How Hard is this rock I working with?By Don Warthen

When you get involved in the Rock Hounding Hobby you hear a lot about the hardness of a stone and what is chartcalled “The Mohs Scale of Hardness”?The “Mohs Scale” was developed in 1822 by Frederich Mohs. Mr. Mohs wanted to determine which minerals wereharder than others. He did this by scratching one mineral with another, the stone, or mineral that scratched the otherwould be the hardest, he then assigned a number to each according to their hardness, 1 being the softest or Talc and 10being the hardest or Diamond. Please note that some minerals have a range of hardness depending on a lot of factorssuch as orientation of the mineral structure (c-axis v a-axis) & impurities in the matrix, it should also be noted that whileall Diamonds are considered a 10 that Natural Diamonds (octahedral) are harder than man made Diamonds (synthetic orCube Faces). The question still remains. when I am working with my rocks how do I know which are the harder rocks, or anythingelse? I have prepared a list of some common items that illustrates their relative hardness.

Hardness (Mohs) Item Name1 Talc1 - 2 Graphite1 ½ Tin2 Gypsum2 ½ Gold & Silver2 ½ - 3 Copper4 Fluorite4 - 7 Glass5 – 5 ½ Obsidian5 – 6 Turquoise, Hematite & Lapis5 ½ - 6 1/5 Opal6 - 6 ½ Sunstone (Feldspar Group)6 ½ - 7 Jasper, Agate & Tanzanite (Zoisite)6 ½ - 7 ½ Garnet Group7 Peridot7 Quartz (Amethyst, Citrine, Tiger’s Eye, etc.)7 ½ Zircon7 ½ - 8 Beryl (Emerald, Aquamarine, Goshonite, etc.)7 ½ - 8 Spinel8 Topaz8 - 8 1/5 Cubic Zirconia9 Corundum (Ruby & Sapphires)10 Diamond

Dear CFMS Societies,Please read this article by Mark Nelson/SafetyChairmen regarding Internet thieves attackingsocieties. This article will be in the Feb CFMSNewsletter, but the EC felt it was important enoughto send it to you NOW, so you are aware of it as weenter the new year.

Happy New Year!Lapidary Societies Attacked By Internet

Thievesby Mark Nelson, Safety Committee Chair

In the past two months it has been reported to methat lapidary societies across the country are beingtargeted by thieves. The thieves seek those societieswho have a web presence, look at the web site toidentify the president and treasurer and initiate falseemails seeking to steal society funds. Here is howthey do this:

The thieves study the society’s web site to identifythe society president and treasurer and their emailaccounts. Then they craft an email which masks thesenders email, but lists the Sender (the societypresident) by name. The email is directed to the societytreasurer, mentions the treasurer by name, and directsthe treasurer to send money to an individual orbusiness in a hurry.

One theft attempt went like this:From: (President’s name)To: (Treasurer’s email)Subject: Need check for vendorMessage: (Treasurer’s name), “Please send a checkin the amount of $420 to this Vendor today.....” -giving a name and address of a supposed vendor. In this case, the treasurer did not recognize thevendor’s name. She called the president andquestioned why the president would request a checkwhich had not been approved by the board and whichrequired two signatures to process. The president hadno idea that the scheme had been hatched, and theplot was foiled.

In another instance the thieves sent an email to thetreasurer of a lapidary society in just the same way.The email requested that a check in the amount of$980 be sent to a business at an address in anotherstate. The email had the name of the president in theSender’s box and the email of the treasurer in the

“To” box. The treasurer responded, asking what theamount was for. The reply, supposedly from thepresident, was that it was for graphic design servicesthat he authorized and insisted that the check shouldbe sent immediately and by express mail. A fakeinvoice was included in the reply email. The treasurerrushed the check to the post office. Later that sameday the treasurer realized that the email that showedin the reply to the “president” was different than shehad seen before in previous email exchanges with thesociety president. She called the president and, uponlearning that the request was a scam, was able tostop payment on the check and reported it to herlocal police department.

This shows that a group or groups of thieves aretargeting lapidary clubs - probably other groups, aswell. It is not difficult for thieves to put a name in theemail Sender box that is designed to gain ourconfidence. We’ve seen this with emails from banks, internet providers and even the IRS. Now we knowthat they are targeting lapidary societies. We shouldforward this example to our treasurers, presidentsand boards of directors - and everyone who is orwho might sign on our bank accounts now or in thefuture - and make sure that the proper financialsafeguards are in place:

$ Be sure that a treasurer knows who is makingthe request for payment. In most email providers suchas AOL, if you click on the name of the personsending the email an email address will appear.

$ Immediately question any payment to a personor business who is unfamiliar to the treasurer.

$ Make sure that all requests for payments areaccompanied by an invoice that can be verified.

$ Verify that the expense requested by the email iscovered by the budget and is from a known vendor(expected) or has previous specific board approval.

$ Have all checks signed by two of the top electedexecutives who should also ask these questions.

$ When in doubt, pick up the phone and talk tothe person requesting the check.

If you have an example to report, please email thedetails to me so that the CFMS can be aware of it.You need not list your society, but give us thefederation you belong to - if other than the CaliforniaFederation.
