To Whom It May Concern:

I would like this letter to be received as an enthusiastic nomination for Ms. Julie Kreuz who is a colleague of mine. I base my reference upon her performance as a teacher, coach, and Director of Admissions at St. Peter-Marian in Worcester. I have known Ms. Kreuz for eight years in my role as a supervisor and I deem her to be a talented educator who is dedicated to the mission of the school.

As a graduate of the school, Ms. Kreuz is passionate about the educational mission that we embrace. We assert that our role is to produce leaders by concentrating on academic excellence, faith formation and community service. We do not just want our students to be knowledgeable, we want them to lead meaningful lives that make the world a better place. Julie is the embodiment of those ideals.

Julie is a valuable asset to our school community because of she made her mark as an outstanding English teacher. She taught for us right out of college and was selfless in doing whatever was asked of her to strengthen the department. This year, she returned to the classroom part-time to contribute there once again after a seven year hiatus.

At both the high school and junior high school levels, she works tirelessly to create a rigorous environment that holds students to the highest possible standards. She devises age appropriate assignments, forms plans for students who face learning challenges, and succeeds in teaching all elements of our curriculum. She understands that academic excellence is about integrity and challenges students to create original work that is authentic and relevant to their lives. Julie is a tireless worker who devotes hours to perfect her craft.

What is in incredible about this dedication is that Julie works for hours everyday outside of the classroom. Seven years ago she stepped out of the classroom to take on additional duties to promote our school as the Director of Admissions. She reinvigorated our approach to welcoming students, expanded our social media presence, engaged parents, established outreach to alumni, and volunteered on the Athletic Hall of Fame selection committee. I am most impressed by the personalizing approach she takes to meeting new students and helping them to feel welcome by all. She does not forget students once they join our school. Instead she knows exactly the right steps to take to connect teachers, counselors, students and parents to ensure that we meet the needs of all of students.

Ms. Kreuz is also a woman of impeccable character. This is most evident in her role as a coach where her skill set shines. She draws upon her own talent and experience because she was a student-athlete at SPM and went on to an NCAA career. She shares this knowledge as coach of our Varsity Field Hockey Team for 17 seasons. It is incredible how many hours she spends in the classroom, her office and on the field. This only occurs when a person is dedicated to the process of learning and has the mindset that life IS education. As Field Hockey Coach she has been incredibly successful with over 120 wins. Our program has competed at the highest levels of state tournaments and she has been outstanding in challenging students, while being respectful of their personalities and guiding them with empathy and care. More importantly, she

Page 8: NOMINATOR/SCHOOL ADMINISTRATOR · both the 2013 National High School Associations Field Hockey coach of the year and the 2014 Top of the circle united State field hockey coach of

emphasizes scholarship, character, discipline, and service. Her student-athletes are exemplary because they follow her lead and they buy into her program.

In addition to the competencies she brings to the classroom, the office, and athletic field, I respect Julie more deeply because of her gift to appreciate the social emotional well being of her students. Many of our students seek her out for guidance and support because of her willingness to listen to them and play an active role as friend, advocate and at times as surrogate parent. She understands that schools are built for children, not adults.

I nominate Julie Kreuz as a powerful woman worthy of recognition from your organization. I believe that she is deserving of this award because of her attention to detail and her recognition of the inherent dignity of every student.

Answer Below Being new to the district, and up against the clock to nominate, I can't doher accomplishments justice.I know she coached girls basketball for 3 or 4 seasons, she is currently theadministrative assistant to the Superintendent, she has served as aCO-AD, and has done the Score-book for Home Basketball Games for over20 years, but what she is best known for, is her 30 plus years as theSchools Field Hockey Coach. "Coachy" as she has become affectionatelyreferred to, is a North Brookfield staple. A 1985 graduate of NorthBrookfield High School, she returned to her Alma Mater in 1990 and tookover the Field Hockey program, and continues to do so today. Upon takingthis job and speaking to various AD's, coaches, and officials, one thing isalways asked of me when I tell them that I am from North Brookfield. "IsShiela LeBlanc still coaching Field Hockey?"

