In MemoriumIrene Veloz

Good Night IreneBy: Loretta Ogden

I am so sorry that so many of you never knewIrene Veloz because she was a wonderful person. We sat many nights talking and laughing. We plannedtrips to Moab, trips to shows and field trips. Irenewas a severe diabetic but she did not let that stopher. She and her husband Oscar (who we called ChefOscar ) went on a trip to Mexico with the Warthens.Oscar did the kitchen (Big Rock Café) at the showfor several years he served tri-tip sandwiches and itwas a popular lunch spot in La Habra for oneweekend a year in March. The Veloz family was veryclose and their son Oscar and daughter Renee andher fiancé Mike would always celebrate at ourChristmas party with us.

Irene collected turtles or tortoises and no matterwhere we went there would be one waiting for her.She had a good eye for the rocks when we were onfieldtrips.

She had a long career at Beckman Industries andwas truly a dedicated and loyal employee. My salonwas very close to Beckman in Brea so Irene wouldpop over to chat now and then.

It has been a long time but Don and I thoughtabout Irene ,Oscar and there families often and areso sorry we will never have the pleasure of her visitsagain.

4 NOC News - July 2010

Hidden Treasures, there certainly are many in ourNOC Gem and Mineral Society. I felt compelled towrite this missive because I was truly overwhelmedat the effort put forth by our club members and theirfriends and relatives and people on the street we ropedin to help put this show on.

Every day I became more aware of some otheraspect of planning and execution of this event. Wheredo I start, the advertising, attending other communityevents to promote the show, the articles in the localpapers, the entrée into social media advertising, the50 signs that were made to help people locate the show, the lay-outs of the contents of the three buildings, thespeakers, the children’s activities (and I had friendswho came with their children WHO TOTALLYLOVED IT), the offerings at the silent action and thefun atmosphere around the silent action area. Thedemonstrators were diligent and skillful and PATIENT.The speaker roaster was impressive, in addition wehad authors and representatives from differentorganizations and a great show offer and freemagazines from Rock and Gem magazine.

Our club fed the dealers and ourselves Thursdaynight and the banquet on Saturday night was completelycharming with the fiesta theme, once again ourmembers were food servers (somehow I did notexpect that) and everyone there with the club pitchedin for the fastest tear down I have ever seen. (Howarddid wash the 100 salsa bowls and I hope we use theminto perpetuity).

The bracelets were an engaging party favormemento and the centerpieces were so attractivepeople asked if they could take them to use again forthe editor’s breakfast. Club members received muchdeserved awards and I can’t wait to see them in thedisplay case at the community center! Our eventchairman, really the team of Don and Ophelia Warthenwere like the little engine that could and there weresome steep grades to ascend.

As many of us are aware of we had serious electricalproblems in the gym but Frank and his crew workedand worked and by Sat. noon “we had light”. Againon Friday we had problems with adequate food beingavailable for purchase but on Saturday and Sundayproblems resolved. One reason I am so passionateabout why this matters is the educational emphasis ofthis convocation. The fossil exhibits and petrifiedwood exhibits were incredible, I saw a child’s facetransfuse with wonder after she was handed a freshlysliced geode and was told, “no one has ever seen theinside of this rock before, and you are the first.” Of

course, there was a little crystal garden tucked insideand it was a perfect moment. Our dealers were oftenvery knowledgeable and so willing to talk withattendees, eager to share their background andenthusiasm. The dealers, well selected by our dealerchair, had wonderful products and there was a nicevariety of items so one could find huge photos of anagate slab looking otherworldly, tools, books, sunstonesand moonstones, fossils, rocks and minerals fromaround the world to start or enhance a collection (evena few from out of this world.) Most of our dealersdonated lovely or useful raffle items, diamonds andintricately crafted pendants, a rock hound hammer andfossils!

The gorgeous plants were popular as always andmy daughter was so excited about the plant haul shemade she said she will volunteer for the club shownext year. She bought a salt rock lamp and an agateslab night light and plans to try her hand at makingnight lights herself.

There were greeters/security at every door and ifthe next person didn’t show up people would stay untileverything was secure. We were told there was anattempted break in but the person was scared off byour volunteer sleepover security. And finally ourannouncer Kathy keeps everyone informed with helpfrom Bob and Randi.

The raffle team worked very well together and wecommented at least 100 times that the raffle prizesthat were donated were generous and some of themstunning as well. See the picture of our grand prizewinner for the amethyst necklace, Jeanne Asp almosthad tears in her eyes. Our special prize winner forthe Sunday attendees only, Alfred Alvarado was anattendee because of advertising at the senior centerjewelry class in Whittier. The prizes donated and/orpurchased by the NOC club generated muchexcitement, dare I say “lust” by the raffle ticketpurchasing public and it became a hang out spot aspeople checked back to see if they had been a prizewinner. We had the opportunity to hear feedback onregular basis, and the majority was positive, some of itgushingly so! Of course there were some “helpful”comments and we will certainly digest those at theJuly meeting but the overriding message here isattendees had a great time, learned a lot, the childrenhad fun and began to cultivate an interest in earthsciences, we will have some new people attend ourmeetings, our national affiliates were proud of us andknew how hard everyone worked and how much wecared about it being a well planned and successfulshow and we all survived to tell our “war stories”. Iam proud to be part of this club in this community!
