event for those with unforeseen circumstances such as mine,” stated Mario Rodriquez, an Albuquerque resident and both patient and volunteer at NM MOM 2017. Mario arrived unannounced at the Albuquerque Convention Center on Thursday, the 21st, to ask if he might be able to help with setup of the dental clinic. He was put to work setting up dental operatories and supervising those who were doing the same. He marveled at the fact that he was able to volunteer for the second time after having done so in Rio Rancho in 2014 as well.

That night Mario chose to wait in line as a patient outside the Convention Center so that he could receive dental treatment the next day. Over the next two days he received a cleaning, restorations and extractions that “have made a huge difference in my life.”

Mario immigrated with his family 60 years ago to the Midwest, worked in agricultural fields as a child with his family and then worked in the oil fields after graduating from high school to save enough money to attend college. He graduated from Oklahoma State University and worked in computer science areas at the University of Arizona, Ross Scientific and Hewlett Packard before retiring early to care for his ailing mother in Oklahoma.

Mario is the perfect example of the spirit of NM Mission of Mercy…..an incredibly giving man and volunteer who provided assistance at the event and then waited for his turn to be served as well, expressing immense gratitude at that opportuning to receive dental care.

NM MOM 2017 was a great success!Thank you to the Co-Chairs of this event, Drs. Michael sparks, Michael Brown, and Greg LoPour for your hours of careful planning.