Answer Below This past July I was hired at Frontier Regional School in Deerfield to teachphysical education and perform duties as the school's athletic director. Iam lucky enough to work alongside Melissa "Missy" Mahar each day in thegym. In addition I am lucky to have her as one of my head field hockeycoach.

In the short time knowing Missy, I simply can't say enough positive thingsabout her. From when we first met she was welcoming in many ways. Even though I was the "new guy" on her turf, she was willing to collaboratewith me on things to change in PE class. This says a lot about her as shewas not stuck in her ways of doing things, but rather was energized at thechance to change things up and try something new.

Once the school year started I was even more amazed. The respect thestudents have for her is like nothing I have ever seen. Students come toher to talk about their day, congratulate her on a field hockey win, talkabout issues going on in their lives or ask how her own children are doing. When watching her talk to current and former students it could best bedescribed as family-like, respectful, and caring. I don't know how she doesit all!

In addition to being an amazing teacher, Missy is an outstanding coach. Winning is a part of it as I have listed some of her accomplishments below, but it's much bigger than that. From my athletic director position she is aperfect coach. She handles everything herself, I never get angry parentphone calls, or student-athletes at my door with complaints. The only thingI hear from people is that she is an amazing and passionate woman that isa shining example for the young ladies that she works with each day.

I have no doubt that anyone that has met, been taught by, or played forMissy would have even more positive things to say about her. She is trulyan amazing woman!

After graduating as a three sport athlete from Frontier she came back toteach and coach. Below is a list of just a few of her coachingaccomplishments.15 Western Mass Finals Appearances8 Western Mass Titles1 State Finalist

Answer Below Dear Committee Members:

When I saw your call for nominations for the MIAA's Women in AthleticsDistinguished Service Award, I immediately thought of Coach TheresaNyhan from the Mansfield Public Schools. It is my honor to nominate herfor this prestigious award because she is an unsung hero whosecontributions have significantly impacted female (and male)student-athletes. To be able to provide the Evaluation Committee with awell-rounded picture of Theresa, I submit my reference (which isco-authored by MHS Athletic Director Joseph Russo) as well astestimonials from Theresa's principal, Assistant Superintendent, one of herField Hockey Assistant Coaches, and a friend/colleague who is also herField Hockey Scorekeeper. I hope that all of these perspectives allow youcome to understand why we believe Coach Theresa Nyhan is truly worthyto be designated for an MIAA Woman of Distinguished Service Award.

Theresa graduated from Mansfield High School in 1983 and went on toearn a B.S. in Biology from Boston College and an M.A. in TeachingBiology from Bridgewater State College. She played Field Hockey atBoston College, and went on to become a successful Assistant Coach forField Hockey at the collegiate level at Penn State, Brown University andWheaton College. In 1992 Theresa returned to her hometown and toMansfield High School to teach Biology as well as become heavily involvedin the Athletic Department.

As her Superintendent, I know Theresa as our Field Hockey Coach -- onewho has been Varsity Head Coach since 2004; however, Mr. Russo hasworked with Theresa far longer than I and has been able to observe her inthe variety of sports she has coached:

Basketball, Girls junior Varsity: 1995-1998Basketball, Girls Freshman: 1992-1995; 1999-2011Field Hockey, Freshman: 1990-1991; 2000-2002Field Hockey, Varsity 2004-presentSoccer, Junior Varsity: 1993Softball, Girls Varsity: 1994-1999; 2001Tennis head Coach: 1990-1991; 2007 (Head Coach), 2013Unified Track Coach: 2018-present

I find it interesting that you describe a successful award candidate as notbeing "exclusively about wins and losses" because Theresa is described bymany as being modest about her Field Hockey record. Although her FieldHockey teams have qualified for state tournaments every year she hascoached for MHS, those affiliated with the program say she probably can'ttell you the team's wins or losses off the top of her head at any given timeduring the season. Make no mistake, Theresa is a strong competitor; buther student-athletes achieve because she is the consummate teacher.

