Name of Nominee: HARSH GUPTA

Academic Background: (maximum of 10 lines) B. Sc (Hons); M. Sc.; Ph.D. in Geophysics. Advance courses in seismology at the International Institute of Seismology and Earthquake Engineering, Tokyo (1966-1967, 1971-1972). Over 170 papers in peer-reviewed journals including Nature and Science; edited 20 volumes; authored four leading books, all published by Elsevier; edited “Encyclopedia of Solid Earth Geophysics” (http://refworks.springer.com/geophysics/). Fellow, Indian National Science Academy; TWAS; American Geophysical Union. Several awards including W. Smith Medal of the American Geophysical Union; Padma Shri Government of India; USSR Academy of Sciences “100 Years of International Geophysics” Memorial Medal; Bruun Memorial Lecture of the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission.

Artificial water reservoir triggered earthquakes have occurred at several sites, with earthquakes exceeding magnitude 6 at Hsingfengkiang (China), Kariba (Zambia- Zimbabwe border), Kremasta (Greece) and Koyna (India). He studied these earthquake sequences globally. After the deadly Mw 9.3 Sumatra earthquake of 26th December 2004 and the resultant tsunami, that claimed over 250,000 human lives, Dr Gupta proposed a Tsunami and Storm Surge Warning Center for India. The Government of India accepted Dr. Gupta’s proposal and under his guidance a most modern Tsunami Warning Center has been set up in India. This end to end approach was implemented with in a short stipulated time of 30 months, and the Center has been functioning satisfactorily since August 2007 (www.incois.gov.in).
