Born in 1956, Valerie Emick was one of seven children raised by working class parents on the outskirts of Detroit Michigan. Her father, a veteran of the Korean Conflict and officer for the Detroit Police Department, pursued a West Coast opportunity and moved her family to Southern California in 1963. Bonelli Park while attending Mt. San Antonio College. There, Valerie began to cultivate what would become a lifelong passion in educational affairs, and in 1983 moved to the High Desert to serve as secretary to the Hesperia Unified School District (HUSD) Director of Special Education Services. After her time in the district office, Valerie supported the multi-disciplinary education of local special needs students as an Instructional Assistant at Hesperia Junior High School. Jerri Potras Nominee Membership Secretary (Los Angeles)

I worked in the Los Angeles Community College District in a variety of positions for almost 40 years. During that time I earned a Master of Science Degree in Public Administration which helped me work with regulatory agencies. I found I could make a difference. I also realized that I do like politics. As retirement approached, I attended various Republican fundraisers. I enjoyed the events and met wonderful like-minded people. Upon my retire-ment in 2007 I joined the East San Gabriel Valley RWF. A month or so later I was asked to be the editor of the club’s newsletter. I edited the newsletter from 2008-2015, prepared

legislation reports, developed a website, prepared press releases, took photographs, and set-up community outreach booths. I am currently a member of the Arcadia RWF and founder of ‘Your Republican Neighbors,’ a coalition of local Republican groups setting up outreach booths in our community. My association with the Federated reinforces my belief that citizens must work to ensure the best candidates are elected to office and that we citizens must fulfill that important role of watch dog. In that spirit, I’ve worked on national, state, and local Republican campaigns and have served as an al-ternate to the 48th Republican Central Committee. I write letters to the editor and most get published. I regularly attend my city council meetings and will speak up on issues of concern. My current effort is working with my neighbors to pre-vent a fire station from being placed on our small local neighborhood park. I never set out to be a community organizer or activist. I now realize I have become one. I’m a team player and look forward to supporting the Federation in a new en-deavor.