Coaching an athletic team is the most public of teaching. Theresa provides

Page 17: NOMINATOR/SCHOOL ADMINISTRATOR · both the 2013 National High School Associations Field Hockey coach of the year and the 2014 Top of the circle united State field hockey coach of

quality instruction to her athletes as well as to the adults associated withthe team. For example, her current assistant coaches played for her whenthey attended MHS and, although they are adept assistant coaches, theynow benefit from her guidance and modeling as the Head Varsity Coach.Theresa and her assistants are not simply teaching the skills of theparticular sport; Theresa is educating the "whole young woman" andproviding the direction for them to do things correctly so that their skill set isone that will help them succeed in life. Theresa divides her assistants andthe field into individual teaching stations so that skills can be taught andpracticed in smaller groups; in this way the practice session is differentiatedso that each athlete receives more individualized attention. In addition tothe work with her Varsity Field Hockey team, Theresa runs a Field Hockeycamp during the summer as a feeder program to the MHS programs. Bysupporting our middle school students, she bolsters the high school teamsin a very positive manner.

Three years ago, MHS brought forward Unified Track as a spring sport.Theresa was instrumental in getting the program off the ground. It was notonly her athletic skills, but also Theresa's demonstrated belief inteaching/coaching "all students" that led Mr. Russo to recruit her to run theUnified Track program. Once again, Theresa rose to the challenge and shehas successfully navigated the first two years of Mansfield's foray intoUnified Sports.

Theresa is a strong advocate for women's athletics. It's never abouther--rather, it's about the team. She has served on Field HockeyCommittees to advance the sport. She fosters a service mentality in herathletes; for example, the Field Hockey teams have a long history ofdonating their time every Veteran's Day to rake leaves in the yards ofelderly residents of our community. Theresa wants to improve in all areas. For example, when our district transitioned to Google for scholasticapplications, the Field Hockey scorekeeper suggested to Theresa that shebegin using a Chrome Book with the Google Sheets App for accuracy andefficiency. It has proven successful.

Theresa is a strong advocate for high school students. Her principal, MaryWatkins, has written one of the letters that I've uploaded to this application.Ms. Watkins speaks to Theresa's skills as a highly respected Biologyteacher. Outside of the classroom, Theresa served over a decade as theMHS Student Council Adviser as well as being a member of the school'sResponse to Intervention team and providing support to students in otherclub advisories.

I wholeheartedly nominate Coach Theresa Nyhan for an MIAADistinguished Women in Athletics Service Award. I believe she epitomizesthe characteristics you seek in conveying this honor. She is a tremendousasset to the field of education where she influences student-athletes and isa valued Ambassador for Women's Sports. Please don't hesitate to contactme for verbal confirmation of the above. I thank you for your consideration

Answer Below Coach Pellerin has been mentoring young women for a very long time inSeekonk. She has coached the field hockey team for over 30 years at aschool where she also played. She has also taken on the role of headcoach for softball for the past few years. In her home town of Seekonk, shehas developed generations of female athletes who respect themselves, each other, and the game. Every young lady that I have spoken to aboutcoach Pellerin have all had only positive things to say. As a tribute to her30th anniversary as a coach in Seekonk, more than 100 former playersreturned to honor her and play a series of alumni games.

In 2017, she was named a PCA Double-Goal Coach award. She was oneof only eight New England coaches selected and was among the top 150 inthe nation. To earn that award, she had to be nominated by a player, parent, or fellow coach; be supported by multiple testimonials; andrecognized for a strong devotion to helping develop better athletes andbetter people. "Her athletes consistently describe Coach Pellerin as urgingthem to strive to be the best they can be, requiring them to practice untilthey master any skill, praising their improvement, and encouraging them tomove on from their mistakes to the next play. Promoting communityservice, sportsmanship, teamwork, and positivity, Coach Pellerin is a modelfor how to combine competitive performance with character development(https://www.positivecoach.org/the-pca-blog/top-quality-coaches/)."

I think it is time that Coach Pellerin is honored in her home state, by aleague that she played in as well as coached.
